Logistic model for soldier production in aphids   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary The number of aphid soldiers in a colony is positively correlated with colony size. This positive correlation has been repeatedly confirmed for the bamboo aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola. To explain this, we present a simple model assuming logistic growth of the aphid colony. The model predicts that a first soldier is more readily produced in large colonies than in small colonies. This is because the productivity of each reproductive decreases as the colony size increases, and also because the efficiency of defense increases as the number of reproductives defended by the soldier increases. The latter effect disappears when the number of reproductives exceeds Np, the critical number of reproductives that a predator could damage. This argument holds for a second, a third, and an ith soldier in general. Although we assume logistic growth of the aphid colony, the model is applicable to any form of colony growth with minor changes of some premises.Received 12 February 2003; revised 28 March 2003; accepted 22 April 2003.  相似文献

Summary: The reproductive characteristics of the soldier-producing aphid Pseudoregma bambucicola were studied in Kagoshima, Southern Japan, to know the factors affecting soldier production of eusocial aphids. The soldier proportion in aphid colonies was highest from October to November. In some large colonies, soldiers were observed in all seasons except in July when colony size was relatively small. Multiple regression analysis showed that the colony size was a principal factor affecting soldier proportion throughout a year. Other social or environmental factors such as aphid composition, host plant conditions and predator abundance were not always significant. Rearing experiments revealed that large colonies (̿,000 individuals) produced soldiers in almost all seasons while small colonies (<1,000) never produced any soldiers. The caste-production schedule of adult females was examined in the field. When solitary females produced both castes, they usually produced normal nymphs first and then soldiers. Females from large colonies tended to produce more soldiers in the earlier period of their lifetime, whereas females from newly established small colonies produced no or only a few soldiers at later times. The average number of soldiers and normal nymphs produced consecutively by a single female was >10 and >20, respectively. Because they have a small number of ovarioles (<15 on average), females should alter caste production within the same ovarioles according to changes in environmental conditions. Artificial removal or introduction of predators and reduction of colony size did not affect soldier production over two successive generations, revealing maternal effects on soldier production. Females cannot shift caste production quickly in response to changes in predator abundance and colony size. This is probably due to early developmental determination of castes within the mother's body.  相似文献

The proportion of sterile soldiers in an aphid colony is positively correlated with colony size. Assuming logistic growth of the aphid colony, Aoki and Kurosu (Insect Soc 50:256–261, 2003) presented an inequality that determines, for any colony size, whether a soldier or a reproductive will be added to the colony. To put it in words, if the marginal defensive efficacy of a soldier, multiplied by the number of reproductives, is larger than the mean productivity of reproductives without defense by that soldier, the soldier will be produced; if not, a reproductive will be produced. Based on Aoki and Kurosus inequality, we carried out simulations to determine whether the proportion of soldiers increased with colony size. Given a constant level of depredation per aphid and a constant number of predators, proportion of soldiers continued to increase with colony size unless a single soldier was very effective or unless carrying capacity was very large. Given a constant number of nongluttonous predators and a decreasing level of depredation per aphid, proportion of soldiers soon began to decrease after a peak. However, given an increasing number of nongluttonous predators to keep a constant level of depredation per aphid, proportion of soldiers again continued to increase. These results confirmed the argument that the proportion of soldiers can increase with colony size under a wide range of realistic assumptions.  相似文献

Herbivore dynamics and community structure are influenced both by plant quality and the actions of natural enemies. A factorial experiment manipulating both higher and lower trophic levels was designed to explore the determinants of colony growth of the aphid Aphis jacobaeae, a specialist herbivore on ragwort Senecio jacobaea. Potential plant quality was manipulated by regular addition of NPK-fertiliser and predator pressure was reduced by interception traps; the experiment was carried out at two sites. The size and persistence of aphid colonies were measured. Fertiliser addition affected plant growth in only one site, but never had a measurable effect on aphid colony growth. In both habitats the action of insect predators dominated, imposing strong and negative effects on aphid colony performance. Ants were left unmanipulated in both sites and their performance on the aphid colonies did not significantly differ between sites or between treatments. Our results suggest that, at least for aphid herbivores on S. jacobaea, the action of generalist insect predators appears to be the dominant factor affecting colony performance and can under certain conditions even improve plant productivity.  相似文献

The significance of kin discrimination for the evolution of sociality is theoretically important. The behavioural response ofPseudoregma bambucicola soldiers to aphids from other colonies was studied to examine the possibility of context-specific kin discrimination. When non-kin aphids were artificially introduced into experimental colonies, they were never killed or removed by soldiers. Field experiments revealed that the soldiers frequently attacked distantly related species such asAstegopteryx bambucifoliae andCeratoglyphina styracicola, but rarely conspecific aphids or congeneric species such asP. koshunensis andP. alexanderi. Another experiment showed that the soldiers showed altruistic defence even when coexisting with non-kin reproductives. These results agree with and extend the results from previous studies of kin discrimination in social aphids. The absence of kin discrimination suggests that some other factors besides higher genetic relatedness may play a prominent role in the evolutionary maintenance of soldier behaviour in aphids.  相似文献

Eusocial aphids produce sterile individuals (soldiers) that specialize in colony protection. Killing predators is often considered the main function of soldiers. In this study, we tested the effect of harassment by soldiers of a eusocial aphid, Ceratovacuna japonica (Homoptera, Hormaphidinae), on predation by this species’ natural enemy, the larvae of Atkinsonia ignipicta (Lepidoptera, Stathmopodidae). We experimentally introduced some aphids and a predator to petri dishes and compared the survivorship of first-instar reproductives in the presence and absence of soldiers. We showed that soldiers can reduce the rate of predation on their colony mates without killing the predators. When predators encountered soldiers, they did not attempt to prey on them. Instead, they evaded them and often started to make a nest by spinning silken threads. The soldiers, in contrast, waved their forelegs and attacked the predator, and they sometimes succeeded in grasping the predator’s body. Because the predator used its mandibles to remove any soldier that succeeded in grasping its body, the soldier did not kill the predator. The reduction of predation was apparently caused by the delay of predation resulting from the harassment behavior of the soldiers. In eusocial aphids, a defensive strategy that delays predation may buy the soldiers’ colony mates time to reproduce or to escape from the predator.  相似文献

Summary Colonies of the aphidPseudoregma alexanderi produce morphologically-specialized first-instar larvae, termed soldiers, that defend the colony from predators. The environmental cues and physiological mechanisms governing soldier production are currently unknown. Here we present a morphometric study of soldiers and normal first-instar larvae ofP. alexanderi. Several morphological features (fore-leg length and width, hind-leg length, and horn length) plotted against body length display relationship that are similar to a sigmoidal curve. We found further support for an earlier finding that soldiers fall into two size categories, majors and minors, although both types of soldiers appear to follow the same allometry. The patterns of allometry in the soldier-producing aphids are very different from those found in other social insects and do not easily fit into the traditional categorization of allometries. We present two simple alternative models of soldier development as a framework for guiding future studies of the mechanisms of soldier production.  相似文献

The aphid Pseudoregma sundanica (Van der Goot) (Homoptera: Aphididae) has two defence strategies. It is obligatorily tended by various species of ant and also produces sterile soldiers. We investigated how they allocate their investment in these two strategies. We measured the size, number of soldiers, number and species of tending ant, and number and species of predators in P. sundanica populations. We found that the level of ant tending correlated negatively with soldier investment in P. sundanica. The species of tending ant also influenced soldier investment. We excluded ants from aphid populations and recorded changes in population size and structure over four weeks. Ant exclusion led to population decline and extinction. At the same time, surviving populations showed a significant increase in soldier investment. The data demonstrate that social aphids can adjust their investment in soldiers in direct response to environmental change.  相似文献

The control of caste formation in the harvester termiteHodotermes mossambicus (Hagen) was investigated.Normal laboratory colonies contained a primary reproductive pair, between 6.59 and 24.98% workers, 0.39 and 3.45% soldiers and 74.64 and 92.06% larvae. Supplementary reproductives did not develop in colonies deprived of their king and queen. Continuous removal of soldiers stimulated soldier production. We have suggested that a pheromone produced by the soldiers plays a major role in controlling the soldier population of a colony. A similar phermone system appreared to control the production of workers.Evidence was also obtained that the primary reproductive pair influenced the production of workers and soldiers.  相似文献

The ontogeny of the soldier caste in Prorhinotermes simplex is studied with emphasis on the instar origin of soldiers, the duration of the presoldier stage, and changes in external anatomy during the soldier morphogenesis. The soldiers of different instar origin are compared morphometrically and by analysis of the soldier defensive secretion. The soldiers were found to develop from larvae of the second up to the eighth instar, via a short (13–17 days) presoldier stage. The early soldier instars were found exclusively in incipient colonies while the mature colony contains late instar soldiers only. The abrupt change in the external anatomy occurs in two steps. During the larva-presoldier moult, the head increases in length but only slightly in width. During the presoldier-soldier moult, both the length and width of the head increase markedly and the typical cordate shape is attained; the relative size of the pronotum increases considerably. The long falcate mandibles develop mainly during the larva-presoldier moult. One antennal segment is added during these two moults. With increasing instar age of soldiers a relative increase of the pronotum and the head size in its posterior region was observed. No functional differences in external anatomy were found among the six soldier instars. The composition of the frontal gland secretion is similar in the six soldier instars, an extraordinarily high amount of a defensive substance, (E)-1-nitropentadecene, was detected together with (Z,E)-α-farnesene, presumably an alarm substance. The strategy of soldier production is discussed. We conclude that the observed patterns of soldier production in P. simplex correspond well to its ecological strategy of an advanced single-site nester able to migrate and form foraging groups. We investigated ecological and behavioral aspects of the interactions between two social aphids, Pseudoregma bambucicola and Astegopteryx bambucifoliae (Hormaphidinae, Cerataphidini), both of which produce second-instar, sterile soldiers in galls formed on Styrax suberifolius, in Taiwan. By censusing their galls, either species was found to invade galls of the other species. Twenty-eight (58%) out of 48 A. bambucifoliae galls contained P. bambucicola, while four (6%) of 69 P. bambucicola galls contained A. bambucifoliae. Furthermore, P. bambucicola behaved like social parasites in galls of A. bambucifoliae. Colonies of P. bambucicola produced much fewer or even no soldiers compared with those in natal galls. Our experiments also revealed that individual aphids of P. bambucicola more successfully intruded into galls of A. bambucifoliae than into conspecific galls, and that guarding soldiers of P. bambucicola effectively prevented aphids from invading their galls and permitted only conspecific soldiers to join their colonies. These differences in behavior provide good explanations for the differences in the frequency of invaded galls found between the two species. Summary Life history and behavioural characteristics of the bamboo aphid,Pseudoregma bambucicola (Takahashi), which has sterile soldiers, were studied in the laboratory. The stadium of normal (fertile) first instar larvae was two times longer than that of second instar larvae, and the stadium of soldier-type (sterile) first instar larvae was much longer (max. 116 days) than the stadium of normal first instar, suggesting that soldiers are able to take nutrition from bamboo. Stimulation of larvae with breath, vibration of bamboo shoots or disturbing the larvae with the tip of a fine brush induced significantly more defensive acts by soldiers than those by normal larvae — the latter usually fled. Soldiers did not attack non-kin conspecific intruders or even aphids of different species, suggesting that, in this species, kin-recognition ability is low.  相似文献

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is found in red and green color morphs. Previous work has suggested that the aphidiine parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday preferentially attacks green pea aphids in the field. It is not clear whether these results reflect a real preference, or some unknown clonal difference, such as in immunity, between the aphids used in the previous studies. We used three susceptibility-matched pairs of red and green morph pea aphid clones to test for preferences. In a no-choice situation, the parasitoids attacked equal proportions of each color morph. When provided with a choice, A. ervi was significantly more likely to oviposit into colonies formed from green morphs when the neighboring colony was formed from red morph aphids. In contrast, red morphs were less likely to be attacked when their neighboring colony was of the green morph. By preferentially attacking green colonies, A. ervi may reduce the likelihood of intraguild predation, as it is suggested that visually foraging predators preferentially attack red aphid colonies. Furthermore, if this host choice behavior is replicated in the field, we speculate that color morphs of the pea aphid may interact indirectly through their shared natural enemies, leading to intraspecific apparent competition.  相似文献

Eusocial aphids produce sterile individuals (“soldiers”) that specialize behaviorally and morphologically to protect their colony from predators, while production of soldiers can negatively affect colony growth because of reproductive allocation and opportunity cost. Hence, a cost-saving soldier production strategy is expected to be favored. Here, we hypothesize that, to save the cost, a eusocial aphid Ceratovacuna japonica produces soldiers with smaller weapon in the season when predators are not abundant. The abundance of two specialist lepidopteran predators (i.e., Taraka hamada and Atkinsonia ignipicta) of C. japonica dramatically increased, and aphid colony size significantly decreased, from July to August. In line with these, the soldiers in August had larger weapons (i.e., frontal horns) than those in June, indicating a correlational increase in weapon size with predation pressure. We predict that a reliable prospective signal indicating the coming of midsummer (environmental temperature) induces mother aphids to produce soldiers with larger weapons. Experiments clarified that soldiers produced at 20 °C (typical temperature of July to August) had larger weapons than those produced at 15 °C (typical temperature of May to July). Such phenotypic plasticity appears to be adaptive to maximize the fitness of C. japonica under a temporally variable but predictable predation environment. These results indicate that C. japonica aphids not merely have distinctive reproductive—and soldier castes, but also produce differentially armed soldiers in a habitat with temporally changing predation risks.  相似文献

The genus Pemphigus comprises several species that produce soldiers (defensive morphs) in galls on the primary host. At the moment, it is unclear if host-alternating species also produce defenders on their secondary host. We therefore examined how P. bursarius morphs of the secondary host generations respond to predators to test whether they show defensive behavior. We further examined how this response compares with the antipredator behavior of soldiers in P. bursarius and P. spyrothecae occurring on the primary host. We performed two manipulative experiments using two predatory species to quantify the behavior of the different morphs in response to predators. In both experiments, secondary host morphs of P. bursarius showed no attacking behavior and antipredator behavior in these morphs was limited to escaping natural enemies by walking away. In contrast, the first instars of the primary host generations in both Pemphigus species showed attacking behavior and were capable of killing the predators.  相似文献

Sexual specialization and skewed sex ratios of the altruistic castes, especially soldiers, are common in many termite taxa. However, no theoretical or empirical studies have explained the origin of the sexual division of labor in termites. In most termite species, female alates are larger than male alates, and mature queens are much larger than kings, with females under consistent selection for high fertility. Therefore, females usually have the potential to be larger than males. Here, I present a novel preadaptation hypothesis that potential sexual differences in the suitability for the caste give rise to the sexual division of labor, and I provide the first evidence in support of this hypothesis in termites. Defense in Reticulitermes is typically performed by soldiers via mandibular and phragmotic defense in which soldiers with pluglike heads block openings, thus preventing enemies from invading the nest. Phragmotic defense requires that soldiers have heads wide enough to plug nest openings. Therefore, a size threshold for workers that develop into soldiers is a likely adaptation for effective defense. I show that sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and a size threshold for soldiers promote skewed sex ratios. A female-biased soldier sex ratio was observed in species with SSD, whereas there was no bias in soldier sex ratio in species without SSD. Thus, SSD and soldier sex ratio data from several Reticulitermes species support the preadaptation hypothesis.  相似文献

Summary. To clarify the allometric development of body parts accompanying soldier differentiation in termites, we measured 16 body parts of soldiers, presoldiers, pseudergates (workers), nymphs and larvae of the damp-wood termite Hodotermopsis japonica. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed using these parameters, which revealed that differentiation into soldiers differed distinctly from development into adult (reproductive) individuals. In particular, the anterior body parts enlarged during development of soldiers. Similarly, elongation of the apical portion of both mandibles was noted during soldier differentiation. X-ray analysis of mandibles revealed sclerotization of the soldier mandibles after differentiation into terminal soldiers. These morphological changes during soldier differentiation are associated with changes in their roles within the colony. Through soldier differentiation, the morphology of this caste of termite becomes functionally suited for attacking predators, and unsuitable for feeding on wood using their mandibles. Based on these data, we suggest that there must be some morphogenetic factors leading caste specific morphology such as soldier mandibles.  相似文献

In termites the evolution of reproductive altruism is not based on a particularly high relatedness between nestmates. For the evolution and maintenance of the ancestral sterile soldier caste, the benefits generated by the soldiers' presence must compensate the loss of the soldiers' reproductive potential. To study the impact of soldiers on colony's fitness, we manipulated the proportion of soldiers to nonsoldiers in colonies of the dry-wood termite Cryptotermes secundus.'Soldier-less' colonies were obtained by removing soldiers and inhibiting their development with an extract of soldier heads. The colonies were set up for 1 year in experimental nests in the field. 'Soldier-less' colonies produced fewer soldiers. The reduction of soldiers neither affected colony survival nor helper growth, but fewer dispersing sexuals were produced in 'soldier-less' than in control colonies. This confirms what was only supposed so far, that in termites soldiers are maintained for their intrinsic benefit to cost ratio.  相似文献

To understand the developmental process of aphid soldier differentiation, we investigated the morphological characters of normal nymphs, soldier nymphs and developing embryos of Pseudoregma bambucicola. Results of morphometric analyses showed that normal and soldier nymphs formed discrete clusters on the basis of several morphological characters, although a small number of intermediate individuals, termed ‘intercaste nymphs’, were present. In late embryonic stages, normal and soldier embryos were morphologically distinguishable. The earlier the embryonic stage, the smaller the morphological differences between them. In early embryos less than 1000 µm in length, normal and soldier embryos were not morphologically distinguishable, suggesting that the onset of soldier differentiation occurs at an early embryonic stage. Throughout embryonic development, morphological differentiation of the soldier caste proceeded gradually. Notably, several morphological characters of soldiers grew remarkably upon larviposition. Observation of embryonic leg cuticle revealed a characteristic folding structure, indicating that some morphological traits of the soldier are exaggerated upon larviposition through expansion of the folded cuticle. We suggest that morphological differentiation of the soldier caste in P. bambucicola comprises two phases: gradual growth during embryogenesis and rapid growth upon larviposition.  相似文献
