Li‐rich layered materials are considered to be the promising low‐cost cathodes for lithium‐ion batteries but they suffer from poor rate capability despite of efforts toward surface coating or foreign dopings. Here, spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres are reported as a new high‐rate cathode material for Li‐ion batteries. The synthetic procedure is relatively simple, involving the formation of uniform carbonate precursor under solvothermal conditions and its subsequent transformation to an assembled microsphere that integrates a spinel‐like component with a layered component by a heat treatment. When calcined at 700 °C, the amount of transition metal Mn and Co in the Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres maintained is similar to at 800 °C, while the structures of constituent particles partially transform from 2D to 3D channels. As a consequence, when tested as a cathode for lithium‐ion batteries, the spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres obtained at 700 °C show a maximum discharge capacity of 185.1 mA h g?1 at a very high current density of 1200 mA g?1 between 2.0 and 4.6 V. Such a capacity is among the highest reported to date at high charge‐discharge rates. Therefore, the present spinel‐layered Li‐rich Li‐Mn‐Co‐O microspheres represent an attractive alternative to high‐rate electrode materials for lithium‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Spinel‐layered composites, where a high‐voltage spinel is incorporated in a layered lithium‐rich (Li‐rich) cathode material with a nominal composition x{0.6Li2MnO3 · 0.4[LiCo0.333Mn0.333Ni0.333]O2} · (1 – x) Li[Ni0.5Mn1.5]O4 (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1) are synthesized via a hydroxide assisted coprecipitation route to generate high‐energy, high‐power cathode materials for Li‐ion batteries. X‐ray diffraction patterns and the cyclic voltammetry investigations confirm the presence of both the parent components in the composites. The electrochemical investigations performed within a wide potential window show an increased structural stability of the spinel component when incorporated into the composite environment. All the composite materials exhibit initial discharge capacities >200 mAh g–1. The compositions with x = 0.5 and 0.7 show excellent cycling stability among the investigated materials. Moreover, the first cycle Coulombic efficiency achieve a dramatic improvement with the incorporation of the spinel component. More notably, the composite materials with increased spinel component exhibit superior rate capability compared with the parent Li‐rich material especially together with the highest capacity retention for x = 0.5 composition, making this as the optimal high‐energy high‐power material. The mechanisms involved in the symbiotic relationship of the spinel and layered Li‐rich components in the above composites are discussed.  相似文献

Li‐rich layered oxides (LLOs) can deliver almost double the capacity of conventional electrode materials such as LiCoO2 and LiMn2O4; however, voltage fade and capacity degradation are major obstacles to the practical implementation of LLOs in high‐energy lithium‐ion batteries. Herein, hexagonal La0.8Sr0.2MnO3?y (LSM) is used as a protective and phase‐compatible surface layer to stabilize the Li‐rich layered Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 (LM) cathode material. The LSM is Mn? O? M bonded at the LSM/LM interface and functions by preventing the migration of metal ions in the LM associated with capacity degradation as well as enhancing the electrical transfer and ionic conductivity at the interface. The LSM‐coated LM delivers an enhanced reversible capacity of 202 mAh g?1 at 1 C (260 mA g?1) with excellent cycling stability and rate capability (94% capacity retention after 200 cycles and 144 mAh g?1 at 5 C). This work demonstrates that interfacial bonding between coating and bulk material is a successful strategy for the modification of LLO electrodes for the next‐generation of high‐energy Li‐ion batteries.  相似文献

To pursue a higher energy density (>300 Wh kg?1 at the cell level) and a lower cost (<$125 kWh?1 expected at 2022) of Li‐ion batteries for making electric vehicles (EVs) long range and cost‐competitive with internal combustion engine vehicles, developing Ni‐rich/Co‐poor layered cathode (LiNi1?x?yCoxMnyO2, x+y ≤ 0.2) is currently one of the most promising strategies because high Ni content is beneficial to high capacity (>200 mAh g?1) while low Co content is favorable to minimize battery cost. Unfortunately, Ni‐rich cathodes suffer from limited structure stability and electrode/electrolyte interface stability in the charged state, leading to electrode degradation and poor cycling performance. To address these problems, various strategies have been employed such as doping, structural optimization design (e.g., core–shell structure, concentration‐gradient structure, etc.), and surface coating. In this review, five key aspects of Ni‐rich/Co‐poor layered cathode materials are explored: energy density, fast charge capability, service life including cycling life and calendar life, cost and element resources, and safety. This enables a comprehensive analysis of current research advances and challenges from the perspective of both academy and industry to help facilitate practical applications for EVs in the future.  相似文献

Li and Mn‐rich layered oxides, xLi2MnO3·(1–x)LiMO2 (M=Ni, Mn, Co), are promising cathode materials for Li‐ion batteries because of their high specific capacity that can exceed 250 mA h g?1. However, these materials suffer from high 1st cycle irreversible capacity, gradual capacity fading, low rate capability, a substantial charge‐discharge voltage hysteresis, and a large average discharge voltage decay during cycling. The latter detrimental phenomenon is ascribed to irreversible structural transformations upon cycling of these cathodes related to potentials ≥4.5 V required for their charging. Transition metal inactivation along with impedance increase and partial layered‐to‐spinel transformation during cycling are possible reasons for the detrimental voltage fade. Doping of Li, Mn‐rich materials by Na, Mg, Al, Fe, Co, Ru, etc. is useful for stabilizing capacity and mitigating the discharge‐voltage decay of xLi2MnO3·(1–x)LiMO2 electrodes. Surface modifications by thin coatings of Al2O3, V2O5, AlF3, AlPO4, etc. or by gas treatment (for instance, by NH3) can also enhance voltage and capacity stability during cycling. This paper describes the recent literature results and ongoing efforts from our groups to improve the performance of Li, Mn‐rich materials. Focus is also on preparation of cobalt‐free cathodes, which are integrated layered‐spinel materials with high reversible capacity and stable performance.  相似文献

Battery industries and research groups are further investigating LiCoO2 to unravel the capacity at high‐voltages (>4.3 vs Li). The research trends are towards the surface modification of the LiCoO2 and stabilize it structurally and chemically. In this report, the recent progress in the surface‐coating materials i.e., single‐element, binary, and ternary hybrid‐materials etc. and their coating methods are illustrated. Further, the importance of evaluating the surface‐coated LiCoO2 in the Li‐ion full‐cell is highlighted with our recent results. Mg,P‐coated LiCoO2 full‐cells exhibit excellent thermal stability, high‐temperature cycle and room‐temperature rate capabilities with high energy‐density of ≈1.4 W h cc?1 at 10 C and 4.35 V. Besides, pouch‐type full‐cells with high‐loading (18 mg cm?2) electrodes of layered‐Li(Ni,Mn)O2 ‐coated LiCoO2 not only deliver prolonged cycle‐life at room and elevated‐temperatures but also high energy‐density of ≈2 W h cc?1 after 100 cycles at 25 °C and 4.47 V (vs natural graphite). The post‐mortem analyses and experimental results suggest enhanced electrochemical performances are attributed to the mechanistic behaviour of hybrid surface‐coating layers that can mitigate undesirable side reactions and micro‐crack formations on the surface of LiCoO2 at the adverse conditions. Hence, the surface‐engineering of electrode materials could be a viable path to achieve the high‐energy Li‐ion cells for future applications.  相似文献

The design and fabrication of high‐performance all‐plastic batteries is essentially important to achieve future flexible electronics. A major challenge in this field is the lack of stable and reliable soft organic electrodes with satisfactory performance. Here, a novel all‐plastic‐electrode based Li‐ion battery with a single flexible bi‐functional ladderized heterocyclic poly(quinone), (C6O2S2)n, as both cathode and anode is demonstrated. Benefiting from its unique ladder‐like quinone and dithioether structure, the as‐prepared polymer cathode shows a high energy density of 624 Wh kg?1 (vs lithium anode) and a stable battery life of 1000 cycles. Moreover, the as‐fabricated symmetric full‐battery delivers a large capacity of 249 mAh g?1 (at 20 mA g?1), a good capacity retention of 119 mAh g?1 after 250 cycles (at 1.0 A g?1) and a noteworthy energy density up to 276 Wh kg?1. The superior performance of poly(2,3‐dithiino‐1,4‐benzoquinone)‐based electrode rivals most of the state‐of‐the‐art demonstrations on organic‐based metal‐ion shuttling batteries. The study provides an effective strategy to develop stable bi‐functional electrode materials toward the next‐generation of high performance all‐plastic batteries.  相似文献

The eco‐friendly and low‐cost Co‐free Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 is investigated as a positive material for Li‐ion batteries. The electrochemical performance of the 3 at% Fe‐doped material exhibits an optimal performance with a capacity and voltage retention of 70 and 95%, respectively, after 200 cycles at 1C. The effect of iron doping on the electrochemical properties of lithium‐rich layered materials is investigated by means of in situ X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique during the first charge–discharge cycle while high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy is used to follow the structural and chemical change of the electrode material upon long‐term cycling. By means of these characterizations it is concluded that iron doping is a suitable approach for replacing cobalt while mitigating the voltage and capacity degradation of lithium‐rich layered materials. Finally, complete lithium‐ion cells employing Li1.2Mn0.585Ni0.185Fe0.03O2 and graphite show a specific energy of 361 Wh kg?1 at 0.1C rate and very stable performance upon cycling, retaining more than 80% of their initial capacity after 200 cycles at 1C rate. These results highlight the bright prospects of this material to meet the high energy density requirements for electric vehicles.  相似文献

A new approach to intentionally induce phase transition of Li‐excess layered cathode materials for high‐performance lithium ion batteries is reported. In high contrast to the limited layered‐to‐spinel phase transformation that occurred during in situ electrochemical cycles, a Li‐excess layered Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 is completely converted to a Li4Mn5O12‐type spinel product via ex situ ion‐exchanges and a post‐annealing process. Such a layered‐to‐spinel phase conversion is examined using in situ X‐ray diffraction and in situ high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that generation of sufficient lithium ion vacancies within the Li‐excess layered oxide plays a critical role for realizing a complete phase transition. The newly formed spinel material exhibits initial discharge capacities of 313.6, 267.2, 204.0, and 126.3 mAh g?1 when cycled at 0.1, 0.5, 1, and 5 C (1 C = 250 mA g?1), respectively, and can retain a specific capacity of 197.5 mAh g?1 at 1 C after 100 electrochemical cycles, demonstrating remarkably improved rate capability and cycling stability in comparison with the original Li‐excess layered cathode materials. This work sheds light on fundamental understanding of phase transitions within Li‐excess layered oxides. It also provides a novel route for tailoring electrochemical performance of Li‐excess layered cathode materials for high‐capacity lithium ion batteries.  相似文献

Room‐temperature rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries are considered as a promising alternative technology for grid and other storage applications due to their competitive cost benefit and sustainable resource supply, triumphing other battery systems on the market. To facilitate the practical realization of the sodium‐ion technology, the energy density of sodium‐ion batteries needs to be boosted to the level of current commercial Li‐ion batteries. An effective approach would be to elevate the operating voltage of the battery, which requires the use of electrochemically stable cathode materials with high voltage versus Na+/Na. This review summarizes the recent progress with the emerging high‐voltage cathode materials for room‐temperature sodium‐ion batteries, which include layered transitional‐metal oxides, Na‐rich materials, and polyanion compounds. The key challenges and corresponding strategies for these materials are also discussed, with an emphasis placed on the intrinsic structural properties, Na storage electrochemistry, and the voltage variation tendency with respect to the redox reactions. The insights presented in this article can serve as a guide for improving the energy densities of room‐temperature Na‐ion batteries.  相似文献

Cobalt‐free layered lithium‐rich nickel manganese oxides, Li[LixNiyMn1?x?y]O2 (LLNMO), are promising positive electrode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries because of their high energy density and low materials cost. However, substantial voltage decay is inevitable upon electrochemical cycling, which makes this class of materials less practical. It has been proposed that undesirable voltage decay is linked to irreversible structural rearrangement involving irreversible oxygen loss and cation migration. Herein, the authors demonstrate that the voltage decay of the electrode is correlated to Mn4+/Mn3+ redox activation and subsequent cation disordering, which can be remarkably suppressed via simple compositional tuning to induce the formation of Ni3+ in the pristine material. By implementing our new strategy, the Mn4+/Mn3+ reduction is subdued by an alternative redox reaction involving the use of pristine Ni3+ as a redox buffer, which has been designed to be widened from Ni3+/Ni4+ to Ni2+/Ni4+, without compensation for the capacity in principle. Negligible change in the voltage profile of modified LLNMO is observed upon extended cycling, and manganese migration into the lithium layer is significantly suppressed. Based on these findings, we propose a general strategy to suppress the voltage decay of Mn‐containing lithium‐rich oxides to achieve long‐lasting high energy density from this class of materials.  相似文献

Due to unprecedented features including high‐energy density, low cost, and light weight, lithium–sulfur batteries have been proposed as a promising successor of lithium‐ion batteries. However, unresolved detrimental low Li‐ion transport rates in traditional carbon materials lead to large energy barrier in high sulfur loading batteries, which prevents the lithium–sulfur batteries from commercialization. In this report, to overcome the challenge of increasing both the cycling stability and areal capacity, a metallic oxide composite (NiCo2O4@rGO) is designed to enable a robust separator with low energy barrier for Li‐ion diffusion and simultaneously provide abundant active sites for the catalytic conversion of the polar polysulfides. With a high sulfur‐loading of 6 mg cm?2 and low sulfur/electrolyte ratio of 10, the assembled batteries deliver an initial capacity of 5.04 mAh cm?2 as well as capacity retention of 92% after 400 cycles. The metallic oxide composite NiCo2O4@rGO/PP separator with low Li‐ion diffusion energy barrier opens up the opportunity for lithium–sulfur batteries to achieve long‐cycle, cost‐effective operation toward wide applications in electric vehicles and electronic devices.  相似文献

Lithium‐rich layered oxides are promising candidate cathode materials for the Li‐ion batteries with energy densities above 300 Wh kg?1. However, issues such as the voltage hysteresis and decay hinder their commercial applications. Due to the entanglement of the transition metal (TM) migration and the anionic redox upon lithium extraction at high potentials, it is difficult to recognize the origin of these issues in conventional Li‐rich layered oxides. Herein, Li2MoO3 is chosen since prototype material to uncover the reason for the voltage hysteresis as the TM migration and anionic redox can be eliminated below 3.6 V versus Li+/Li in this material. On the basis of comprehensive investigations by neutron powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations, it is clarified that the ordering–disordering transformation of the Mo3O13 clusters induced by the intralayer Mo migration is responsible for the voltage hysteresis in the first cycle; the hysteresis can take place even without the anionic redox or the interlayer Mo migration. A similar suggestion is drawn for its iso‐structured Li2RuO3 (C2/c). These findings are useful for understanding of the voltage hysteresis in other complicated Li‐rich layered oxides.  相似文献

With the rapidly growing demand for low‐cost and safe energy storage, the advanced battery concepts have triggered strong interests beyond the state‐of‐the‐art Li‐ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, a novel hybrid Li/Na‐ion full battery (HLNIB) composed of the high‐energy and lithium‐free Na3V2(PO4)2O2F (NVPOF) cathode and commercial graphite anode mesophase carbon micro beads is for the first time designed. The assembled HLNIBs exhibit two high working voltage at about 4.05 and 3.69 V with a specific capacity of 112.7 mA h g?1. Its energy density can reach up to 328 W h kg?1 calculated from the total mass of both cathode and anode materials. Moreover, the HLNIBs show outstanding high‐rate capability, long‐term cycle life, and excellent low‐temperature performance. In addition, the reaction kinetics and Li/Na‐insertion/extraction mechanism into/out NVPOF is preliminarily investigated by the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and ex situ X‐ray diffraction. This work provides a new and profound direction to develop advanced hybrid batteries.  相似文献

Various doped materials have been investigated to improve the structural stability of layered transition metal oxides for lithium‐ion batteries. Most doped materials are obtained through solid state methods, in which the doping of cations is not strictly site selective. This paper demonstrates, for the first time, an in situ electrochemical site‐selective doping process that selectively substitutes Li+ at Li sites in Mn‐rich layered oxides with Mg2+. Mg2+ cations are electrochemically intercalated into Li sites in delithiated Mn‐rich layered oxides, resulting in the formation of [Li1?xMgy][Mn1?zMz]O2 (M = Co and Ni). This Mg2+ intercalation is irreversible, leading to the favorable doping of Mg2+ at the Li sites. More interestingly, the amount of intercalated Mg2+ dopants increases with the increasing amount of Mn in Li1?x[Mn1?zMz]O2, which is attributed to the fact that the Mn‐to‐O electron transfer enhances the attractive interaction between Mg2+ dopants and electronegative Oδ? atoms. Moreover, Mg2+ at the Li sites in layered oxides suppresses cation mixing during cycling, resulting in markedly improved capacity retention over 200 cycles. The first‐principle calculations further clarify the role of Mg2+ in reduced cation mixing during cycling. The new concept of in situ electrochemical doping provides a new avenue for the development of various selectively doped materials.  相似文献

Delivery of high‐energy density with long cycle life is facing a severe challenge in developing cathode materials for rechargeable sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Here a composite Na0.6MnO2 with layered–tunnel structure combining intergrowth morphology of nanoplates and nanorods for SIBs, which is clearly confirmed by micro scanning electron microscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy as well as scanning transmission electron microscopy with atomic resolution is presented. Owing to the integrated advantages of P2 layered structure with high capacity and that of the tunnel structure with excellent cycling stability and superior rate performance, the composite electrode delivers a reversible discharge capacity of 198.2 mAh g?1 at 0.2C rate, leading to a high‐energy density of 520.4 Wh kg?1. This intergrowth integration engineering strategy may modulate the physical and chemical properties in oxide cathodes and provide new perspectives on the optimal design of high‐energy density and high‐stable materials for SIBs.  相似文献

LiNixMnyCo1?x?yO2 (NMC) cathode materials with Ni ≥ 0.8 have attracted great interest for high energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) but their practical applications under high charge voltages (e.g., 4.4 V and above) still face significant challenges due to severe capacity fading by the unstable cathode/electrolyte interface. Here, an advanced electrolyte is developed that has a high oxidation potential over 4.9 V and enables NMC811‐based LIBs to achieve excellent cycling stability in 2.5–4.4 V at room temperature and 60 °C, good rate capabilities under fast charging and discharging up to 3C rate (1C = 2.8 mA cm?2), and superior low‐temperature discharge performance down to ?30 °C with a capacity retention of 85.6% at C/5 rate. It is also demonstrated that the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, not the electrolyte conductivity and viscosity, govern the LIB performance. This work sheds light on a very promising strategy to develop new electrolytes for fast‐charging high‐energy LIBs in a wide‐temperature range.  相似文献

Vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) layered nanostructures are known to have very stable crystal structures and high faradaic activity. The low electronic conductivity of V2O5 greatly limits the application of vanadium oxide as electrode materials and requires combining with conducting materials using binders. It is well known that the organic binders can degrade the overall performance of electrode materials and need carefully controlled compositions. In this study, we develop a simple method for preparing freestanding carbon nanotube (CNT)‐V2O5 nanowire (VNW) composite paper electrodes without using binders. Coin cell type (CR2032) supercapacitors are assembled using the nanocomposite paper electrode as the anode and high surface area carbon fiber electrode (Spectracarb 2225) as the cathode. The supercapacitor with CNT‐VNW composite paper electrode exhibits a power density of 5.26 kW Kg?1 and an energy density of 46.3 Wh Kg?1. (Li)VNWs and CNT composite paper electrodes can be fabricated in similar manner and show improved overall performance with a power density of 8.32 kW Kg?1 and an energy density of 65.9 Wh Kg?1. The power and energy density values suggest that such flexible hybrid nanocomposite paper electrodes may be useful for high performance electrochemical supercapacitors.  相似文献

High energy density Li‐ion hybrid flow capacitors are demonstrated by employing LiMn2O4 and activated carbon slurry electrodes. Compared to the existing aqueous flow electrochemical capacitors, the hybrid one exhibits much higher energy densities due to the introduction of high capacity Li‐insertion materials (e.g., LiMn2O4 in the present work) as the flowable electrode with asymmetrical cell configuration. A record energy density, i.e., 23.4 W h kg?1 at a power of 50.0 W kg?1 has been achieved for aqueous flow capacitors tested at static condition reported to date. A full operational Li‐ion flow capacitor tested in an intermittent‐flow mode has also been demonstrated. The Li‐ion hybrid flow capacitor shows great promise for high‐rate grid applications.  相似文献

A challenge still remains to develop high‐performance and cost‐effective air electrode for Li‐O2 batteries with high capacity, enhanced rate capability and long cycle life (100 times or above) despite recent advances in this field. In this work, a new design of binder‐free air electrode composed of three‐dimensional (3D) graphene (G) and flower‐like δ‐MnO2 (3D‐G‐MnO2) has been proposed. In this design, graphene and δ‐MnO2 grow directly on the skeleton of Ni foam that inherits the interconnected 3D scaffold of Ni foam. Li‐O2 batteries with 3D‐G‐MnO2 electrode can yield a high discharge capacity of 3660 mAh g?1 at 0.083 mA cm?2. The battery can sustain 132 cycles at a capacity of 492 mAh g?1 (1000 mAh gcarbon ?1) with low overpotentials under a high current density of 0.333 mA cm?2. A high average energy density of 1350 Wh Kg?1 is maintained over 110 cycles at this high current density. The excellent catalytic activity of 3D‐G‐MnO2 makes it an attractive air electrode for high‐performance Li‐O2 batteries.  相似文献
