The release of apical dominance by the physical destruction in situ of the apical meristem and associated leaf primordia (decapitation) promoted the growth of tillers in non-herbicide-treated wild oat plants, as indicated by increased tiller lengths and fresh weights. At 96 h after [14C] herbicide treatment following decapitation, the absorption of [14C]imazamethabenz and total translocation of radioactivity were respectively increased by 28% and 49%. By 96 h after [14C]imazamethabenz application, the radioactivity detected in the roots of decapitated plants was 45% higher than that in the roots of nondecapitated plants while the radioactivity in tillers of decapitated plants was 2.6-fold that in tillers of intact plants. Decapitation together with foliar spraying of imazamethabenz at 200 g ha–1 further reduced tiller fresh weight, greatly decreased the total tiller number, and thereafter significantly increased overall phytotoxicity by 32% as measured by total shoot fresh weight. The results of this study support the hypothesis that main shoot apical dominance limits translocation of applied imazamethabenz to lateral shoots, rendering tillers less susceptible to growth inhibition by the herbicide.  相似文献

The influences of nutrient supply and plant growth regulators on the phytotoxicity of imazamethabenz in wild oat (Avena fatua L.) were evaluated in the greenhouse. Wild oat plants supplied with half-strength rather than one-eighth-strength Hoagland solution were more susceptible to imazamethabenz, showing greater growth reduction in main shoot and tillers. The improved herbicide efficacy at higher nutrient levels appeared related to increased herbicide interception by the greater leaf surface available. Leaves developing at either nutrient level did not differ significantly in epicuticular wax, so differential absorption appeared unlikely. Wild oat plants supplemented with nutrient, switching from low to high levels at the time of herbicide application, were as susceptible to imazamethabenz or even more so than plants growing with a constant high level of nutrition. The wild oat pure-line Montana 73, a strongly tillering line, was more susceptible to imazamethabenz than the limited-tillering line, Crop Science 40. Both 2,4-D and GA3 reduced imazamethabenz-induced tillering. Imazamethabenz efficacy was increased by GA3 but not by 2,4-D. These results support the hypothesis that lowering apical dominance of wild oat increases imazamethabenz activity in tillers, and that increased tillering following sublethal doses of imazamethabenz treatment is associated with the release of apical dominance.  相似文献

Controlled environmental experiments were carried out to determine the phytotoxicity of several graminicides on wild oat (Avena futua L.) as influenced by combination of drought and temperature stress or drought and low relative humidity. Compared with unstressed conditions (20/15°C plus adequate soil moisture), imazamethabenz phytotoxicity to wild oat was reduced significantly when plants were exposed to a combination of drought and high temperature (30/20°C) stress. Imazamethabenz phytotoxicity was reduced almost as much by high temperature stress alone as by a combined temperature and drought stress. When herbicides were applied to wild oat plants subjected to drought alone or to drought plus high temperature, the observed reduction in phytotoxicity from greatest to least was: fenoxaprop = diclofop > flamprop > imazamethabenz. Fenoxaprop performance was most inhibited by the combination of drought plus high temperature, although drought alone and to a lesser degree, high temperature alone, inhibited fenoxaprop action. High temperature had an adverse effect on the efficacy of fenoxaprop at lower application rates. Raising fenoxaprop application rates to 400 g ha−1 overcame the inhibition caused by high temperature alone but only partially alleviated the effect of drought combined with high temperature. When plants were grown under a low temperature regimen the imposition of drought stress had little effect on imazamethabenz phytotoxicity but did reduce fenoxaprop phytotoxicity. At 25/15°C drought reduced the phytotoxicity of fenoxaprop and diclofop greatly but had no significant impact on the performance of any of the herbicides examined, regardless of soil moisture regimen. Experiments were conducted in greenhouse, growth chamber, and laboratory conditions to determine the effect of ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4] on the phytotoxicity, foliar uptake, and translocation of imazamethabenz on wild oat. Rates of (NH4)2SO4 up to 5% (w/v) applied with a greenhouse sprayer did not affect the phytotoxicity of the herbicide when the mix was applied at the one- to two-leaf stage. However, inclusion of 1 and 2% (NH4)2SO4 increased the phytotoxicity of the herbicide when the mix was sprayed at the two- to three-leaf, or the three- to four-leaf stage. At 10%, (NH4)2SO4 decreased the phytotoxicity of the sublethal dosage of the herbicide. When the herbicide was applied as individual drops to the growth chamber-grown plants, inclusion of (NH4)2SO4 at 1% did not affect phytotoxicity as measured by shoot growth. The presence of (NH4)2SO4 did not affect the amount of imazamethabenz retained by wild oat foliage, but it decreased [14C]imazamethabenz absorption, slightly antagonized acropetal translocation, and increased the basipetal translocation of [14C]imazamethabenz. It was concluded that application methods greatly modify the effect of (NH4)2SO4 on imazamethabenz phytotoxicity. Herbicide absorption and translocation as determined by one method do not necessarily represent the absorption and translocation patterns when different application methods are used. Absorption and translocation were not the factors that were responsible for the observed effect of (NH4)2SO4 on the herbicide phytotoxicity.Abbreviations SC suspension concentrate  相似文献

Foliar application of imazamethabenz at sublethal doses of 100 and 200 g a.i./ha to wild oat plants at the two-leaf stage without tillers greatly inhibited the growth of the main shoot but increased tillering. The near cessation of sheath and the main stem elongation indicated that the major effect of imazamethabenz on the main shoot was inhibition of intercalary growth. Low doses of imazameth-abenz treatment resulted in more leaves (including leaf primordia) in the main stem but did not affect mature first and second leaves. Sublethal doses of imazamethabenz only briefly inhibited tiller growth. A later increase in tillering in treated plants resulted from the stimulated resumed growth of tillers and the increased initiation of tiller buds. Such enhanced tillering mainly resulted from the release of apical dominance due to the inhibition or cessation of the main stem growth with imazamethabenz treatment. Both doses of imazamethabenz (100 and 200 g a.i./ha) significantly reduced the biomass of shoots and roots, but increased the ratio of roots/ shoots dry weight.  相似文献

Greenhouse and growth chamber experiments were conducted to determine the effect of soil moisture and temperature on the phytotoxicity in wild oat of imazamethabenz or fenoxaprop tank-mixed with certain additives or MCPA. The surfactants Agral 90 at 0.5% and Enhance at 0.5% increased imazamethabenz phytotoxicity under both moist and drought conditions. These surfactants had no significant effect on fenoxaprop phytotoxicity regardless of the soil moisture regimes. Fenoxaprop activity was increased by ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4] at 1% but only under well watered conditions. Wild oat control with imazamethabenz was also slightly enhanced in a well watered regime by the addition of sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4) at 0.13%. At high temperature (30/20°C) and low temperature (10/5°C), the phytotoxicity of imazamethabenz was increased when tank-mixed with Agral 90 at 0.25% or NaHSO4 at 0.13% compared with that when imazamethabenz was applied alone, if soil moisture was adequate. There was no such increase under conditions of drought and high temperature. (NH4)2SO4 at 1% did not significantly affect imazamethabenz performance irrespective of temperature/soil moisture conditions. The phytotoxicity to wild oat of imazamethabenz or fenoxaprop was not changed by tank-mixing with MCPA isooctyl ester at 300 g a.i./ha, regardless of soil moisture levels. The reduced fenoxaprop phytotoxicity in wild oat due to moisture stress was not readily alleviated by the inclusion of selected additives or MCPA in the tank mixture. Maize (Zea mays L. var. Bonnie) transformed with a gene encoding a 5-enolpyruvylshikimate 3-phosphate synthase with altered sensitivity showed over 100-fold greater resistance to the herbicide glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl]glycine) in comparison with its non-transformed progenitor (parental control) at the third-leaf stage. Studies with [14C]-glyphosate at a dosage lethal to the parental control, but sublethal to the transgenic, revealed that a maximum of 45-65% of the applied dose was absorbed, with greater absorption occurring in transgenic plants. Translocation of glyphosate was closely related to its absorption (r value 0.956) with approximately 15% more of the applied dose being mobilized in transgenic plants than the parental controls. Analysis of electronic autoradiograms along the treated leaf lamina found discrete internal regions of glyphosate accumulation closely associated with the site of application. These regions contained lower amounts of glyphosate present in the treated leaf lamina was almost completely translocated in transgenic plants, while in the parental controls more remained and the leaf became necrotic. In both types of maize there was a small accumulation of herbicide in the tip region of the leaf which was not mobilized. Younger shoot tissues and roots were major sinks for translocated glyphosate accumulating approximately 25-40% of the applied dose depending upon treatment. In the parental control, equal amounts of glyphosate were found distributed between young shoot tissues and roots; while in transgenic plants, the young shoot tissue accumulated around three times more glyphosate than the roots. In both plant types, glyphosate was localized in the meristems and young, actively growing leaves. Specific glyphosate activity (the amount of glyphosate per unit dry weight of tissue) in the major sinks of the transgenic declined towards the end of the treatment period but remained relatively constant in the parental control. In conclusion, enhancing glyphosate resistance by genetic transformation influenced the absorption, translocation and distribution of this herbicide in whole plants. Keywords: Zea mays, glyphosate (N-[phosphonomethyl]-glycine), transgenic, absorption, translocation, source-sink.   相似文献

Infection with Erysiphe graminis reduced the weight of the roots and aerial parts of four wheat cultivars of contrasting susceptibility at the three-leaf stage. It had little effect on the more resistant varieties at the five-leaf and flag-leaf stages. When 14C was supplied to the youngest fully expanded leaves at successive stages of growth, the proportion recovered from the roots, and that translocated to other tillers when present, was reduced, especially in the more susceptible cultivars.  相似文献

The patterns of growth, assimilation of 14CO2 and distribution of 14C-labelled assimilate were followed for 12 wk from sowing in individual plants of Lolium perenne grown in miniswards at either low (500 plants m-2) or high (5000 plants m-2) density. At the latter density, plants were characterised by a 50% reduction in RGR, by the production of fewer tillers, especially second- and third-order tillers, and by a reduction in mean tiller weight. All the green and senescing leaves of each tiller assimilated 14CO2 and the overall assimilatory capacity of a tiller was directly related to its dry weight. At both densities the plant consisted of a main shoot and established tillers with comparable assimilatory activities and a range of developing tillers that assimilated relatively small amounts of 14CO2. As each successive primary tiller developed it was supplied with assimilate from the main shoot and the degree of support was inversely proportional to the dry weight of the tiller. At both densities it was concluded that the first primary tiller could be regarded as an independent assimilatory unit when it reached a dry weight of about 25 mg even though some import of main shoot assimilate continued until the tiller was double this weight. The supply of assimilate to the root system was greatly reduced at both densities compared with previous observations on plants grown singly.  相似文献

Ethylene-releasing agents such as ethephon (2-chloroethylphosphonic acid) are used widely to induce flowering in pineapples (Ananas comosus (L.) Merrill). However, ethephon treatment is less reliable in summer, particularly if plants are treated on abnormally hot days. [14C]ethephon was used to follow uptake and translocation in leaf tissues. Up to 30% of the ethephon entered the leaf within 4 h, and up to 60% by 24 h. Uptake was dramatically modified by temperature, relative humidity, solution pH, and the surface on which solution droplets were placed. Entry occurred across the leaf cuticle and probably also by way of stomatal pores, and label was recovered at all depths within the leaf. 14C label entered more rapidly through the abaxial epidermis than through the adaxial epidermis. Low-volume spray applications to whole plants resulted in rapidly drying droplets mainly on the adaxial, distal epidermis and were rather ineffective at inducing flowering, possibly because little ethephon or ethylene reaches the shoot apex. High-volume sprays may facilitate ethephon entry because solution accumulates in leaf axils and hence remains in prolonged contact with abaxial epidermis of leaf bases close to the shoot apex. When poured into the center of the plant, 20% of a normal commercial ethephon dose induced full flowering even under adverse temperatures. It is suggested that high-volume evening spraying and avoidance of hot days may reduce the incidence of flowering failure. Received March 20, 1998; accepted September 6, 1999  相似文献

The movement of 14C-labelled assimilate to the terminal meristem, stem, mature leaves, tillers and roots was measured in Loliurn perenn and Lolium temulentum after exposure to 14C02 of the youngest fully-expanded leaf and, on fewer occasions, the oldest healthy leaf on the main shoot. During early vegetative growth, the terminal meristem, tillers and roots received most of the 14C exported from the youngest leaf. As the shoot aged, more 14C was exported to the terminal meristem and tillers and less to roots. When the stem became a sizeable sink for 14C at the six-leaf (L. temulentum) or eleven-leaf (L. perenne) stage, less 14C moved to tillers and much less to roots. The terminal meristem continued to receive 14 at a steady rate throughout late vegetative growth. The transition from vegetative to reproductive growth in both species was marked by an abrupt increase in the export of 14C to stem from the upper leaf, but there was little change in the proportion of 14C which moved to the developing leaves and incipient inflorescence at the terminal meristem. At the same time, less 14C moved to tillers and much less to roots. Immediately before ear emergence, the export of 14C from the upper leaf (flag leaf) to the stem declined and the proportion moving to the ear increased, reaching a maximum of 55–75% as the ear emerged. The relative patterns of export of upper and lower leaves showed that while some 14 moved from each leaf to all meristems, the proximity of actively growing meristems appeared to be the main factor which determined the destination of most exported 14C. The distribution of 14C from upper and lower leaves was most alike in young vegetative plants of L. perenne. At later stages of development of both species, the terminal meristem and stem received most 1414C from the upper leaf, while roots and tillers received mos 1414C from the oldest leaf at the base of the shoot.  相似文献

Colletotrichum truncatum (Ct) was examined in a tank mix with the herbicide 2,4-D, clopyralid plus MCPA (Caurtail M®), or metribuzin (Sencor®) for control of scentless chamomile at 8- (younger) and 11-leaf stages (older) under controlled conditions. In initial trials, Ct at 7 × 106 spores/ml (200 l/ha) reduced the fresh weight of scentless chamomile only slightly. However, its combinations with herbicides improved the efficacy variably depending on the herbicide used and stage of the weeds. Ct plus 2,4-D reduced the fresh weight by about 50% at both leaf stages of scentless chamomile when compared to untreated controls but no plants were killed. The fungus plus Curtail M consistently killed younger but not older plants, and the efficacy was substantially greater than that of the herbicide alone. The herbicide Sencor was highly effective on younger plants, and adding Ct did not achieve additional benefits. On older plants, however, Ct plus Sencor was substantially more effective than the herbicide alone, causing 76% fresh-weight reduction when compared to controls and killing 9 out of 16 older plants in four trials. Sencor applied alone reduced the fresh weight of older plants by 65%, but no plants were killed. Tested at doses ranging from 2 × 106 to 20 × 106 spores/ml, Ct plus Curtail M was most effective at the highest fungal inoculum dose, consistently killing younger but not older plants. In comparison, Ct at a medium dose (7 × 106 spores/ml) plus Sencor killed the majority of older chamomile plants (7 out of 12), whereas the herbicide alone did not cause plant mortality. Further increasing fungal inoculum dose from this medium level did not enhance the weed control by Ct plus Sencor.  相似文献

Gibberellic acid3 (GA3) modification of some growth and physiologic effects of paclobutrazol (PP333) was studied by applying PP333 alone and in combination with GA3 at the tillering stage of wheat. Results showed that GA3 weakened the effect of PP333 on tillering and shortening the plant, increased the dry matter accumulation of different tillers, improved plant nitrogen metabolism by favoring nitrogen translocation into tillers at late growth stage, and stimulated tiller development. All of these reduced the difference in spike weight among tillers and the main stem. Compared with control, there were more spikes per plant and fewer grain per spike in the PP333 treatment, but all yield components developed positively in the treatment consisting of the mixture of GA3 and PP333. The plant growth regulator PGR-IV has been reported to improve the growth, boll retention, and yield of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) under optimum growing conditions. However, little is known about the response of cotton to PGR-IV under low light stress. A 3-year field study was conducted to determine if applying PGR-IV before an 8-day period of shade (63% light reduction) benefitted the growth and yield of shaded cotton. Shading during early squaring did not affect yield. Shading after the first flower stage significantly increased leaf chlorophyll concentration and fruit abscission and decreased the leaf photosynthetic rate, nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations, and lint yield. Foliar application of PGR-IV at 292 mL ha−1 at early squaring and first flower did not improve the leaf photosynthetic rate of shaded cotton. However, shaded plants receiving PGR-IV had higher nonstructural carbohydrate concentrations in the floral buds and significantly lower fruit abscission than the shaded plants without PGR-IV. Applying PGR-IV to the foliage before shading resulted in a numeric increase (6–18%) in lint yield compared with shaded plants without PGR-IV. The decreased fruit abscission from the application of PGR-IV was associated with improved assimilate translocation. The yield enhancement from foliar application of PGR-IV was attributed to increased fruit retention. However, the average boll weight of shaded plants with PGR-IV tended to be lower than that of shaded plants without PGR-IV. Lint percentage was not affected by PGR-IV. Foliar application of PGR-IV appears beneficial for increasing the fruit retention of shaded cotton. Received June 12, 1997; accepted January 19, 1998  相似文献

The role of imazaquin in the absorption, translocation, and distribution of chlormequat chloride in CYCOCEL* CL has been studied in winter wheat. Three treatments were applied to the 5th leaf of the main stem at growth stage 5 (Feekes Large scale): (1)14C-chlormequat chloride, (2) CYCOCEL* CL containing14C-chlormequat chloride, and (3) CYCOCEL* CL containing14C-imazaquin. Tracing of the radioactivity was followed in the treated leaf, main stem, tillers, and roots. Results showed that more than 85% of the radioactivity absorbed remained in the treated leaf. Ten days after the application of chlormequat chloride alone, 94.4% of the14C-chlormequat was found in the treated leaf, 2.9% in the main stem, 1.2% in the tillers, and 1.4% in the root system versus 88.2, 8.2, 2.1, and 1.4%, respectively, for the chlormequat chloride plus imazaquin treatment. It was concluded that imazaquin increases the mobility and the pattern of distribution of chlormequat chloride in the plant.  相似文献

Soaking summer squash (Cucurbita pepo cv. Eskandarany) seeds in continuously aerated solutions of 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 ppm Co2+ for 48 h before sowing strongly increased plant growth, femaleness, and fruit yield compared with those of water- (control) or 0.5 mm AOA (aminooxyacetic acid)-soaked seeds. Following the same pattern, plants of Co2+-soaked seeds produced significantly higher ethylene levels as early as the seedling stage (14 days after seed sowing) up to the onset of flower initiation (OFI) stage (30 days after seed sowing), with more pronounced levels of all measured parameters for plants of 1.00 ppm Co2+-soaked seeds. Plants of AOA-soaked seeds, however, behaved in a pattern similar to those of control in all measured parameters. The only exception was the significant ethylene inhibition noticed only at the plant seedling stage with AOA-seed soaking, which indicated the short term of AOA inhibition to ethylene when applied as early as the seed germination stage. When AOA was applied foliarly before and at the OFI stage, the increased plant femaleness obtained with Co2+ seed soaking was arrested. It is indicated, therefore, that summer squash plant femaleness is more responsive to plant ethylene-modulated levels before or at the OFI stage than earlier stages. Furthermore, all seed soaking treatments had no effect on plant leaf number or plant and fruit Co2+ content, which strongly indicated that the positive impact of Co2+ on summer squash plant growth and femaleness was mainly the result of the so-called ``low Co2+ level-induced ethylene.' The percentage of fruit yield increase reached about 26, 40, and 56% over the control by 0.25, 0.50, and 1.00 ppm Co2+ seed soaking, respectively, whereas AOA seed soaking resulted in only a 4.5% yield reduction. To ensure the permanent positive impact of Co2+ on ethylene production as well as the short period of AOA inhibition, seeds were resoaked in water or AOA for 8 h after being soaked in 1.00 ppm Co2+ solution for 40 h. The results obtained emphasized the previous findings because AOA inhibition was restricted on ethylene production only at the seedling stage. Meanwhile, all Co2+ positive effects were obtained 2 weeks later, even with AOA seed resoaking. These data strongly suggested that the positive impact of Co2+ on ethylene production is more permanent than the negative impact of AOA. Hence its application, in low concentrations, as early as the seed germination stage, strongly increased summer squash plant growth, femaleness, and fruit yield by increasing the plant ethylene level. Abstract Growth of the second leaf of susceptible wild oat (Avena fatua L.) was inhibited within 2 days after treatment with the herbicide, diclofop-methyl, in the 1-1/2 leaf stage. Leaf growth of resistant wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was unaffected by diclofop-methyl. In wild oat. chlorosis developed 1 day after leaf growth was inhibited. Foliar absorption of diclofop-methyl was similar between wild oat and wheat with 67 and 61% of the recovered radioactivity from [14C]diclofop-methyl being absorbed by wild oat and wheat, respectively, after 4 days. Wild oal was equally sensitive to the methyl ester and acid forms of the herbicide when the compounds were injected into the stem. Wheat was unaffected by both forms when treated similarly. Very little diclofop-methyl and diclofop (combined total of 10 to 12% in wild oat and 5 to 7% in wheat) remained in plant tissues 2 days after leaf treatment in both susceptible and resistant plants. Therefore, the active form of the herbicide must inhibit growth of susceptible plants very rapidly and at relatively low concentrations. Diclofop-methyl was rapidly hydrolyzed to diclofop by wild oat and wheat. Wild oat predominantly conjugated diclofop to an ester conjugate but wheat hydroxylated the 2,4-dichlorophenyl ring and formed a phenolic conjugate. The formation of the different conjugates between wild oat and wheat was the most significant difference in metabolism between the two species. Nearly 60 and 70% of the methanol-soluble radioactivity was present as water-soluble conjugates in wild oat and wheat, respectively, 4 days after treatment.  相似文献

The fate of 100 seedling plants of Lolium perenne L. was studied over a period of 2 years in a field plot. The birth and death of tillers and the production of inflorescences was followed, and the components of seed yield were recorded in detail in the first year. The pattern of distribution of 14CO2 assimilated by the main shoot was examined at monthly intervals and during the first flowering season the distribution of 14C-assimilate from individual leaves and from the inflorescence was also studied. The capacity of individual tillers to assimilate 14CO2 prior to flowering and the re-distribution of previously accumulated assimilate during seed growth were also assessed. Plants died at a more or less constant rate with time and only 54 survived to the end of the 2–yr period. First year mortality was associated with severe grazing or cutting but in the second year the death of ungrazed plants was observed. There was great variability in the production of tillers by surviving plants. In both years the number of live tillers per plant increased from July to the end of April with particularly rapid tillering in March and April establishing the maximum value for each year. There was a similar phase of rapid tillering after flowering in July. The number of live tillers per plant declined by 50% during stem elongation and inflorescence emergence and the majority of dead tillers were young secondary (in the first year) and tertiary (in the second year) tillers with a mean age of 40 days. Such tillers had poor assimilatory capacity prior to the onset of death and were not supplied with assimilate from the main shoot. Most of the plants surviving at the end of the experiment flowered in both years and one quarter of the maximum number of live tillers per plant recorded in April of each year produced inflorescences. The earlier a tiller was produced the greater was its chance of flowering and the greater its production of seed. The greater weight of seed produced was associated with the development of more seed-bearing florets per spikelet. There was relatively little export of “C-assimilate from the flowering main shoot, and the lower internodes formed the major sink for post-anthesis assimilate. The growth of seeds appeared to be relatively independent of the leaves for current assimilate. There was some evidence that assimilate accumulated in lower internodes was remobilised and utilised in the growth of seeds and new tillers. Overall, the results confirm the view that the grass plant is a dynamic population of short-lived tillers and indicate that increasing competition for assimilate at flowering exerts a major influence on the production and survival of tillers.  相似文献

Root-tiller relations were investigated in spring barley grownin soil in deep pots. The total dry wt of the root system reachedits maximum 6 weeks from sowing, when the shoot weight was only50 per cent of its value at maturity. Seminal and nodal rootscomprised 40 and 60 per cent, respectively, of the total rootdry wt at maturity; the majority of the nodal root weight wasassociated with the main shoot. The main shoot had approximatelytwice as many nodal roots as either of the first two primarytillers (T1 and T2), and the primary and secondary tillers appearinglater were very poorly rooted. Some tillers, especially secondarytillers that died prematurely, produced no nodal roots. Theweight of the seminal roots and nodal roots attached to themain shoot continued to increase up to maturity but the drywt of nodal roots on tillers declined with time. This patternof growth was closely related to the pattern of 14C assimilateddistribution within the root system. A very small proportionof 14C assimilated by the main shoot and T1 and T2 was exported. The majority of the exported assimilate went to the seminalroot system and to nodal roots attached to the main shoot. Individualnodal and seminal roots seemed to have different roles in supplyingnutrients to the shoot system, with the former mainly providing32P-phosphate to its tiller of origin and the latter generallysupplying the main shoot and primary tillers.
