Abstract. The effect of sugar feeding on the survival of adult phorid fly Pseudacteon tricuspis is investigated. Flies fed 25% sucrose in aqueous solution continuously throughout their lifespan have greater longevity (mean ± SE longevity: female = 7.9 ± 0.8 days, male = 8.9 ± 0.9 days) than completely starved (provided no water and no sugar solution) flies, sugar-starved (provided water only) flies, or flies fed sugar solution only on their first day of adult life. Completely starved flies rarely lived beyond one day. Provision of water increases longevity by 2 days, and one full day of sugar feeding further increases longevity by an additional 1–2 days. Flies fed 50% sucrose have similar survivorship as those fed 25% sucrose. The temporal patterns of nutrient accumulation and utilization are also compared in P. tricuspis fed different diets: sugar-starved, sucrose-fed on the first day of adult life only, and sucrose-fed continuously. Adult P. tricuspis emerge with no gut sugars, and only minimal amounts of body sugars and glycogen. Although the levels of body sugars and glycogen decline gradually in sugar-starved flies, a single day of sugar feeding results in the accumulation of maximum amounts of gut sugars, body sugars and glycogen. High levels of these nutrients are maintained in female and male phorid flies fed on sucrose continuously over the observation period, whereas nutrient levels decline in flies fed only on the first day of life, beginning 1 day postfeeding. Female and male P. tricuspis emerge with an estimated 12.3 ± 2.3 and 7.2 ± 1 g of lipid reserves per fly, respectively. These teneral amounts represent the highest lipid levels detected in adult flies, irrespective of their diet, and are maintained over the life times of sucrose-fed female and male flies, but declined steadily in sugar-starved females. These data suggest that adult P. tricuspis are capable of converting dietary sucrose to body sugars and glycogen, but not lipids.  相似文献

Fatty acid composition of lipids from adult Glossina morsitans was unaffected by an in vitro fed diet of cow blood which induces production of under-sized offspring compared to that of flies fed on a superior diet of pig blood. The commonest fatty acids were C16:0, C16:1 and C18:1 and only small differences in proportions were detected between virgin and pregnant females. Rate of lipid accumulation by males and females was the same and was unaffected by diet, but males achieved a maximum of 2.5 mg on day 9 while both virgin and fertilised females reached a maximum of 5,0 mg on day 14 of adult life. Lipid content of pregnant flies then fell to 3.0 mg on the day of larviposition and accumulation began again. A cow blood diet reduced the extent to which the lipids were utilised for larval growth and this was reflected in an altered secretory activity cycle in the female uterine gland. However, no effect on the growth of adult fat body was detectable in such flies. Mating and fertilisation, which influence reproductive events through activity of the endrocine system do not seem to affect the acquisition of lipid reserves by female Glossina. However, they clearly exert considerable influence over distribution of such reserves between fat body and uterine gland, which distribution is also affected by diet.  相似文献

Lifetime patterns of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were compared in starved and sucrose‐fed adults of the parasitoid Macrocentrus grandii (Goidanich) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). As expected, sucrose‐fed individuals lived longer than did starved individuals. Macrocentrus grandii males and females eclosed with levels of simple storage sugars (presumably primarily trehalose) and glycogen that were below maximum levels recorded from sucrose‐fed parasitoids. Both of these nutrients dropped to very low levels in starved individuals within 4 days post‐emergence and were maintained at high levels in sucrose‐fed individuals throughout their lives. Lipid reserves at emergence represented the highest lipid levels for both sexes in the two diet treatments, with levels declining over the lifetimes of males and females from both diet treatments. Our results therefore suggest that dietary sucrose is used to synthesize trehalose and glycogen, but not lipids in M. grandii. Also, in contrast to the patterns observed for the simple sugars and glycogen, lipid levels in starved individuals did not drop below levels observed in sugar‐fed individuals. The average number of mature eggs carried by females at emergence was 33 and increased to approximately 85 in sucrose‐fed and 130 in starved females by the age of 5 d in the absence of hosts. The egg maturation rate was therefore higher in starved than in sugar‐fed females. Potential explanations for this unexpected result are discussed.  相似文献

Effectiveness of parasitoids as natural enemies in agro-ecosystems depends on key traits such as fecundity and longevity. Energy sources allocated into survival and reproduction can be mobilized from capital stores acquired during larval feeding, or from income resources through adult feeding. Adult parasitoids have a restricted diet consisting solely of carbohydrates and most species do not replenish lipid levels after emergence from their host. Here, we have adopted a novel approach that could improve pest elimination by parasitoids, in which we added different ratios of olive oil to the food of adults to reveal the potential of a lipid-rich diet to increase lipid levels and allocation into survival. Our results show that males of the parasitoid Cotesia glomerata had higher lipid levels when fed a diet containing a ratio of 90:10% honey to olive oil when compared to males at emergence and males fed honey-only. For females, lipid levels at emergence were similar to those of females fed a diet supplemented with a ratio of 75:25% honey to olive oil, yet in both of these treatments lipid levels were significantly higher when compared to females fed honey-only. This suggests that females on a lipid-containing diet economized on their lipid use. In contrast, the survival of males and females was negatively affected by the addition of olive oil and no differences in survival were found when wasps were fed 1 day on various ratios of honey to olive oil compared to honey-only. Our results show that the addition of a lipid source can increase or maintain nutrient availability and further research into lipid supplementation could minimize detrimental effects in order to increase the effectiveness of parasitoids in certain agro-ecosystems.  相似文献

Because only the first mating results in fertilization in Tetranychus kanzawai (Acari: Tetranychidae), adult males guard quiescent deutonymph females (i.e., precopulatory mate guarding). A previous study reported that quiescent deutonymph females guarded by a male attract more conspecific males than solitary females and then hypothesized that guarded females release more chemical signals than solitary ones to attract males. Quiescent deutonymph females do not feed. If the hypothesis is appropriate, guarded females should invest energy in attracting males at the expense of investment in other activities, such as egg production. Therefore, we compared oviposition rates immediately after adult emergence between guarded females and solitary females. On the first day, the oviposition rate of guarded females was lower than that of solitary females. On the second day, however, there was no significant difference between female groups. These results suggest that guarded females invest energy in activities other than egg production before adult emergence and that the energetic cost is easily recoverable. We believe that our finding indirectly supports the hypothesis that guarded females release more chemical signals than solitary females to attract conspecific males.  相似文献

Abstract.  Mediterranean fruit flies ( Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, Diptera: Tephritidae) harbor a community of diazotrophic bacteria in their digestive system. The present study aims to test the hypothesis that bacteria contribute to fly fitness by enhancing copulatory success and egg production in males and females, respectively. After eclosion, flies were fed a full diet containing peptides, sugar and minerals, or a sugar diet, lacking peptides. Subgroups from each diet were fed a mixture of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin and piperacillin. The presence of bacteria, food consumption, weight gain, lipid and protein levels, oviposition in females and copulatory success of males were quantified in the four groups. The antibiotic treatment effectively cleared the gut of bacteria. The relative amounts of food consumed (with or without antibiotics) are similar in all groups. The antibiotics do not inhibit feeding, and their ingestion does not affect dry weight or the amount of protein stored, yet females feeding on the full diet without antibiotics have increased lipid levels. Females fed the full diet produce significantly more eggs than females on the sugar diet, but the presence of bacteria does not affect numbers of eggs produced. However, in the absence of bacteria, the oviposition rate of nutritionally stressed females is significantly accelerated. The presence of bacteria in sugar fed males does not provide them with a mating advantage. Conversely, in males fed a full diet, the presence of bacteria is associated significantly with a shorter latency to mate. It is concluded that, because the bacterial community is present at all stages of the fly's life cycle, at least some species are effectively transmitted from parents to offspring, and removal of bacteria affects measurable physiological and behavioural parameters related to fitness, the association between bacteria and the medfly is mutualistic.  相似文献

Survival and egg-laying trends were investigated in Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) adults maintained on a sucrose-only diet, or on a full diet that consisted of a 3:1 sucrose and yeast hydrolizate mixture. In addition, we followed the total individual lipid and protein contents of aging flies in a cohort. Survival trends and life expectancy parameters at eclosion for males and females on full diet and for males on sucrose only were very similar. In contrast, the mortality of females on sucrose only was high early in life, but then slowed down. Egg-laying was ten times greater in female flies on full diet than in flies on sucrose only. Lipid contents in males and females on both types of diets were very similar, and harmonically oscillated with an amplitude of approximately 10 days. Successive crests of lipids tended to be smaller with the ageing of the cohort, and lipids contents significantly dropped at very advanced ages and close to the maximal age of the whole cohort. Protein contents of flies maintained on a full diet were high and stayed at a constant level throughout the entire life of the cohort. Protein levels in males and females on sucrose only dropped drastically during the first days of adult life, but then stayed stable at a low level until advanced ages. We propose that the synchronous rhythmic oscillation in lipid contents of male and female flies seems to be independently set by an internal clock. Protein reserves are allocated according to the access to protein food sources and these levels of protein are closely associated to egg production and mortality. Our results are discussed in view of resource allocation during reproduction and senescence.  相似文献

With the aim of developing better procedures for rearing the microtype tachinid fly Pales pavida (Meigen), we performed ecological studies in the laboratory using the natural host Mythimna separata (Walker), investigating larval development, mating behaviour, individual oviposition patterns and relationships between parasitisation and number of eggs ingested (NEI) per host. The host instar at the time of parasitoid egg ingestion significantly affected the development time of the immature parasitoid: development took longer when the hosts ingested eggs when at the fifth instar than at the sixth (last) instar. There was no difficulty obtaining mated females in the laboratory when day 0–1 female flies were kept with day 2–4 males. Mean lifetime fecundity was 5805?±?568 eggs per female. Daily rates of oviposition by individual females varied widely; the greatest number of eggs laid in a day was exactly 1700. When the NEI by day 1 fifth instars or day 0 or 3 last instars was 1, 3, 6 or 10, the parasitisation percentage tended to increase with increasing NEI, although it did not differ significantly between NEI 6 and 10. Therefore, the percentage adult emergence per egg ingested decreased from NEI 6 to 10, particularly in the case of last instars. Using day 0 last instars, with six eggs ingested per host, should increase parasitisation rates and shorten the development time of the parasitoid for rearing.  相似文献

Forced copulation is an extreme form of sexual aggression that can affect the evolution of sex-specific anatomy, morphology, and behavior. To characterize mechanistic and evolutionary aspects of forced copulation, we artificially selected male fruit flies based on their ability to succeed in the naturally prevalent behavior of forced matings with newly eclosed (teneral) females. The low and high forced copulation lineages showed rapid divergence, with the high lineages ultimately showing twice the rates of forced copulation as the low lineages. While males from the high lineages spent more time aggressively pursuing and mounting teneral females, their behavior toward non-teneral and heterospecific females was similar to that of males from the low lineages. Males from the low and high lineages also showed similar levels of male-male aggression. This suggests little or no genetic correlations between sexual aggression and non-aggressive pursuit of females, and between male aggression toward females and males. Surprisingly however, males from the high lineages had twice as high mating success than males from the low lineages when allowed to compete for consensual mating with mature females. In further experiments, we found no evidence for trade-offs associated with high forced mating rates: males from the high lineages did not have lower longevity than males from the low lineages when housed with females, and four generations of relaxed selection did not lead to convergence in forced mating rates. Our data indicate complex interactions among forced copulation success and consensual mating behavior, which we hope to clarify in future genomic work.  相似文献

The bulbous tubular portion of the median ejaculatory duct functions as the accessory gland in the male stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans. The gland started to enlarge after emergence when the fly was fed on sugar-water or blood. Implants of accessory glands from sugar-water or blood-fed males were effective in stimulating oviposition in virgin females. The injection into females of accessory-gland extracts from males fed blood prevented insemination; this extract was effective in concentration as low as 0.25 gland per female. Accessory-gland extracts from sugar-water fed males were only partially effective in preventing female insemination. However, the accessory-gland extracts of male stable flies had little effect on insemination when injected into three other species of female dipterans.Spermatogenesis was completed by the time of emergence, or shortly thereafter, a process independent of blood feeding. Three types of spermatids were identified, forming a continuum of spermiogenesis stages. Fat, fusiform spermatozoa elongated to become thin, elongate and mature spermatozoa.  相似文献

The dispersal rates of wild and culture cabbage root flies Erioischia brassicae were determined in release-recapture experiments at Wellesbourne in 1971–3. The experiments were concerned mainly with the first 7 days of adult life. The flies, released from nine locations in the area, were recaptured in yellow water-traps. Dispersal was affected by wind, rain and the terrain the flies were crossing. The flies least often recaptured were those released into the host crop when 6–12 days old. The results indicated the following pattern of behaviour. Flies moved little during the first 2 days of adult life but by the third day both sexes had dispersed to c. 100 m from the release point. Flies are known to mate about the fourth day and after this the males continued to disperse at c. 100 m per day for the three subsequent days. ‘Wild’ females from field-collected pupae carried out a ‘migratory’ flight, however, and dispersed at c. 1000 m per day during the fifth and sixth days, the days preceding the start of oviposition. Similar rates of dispersal were recorded from flies released across host crop and non-host crop areas. Some females did not stop at the first crop they encountered. The culture females from the laboratory-reared pupae dispersed only c. one-third of the distance of the wild females. There was considerable intermingling of local populations. The percentage recapture of young culture and wild flies released during the pre-oviposition period of this species was 38 ± 4 and 19 ±4 for males, and 15 + 2 and 8+1 for females, respectively. The dispersal range of the cabbage root fly is probably within a 2000–3000 m radius of the site of infestation.  相似文献

Distribution of cabbage root flies in brassica crops   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Changes in the distribution of adult cabbage root flies were determined in 0–05-0-4 ha brassica plots during 1970 and 1971 using yellow water-traps. The three generations of flies occurred at similar times in both years and the numbers caught generally decreased from the first to the third generation. In resident populations, the numbers of males and females declined by 70 and 40% respectively, between the second and third generations. When there was no decline, immigration presumably compensated for flies trapped or otherwise lost. The results confirmed that male cabbage root fly movement is trivial, that wind has little effect on distribution at a brassica plot and that females move into the crop independently of males. They failed to confirm that females aggregate markedly at hedgerows or fences, that they spend little time in the crop or that they regularly return to hedgerows. Differences in the dispersal behaviour of the male and female flies were reflected in the numbers caught. Some males dispersed actively during the first 2 weeks after emergence but many were displaced slowly downwind. Once at a plot, wind appeared to have little effect on distribution of young males, but older males tended to shelter just downwind of the hedge. Relatively few males were caught near hedges but they tended to aggregate along the crop-interfaces, particularly during the first generation. Plot size did not appear to influence the pattern of fly distribution greatly. Females dispersed more actively than males and were generally more uniformly distributed through the crops even during periods of immigration. Gravid females entered an isolated plot without accompanying males, inferring that they are migratory and mate near the site of emergence. Female distribution was not related to the stage of ovarial development except during maximum oviposition when those that had laid some eggs visited the hedgerow. Aged females became progressively easier to capture and usually died in the crop.  相似文献

This study examines the effects of delayed mating on two successive generations of blackheaded fireworm, Rhopobota naevana Hübner (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a pest of cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton (Ericaceae). The first (spring) generation produces eggs that hatch soon after oviposition, whereas the second (summer) generation produces mostly diapause eggs. Unmated female and male moths were placed together on the first, second, fourth, sixth, or eighth day after emergence. In the first generation, incidence of mating was greatest in the 1-, 2-, and 4-day treatments then declined as female survival decreased. In the second generation, incidence of mating was lowest in the 1-day treatment and greatest in the 2-, 4-, and 6-day treatments. Most second generation females in the 6- and 8-day treatments survived to mate. The mean oviposition period was 2.6 days for first generation females and 4.1 days for second generation females. Fecundity of singly mated females in both generations declined as age at mating advanced, but the pattern of decline differed between generations. First generation females that were mated on the first or second day laid more eggs than those mated on the fourth, sixth, or eighth day, and the number of infertile eggs increased as age at mating advanced. Fecundity of second generation females declined more gradually and the number of infertile eggs was greatest for females mated on the first, sixth, or eighth day. A consequence of the marked decline in fecundity due to mating delays in the first generation was that mean fecundity of the entire group of first generation females was ca. 13% less than that of the group of second generation females. On cranberry farms, pheromone-mediated mating disruption can prevent or delay mating of blackheaded fireworm. If the frequency of disrupted (prevented and delayed) matings is similar in the two generations, fewer eggs will be laid in the first generation than in the second.  相似文献

To elucidate the role of the juvenile hormone (JH) in the control of Drosophila reproduction under stress, JH degradation, dopamine (DA) content and reproduction were studied upon 20E treatment in Drosophila virilis females of wild type (wt) and a mutant, with increased 20E level and decreased fertility, under normal and nutritional stress conditions. 20E treatment of wt flies for 7 days results in an increase of DA content in young females, but a decrease in mature females, a decrease of JH degradation in both young and mature females, an 1-day delay in onset of oviposition and a decrease of fecundity to the level typical of mutant flies. One day of 20E treatment in 7-day-old fed and starved flies results in a small decrease of JH degradation in the fed females and a great decrease in the starved ones. Fecundity decreases in the fed flies to the levels of the starved untreated flies in both wt and mutant strains. An oviposition arrest is observed in the treated and the untreated starved, but not in the treated fed, females of both strains. The data obtained suggest ecdysone control of JH metabolism mediated via DA.  相似文献

Female Phormia regina, in general, were found to utilize more oxygen than males especially after approximately the sixth day of adulthood on both a μl/specimen and μl/mg basis. The females exhibited cyclic respiratory rates which correlated with the gonadotrophic cycles. Following its final gonadotrophic cycle the respiratory rates of females progressively declined. The male exhibited its highest respiratory rates during the fifth and tenth days after emergence; thereafter, there was a general decline in respiratory rates. Females have a significantly higher fresh body weight than males when both sexes are fed on a protein diet.Females fed on a protein-deficient diet exhibited significantly higher respiratory rates on a μl/mg basis than females fed on a protein diet. This extremely high respiratory rate was directly correlated with the occurrence of a protein hunger drive. Males fed on a protein-deficient diet also exhibited higher respiratory rates on a μl/mg basis than males fed on protein diet. However, the differences were not as great between the males as compared to the female comparison.  相似文献

Glycogen was detected in the proventriculus of the tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans, by ultrastructural, histochemical, and biochemical methods. This organ contained ten times or more glycogen on a dry weight basis than was found in the thoracic muscle. Proventriculi of male tsetse contained less glycogen than those of females belonging to the same age group and in teneral flies the amount of glycogen was about 50 per cent lower than in mature, fed flies of the same sex. Although the thoracic muscle of tsetse flies was considerably lower in glycogen than that of blowflies the amounts in the proventriculus of mature females of the two insect species were almost equal. It is suggested that this carbohydrate store may supply the energy required for secretory processes.  相似文献

Aging is often associated with accumulation of oxidative damage in proteins and lipids. However, some studies do not support this view, raising the question of whether high levels of oxidative damage are associated with lifespan. In the current investigation, Drosophila melanogaster flies were kept on diets with 2 or 10% of either glucose or fructose. The lifespan, fecundity, and feeding as well as amounts of protein carbonyls (PC) and lipid peroxides (LOOH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST), and glutathione reductase activity of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) were measured in “young” (10‐day old) and “aged” (50‐day old) flies. Flies maintained on diets with 10% carbohydrate lived longer than those on the 2% diets. However, neither lifespan nor fecundity was affected by the type of carbohydrate. The amount of PC was unaffected by diet and age, whereas flies fed on diets with 10% carbohydrate had about fivefold higher amounts of LOOH compared to flies maintained on the 2% carbohydrate diets. Catalase activity was significantly lower in flies fed on diets with 10% carbohydrates compared to flies on 2% carbohydrate diets. The activities of SOD, GST, and TrxR were not affected by the diet or age of the flies. The higher levels of LOOH in flies maintained on 10% carbohydrate did not reduce their lifespan, from which we infer that oxidative damage to only one class of biomolecules, particularly lipids, is not sufficient to influence lifespan.  相似文献

ABSTRACT ABSTRACT During the pupal and adult stages, the JHBP levels displayed a sex-related difference, with females showing higher levels than males. A sharp increase in JHBP levels was observed at day 2 of the pupal stage. After day 2 the JHBP titer declined precipitously, and then remained unchanged until day 12 in males. JHBP titers in females decreased slightly after day 2 and then remained relatively constant until day 12. In both sexes, the JHBP levels showed a steep increase and peaked around day 15. During the previtellogenic period, the JHBP titers declined dramatically until adult ecdysis. During early adult stage, JHBP titiers in the female remained constant at preecdysis level. This information could broaden our understanding of pest physiology during adult metamorphosis, and could have extensive implications for developing insect growth regulators to control agricultural pests.  相似文献

Maturation of the mermithid nematode Reesimermis nielseni to the adult stage began by the tenth day after emergence of the nematodes from their hosts at ambient temperatures (24-27 C). Most postparasitic males and females reached the adult stage after 50 and 70 days, respectively. The first females exhibiting egg development and oviposition were observed 25-30 days after emergence, but some oviposition was still taking place 150 days later. Reesimermis nielseni laid an average 2,480 eggs per female over an 18-day oviposition period. A majority of the mature eggs hatched within 7 h after the cultures were flooded. The preparasites are short-lived, and only a few were able to infect exposed hosts after 72 h.  相似文献
