Lithium (Li) metal anodes have long been counted on to meet the increasing demand for high energy, high‐power rechargeable battery systems but they have been plagued by uncontrollable plating, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation, and the resulting low Coulombic efficiency. These problems are even aggravated under commercial levels of current density and areal capacity testing conditions. In this work, the channel‐like structure of a carbonized eggplant (EP) as a stable “host” for Li metal melt infusion, is utilized. With further interphase modification of lithium fluoride (LiF), the as‐formed EP–LiF composite anode maintains ≈90% Li metal theoretical capacity and can successfully suppress dendrite growth and volume fluctuation during cycling. EP–LiF offers much improved symmetric cell and full‐cell cycling performance with lower and more stable overpotential under various areal capacity and elevated rate capability. Furthermore, carbonized EP serves as a light‐weight high‐performance current collector, achieving an average Coulombic efficiency ≈99.1% in ether‐based electrolytes with 2.2 mAh cm?2 cycling areal capacity. The natural structure of carbonized EP will inspire further artificial designs of electrode frameworks for both Li anode and sulfur cathodes, enabling promising candidates for next‐generation high‐energy density batteries.  相似文献

A facile and scalable approach is reported to stabilize the lithium‐metal anode by regulating the Li nucleation and deposition kinetics with laser‐induced graphene (LIG). By processing polyimide (PI) films on copper foils with a laser, a 3D‐hierarchical composite material is constructed, consisting of a highly conductive copper substrate, a pillared array of flexible PI, and most importantly, porous LIG on the walls of the PI pillars. The high number of defects and heteroatoms present in LIG significantly lowers the Li nucleation barrier compared to the copper foil. An overpotential‐free Li nucleation process is identified at current densities lower than 0.2 mA cm?2. Theoretical computations reveal that the defects serve as nucleation centers during the heterogeneous nucleation of lithium. By adopting such composites, ultrastable lithium‐metal anodes are obtained with high Coulombic efficiencies of ≈99%. Full lithium‐metal cells based on LiFePO4 cathodes with a material loading of ≈15 mg cm?2 and a negative/positive ratio of 5/1 could be cycled over 250 times with a capacity loss of less than 10%. The current work highlights the importance of nucleation kinetics on the stability of metallic anodes and demonstrates a practical method toward long lasting Li‐metal batteries.  相似文献

Lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries are considered to be one of the promising next‐generation energy storage systems. Considerable progress has been achieved in sulfur composite cathodes, but high cycling stability and discharging capacity at the expense of volumetric capacity have offset their advantages. Herein, a functional separator is presented by coating cobalt‐embedded nitrogen‐doped porous carbon nanosheets and graphene on one surface of a commercial polypropylene separator. The coating layer not only suppresses the polysulfide shuttle effect through chemical affinity, but also functions as an electrocatalyst to propel catalytic conversion of intercepted polysulfides. The slurry‐bladed carbon nanotubes/sulfur cathode with 90 wt% sulfur deliver high reversible capacity of 1103 mA h g?1 and volumetric capacity of 1062 mA h cm?3 at 0.2 C, and the freestanding carbon nanofibers/sulfur cathode provides a high discharging capacity of 1190 mA h g?1 and volumetric capacity of 1136 mA h cm?3 at high sulfur content of 78 wt% and sulfur loading of 10.5 mg cm?2. The electrochemical performance is comparable with or even superior to those in the state‐of‐the‐art carbon‐based sulfur cathodes. The separator reported in this work holds great promise for the development of high‐energy‐density Li‐S batteries.  相似文献

Lithium metal is the most promising anode material for next‐generation batteries, owing to its high theoretical specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, the practical application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) has been plagued by the issues of uncontrollable lithium deposition. The multifunctional nanostructured anode can modulate the initial nucleation process of lithium before the extension of dendrites. By combing the theoretical design and experimental validation, a novel nucleation strategy is developed by introducing sulfur (S) to graphene. Through first‐principles simulations, it is found that S atom doping can improve the Li adsorption ability on a large area around the S doping positions. Consequently, S‐doped graphene with five lithiophilic sites rather than a single atomic site can serve as the pristine nucleation area, reducing the uneven Li deposition and improving the electrochemical performance. Modifying Li metal anodes by S‐doped graphene enables an ultralow overpotential of 5.5 mV, a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99% over more than 180 cycles at a current density of 0.5 mA cm?2 for 1.0 mAh cm?2, and a high areal capacity of 3 mAh cm?2. Minimizing electrolyte use is essential to achieve high practical energy density of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. However, the sulfur cathode is more readily passivated under a lean electrolyte condition, resulting in low sulfur utilization. In addition, continuous electrolyte decomposition on the Li metal anode aggravates the problem, provoking rapid capacity decay. In this work, the dual functionalities of NO3? as a high‐donor‐number (DN) salt anion is presented, which improves the sulfur utilization and cycling stability of lean‐electrolyte Li–S batteries. The NO3? anion elevates the solubility of the sulfur species based on its high electron donating ability, achieving a high sulfur utilization of above 1200 mA h g?1. Furthermore, the anion suppresses electrolyte decomposition on the Li metal by regulating the lithium ion (Li+) solvation sheath, enhancing the cycle performance of the lean electrolyte cell. By understanding the anionic effects, this work demonstrates the potential of the high‐DN electrolyte, which is beneficial for both the cathode and anode of Li–S batteries.  相似文献

Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) hybridized with a conductive matrix could potentially serve as a sulfur host for lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) battery electrodes; so far most of the previously studied hybrid structures are in the powder form or thin compact films. This study reports 3D porous MOF@carbon nanotube (CNT) networks by grafting MOFs with tailored particle size uniformly throughout a CNT sponge skeleton. Growing larger‐size MOF particles to entrap the conductive CNT network yields a mutually embedded structure with high stability, and after sulfur encapsulation, it shows an initial discharge capacity of ≈1380 mA h g?1 (at 0.1 C) and excellent cycling stability with a very low fading rate. Furthermore, owing to the 3D porous network that is suitable for enhanced sulfur loading, a remarkable areal capacity of ≈11 mA h cm?2 (at 0.1 C) is obtained, which is much higher than other MOF‐based hybrid electrodes. The mutually embedded MOF@CNTs with simultaneously high specific capacity, areal capacity, and cycling stability represent an advanced candidate for developing high‐performance Li‐S batteries and other energy storage systems.  相似文献

Lithium (Li) metal anodes exhibits the potential to enable rechargeable Li batteries with a high energy density. However, the irreversible plating and stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes with high reactivity and dendrite growth when matching different cathodes in working cells are not fully understood yet. Herein the working manner of very thin Li metal anodes (50 µm, 10 mAh cm?2) is probed with different sequences of Li plating and stripping at 3.0 mA cm?2 and 3.0 mAh cm?2. Dendrite growth and dead Li forms on the surface of the initially plated Li electrode (P‐Li), while Li dendrites form in the pit of the initially stripped Li electrode (S‐Li). This induces the differences in reactive sites, distribution of dead Li, and voltage polarization of Li metal anodes. There is a gap of 15–20 and 13–16 mV for the end voltages between S‐Li and P‐Li during stripping and plating, respectively. When matching LiFePO4 and FePO4 cathodes, P‐Li | LiFePO4 cells exhibit a 30‐cycle longer lifespan with smaller end polarization due to differences in the sequences of Li plating and stripping. This contribution affords emerging working principles for actual Li metal anodes when matching lithium‐containing and lithium‐free cathodes.  相似文献

In this work, a hierarchically porous and ultrathick “breathable” wood‐based cathode for high‐performance Li‐O2 batteries is developed. The 3D carbon matrix obtained from the carbonized and activated wood (denoted as CA‐wood) serves as a superconductive current collector and an ideal porous host for accommodating catalysts. The ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles are uniformly anchored on the porous wall of the aligned microchannels (denoted as CA‐wood/Ru). The aligned open microchannels inside the carbon matrix contribute to unimpeded oxygen gas diffusion. Moreover, the hierarchical pores on the microchannel walls can be facilely impregnated by electrolyte, forming a continuous supply of electrolyte. As a result, numerous ideal triphase active sites are formed where electrolyte, oxygen, and catalyst accumulate on the porous walls of microchannels. Benefiting from the numerous well‐balanced triple‐phase active sites, the assembled Li‐O2 battery with the CA‐wood/Ru cathode (thickness: ≈700 µm) shows a high specific area capacity of 8.58 mA h cm?2 at 0.1 mA cm?2. Moreover, the areal capacity can be further increased to 56.0 mA h cm?2 by using an ultrathick CA‐wood/Ru cathode with a thickness of ≈3.4 mm. The facile ultrathick wood‐based cathodes can be applied to other cathodes to achieve a super high areal capacity without sacrificing the electrochemical performance.  相似文献

Owing to its high theoretical specific capacity (1166 mA h g?1) and particularly its advantage to be paired with a lithium‐metal‐free anode, lithium sulfide (Li2S) is regarded as a much safer cathode for next‐generation advanced lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. However, the low conductivity of Li2S and particularly the severe “polysulfide shuttle” of lithium polysulfide (LiPS) dramatically hinder their practical application in Li–S batteries. To address such issues, herein a bifuctional 3D metal sulfide‐decorated carbon sponge (3DTSC), which is constructed by 1D carbon nanowires cross‐linked with 2D graphene nanosheets with high conductivity and polar 0D metal sulfide nanodots with efficient electrocatalytic activity and strong chemical adsorption capability for LiPSs, is presented. Benefiting from the well‐designed multiscale, multidimensional 3D porous nanoarchitecture with high conductivity, and efficient electrocatalytic and absorption ability, the 3DTSC significantly mitigates LiPS shuttle, improves the utilization of Li2S, and facilitates the transport of electrons and ions. As a result, even with a high Li2S loading of 8 mg cm?2, the freestanding 3DTSC‐Li2S cathode without a polymer binder and metallic current collector delivers outstanding electrochemical performance with a high areal capacity of 8.44 mA h cm?2.  相似文献

Despite the 3–5 fold higher energy density than the conventional Li‐ion cells at a lower cost, commercialization of Li–S batteries is hindered by the insulating nature of sulfur and the dissolution of intermediate polysulfides (Li2S X , 4 < X ≤ 8) into the electrolyte. The authors demonstrate here multichannel carbon nanofibers that are composed of parallel mesoporous channels connected with micropores as sulfur containment. In addition, hydroxyl functional groups are formed on the carbon surface through a chemical activation to enhance the interaction between sulfur and carbon. In the sulfur embedded composite, the mesoporous multichannel enhances the active material utilization and sulfur loading, while the micropores act as a reaction chamber for sulfur component and trap site for polysulfide with the assistance of the functional groups. This sulfur–carbon composite electrode with 2.2 mg cm?2 sulfur displays excellent performance with high rate capability (initial capacity of 1351 mA h g?1 at C/5 rate and 847 mA h g?1 at 5C rate), maintaining 920 mA h g?1 even after 300 cycles (a decay of 0.07% per cycle). Furthermore, a stable reversible capacity of as high as ≈1100 mA h g?1 is realized with a higher sulfur loading of 4.6 mg cm?2.  相似文献

Rational structure design of the current collector along with further engineering of the solid‐electrolyte interphases (SEI) layer is one of the most promising strategies to achieve uniform Li deposition and inhibit uncontrolled growth of Li dendrites. Here, a Li2S layer as an artificial SEI with high compositional uniformity and high lithium ion conductivity is in situ generated on the surface of the 3D porous Cu current collector to regulate homogeneous Li plating/stripping. Both simulations and experiments demonstrate that the Li2S protective layer can passivate the porous Cu skeleton and balance the transport rate of lithium ions and electrons, thereby alleviating the agglomerated Li deposition at the top of the electrode or at the defect area of the SEI layer. As a result, the modified current collector exhibits long‐term cycling of 500 cycles at 1 mA cm?2 and stable electrodeposition capabilities of 4 mAh cm?2 at an ultrahigh current density of 4 mA cm?2. Furthermore, full batteries (LiFePO4 as cathode) paired with this designed 3D anode with only ≈200% extra lithium show superior stability and rate performance than the batteries paired with lithium foil (≈3000% extra lithium). Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are promising candidates for next‐generation energy storage due to their high energy densities on both weight and volume bases. However, LMBs usually undergo uncontrollable lithium deposition, unstable solid electrolyte interphase, and volume expansion, which easily lead to low Coulombic efficiency, poor cycling performance, and even safety hazards, hindering their practical applications for more than forty years. These issues can be further exacerbated if operated at high current densities. Here a stable lithium metal battery enabled by 3D porous poly‐melamine‐formaldehyde (PMF)/Li composite anode is reported. PMF with a large number of polar groups (amine and triazine) can effectively homogenize Li‐ion concentration when these ions approach to the anode surface and thus achieve uniform Li deposition. Moreover, the 3D structured anode can serve as a Li host to mitigate the volume change during Li stripping and plating process. Galvanostatic measurements demonstrate that the 3D composite electrode can achieve high‐lithium Coulombic efficiency of 94.7% at an ultrahigh current density of 10 mA cm?2 after 50 cycles with low hysteresis and smooth voltage plateaus. When coupled with Li4Ti5O12, half‐cells show enhanced rate capabilities and Coulombic efficiencies, opening great opportunities for high‐energy batteries.  相似文献

The application of lithium (Li) metal anodes in Li metal batteries has been hindered by growth of Li dendrites, which lead to short cycling life. Here a Li‐ion‐affinity leaky film as a protection layer is reported to promote a dendrite‐free Li metal anode. The leaky film induces electrokinetic phenomena to enhance Li‐ion transport, leading to a reduced Li‐ion concentration polarization and homogeneous Li‐ion distribution. As a result, the dendrite‐free Li metal anode during Li plating/stripping is demonstrated even at an extremely high deposition capacity (6 mAh cm?2) and current density (40 mA cm?2) with improved Coulombic efficiencies. A full cell battery with the leaky‐film protected Li metal as the anode and high‐areal‐capacity LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM‐811) (≈4.2 mAh cm?2) or LiFePO4 (≈3.8 mAh cm?2) as the cathode shows improved cycling stability and capacity retention, even at lean electrolyte conditions.  相似文献

A NaSICON‐type Li+‐ion conductive membrane with a formula of Li1+ x Y x Zr2? x (PO4)3 (LYZP) (x = 0–0.15) has been explored as a solid‐electrolyte/separator to suppress polysulfide‐crossover in lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. The LYZP membrane with a reasonable Li+‐ion conductivity shows both favorable chemical compatibility with the lithium polysulfide species and exhibits good electrochemical stability under the operating conditions of the Li‐S batteries. Through an integration of the LYZP solid electrolyte with the liquid electrolyte, the hybrid Li‐S batteries show greatly enhanced cyclability in contrast to the conventional Li‐S batteries with the porous polymer (e.g., Celgard) separator. At a rate of C/5, the hybrid Li ||LYZP|| Li2S6 batteries developed in this study (with a Li‐metal anode, a liquid/LYZP hybrid electrolyte, and a dissolved lithium polysulfide cathode) delivers an initial discharge capacity of ≈1000 mA h g?1 (based on the active sulfur material) and retains ≈90% of the initial capacity after 150 cycles with a low capacity fade‐rate of <0.07% per cycle.  相似文献

Significant progress has achieved for developing lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries with high specific capacities and excellent cyclic stability. However, some critical issues emerge when attempts are made to raise the areal sulfur loading and increase the operation current density to meet the standards for various industrial applications. In this work, polyethylenimine‐functionalized carbon dots (PEI‐CDots) are designed and prepared for enhancing performance of the Li–S batteries with high sulfur loadings and operation under high current density situations. Strong chemical binding effects towards polysulfides and fast ion transport property are achieved in the PEI‐CDots‐modified cathodes. At a high current density of 8 mA cm?2, the PEI‐CDots‐modified Li–S battery delivers a reversible areal capacity of 3.3 mAh cm?2 with only 0.07% capacity decay per cycle over 400 cycles at 6.6 mg sulfur loading. Detailed analysis, involving electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations, is done for the elucidation of the underlying enhancement mechanism by the PEI‐CDots. The strongly localized sulfur species and the promoted Li+ ion conductivity at the cathode–electrolyte interface are revealed to enable high‐performance Li–S batteries with high sulfur loading and large operational current.  相似文献

Due to unprecedented features including high‐energy density, low cost, and light weight, lithium–sulfur batteries have been proposed as a promising successor of lithium‐ion batteries. However, unresolved detrimental low Li‐ion transport rates in traditional carbon materials lead to large energy barrier in high sulfur loading batteries, which prevents the lithium–sulfur batteries from commercialization. In this report, to overcome the challenge of increasing both the cycling stability and areal capacity, a metallic oxide composite (NiCo2O4@rGO) is designed to enable a robust separator with low energy barrier for Li‐ion diffusion and simultaneously provide abundant active sites for the catalytic conversion of the polar polysulfides. With a high sulfur‐loading of 6 mg cm?2 and low sulfur/electrolyte ratio of 10, the assembled batteries deliver an initial capacity of 5.04 mAh cm?2 as well as capacity retention of 92% after 400 cycles. The metallic oxide composite NiCo2O4@rGO/PP separator with low Li‐ion diffusion energy barrier opens up the opportunity for lithium–sulfur batteries to achieve long‐cycle, cost‐effective operation toward wide applications in electric vehicles and electronic devices.  相似文献

Covalent organic framework (COF) can grow into self‐exfoliated nanosheets. Their graphene/graphite resembling microtexture and nanostructure suits electrochemical applications. Here, covalent organic nanosheets (CON) with nanopores lined with triazole and phloroglucinol units, neither of which binds lithium strongly, and its potential as an anode in Li‐ion battery are presented. Their fibrous texture enables facile amalgamation as a coin‐cell anode, which exhibits exceptionally high specific capacity of ≈720 mA h g?1 (@100 mA g?1). Its capacity is retained even after 1000 cycles. Increasing the current density from 100 mA g?1 to 1 A g?1 causes the specific capacity to drop only by 20%, which is the lowest among all high‐performing anodic COFs. The majority of the lithium insertion follows an ultrafast diffusion‐controlled intercalation (diffusion coefficient, DLi+ = 5.48 × 10?11 cm2 s?1). The absence of strong Li‐framework bonds in the density functional theory (DFT) optimized structure supports this reversible intercalation. The discrete monomer of the CON shows a specific capacity of only 140 mA h g?1 @50 mA g?1 and no sign of lithium intercalation reveals the crucial role played by the polymeric structure of the CON in this intercalation‐assisted conductivity. The potentials mapped using DFT suggest a substantial electronic driving‐force for the lithium intercalation. The findings underscore the potential of the designer CON as anode material for Li‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Although lithium sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted much interest owing to their high energy densities, synthesis of high‐rate cathodes and understanding their volume expansion behavior still remain challenging. Herein, electrospinning is used to prepare porous carbon nanofiber (PCNF) hosts, where both the pore volume and surface area are tailored by optimizing the sacrificial agent content and the activation temperature. Benefiting from the ameliorating functional features of high electrical conductivity, large pore volume, and Li ion permselective micropores, the PCNF/A550/S electrode activated at 550 °C exhibits a high sulfur loading of 71 wt%, a high capacity of 945 mA h g?1 at 1 C, and excellent high‐rate capability. The in situ transmission electron microscope examination reveals that the lithiation product, Li2S, is contained within the electrode with only ≈35% volume expansion and the carbon host remains intact without fracture. In contrast, the PCNF/A750/S electrode with damaged carbon spheres exhibits sulfur sublimation, a larger volume expansion of over 61%, and overflowing of Li2S, a testament to its poor cyclic stability. These findings provide, for the first time, a new insight into the correlation between volume expansion and electrochemical performance of the electrode, offering a potential design strategy to synthesize high‐rate and stable LSB cathodes.  相似文献

As the theoretical limit of intercalation material‐based lithium‐ion batteries is approached, alternative chemistries based on conversion reactions are presently considered. The conversion of sulfur is particularly appealing as it is associated with a theoretical gravimetric energy density up to 2510 Wh kg?1. In this paper, three different carbon‐iron disulfide‐sulfur (C‐FeS2‐S) composites are proposed as alternative positive electrode materials for all‐solid‐state lithium‐sulfur batteries. These are synthesized through a facile, low‐cost, single‐step ball‐milling procedure. It is found that the crystalline structure (evaluated by X‐ray diffraction) and the morphology of the composites (evaluated by scanning electron microscopy) are greatly influenced by the FeS2:S ratio. Li/LiI‐Li3PS4/C‐FeS2‐S solid‐state cells are tested under galvanostatic conditions, while differential capacity plots are used to discuss the peculiar electrochemical features of these novel materials. These cells deliver capacities as high as 1200 mAh g(FeS2+S)?1 at the intermediate loading of 1 mg cm?2 (1.2 mAh cm?2), and up to 3.55 mAh cm?2 for active material loadings as high as 5 mg cm?2 at 20 °C. Such an excellent performance, rarely reported for (sulfur/metal sulfide)‐based, all solid‐state cells, makes these composites highly promising for real application where high positive electrode loadings are required.  相似文献

Li‐rich layered materials are considered to be the promising low‐cost cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries but they suffer from poor rate capability despite of efforts toward surface coating or foreign dopings. Here, spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres are reported as a new high‐rate cathode material for Li‐ion batteries. The synthetic procedure is relatively simple, involving the formation of uniform carbonate precursor under solvothermal conditions and its subsequent transformation to an assembled microsphere that integrates a spinel‐like component with a layered component by a heat treatment. When calcined at 700 °C, the amount of transition metal Mn and Co in the Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres maintained is similar to at 800 °C, while the structures of constituent particles partially transform from 2D to 3D channels. As a consequence, when tested as a cathode for lithium‐ion batteries, the spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres obtained at 700 °C show a maximum discharge capacity of 185.1 mA h g?1 at a very high current density of 1200 mA g?1 between 2.0 and 4.6 V. Such a capacity is among the highest reported to date at high charge‐discharge rates. Therefore, the present spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres represent an attractive alternative to high‐rate electrode materials for lithium‐ion batteries.  相似文献
