Forty men were tested with a computerized dynamometer for concentric and eccentric torques during arm flexion and extension at 0.52, 1.57, and 2.09 rad.s-1. Based on the summed concentric and eccentric torque scores, subjects were placed into a high strength (HS) or low strength (LS) group. The eccentric and concentric segments of the torque-velocity curves (TVCs) were generated using peak torque and constant-angle torque (CAT) at 1.57 and 2.36 rad. Angle of peak torque was also recorded. Compared to LS, HS had significantly greater estimated lean body mass (+10.2 kg) and approximately 25% greater average torque output. Reliability of the peak torque scores on 2 days in 20 subjects was r greater than or equal to 0.85. The difference between observed torques and the mathematically computed criterion torque scores averaged 1% for three validation loads that ranged from 11.4 to 90.4 kg. Statistical analysis revealed that torque output in LS plateaued at low concentric velocities and was also flattened with increasing eccentric velocities. Conversely, torque output for HS increased with decreasing concentric velocities and increased with increasing eccentric velocities. The method of plotting the TVCs for peak or CAT did not influence the pattern of TVC. Eccentric flexion peak torque occurred at a significantly shorter muscle length (1.88 rad) than concentric torque (2.12 rad). We hypothesized that resistance training with combined eccentric and concentric actions, and concentric action only, should yield similar changes in muscular strength. Subjects in a free weight group trained three times a week for 12 wk with eccentric and concentric actions (FW, n = 16), a second group trained with concentric-only contractions using hydraulic resistance (HY; n = 12), and a control group did not train (n = 11). Training for FW and HY included five sets of supine bench press and upright squat at an intensity of 1-6 repetition maximum (RM) plus five supplementary exercises at 5-10 RM for a total of 20 sets per session for approximately 50 min. Testing at pre-, mid-, and posttraining included 1) 1 RM bench press and squat with and 2) without prestretch using free weights; 3)isokinetic peak force and power for bench press and squat at 5 degrees/s, and isotonic peak velocity and power for bench press with 20-kg load and squat with 70-kg load; 4) hydraulic peak bench press force and power, and peak knee extension torque and power at fast and slow speeds; and 5) surface anthropometry (fatfolds and girths to estimate upper arm and thigh volume and muscle area). Changes in overall fatness, muscularity, and muscle + bone cross-sectional area of the limbs did not differ between groups (P greater than 0.05). Although research has demonstrated that isokinetic eccentric (ECC) strength is 20-60% greater than isokinetic concentric (CON) strength, few data exist comparing these strength differences in standard dynamic resistance exercises. The purpose of the study was to determine the difference in maximal dynamic ECC and CON strength for 6 different resistance exercises in young men and women. Ten healthy young men (mean +/- SE, 25.30 +/- 1.34 years), and 10 healthy young women (mean +/- SE, 23.40 +/- 1.37 years) who were regular exercisers with resistance training experience participated in the study. Two sessions were performed to determine CON and ECC 1 repetitions maximum for latissimus pull-down (LTP), leg press (LP), bench press (BP), leg extension (LE), seated military press (MP), and leg curl (LC) exercises. Maximal ECC and maximal CON strength were determined on weight stack machines modified to isolate ECC and CON contractions using steel bars and pulleys such that only 1 type of contraction was performed. Within 2 weeks, participants returned and completed a retest trial in a counterbalanced fashioned. Test-retest reliability was excellent (r = 0.99) for all resistance exercise trials. Men demonstrated 20-60% greater ECC than CON strength (LTP = 32%, LP = 44%, BP = 40%, LE = 35%, MP = 49%, LC = 27%). Women's strength exceeded the proposed parameters for greater ECC strength in 4 exercises, p < 0.05 (LP = 66%, BP = 146%, MP = 161%, LC = 82%). The ECC/CON assessment could help coaches capitalize on muscle strength differences in young men and women during training to aid in program design and injury prevention and to enhance strength development.  相似文献

Day-to-day variability and single-measurement reliability of selected isokinetic knee extension-flexion strength and endurance indices were assessed in 10 adult men and 8 adult women. On three occasions separated by at least 5 days, the subjects completed 4 reciprocal maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) at different angular velocities (1.05 rad.s-1 and 3.14 rad.s-1). The men also completed a muscular endurance test consisting of 30 reciprocal, MVC at 3.14 rad.s-1. Coefficient of variation, intra-class correlation coefficient and standard error of single-measurement scores support the continued use of gravity corrected peak torque (PT) and average peak torque (APT) as indices of isokinetic leg strength. Similarly, gravity corrected APT and total work should be the recommended indices of isokinetic leg muscular endurance in men. The results suggest that these isokinetic indices must be assessed using multiple day-to-day trial protocols adequately to describe performance capacity. Composite indices such as the ratio of Knee flexion to extension PT and fatigue measurements offer considerably reduced reliability and a greater potential for misinterpretation. The reliability of knee extension indices generally exceeds that of flexion indices. Similar variability and reproducibility of responses were observed between men and women and between reciprocal contractions performed at angular velocities of 1.05 rad.s-1 and 3.14 rad.s-1.  相似文献

Measures of knee joint function, although useful in predicting injury, can be misleading because hip position in traditional seated isokinetic tests is dissimilar to when injuries occur. This study aimed to determine the differences between seated and supine peak torques and strength ratios and examine the interaction of position with joint velocity. This was a cross-sectional, repeated measures study. Isokinetic knee extensor and flexor concentric and eccentric peak torque was measured seated and supine (10° hip flexion) at 1.04 and 3.14 rad·s(-1) in 11 Rugby players. Repeated measures analysis of variance and paired t-tests were used to analyze peak torques and strength ratios. Bonferroni post hoc, limits of agreement, and Pearson's correlation were applied. Seated peak torque was typically greater than that for supine for muscle actions and velocities. The values ranged from 109 ± 18 N·m (mean ± σ) for supine hamstring concentric peak torque at 1.04 rad·s(-1) to 330 ± 71 for seated quadriceps eccentric peak torque at 1.04 rad·s(-1). There was a significant position × muscle action interaction; eccentric peak torque was reduced more than concentric in the supine position. Knee joint strength ratios ranged from 0.47 ± 0.06 to 0.86 ± 0.23, with a significant difference in means between supine and seated positions for functional ratio at 3.14 rad·s(-1) observed; for seated it was 0.86 ± 0.23; and for supine, it was 0.68 ± 0.15 (p < 0.05). Limits of agreement for traditional and functional ratios ranged from 1.09 ×/÷ 1.37 to 1.13 ×/÷ 1.51. We conclude that hip angle affects isokinetic peak torques and knee joint strength ratios. Therefore, the hip angle should be nearer 10° when measuring knee joint function because this is more ecologically valid. Using similar protocols, sports practitioners can screen for injury and affect training to minimize injury.  相似文献

Maximal and submaximal activation level of the right knee-extensor muscle group were studied during isometric and slow isokinetic muscular contractions in eight male subjects. The activation level was quantified by means of the twitch interpolation technique. A single electrical impulse was delivered, whatever the contraction mode, on the femoral nerve at a constant 50 degrees knee flexion (0 degrees = full extension). Concentric, eccentric (both at 20 degrees /s velocity), and isometric voluntary activation levels were then calculated. The mean activation levels during maximal eccentric and maximal concentric contractions were 88.3 and 89.7%, respectively, and were significantly lower (P < 0.05) with respect to maximal isometric contractions (95.2%). The relationship between voluntary activation levels and submaximal torques was linearly fitted (P < 0.01): comparison of slopes indicated lower activation levels during submaximal eccentric compared with isometric or concentric contractions. It is concluded that reduced neural drive is present during 20 degrees /s maximal concentric and both maximal and submaximal eccentric contractions. These results indicate a voluntary activation dependency on both tension levels and type of muscular actions in the human knee-extensor muscle group.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hip and knee strength, and valgus knee motion during a single leg squat. Thirty healthy adults (15 men, 15 women) stood on their preferred foot, squatted to approximately 60 deg of knee flexion, and returned to the standing position. Frontal plane knee motion was evaluated using 3-D motion analysis. During Session 2, isokinetic (60 deg/sec) concentric and eccentric hip (abduction/adduction, flexion/extension, and internal/external rotation) and knee (flexion/extension) strength was evaluated. The results demonstrated that hip abduction (r2=0.13), knee flexion (r2=0.18), and knee extension (r2=0.14) peak torque were significant predictors of frontal plane knee motion. Significant negative correlations showed that individuals with greater hip abduction (r=-0.37), knee flexion (r=-0.43), and knee extension (r=-0.37) peak torque exhibited less motion toward the valgus direction. Men exhibited significantly greater absolute peak torque for all motions, excluding eccentric internal rotation. When normalized to body mass, men demonstrated significantly greater strength than women for concentric hip adduction and flexion, knee flexion and extension, and eccentric hip extension. The major findings demonstrate a significant role of hip muscle strength in the control of frontal plane knee motion.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this investigation was to study the eccentric and concentric torque-velocity characteristics of the quadriceps femoris in man using a recently developed combined isometric, concentric and eccentric controlled velocity dynamometer (the SPARK System). A secondary purpose was to compare the method error associated with maximal voluntary concentric and eccentric torque output over a range of testing velocities. 21 males (21-32 years) performed on two separate days maximal voluntary isometric, concentric and eccentric contractions of the quadriceps femoris at 4 isokinetic lever arm velocities of 0 degree.s-1 (isometric), 30 degrees.s-1, 120 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1. Eccentric peak torque and angle-specific torques (measured every 10 degrees from 30 degrees to 70 degrees) did not significantly change from 0 degrees.s-1 to 270 degrees.s-1 (p greater than 0.005) with the exception of angle-specific 40 degrees torque, which significantly increased; p less than 0.05). The mean method error was significantly higher for the eccentric tests (10.6% +/- 1.6%) than for the concentric tests (8.1% +/- 1.7%) (p less than 0.05). The mean method error decreased slightly with increasing concentric velocity (p greater than 0.05), and increased slightly with increasing eccentric velocity (p greater than 0.05). A tension restricting neural mechanism, if active during maximal eccentric contractions, could possibly account for the large difference seen between the present eccentric torque-velocity results and the classic results obtained from isolated animal muscle.  相似文献

Twenty young men trained the right knee extensors and flexors on an isokinetic dynamometer three times weekly over a 10-week period. During each session, 10 men in the slow training group completed three sets of 8 maximal contractions at a rate of 1.05 rad s-1, whereas the other 10, the fast group, completed three sets of 20 contractions at a rate of 4.19 rad s-1. Subjects wer pre- and post-tested for peak torque and power on an isokinetic dynamometer at 1.05, 3.14, and 4.19 rad s-1. Proportions of muscle fibre-types and fibre cross-sectional areas were determined from biopsy specimens taken before and after training from the right vastus lateralis. When testing was conducted at 1.05 rad s-1, the slow group improved (P less than 0.05) peak torque by 24.5 N m (8.5%), but no change was noted for the fast group. Power increased (P less than 0.05) by 32.7 W (13.6%) in the slow group and 5.5 W (2.5%) in the fast. At 3.14 rad s-1, both groups increased (P less than 0.05) peak torque and power. At 4.19 rad s-1, the fast group increased (P less than 0.05) peak torque by 30.0 N m (19.7%), whereas no training effect was observed in the slow group. There was no significant change in power in either group at 4.19 rad s-1. No significant changes were observed over the 10-week training period in percentages of type I, IIa and IIb fibres, but both groups showed significant increases (P less than 0.05) in type I and IIa fibre areas.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Twenty-one male volunteers (ages 23-25 years) were tested pre- and post training for maximal knee extension power at five specific speeds (1.05, 2.09, 3.14, 4.19, and 5.24 rad X s-1) with an isokinetic dynamometer. Subjects were assigned randomly to one of three experimental groups; group S, training at 1.05 rad X s-1 (n = 8), group I, training at 3.14 rad X s-1 (n = 8) or group F, training at 5.24 rad X s-1 (n = 5). Subjects trained the knee extensors by performing 10 maximal voluntary efforts in group S, 30 in group I and 50 in group F six times a week for 8 weeks. Though group S showed significant increases in power at all test speeds, the percent increment decreased with test speed from 24.8% at 1.05 rad X s-1 to 8.6% at 5.24 rad X s-1. Group I showed almost similar increment in power (18.5-22.4 at all test speeds except at 2.09 rad X s-1 (15.4%). On the other hand, group F enhanced power only at faster test speeds (23.9% at 4.19 rad X s-1 and 22.8% at 5.24 rad X s-1).  相似文献

The influence of an eccentric training on torque/angular velocity relationships and coactivation level during maximal voluntary isokinetic elbow flexion was examined. Seventeen subjects divided into two groups (Eccentric Group EG, n = 9 Control Group CG, n = 8) performed on an isokinetic dynamometer, before and after training, maximal isokinetic elbow flexions at eight angular velocities (from - 120 degrees s(-1) under eccentric conditions to 240 degrees s(-1) under concentric conditions), and held maximal and submaximal isometric actions. Under all conditions, the myoelectric activities (EMG) of the biceps and the triceps brachii muscles were recorded and quantified as the RMS value. Eccentric training of the EG consisted of 5x6 eccentric muscle actions at 100 and 120% of one maximal repetition (IRM) for 21 sessions and lasted 7 weeks. In the EG after training, torque was significantly increased at all angular velocities tested (ranging from 11.4% at 30 degrees (s-1) to 45.5% at - 120 degrees s(-1)) (p < 0.05). These changes were accompanied by an increase in the RMS activities of the BB muscle under eccentric conditions (from - 120 to - 30 degrees (s-1)) and at the highest concentric angular velocities (180 and 24 degrees s(-1)) (p < 0.05). The RMS activity of the TB muscle was not affected by the angular velocity in either group for all action modes. The influence of eccentric training on the torque gains under eccentric conditions and for the highest velocities was attributed essentially to neural adaptations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare pure eccentric and concentric isokinetic training with respect to their possible specificity in the adaptation of strength and morphology of the knee extensor muscles. Ten moderately trained male physical education students were divided into groups undertaking eccentric (ETG) and concentric (CTG) training. They performed 10 weeks of maximal isokinetic (90 degrees x s(-1)) training of the left leg, 4x10 repetitions - three times a week, followed by a second 10-week period of similar training of the right-leg. Mean eccentric and concentric peak torques increased by 18% and 2% for ETG and by 10% and 14% for CTG, respectively. The highest increase in peak torque occurred in the eccentric 90 degrees x s(-1) test for ETG (35%) whereas in CTG strength gains ranged 8%-15% at velocities equal or lower than the training velocity. Significant increases in strength were observed in the untrained contra-lateral leg only at the velocity and mode used in ipsilateral training. Cross-sectional area of the quadriceps muscle increased 3%-4% with training in both groups, reaching statistical significance only in ETG. No major changes in muscle fibre composition or areas were detected in biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle for either leg or training group. In conclusion, effects of eccentric training on muscle strength appeared to be more mode and speed specific than corresponding concentric training. Only minor adaptations in gross muscle morphology indicated that other factors, such as changes in neural activation patterns, were causing the specific training-induced gains in muscle strength.  相似文献

A new computerized dynamometer (the SPARK System) is described. The system can measure concentric and eccentric muscle strength (torque) during linear or nonlinear acceleration or deceleration, isokinetic movements up to 400 degrees.s-1, and isometric torque. Studies were performed to assess: I. validity and reproducibility of torque measurements; II. control of lever arm position; III. control of different velocity patterns; IV. control of velocity during subject testing; and, V. intra-individual reproducibility. No significant difference was found between torque values computed by the system and known torque values (p greater than 0.05). No difference was present between programmed and external measurement of the lever arm position. Accelerating, decelerating and isokinetic velocity patterns were highly reproducible, with differences in elapsed time among 10 trials being never greater than 0.001 s. Velocity during concentric and eccentric isokinetic quadriceps contractions at 30 degrees.s-1, 120 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1 never varied by more than 3 degrees.s-1 among subjects (N = 21). Over three days of testing, the overall error for concentric and eccentric quadriceps contraction peak torque values for 5 angular velocities between 30 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1 ranged from 5.8% to 9.0% and 5.8% to 9.6% respectively (N = 25). The results indicate that the SPARK System provides valid and reproducible torque measurements and strict control of velocity. In addition, the intra-individual error is in accordance with those reported for other similar devices.  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the relationships between muscle power output using the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) and maximum strength, as measured by the 1 RM (1 repetition maximum) test and the isokinetic dynamometer under elbow flexion. Sixteen trained, young adult males pulled a constant load of 40% MVC (maximum voluntary elbow flexion contraction) by ballistic elbow flexion under the following two preliminary conditions: 1) the static relaxed muscle state (SR condition) and 2) using the SSC (SSC condition). Muscle power was determined from the product of the pulling velocity and load mass by a power measurement instrument with a rotary encoder. The 1 RM bench press (1RM BP) and isokinetic maximum strength under elbow flexion with the Cybex-325 were measured as indicators of dynamic maximum strength. 1) The early power output exerted under the SSC condition showed a significant and high correlation with the 1 RM BP (r = 0.83), but only moderate correlation with the isokinetic muscle strength (r = 0.50-0.67). 2) The contribution of the 1 RM BP to the early muscle contraction velocity exerted under the SSC condition was large. These results suggested that muscle power exerted using the SSC shows a stronger relationship with maximum muscle strength measured by a 1 RM test rather than isokinetic maximum strength.  相似文献

The effect of three different training programmes on the maximal speed of an unloaded movement (a karate punch) was studied. Three movement variables were selected: maximal speed of the hand (Vh,max), maximal speed of the shoulder (Vs,max) and elbow extension speed (theta E) simultaneous with Vh.max. The programmes were: training group 1 (TG 1, n = 8) - karate students, dynamic heavy progressive resistance exercise (incline situp and incline bench press) + punch bag exercise; training group 2 (TG 2, n = 8)-karate students, punch bag training; training group 3 (TG 3, n = 5)-no karate experience, dynamic heavy progressive resistance exercise (as in TG 1). The movement variables were calculated from chrono-cyclo photographic recordings of the punches (100 Hz). The level of significance was set at 5%. Sixteen weeks of training gave the following results: significant increases in dynamic strength in all the training groups (14%-53%). In TG 1 the Vh.max increased significantly from 8.49 m.s-1, SD 1.19 to 9.35 m.s-1, SD 1.29 (10%); Vs.max increased significantly in TG 1 by 32% (2.18 m.s-1, SD 0.56 to 2.87 m.s-1, SD 0.98) and in TG 2 by 14% (2.40 m.s-1, SD 0.61 to 2.74 m.s-1, SD 0.52), and in TG 3 theta E at Vh,max increased significantly from 28.6 rad.s-1, SD 4.3 to 32.2 rad.s-1, SD 4.5 (13%). The purpose of this study was to investigate the force-producing characteristics of boys aged 13 years in relation to fatigue of elbow flexor muscles. Maximal voluntary force in elbow flexion was measured before and after a muscle endurance test (MET) by using an isokinetic dynamometer isometrically, concentrically and eccentrically at three velocities, i.e. 0.21, 0.52, and 1.05 rad · s–1. The MET consisted of maximal concentric and eccentric muscle actions performed alternately at 0.52 rad · s–1 for 50 consecutive trials. Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) of elbow flexor muscles (biceps brachii and brachialis) was measured by a B-mode ultrasound apparatus. Although eccentric force showed significantly higher values than concentric force during MET, there was no significant difference in the rate of decline in force between the two actions. There was no significant difference in the rate of decline in force after MET for each velocity and muscle action. Isometric, concentric and eccentric force before MET was significantly related to muscle CSA whereas, after MET, concentric force significantly correlated with muscle CSA but there was no significant correlation between muscle CSA and isometric or eccentric force. From our study, it is therefore suggested that in development to maturity, isometric, concentric and eccentric force decrease at the same rate with advancing muscle fatigue; however, there might be differences among muscle actions in facors affecting force development.  相似文献

The effect of an increased angle of excursion and isometric pre-activation on isokinetic torques of knee extensors was investigated in five male subjects, mean age 35.0 years, SD 9.6. Peak torque and isoangular torque at 0.52 rad from full knee extension (FKE) were measured when contractions were carried out at 3.14, 4.19 and 5.24 rad.s-1 starting: 1) from a standard knee angle (SA) of 1.57 rad from FKE, 2) from the same starting angle as SA, plus an isometric preload (P) equivalent to 25% of isometric maximal voluntary contraction and 3) from an increased angle of knee flexion (IA), 2.09 rad from FKE plus P. Surface integrated electromyograms (iEMG) of the vastus lateralis muscle in SA and IA + P were also recorded. The IA + P had the effect of increasing peak torque, as compared to SA, on average by 12.0%, SD 7.5% (P less than 0.001) at 3.14 rad.s-1, 19.5%, SD 5.5% (P less than 0.001) at 4.19 rad.s-1, 21.6%, SD 10.7% (P less than 0.001) at 5.24 rad.s-1 and of increasing mean iEMG by 15.7%, SD 7.0% (P less than 0.001) at 5.24 rad.s-1. The IA + P also had the effect of increasing the angle from FKE at which peak torque occurred: from means of 0.80 rad, SD 0.11 to 1.00 rad, SD 0.07 at 3.14 rad.s-1, from 0.65 rad, SD 0.11 to 0.92 rad, SD 0.09 at 4.19 rad.s-1 and from 0.60 rad, SD 0.11 to 0.88 rad, SD 0.11 at 5.24 rad.s-1 (P less than 0.0001).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 2 days of isokinetic training of the forearm flexors and extensors on strength and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude for the agonist and antagonist muscles. Seventeen men (mean +/- SD age = 21.9 +/- 2.8 years) were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: (a) a training group (TRN; n = 8), or (b) a control group (CTL; n = 9). The subjects in the TRN group were tested for maximal isometric and concentric isokinetic (randomly ordered velocities of 60, 180, and 300 degrees x s(-1)) torque of the dominant forearm flexors and extensors before (pretest) and after (posttest) 2 days of isokinetic strength training. Each training session involved 6 sets of 10 maximal concentric isokinetic muscle actions of the forearm flexors and extensors at a velocity of 180 degrees x s(-1). The subjects in the CTL group were also tested for strength but did not perform any training. Surface EMG signals were detected from the biceps brachii and triceps brachii muscles during the strength testing. The results indicated that there were no significant (p > 0.05) pre- to post-test changes in forearm flexion and extension torque or EMG amplitude for the agonist and antagonist muscles. Thus, unlike previous studies of the quadriceps femoris muscles, these findings for the forearm flexors and extensors suggested that 2 days of isokinetic training may not be sufficient to elicit significant increases in strength. These results may have implications for the number of visits that are required for rehabilitation after injury, surgery, or both.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the strength, electromyographic (EMG), and mechanomyographic (MMG) responses after workouts designed to elicit fatigue and muscle damage vs. only fatigue. Thirteen men (mean ± SD age = 23.7 ± 2.2 years) performed 6 sets of 10 maximal concentric isokinetic (CONexercise) or eccentric isokinetic (ECCexercise) muscle actions of the dominant forearm flexors on 2 separate days. Before (PRE) and after (POST) these workouts, peak torque (PT), surface EMG, and MMG signals were measured during maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic, and isometric muscle actions of the forearm flexors. The subjects also visited the laboratory for a control (CTL) visit with quiet resting between the PRE and POST measurements, rather than performing the CONexercise or ECCexercise. The results showed that there were significant 26 and 25% decreases in PT after the CONexercise and ECCexercise, respectively, and these decreases were statistically equivalent for the concentric, eccentric, and isometric muscle actions. There were also 19 and 23% reductions in normalized EMG amplitude after the CONexercise and ECCexercise, respectively, but no changes in EMG mean frequency (MNF), MMG amplitude, or MMG MNF. These findings demonstrated a neural component(s) to the strength decrement after CONexercise and ECCexercise. It is possible that after these 2 types of exercise, activation of free nerve endings that are sensitive to muscle damage and pH changes resulted in inhibition of alpha motor neurons, causing decreased muscle activation and torque. These findings suggest that training programs designed to minimize strength loss during competition should consider the fact that at least some of this loss is because of neural factors.  相似文献

Four male subjects aged 23-34 years were studied during 60 days of unilateral strength training and 40 days of detraining. Training was carried out four times a week and consisted of six series of ten maximal isokinetic knee extensions at an angular velocity of 2.09 rad.s-1. At the start and at every 20th day of training and detraining, isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), integrated electromyographic activity (iEMG) and quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) assessed at seven fractions of femur length (Lf), by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, were measured on both trained (T) and untrained (UT) legs. Isokinetic torques at 30 degrees before full knee extension were measured before and at the end of training at: 0, 1.05, 2.09, 3.14, 4.19, 5.24 rad.s-1. After 60 days T leg CSA had increased by 8.5% +/- 1.4% (mean +/- SEM, n = 4, p less than 0.001), iEMG by 42.4% +/- 16.5% (p less than 0.01) and MVC by 20.8% +/- 5.4% (p less than 0.01). Changes during detraining had a similar time course to those of training. No changes in UT leg CSA were observed while iEMG and MVC increased by 24.8% +/- 10% (N.S.) and 8.7% +/- 4.3% (N.S.), respectively. The increase in quadriceps muscle CSA was maximal at 2/10 Lf (12.0% +/- 1.5%, p less than 0.01) and minimal, proximally to the knee, at 8/10 Lf (3.5% +/- 1.2%, N.S.). Preferential hypertrophy of the vastus medialis and intermedius muscles compared to those of the rectus femoris and lateralis muscles was observed.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
