The dental casts made from Aboriginal children during the course of a longitudinal growth study in Central Australia provided material for analyzing tooth wear under known environmental conditions. The wear facets produced on the occlusal surfaces were clearly preserved on the dental stone casts and recorded the progress of enamel attrition from ages 6 to 18. These casts were photographed and traced by electronic planimetric methods that automatically recorded the location and size of wear facets on the first and second permanent molars. These areas of worn tooth surface were compared to the total tooth surface. The worn surface was regressed on age to calculate wear rates of each tooth. Discriminant analyses were also performed to determine the significance of dental attrition differences between the sexes at each age group. The total wear on each tooth was highly correlated with age as expected but females wore their teeth at a significantly higher rate than males. The mandibular molars wore more rapidly than maxillary teeth in both sexes. The discriminant analysis successfully grouped 91% of the cases according to age and sex. Pattern of wear, the location, and size of wear facets also differed between age groups and sex. The questions of why there is a difference between male and female wear or why there is greater wear on one arch or arch region have no ready answers. The differing rates and pattern of dental wear do suggest that arch shape and growth rates may be the answer though it has yet to be tested. However, the occlusal surface wear is useful for age estimation in a population and provides a record of shifting masticatory forces during growth.  相似文献

Abstract

Many types of wear facets can be found in mammalian teeth. Some are related to the initial surface, others use the cross-section of the enamel as the main tool. In primary occlusal surfaces facets mark the gradual wear, that are related to a relatively late ontogeny. Facets in teeth with secondary occlusal surfaces, however, represent specific arrangements of crests of enamel and dentine. Such facets require some initial wear to become fully functional. The tooth morphology guarantees such facets to be effective for a long period of time. Therefore they can be discriminated as specialized facets. From the different types of facets three specialized ones were selected, blade facets, rasp-facets, and nipper-facets, because they ate widely distributed, function differently, and are comparable with mechanical tools. They are long lasting and differ in the amount of exposed dentine. The amount of dentine is used to differentiate phases during late ontogeny, the part of the life history, when teeth are exposed to wear. Consequently the various types of facets can be related to different ontogenetic phases. The relevant phases are prolonged at the cost of other ontogenetic phases. Therefore, the various specialized wear facets represent heterochronies within the ontogeny of teeth.  相似文献

Occlusal changes were important factors in temporomandibular disorder (TMD). It is of interest to evaluate the association of occlusal wear facets in TMD patients. We used a dataset of 49 patients with and without TMD for this study. Occlusal wear facets were evaluated using Smith and Knight tooth wear index. Data shows that teeth wear was present more in patients with TMD (55%). The age group 26-40 years showed high prevalence of teeth wear (grade1) in TMD patients (P value = 0.034). TMD was present more in females than males. Female (54%) patients with TMD showed more teeth wear compared to males. Most patients with TMD showed posterior teeth wear (61%) than generalized teeth wear. Thus, association was present between occlusal teeth wear and TMD patients especially in the age group of 26-40 years. Hence, proper evaluation of occlusal factors will aid in early diagnosis of TMDs.  相似文献

In many mammalian species, the progressive wearing down of the teeth that occurs over an individual's lifetime has the potential to change dental function, jaw movements, or even feeding habits. The orientation of phase-I wear facets on molars reveals the direction of jaw movement during the power stroke of mastication. We investigated if and how molar wear facets change with increasing wear and/or age by examining a mixed longitudinal dataset of mandibular tooth molds from wild Propithecus edwardsi (N = 32 individuals, 86 samples). Measurements of the verticality of wear facets were obtained from three-dimensional digital models generated from μCT scans. Results show that verticality decreases over the lifetime of P. edwardsi, a change that implies an increasingly lateral translation of the jaw as the teeth move into occlusion. A more transverse phase-I power stroke supports the hypothesis that these animals chew to maximize longevity and functionality of their teeth, minimizing the "waste" of enamel, while maintaining sharp shearing crests. Results of this study indicate that wear facet verticality is more closely correlated with age than overall amount of tooth wear, measured as area of exposed dentin, suggesting that age-related changes in cranial morphology may be more responsible for adjustments in jaw motion over the lifetimes of Propithecus than wear-related changes inthe shape of occluding teeth. Finally, the rate of decrease in wear facet verticality with age is greater in males than in females suggesting differences in development and/or access to resources between the sexes in this species.  相似文献

The isolated adult teeth of titanosaurian sauropods from the Upper Cretaceous Bissekty Formation at Dzharakuduk, Uzbekistan, differ little in overall structure but show considerable variation in enamel sculpturing and wear patterns. The crown shape of unworn juvenile teeth ranges from lanceolate to conical. Most specimens have enamel texture resembling crumpled paper or completely smooth enamel. Longitudinal grooves along the mesial and distal edges are present on only a few tooth crowns and might be developed on both the labial and lingual sides. Among 252 worn tooth crowns there are eight variants of wear patterns, all possible combinations of 0–2 apical and 0–2 lateral wear facets. The most common is wear pattern A1L0 (one apical facet, no lateral facets; 62.7%). The next most common variant has two apical and no lateral facets (A2L0, 12.3%). These apical wear facets include the primary wear facets, which are produced by an opposing functional tooth, and secondary wear facets, which are produced by a replacing upper tooth coming into contact with the functional lower tooth at a late wear stage. The relative abundance of tooth crowns with two apical wear facets possibly suggests incipient development of a tooth battery in the Bissekty titanosaur.  相似文献

Abstract

Dental wear facets on the occlusal surface of premolars and molars are traces of their main function, the mastication and therefore reflect masticatory movements and also paramasticatory (i.e. non-dietary use of teeth) behavior. Here we present the Modular Wear Facet Nomenclature applicable to most mammalian dentitions. Topographic positions of wear facets in relation to the major cusps and crests of the teeth are used to designate the areas of the occlusal surface the facets occupy (e.g. their mesial, distal, lingual, or buccal position). Previous published systems for labeling wear facets have been inconsistent with each other. Therefore, we provide a synoptic review of the most widely-used terminologies, and introduce the alternative Modular Wear Facet Nomenclature. This nomenclature aims to overcome the difficulties caused by the existing inconsistent wear facet terminologies. Our new approach is applicable to dentitions where the occlusal morphology does not change significantly for most of the lifetime of the animal. In those dentitions, the primary occlusal surfaces are not significantly modified as wear facets become more extensive with wearing. This appears to be a common pattern in pre-tribosphenic, tribosphenic molars, and the teeth derived from tribosphenic precursors (e.g. bunodont molar morphologies). In teeth where the secondary occlusal surface is functionally intensely modified (i.e. high-crowned and evergrowing teeth with large areas of dentine exposed) any facet labeling system appears to be challenging, since the identification of individual facets is blurred and their spatial position may be indeterminable.  相似文献

To study the direction of jaw movements in the koala from wear facets on the molar teeth by scanning electron microscopy, gold coated epoxy resin replicas from the right maxillary and mandibular tooth quadrants were examined from 12 koala skulls. The progressive development and location of facets, the orientation of striae on them and directional data were recorded and transferred from electron micrographs to superimposable transparencies.
Polished facets with laterally oriented striations developed on the cristids and cristae progressively into dentine, where Greaves' effect indicated that the direction of the chewing stroke was labiolingual. Polished and pitted facets, aligned and striated in the parasagittal plane, occurred on the smooth interactive enamel surfaces of maxillary and mandibular cusps.
Labiolingual transit of the crislids over the cristae, with a slight anteromedial shift, was inferred to be the predominant chewing stroke on the working side with no contralateral balancing contact. A propalinal isognathous movement in which successive cusps made contact was also deduced.
Previous concepts of koala chewing and tooth wear were confirmed and amplified, and these may have application to studies of extinct marsupial jaw mechanisms.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the wear affecting the almost complete dentition of a Sao individual fossil from Cameroon prehistory (XIVth century). Occlusal surfaces of the fossil fragile pieces were plaster replicated with an original technique adapted from usual dental impression methods (silicon elastomer polymerising by addition). Axial macro-photographs of both sectional dental casts and original pieces made it possible to produce drawings of the occlusal areas on transparencies in order to superimpose the lateral hemiarch counterparts in their optimal intercuspal position. The study of interarch contacts was completed by confronting and observing the occluding position of hemiarch replicas. The occlusal analysis revealed that the wear extent was equivalent on left and right molars. Hall's occlusal wear index and Van Reenen and Reinach's classification of proximal wear allow assessment of the degree of wear extent on premolar and molar sections in relation to the side or the arch observed. The even bilateral proximal and occlusal wears observed on the different kinds of homologous teeth appeared as the main contributor to this well-balanced interarch occlusion. The mandibular incisor losses and the particular type of wear affecting lower canines led to the conclusion of the presence of a labret, a great number of which was found in the area. According to Miles' method of age assessment based on tooth wear, the pieces studied belonged to an individual between 30 and 40 years old.  相似文献

The geometrical surfaces of soil-burrowing animals were imitated and modeled on a cone component, the measuring tip part of a soil cone penetrometer. These biomimetic surfaces are concave dimples, convex domes and two wavy forms. The conventional cone surface and the biomimetic cone surfaces were analyzed in ANSYS 11.0 program to estimate cone equivalent stress and soil equivalent stress. Results show that biomimetic surfaces with the geometrical structures have lower cone equivalent stresses and soil equivalent stresses than that with conventional (smooth) surface. The least maximum cone equivalent stress and least maximum soil equivalent stress were recorded for biomimetic surfaces with concave dimples and wavy form-2 respectively. The two-body abrasive wear of biomimetic cone surfaces and conventional (smooth) cone surface were run on a rotary disk type of abrasive wear testing machine. The biomimetic cone surfaces were found to have lower abrasive wear than the conventional surface. It was found that and biomimetic cone surface with concave dimples has the lowest abrasive wear among the all tested surfaces.  相似文献

The wear on the occlusal surfaces of male babirusa cheek teeth was evaluated in 53 skulls of Babyrousa babyrussa from Buru and the Sula Islands and 87 skulls of B. celebensis from Sulawesi, Indonesia. Based on the comparative lengths of their continually growing maxillary canine teeth, the skulls were divided into five ‘age categories’ (A–E). Numerical and symbolic codes representing tooth wear were applied to each pillar (cusp region) of the mandibular and maxillary permanent third and fourth premolar teeth, and the first, second and third permanent molar teeth. There was no significant difference between the tooth wear patters of skulls in groups A and B, or in groups C and D, and so these were amalgamated. There was close correspondence in wear patterns between each side of the mouth in both species and in each age group. The wear patterns of the mandibular and maxillary teeth, although not identical, were very similar, as were the wear patterns of both species. In group A + B for both species tooth wear was relatively slight, with the M1 teeth experiencing most relative wear. There was almost no wear of the M3 teeth. In group C + D substantial wear of upper and lower M1 was evident. In group E more widespread wear of the cheek teeth was seen, with increased severity of M1 tooth wear, yet there was comparatively much less M2 and M3 tooth wear. The pattern of cheek tooth wear of the Babyrousa spp. was different from that shown by Sus scrofa. Differences in diet selection and processing were highlighted as potential contributing factors. The pattern of cheek tooth wear in male babirusa was not adequate for use to monitor their age.  相似文献

Microscopic observations were made of wear on the proximal surfaces of tooth crowns of Australian Aboriginals and whites. Typical wear facets displayed well-defined borders within which vertical or near vertical furrows, ranging from about 0.1 to 0.5 mm in width, were noted. Furrows on the interproximal surface of one tooth seemed to "interdigitate" with those on the proximal surface of the adjacent tooth. These observations are not consistent with the commonly-held view that interproximal tooth wear results from a buccolingual movement of adjacent teeth that maintain contact through mesial migration. Vertical or near vertical movement of teeth, possibly including a tipping action, must be an important factor, although the precise nature of the movement requires further investigation.  相似文献

This study examines dental fluctuating asymmetry (FA) in two samples of fetal rhesus monkeys, one composed of 19 fetuses from diabetic mothers (FDM) and the other of 20 fetuses from nondiabetic mothers. Seventeen measurements were taken on the deciduous dentition of right and left mandibles. The degree of FA was assessed by comparing FDM to fetuses of normal mothers by correlation between right and left sides, and analysis of variation differences between right and left sides. Significant FA was found for three traits based on the correlation between right and left sides and for seven traits by the between-treatment ratio of variance between sides. Distal teeth, both within and outside of a morphologic field, exhibit significantly greater FA than mesial teeth. Our results support the hypothesis that developmental instability is detectable by dental FA.  相似文献

Bone remodelling has been associated with microdamage. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of microdamage in the alveolar bone and its potential role in the initiation of bone remodelling following the application of an orthodontic load. The three-dimensional morphology of the alveolar bone was investigated by means of high resolution micro-CT scanning. In 25, 3-month-old, male Danish land-race pigs, the alveolar bone around the lower right and left first molars was analysed. The right first molar was moved buccally with a force of 130 cN by means of a custom-made cantilever made of a TMA 0.017 x 0.025 inch wire. The left molar was left untreated. After 1, 2, 4, 7 and 15 days of treatment the regions containing the right and left molars were excised and en bloc stained in basic fuchsin and the presence of microdamage detected. Diffuse damage was present in the alveolar bone of both the treated and the untreated teeth on both sides. On the lingual sides, diffuse damage showed the same orientation as the periodontal fibres. Bone microcracks were also detected on both the treated and untreated teeth. On the buccal surfaces they where often observed in close proximity to scalloped resorption surfaces. After 1 day of treatment, the presence of microcracks on the buccal-treated side was particularly marked. To conclude, bone microdamage is present in porcine alveolar bone in form of both microcracks and diffuse damage, suggesting that microdamage-driven remodelling also occurs in the alveolar bone. The presence of bone microcracks in the direction of the orthodontic force at day 1 suggests that they could represent the first damage induced by the orthodontic load that has to be repaired.  相似文献

Two specimens of the peculiar squalid shark,Trigonognathus kabeyai gen. et sp. nov., were collected from the coastal waters of Wakayama and Tokushima, Japan, by bottom trawl at depths of 330 and 360 meters. Shape of teeth similar in both jaws; slender, unicuspid, canine-like, without any cusplets or serrations, with weak thin fold on both lingual and labial sides in anterior teeth on both jaws; tooth at symphysis of each jaw longest. Interspace between teeth very wide. Both jaws triangular in shape. Most of dermal denticles on body and head roughly rhombic, swollen very much near central part, with about 10–40 facets on the dorsal surface of its crown. Preoral snout length very short. The paper presents the skull of a male gray wolf shot in the region of Snina, eastern Slovakia. Age at death of the wolf was estimated at 6 years. The skull was characterized by the almost-complete absence of the alveolar processes of the incisive bones and multiple dental abnormalities that were attributed to a severe trauma. All maxillary incisors and both maxillary first premolars were missing. In addition, both maxillary canines were fractured with only tooth fragments being left. The pulp exposure associated with the crown fractures of the maxillary canines had caused pulp necrosis and periapical lesions, as evidenced on radiographs. The right P2, P3, and P4 were fractured, with only the remaining tooth structure of the second and third premolars being left. In the right P4 and the left M1, periapical bone resorption was diagnosed radiologically. In the mandibular dentition, the right I2 and left P1 had been lost in life. The mandibular canines exhibited distinct wear facets that were caused by contact with the maxillary third incisors, which were subsequently lost. The fact that all fractured teeth showed signs of wear indicates that the trauma had occurred some time before the wolf was shot.  相似文献

Macerated cervical vertebrae of 139 adult and 39 juvenile dogs were assessed for morphological evidence of axial rotation, which is denoted by the shape and orientation of the articular facets. The potential effect of the presence of caudal costal foveae at C7 on facet geometry was also investigated. Four variations of caudal facet shape were evident, namely, plane, concave, convex and sigmoid. The earliest onset of change in shape from plane to curved was noticed in juvenile dogs who were older than 8 weeks. The incidence of curved facets denoting axial rotation ability was observed to increase on descending down the cervical spine. Concave caudal facets were more frequently present in males and in large dogs (P < 0.001), compared to Dachshunds and small breeds. The degree of concavity was not related to age but was associated with the transverse distance between the most medial aspects of the caudal and corresponding cranial facets (P < 0.05). In large breeds, the presence of concave caudal facets at C7 was inversely related to the presence of caudal costal foveae (P < 0.01). The effect of axial rotation is discussed in context with clinical literature suggesting that axial rotation might attribute to the development of the wobbler syndrome.  相似文献

Atypical wear and oral lesions were studied in the dental remains from the Middle Neolithic Pitted Ware Culture site Ajvide on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Teeth (n = 764) from 17 males and 11 females were examined microscopically to document unusual wear, assess wear patterns and oral lesions as evidence of habitual behavior, and determine their effect on the oral health of this population. Five atypical wear types were observed: occlusal facets, occlusal excessive load, labial vertical striae, labial horizontal striae, and interproximal striae. Three oral lesions were recorded: chipping, periapical lesions, and dental tilting. Results indicate that teeth were used in a habitual manner at Ajvide, based on the morphology and regularity of the patterns of atypical wear. Differences were observed between the sexes, indicating gender-related differences in the habitual use of teeth. Some wear categories showed a significant correlation with age, signifying increased or accumulated wear with age. Statistically significant positive correlations were found in the molars between occlusal excessive load wear and periapical lesions as well as tilting. Other apparent links were also observed between chipping and vertical striae as well as excessive load, although these were not significant. This suggests a relationship between dental wear and dental pathologies at this site, suggesting that habitual use of teeth indirectly affected the general oral health at the site. Wear patterns, furthermore, seem to mirror both frequent activities as well as single events.  相似文献

A large sample of more than 100 teeth of the titanosaurian sauropod Lirainosaurus astibiae from the Late Cretaceous Laño quarry (Northern Spain) has been studied. Most of the teeth are small (crown height less than 13 mm), cylindrical, with parallel edges and smooth enamel; a few larger teeth are tapered and have more ornamented enamel. These differences are regarded here as ontogenetic changes, the small teeth being interpreted as those of juveniles and the large ones as those of subadult or adult individuals. The juvenile teeth also present some differences in the apex of the crown: some of them have a tapered tip, and others have apical and/or mesial/distal facets. The first are probably unerupted or non-functional teeth, while the ones with wear facets are functional teeth. This is the first time a change in the microwear structures of the apical wear facets between juvenile and adult teeth is observed in a titanosaurian taxon. Moreover, this let us to hypothesize a switch in the diet and food processing between the juvenile and adult individuals of Lirainosaurus. Finally, the teeth of Lirainosaurus are different from those of the Late Cretaceous European titanosaurs described to date and also differ from the teeth of basal titanosauriforms from the Early Cretaceous of the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

The angle at which enamel prisms approach the wear surface holds information with regard to the stiffness of the tissue, as well as its wear resistance. Hence, analyses of prism orientation may shed light on questions of whether the thick enamel in hominins has evolved to confer stiffness or wear resistance to the teeth and may thus inform about the diet and behavioural ecology of these species. This was explored for Paranthropus robustus and Australopithecus africanus, whereby a distinction was made between prisms at the Phase I and Phase II facets. The results were compared with those obtained for Theropithecus, Macaca, and Potamochoerus for whom behavioural and/or experimental data are available, and were interpreted against simple mechanical principles. The South African hominins differ significantly in their relationships between wear facets and prism angulations. Teeth of P. robustus are better adapted to more vertical loads during mastication (Phase I), whereas those of A. africanus are better adapted to cope with more laterally-directed loads (Phase II) commonly associated with roll-crush and mastication. Overall, teeth of P. robustus appear stiffer, while those of A. africanus seem more wear resistant.  相似文献
