Background

The purpose of this study was to examine maturity-related differences in anthropometry and body composition in Japanese youth within a single year.

Methods

Two hundred and ten Japanese youth aged from 13 to 13.99 years participated in this study. Their maturity status was assessed using a self-assessment of stage of pubic hair development. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was used to estimate percent body fat and lean body mass (LBM). Muscle thickness of the anterior thigh, posterior lower leg and rectus abdominis muscles were measured by ultrasound.

Results

For boys, height, body weight, and LBM in less mature groups were lower than that in more mature groups. The maturity-related differences were still significant after adjusting for chronological age. On the other hand, muscle thickness values in the lower extremity and abdomen differed among the groups at different stages of pubic hair development, whereas there was no maturity-related difference in the relative values corrected by LBM, except for those thickness values measured at the abdomen. For girls, only the muscle thickness at the anterior thigh and muscle thickness relative to LBM1/3 at the posterior lower leg was significantly affected by maturity status, but significant maturity-related difference was not found after adjusting for chronological age.

Conclusions

At least for Japanese boys and girls aged 13 years, maturity status affected body size in boys, but not in girls, and the influence of maturation on the muscularity of the lower extremity and trunk muscles is less in both sexes.  相似文献

The whole thigh muscles are covered with the fascia lata, which could have morphological and mechanical features that match the underlying muscles’ functions. In this study, we investigated the morphological and elastic properties of the human fascia lata taken from four (anterior, medial, lateral, and posterior) sites on the thigh of 17 legs of 12 cadavers (6 males and 6 females, 75–92 years). The thickness of the fascia lata was determined with a caliper. The interwoven collagen fiber’s directions were measured and classified into longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal in two opposing directions, relative to the thigh. Tensile strength test along the longitudinal and transverse directions was performed, and the stiffness, Young’s modulus, and hysteresis were determined. Fascia lata at the lateral site (0.8 ± 0.2 mm) was significantly thicker compared to other sites (0.2–0.3 mm). Fiber’s directions showed substantial variability among sites, and longitudinally directed fibers were higher in proportion (28–32%) than those in other directions (20–27%) at all sites except for the posterior site. The stiffness and Young’s modulus in the longitudinal direction (20–283 N/mm; 71.6–275.9 MPa, highest at the lateral site) were significantly higher than in the transverse direction (3–16 N/mm; 3.2–41.9 MPa, lowest at the lateral site). At the medial site, the proportion of the transversely directed fibers was higher in females than males, with higher stiffness and Young’s modulus thereof. The present study shows that the fascia lata possesses site- and gender-dependence of the morphological characteristics and elastic properties.  相似文献

Sex differences in the distribution of subcutaneous and internal fat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
One-hundred twenty-one male and 93 female subjects, aged 18-23 years, were selected for an investigation of the proportion of subcutaneous to total fat in the whole body. Body fat mass was calculated from body density using the Siri equation. Subcutaneous fat mass was calculated by measuring skinfold thickness at 15 sites and using a modification of the equation derived by Skerjl, Brozek, and Hunt. The main modification to this equation was the introduction of a midlayer area of subcutaneous tissue that is multiplied by fat thickness to give fat volume. The outermost body surface area, which has been utilized in previous research, results in an overestimation of the true subcutaneous fat mass. The average percentages of fat situated subcutaneously (PFSSs) were calculated as 53.7% for males and 62.6% for females. This sex difference is also seen in correlation-regression analysis of PFSS and percentage of fat. In females PFSS decreases with increasing total percentage of fat, whereas in males there is no significant relationship between PFSS and total percentage of fat. This suggests that the proportion of subcutaneous to total fat distribution is negatively related to fatness in females.  相似文献

1. 1. To evaluate the distribution patterns of subcutaneous fat and muscle 679 male and 950 female Japanese volunteers were investigated by means of ultrasonic tomography.

2. 2. With an increase in age the thickness of the anterior thigh muscle decreased, whilst subscapula muscle thickness was independent of age.

3. 3. In comparing a resident in a city (Tokyo) to a country resident (farmer in Yamagata) the arm muscle of a farmer was thicker than that of a cityman, while the thigh muscle was lower in the farmer.

4. 4. Muscle thickness is related to its cross-sectional area and the muscle area is affected by activity level in daily physical exercise.

5. 5. The present data indicate that the farmer makes less use of his legs than does the city dweller.

6. 6. There were significant correlation coefficients between fat thickness and HDL-C, i.e. the highest correlation was observed at the abdomen, suggesting that the fat thickness of the abdomen is one of the important factors for evaluating serum cholesterol level.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between body fat measured by DXA and subcutaneous adipose tissue layers (SAT-layers) measured by LIPOMETER in adult males (n=28) and females (n=53). Body height and mass were measured and BMI was calculated (kg/m2). Measurements of the thicknesses of SAT-layers by LIPOMETER were performed at 15 original body sites. Body composition was measured using DXA. Total body fat % measured by DXA was highly dependent on the SAT-layers in the upper back and inner thigh in males (87.1%, R(2)x100) and the lateral chest, biceps, and calf in females (78.5%, R(2)x100). There were gender differences in trunk fat mass and right hand and leg fat mass calculation using specific SAT-layers. In conclusion, our results indicate that there are close relationships between SAT-layers and body fat measured by DXA. However, there are big differences between genders.  相似文献

Objective

We aimed to assess the effects of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and anatomical site on skin thickness in children and adults with diabetes.

Methods

We studied 103 otherwise healthy children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes aged 5–19 years, and 140 adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes aged 20–85 years. The thicknesses of both the dermis and subcutis were assessed using ultrasound with a linear array transducer, on abdominal and thigh skin.

Results

There was an age-related thickening of both dermis (p<0.0001) and subcutis (p = 0.013) in children and adolescents. Girls displayed a substantial pubertal increase in subcutis of the thigh (+54%; p = 0.048) and abdomen (+68%; p = 0.009). Adults showed an age-related decrease in dermal (p = 0.021) and subcutis (p = 0.009) thicknesses. Pubertal girls had a thicker subcutis than pubertal boys in both thigh (16.7 vs 7.5 mm; p<0.0001) and abdomen (16.7 vs 8.8 mm; p<0.0001). Men had greater thigh dermal thickness than women (1.89 vs 1.65 mm; p = 0.003), while the subcutis was thicker in women in thigh (21.3 vs 17.9 mm; p = 0.012) and abdomen (17.7 vs 9.8 mm; p<0.0001). In boys, men, and women, both dermis and subcutis were thicker on the abdomen compared to thigh; in girls this was only so for dermal thickness. In both children and adults, the skin (dermis and subcutis) became steadily thicker with increasing BMI (p<0.0001).

Conclusions

Skin thickness is affected by age, pubertal status, gender, BMI, and anatomical site. Such differences may be important when considering appropriate sites for dermal/subcutaneous injections and other transdermal delivery systems.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of the way of probe application on the values of subcutaneous fat thickness by use of A-mode ultrasonography . Subjects were six healthy male adults ranging in age from 19 to 35 years. Scapular, triceps, supra-iliac, abdomen, and thigh were chosen for the measurement sites. Observed values of subcutaneous fat decreased with the increase of pressure at scapular, supra-iliac, and abdomen for relatively fatty subjects, but not for lean subjects. However, the values showed little change at triceps and thigh for all subjects. There was no relation between the pressure of probe and the stability of the value. The values were also influenced by the displacement of the probe on skin. Moreover, it was shown that the difference of the angle between probe and skin influenced the values of subcutaneous fat thickness. A-mode ultrasonography++ has many advantages, if it is properly operated considering the above problems.  相似文献

Lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity is necessary for adipocytes to take up triglycerides from the circulation, and regional differences in LPL activity could help determine regional fat storage. LPL activity has been reported to increase as a function of fat cell size, but this issue has not been extensively evaluated in different depots comparing sexes. Our objective was to determine whether sex alters the relationship between LPL activity and fat cell size. Subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were taken from the abdomen and thigh after an overnight fast and 1 h after a meal in 65 females (BMI 25.4 +/- 0.8, means +/- SE) and 41 males (BMI 23.7 +/- 0.3); gluteal adipose samples were obtained in 47 of the females and 27 of the males. Fat cell size was greater in females than males in thigh (P < 0.005) and gluteal (P < 0.05) regions but not in the abdomen. There was a relationship between fasting LPL activity/fat cell and fat cell size in females (abdomen r2 = 0.52, P < 0.0001; gluteal r2 = 0.23, P < 0.005; thigh r2 = 0.19, P < 0.005). In males, this relationship was seen only in the abdomen (r2 = 0.51, P < 0.0001) and thigh (r2 = 0.17, P < 0.05). Males and females had a significantly different relationship in the thigh only in the fasted state. Similar results were found in the fed state, although the strength of the relationship decreased in the abdominal regions for females only. This suggests fundamental differences in the regulation of triglyceride uptake between males and females and adipose regions.  相似文献

Normative age- and gender-related changes in body composition, serum lipids, testosterone, and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) were examined in the Cayo Santiago free-ranging rhesus macaques. In both adult males and females, body weights, crown-rump lengths, and circumference of the limbs were lowest in the oldest group (20+ years of age) as compared with other adult age classes. Body fat, as reflected in subcutaneous fatfold thickness and waist/thigh ratios, were higher in adult females than adult males. This gender dimorphism was first detectable among the 6-9 year old age group. Greatest body fat among females was observed in the 10-14 age group, whereas in males the highest values were observed in the 15-19 age group. Differences in body composition were also observed with respect to reproductive status. Although there were no gender differences in overall cholesterol levels, there were age-related differences between males and females, and only in males were cholesterol values positively related to adiposity. There were no age- or gender-related differences in triglyceride values, but levels were significantly higher in pregnant females in comparison with other reproductive states. Levels of testosterone were not significantly related to any morphometric parameter and values did not decrease significantly with age. Levels of IGF-1 exhibited a significant age-related decrease among adult males, and females had higher levels independent of age. The similarities between the present findings and human studies suggest that further studies in the free-ranging rhesus macaques would provide a bridge between studies of laboratory-housed primates and studies of human beings with respect to the etiology of obesity and life-history changes in body composition and endocrine and metabolic parameters.  相似文献

In odontocetes the mandibular bone serves two functions: to capture prey, and as a means of the reception and transmission of sound waves through a fat body in the mandibular canal, which opens posteriorly as the mandibular foramen. The posterior part of the lateral wall of the odontocete mandible is thin, and appears to represent a compromise between a strong mandible for prey capture and a thin vibrating plate for hearing. We studied the intraspecific variation of minimum thickness of the lateral mandibular wall along four transects (T1-T4) at the area of the mandibular foramen, in relation to the skull size and the mandibular size in different-aged bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus (18 females between 1 and 42 yr, 17 males between 1 and 32 yr). The minimum thickness was absolutely at its lowest at the most posterior transect T1, but did not vary significantly between the sexes or between the ages. The minimum thickness varied significantly at the two most anterior transects, T3 and T4, both between the sexes and among the ages. The thickness increased throughout life among males, whereas in females it first increased and then starts to decrease around the age of 20.  相似文献

This study explores age-related thinning of cortical bone in an area of the femur that is becoming of increasing clinical interest. It is based on measurements of medial-lateral and posterior-anterior radiographs of the proximal one-third of the right femur, below the greater trochanter. The study population consisted of 458 skeletons from the Terry collection and included approximately equal numbers of blacks and whites, males and females, aged 20 to 98 years. Cortical thicknesses were measured at 11 levels, beginning with a line drawn perpendicular to the linea aspera at the level of the inferior border of the greater trochanter. The four quadrants (medial, lateral, anterior, posterior) differed in amount of change with age. In general, except for the relatively thick medial cortex, intertrochanteric levels showed less change than subtrochanteric levels. It is postulated that this is because the greatest remodeling activity takes place in trabecular rather than cortical bone in the intertrochanteric region. The anterior and posterior cortex showed the most regular and greatest amount of thinning with age. In males at lower levels, there was little or no loss in either medial or lateral cortex, but females showed considerable loss after the sixth decade. It is suggested that a stress-related “maintenance” factor retards cortical thinning in these quadrants. A review of the literature suggests that age-related cortical loss in the femur may have been accelerated in archaeological population, compared with modern groups.  相似文献

A comparative study of subcutaneous adiposity and relative fat patterning in adult White (n=262) and migrant Indian (n=39) and Pakistani (n=100) males living in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire revealed no significant difference in the level of generalised adiposity (measured as body mass index) between the ethnic groups. However, Asians had significantly higher means for all five truncal skinfolds; for all upper body: upper extremity, upper body: lower extremity, central body: upper extremity and central body: lower extremity skinfold rations; more total subcutaneous adiposity; and significantly more subcutaneous fat in subscapular, suprailiac and abdomen regions relative to total subcutaneous fat. However, Asian men had significantly less subcutaneous fat in all the extremity sites relative to total subcutaneous adiposity and lower mean forearm subcutaneous adiposity. Discriminant analysis revealed that 80.6% of all individuals were correctly classfied, with Whites being grouped more correctly than Asians. Suprailiac/forearm and suprailiac/triceps skinfold ratios, height, weight, age, body mass index, and subscapular, midauxillary, chest and medial calf skinfolds were among the most important discriminating variables/ratios of the three ethnic groups.  相似文献

Long-term glucocorticoid excess decreases peripheral and increases abdominal subcutaneous thickness. Short-term prednisolone treatment is used in the treatment of many acute and chronic conditions in children. The aim of the present study was to elucidate if changes in thickness of cutis, subcutis, or dermal water content may be induced by short-term prednisolone treatment in children.Twenty children with asthma aged 7.7-13.8 years were included in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial. Active treatment was 5mg prednisolone daily. Treatment, run-in, and wash-out periods were 1 week. On days 1 and 7 of each treatment period, 20 MHz ultrasound scanning of the skin was performed on the thigh, forearm, and abdomen.Prednisolone treatment was associated with decreases in the total thickness of the cutis and subcutis in the thigh (0.28 mm) and forearm (0.15 mm), and an increase in the abdomen (0.23 mm). During placebo treatment the thickness was increased in the thigh (0.07 mm) and abdomen (0.05 mm), and reduced in the forearm (0.03 mm). The differences between prednisolone and placebo treatment were statistically significant in the thigh (P=0.04). The increase in thickness in the abdomen during prednisolone treatment was statistically significantly different from the reductions in the thigh (P=0.03) and forearm (P=0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the dermal thickness or water content during prednisolone treatment compared to placebo.Short-term treatment with 5mg prednisolone daily may cause differential effects in peripheral and abdominal subcutaneous thickness in children.  相似文献

Background

Body mass index (BMI), expressed as the ratio of body mass to height squared (kg/m2), involves not only fat but also lean mass. The present study aimed to clarify how BMI is associated with total muscle mass (TMM) in older Japanese women and men.

Findings

Using a B-mode ultrasound apparatus, muscle thickness was measured at nine sites (forearm, upper arm anterior and posterior, thigh anterior and posterior, lower leg anterior and posterior, abdomen, and subscapular) for 346 women (BMI 16.40 to 33.11 kg/m2) and 286 men (BMI 16.86 to 31.18 kg/m2) aged 60.0 to 79.5 yrs. TMM was estimated using the product of the sum of the muscle thicknesses at the nine sites with height as an independent variable. For both sexes, the estimated TMM relative to height squared was significantly correlated with BMI (r = 0.688, P<0.0001 for women; r = 0.696, P<0.0001 for men), but the percentage of the estimated TMM in body mass was not.

Conclusion

These results indicate that, for older Japanese women and men, BMI is a simple and convenient index for assessing total muscularity.  相似文献

Subcutaneous fatfolds in 6440 subjects aged 3–90 (including 3427 males) from 5 populations in Poland inhabiting rural areas, showing different degrees of urbanization and industrialization, were measured at 10 sites of the body with the Parizkova method using the Harpenden caliper. The examination covered also 988 children, aged 1–36 months from Warsaw. On the basis of the measurement of 4 fat-folds examined in the following order: on the cheek, under the scapula, on the abdomen and the calf, 18 types of the distribution of the adipose tissue (patterning) were identified. These were described with the following coding: 1=scanty, 2=medium, 3=thick. The types showing the statistically relevant surpluses are: 1111, 1112, 1221, 1222, 1333, 2111, 2112, 2121, 2211, 2221, 2222, 2223, 2332, 2333, 3222, 3223, 3332, 3333. Type 1111 prevails in rural populations, but is also frequent in populations inhabiting strongly industrialized areas. In the rural populations inhabiting areas under the initial stage of industrialization type 2111 is predominant, while, the 3333 is typical of industrial towns and cities. The first factor defines fatness, the second factor defines the anatomical distribution of fat (patterning). These two factors explain 72–73 per cent of the total variation of 10 measured folds. The most significant results have been achieved in predicting the amount of fat on the basis of the afore-listed factors in old women, while the poorest predictability has been found in male infants. It has been established that when the cheek-fold is thick, the folds at other sites of the body are not scanty in most cases, while the scanty fold on the trunk and the calf indicates the absence of the thickness on the cheek. When the adipose tissue is medium under the scapula or on the abdomen, it is not thick, in the majority of subjects, on the abdomen or under the scapula. When the subscapular tissue or those on the abdomen and the calf are thick, no scanty folds are found at other sites of the trunk and the leg. The correlation between the thickness of the adipose tissue at different sites of the body is more conspicuous in men than in women. The best «predictor» of fatness in male infants is the measurement on the abdomen or on the 10th rib, while in male subjects aged 3–90, it is the subscapular fold, or the 10th rib or the thigh. In female infants the best predictor is the adipose tissue on the abdomen, on the cheek and under the scapula, while in subjects aged 3–90 it is the 10th rib, the abdomen and the suprailiac fold. The measurements of the adipose tissue on the cheek and under the scapula are the best fat patterning «predictors».  相似文献

Present models of the relation between subcutaneous fat distribution and serum biochemistries have been based largely on U.S. White populations. To determine interpopulational differences in that relation, we measured 68 clinically normal adult Costa Ricans aged 17-32. Data collected included six skinfolds: triceps, subscapular, suprailiac, umbilical, anterior mid-thigh, and medial calf; height, weight, and four fasting serum parameters: glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Correlations between standardized skinfold ratios and biochemistries were highest--on the order of 0.40-0.50--for upper-lower body contrasts to triglyceride and cholesterol in males and to glucose and HDL in females. Canonical correlation analysis, with body mass index partialed out, found significant correlations for the first male variate and the first two female variates. The first male variate was positively weighted on subscapular fatness and on triglyceride and cholesterol, respectively. The two female skinfold variates were positively weighted on subscapular and on outer limbs, respectively, while their corresponding biochemical variates were weighted on glucose and triglyceride and on cholesterol and HDL, respectively. These findings are generally consistent with those based on U.S. populations but suggest that in non-Anglo populations, upper trunk fatness may be more relevant than anterior waist fatness to biochemical dysfunction.  相似文献

Synopsis The mating behavior and dentition ofUrolophus halleri, the round stingray was examined. Males frequently bite females during the mating period but most male biting does not result in copulation. In bites that do not lead to copulation, males bite the posterior (or occasionally the medial) portion of the females' disc but females often free themselves from these bites. In bites that precede copulation, males bite the anterior portion of the females' disc and females do not struggle to free themselves. Thus, females may exert some form of choice when they are bitten. Mature males have sexually dimorphic dentition that may aid in holding females. A principal component analysis (PCA) showed that in juvenile males, the relative size of the teeth decrease while the relative thickness of the disc increases as body size enlarges; adult males displayed no clear pattern. In adult females, there is a relative decrease in tooth size and increase in relative disc thickness as body size enlarges. The relative increase in females disc thickness in areas where they are bitten may function to minimize the amount of damage due to non-copulatory biting. There is no indication that biting functions to induce female receptivity but it may allow females and males to acquire information about potential mates. Thus, copulatory biting functions to maintain contact during copulation while the function of non-copulatory biting is less clear.  相似文献
