Summary

The albumen gland duct passes through the base of the albumen gland. It consists of a single layer of cells composed of ciliated and secretory cells. Sulfated and non-sulfated acid mucopolysaccharides are secreted by the cells of the albumen gland duct. Cell resembling neurosecretory cells are also found between the ciliated and secretory cells. The secretion products probably contribute to the formation of the albumen layer which surrounds the fertilized egg.  相似文献

Extracts of the atrial gland of the sea hare Aplysia californiea (Mollusca) induce egg laying when injected into mature individuals. Since egg laying is controlled endogenously by a peptide secreted by neuroendocrine cells in the central nervous system, the relationship between the atrial gland and these central neurons has become an issue of interest. With the particular objective of examining secretory structures we undertook an ultrastructural study of the atrial gland and adjacent tissues. This study revealed that the atrial gland epithelium is composed of two major cell types: ‘goblet-like’ exocrine cells containing large electron-dense granules, and ciliated ‘capping cells’. A non-secretory, and possibly post-secretory, cell containing electron-lucent granules was noted. A region of the large hermaphroditic duct contiguous to the atrial gland, known as the red hemiduct, also displayed capping cells and secretory cells with large granules. The content of these granules is organized into crista-like condensations. The cell also contains iron-rich pigment inclusions.  相似文献

Silk spinning is widely-spread in trombidiform mites, yet scarse information is available on the morphology of their silk glands. Thus this study describes the fine structure of the prosomal silk glands in a small parasitic mite, Ornithocheyletia sp. (Cheyletidae). These are paired acinous glands incorporated into the podocephalic system, as typical of the order. Combined secretion of the coxal and silk glands is released at the tip of the gnathosoma. Data obtained show Ornithocheyletia silk gland belonging to the class 3 arthropod exocrine gland. Each gland is composed of seven pyramidal secretory cells and one ring-folded intercalary cell, rich in microtubules. The fine structure of the secretory cells points to intensive protein synthesis resulted in the presence of abundant uniform secretory granules. Fibrous content of the granules is always subdivided into several zones of two electron densities. The granules periodically discharge into the acinar cavity by means of exocytosis. The intercalary cell extends from the base of the excretory duct and contributes the wall of the acinar cavity encircling the apical margins of the secretory cells. The distal apical surface of the intercalary cell is covered with a thin cuticle resembling that of the corresponding cells in some acarine and myriapod glands. Axon endings form regular synaptic structures on the body of the intercalary cell implying nerve regulation of the gland activity.  相似文献

The Harderian gland is a poorly understood anterior ocular gland that occurs in most terrestrial vertebrates. Numerous extraorbital functions have been ascribed to the Harderian gland, principally based on its association with the nasolacrimal duct. Few studies have centered on archosaurs and the majority of those available focused solely on the Harderian gland of birds. Little is known about the lacrimal apparatus of the crocodilians. We examined the lacrimal apparatus of several specimens of Alligator mississippiensis anatomically, histologically, and histochemically and studied the embryogenesis of this system. The nasolacrimal duct possesses a distal secretory area, which is more convoluted than that of typical mammals or lepidosaurs. The alligator Harderian gland possesses a unique combination of characteristics found in lepidosaurs, birds, and mammals. Like that of both mammals and lepidosaurs, it is a large, tuboloacinar gland that appears to secrete both mucoprotein and lipids. However, the presence of blood vessels and immune cells is reminiscent of that of the avian Harderian gland. The immunogenesis of the alligator Harderian gland appears to be tied to the development of the vascular system. The presence of a distinct palpebral gland in the anterior aspect of the ventral eyelid is a feature unique to alligators. Based on position, this gland does not appear to be homologous to the anterior lacrimal gland of lepidosaurs. Lymphatic aggregations were also found in the palpebral gland. The presence of interstitial immune cells in the orbital glands of alligators suggests that the alligator lacrimal apparatus, like that of birds, may play a role in the head-associated lymphatic tissue system.  相似文献

Summary The cement gland apparatus of newly hatched Pterophyllum scalare Cuv. & Val. was examined by histology, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The whole organ is composed of three pairs of endoepithelial, ductless glands, which cause prominent elevations on the larval head and are found in a specific arrangement. Each single gland is represented by an aggregation of elongated, tubular secretory cells surrounding a pyriform acinus. It overlies a basal lamina and is covered by the outer layer of the bilaminar embryonic epidermis. Two different types of secretory cells can be distinguished. One type is restricted to the bottom of the cavity. It is characterized by multiform cytoplasmic protrusions, which project into the gland's cavity. The secretory granules contain a network of light filamentous material. The second type constitutes the side wall of the acinus. It does not develop any protrusions. The contents of the secretory granules is of very high and homogeneous electron density. The mechanism of extrusion is discussed for both cell types. All secretory cells show a strong PAS-reaction. In SEM a circular microridge pattern with attached mucus globules can be recognized on the larval epithelial surface.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. H. Leonhardt on the occasion of his 60th birthday  相似文献

Summary Ultrastructural examination of milk secretory cells from lactating bovine mammary gland revealed presence of numerous microtubules in the apical and paranuclear cytoplasm, particularly in the vicinity of Golgi components. Most microtubules were oriented perpendicular to the apical plasma membrane and appeared to form a framework around Golgi dictyosomal elements and secretory vesicles. In comparison, non-secretory cells obtained from involuting glands displayed few microtubules and these were randomly located throughout the cytoplasm with no particular orientation.  相似文献

The spermathecal complex of the bark beetle, Ips typographus, comprises the following elements: spermathecal duct, spermatheca and spermathecal gland. The spermathecal duct connects the vagina and the spermatheca and consists of a cuticular tube surrounded by an epithelial layer and circular muscles. The spermatheca is bottle-shaped and has a cuticle-lined lumen. Muscles are attached to both ends of the spermatheca. The spermathecal gland which is connected to the spermatheca possesses three cell types: glandular, hypodermal, and ductule. The glandular cells have different structural characteristics depending on the age and reproductive state of the females. After the emergence of the brood, two different kinds of secretory material are present in the glandular cells. There is evidence that one type of secretion is emitted during the first few days after brood emergence, while the other type accumulates to be secreted during later stages.  相似文献

The albumen gland, a female accessory sex gland of pulmonate snails, produces the perivitelline fluid. The ultrastructure of the albumen glands of control and infected specimens of Lymnaea stagnalis and Biomphalaria glabrata was studied. The albumen gland of L. stagnalis contains two types of secretory cells--light (active) and dark (inactive)--and two types of supporting cells--centroacinar and myoepithelial. The secretory cells apparently represent two activity stages of one type of cell. The gland B. glabrata possesses only one secretory cell type, which alternates with one type of supporting cell. The albumen glands of L. stagnalis and B. glabrata infected at a juvenile stage were studied 4 and 14 weeks (L. stagnalis) and 4 and 9 weeks (B. glabrata) after exposure. After four weeks' infection, B. glabrata produced some egg masses, but in subsequent stages egg mass production completely coased. Infected L. stagnalis never produced eggs. B. glabrata was apparently infected at a "physiologically" more mature stage than L. stagnalis. The morphology of the albumen glands four weeks after exposure (the daughter sporocyst stage) is in agreement with this hypothesis. At this interval the secretory cells of L. stagnalis appeared to be much more severely affected (inactive Golgi bodies and rough endoplasmic reticulum, crinophagy of the secretory granules) than the cells of B. glabrata. In the later stages studied (shedding of the cercariae), the glands of both species appeared to be completely inactive (reduced height of the epithelium, inactive organelles, crinophagy, absence of secretory granules). At this stage of infection, daughter sporocysts containing cercaria embryos were seen in the connective tissue of the albumen gland of B. glabrata, but not of L. stagnalis. The results thus indicate that the development and synthetic activity of the albumen gland are seriously affected by infection. These processes are known to be under the endocrine control of the female gonadotrophic hormones. Since it has been established that these hormones are normally present in the haemolymph of infected snails, the findings can be explained by assuming that the parasite interferes in some way or other with the snail's endocrine system.  相似文献

Nassonow's gland consists of a number of cells with ducts that open on to the ventral surface of the brood canal in the cephalothoracic region of a neotenic female strepsipteran. The structural organization of the gland is reminiscent of the class 3 of the epidermal gland cells as defined by Noirot and Quennedey [Ann. Rev. Entomol. 19 (1974) 61], which consists of secretory and duct forming cells. The ultrastructure of the Nassonow's gland is described in female Xenos vesparum (Rossi) parasitic in the social wasp Polistes dominulus Christ. The large secretory cells are clustered in groups of three to four, rich in smooth endoplasmic reticulum and produce a secretion made up of lipids. In young females, just before mating, the ultrastructure of the cells and their inclusions indicate that they are active. In old-mated females the Nassonow's gland degenerates. Microvilli line an extracellular cavity and there are pores present in the irregularly thick cuticle of the efferent duct. The small duct forming cells, intermingle with epidermal cells, overlap secretory cells and produce a long efferent duct, the cuticle of which becomes thick close to its opening in the brood canal. Nassonow's gland could be the source of a sex pheromone, which might be capable of attracting the free-living male to a permanently endoparasitic female.  相似文献

The bilateral salivary glands, ducts, and nerves of the giant garden slug Limax maximus control the secretion of saliva and its transport to the buccal mass. Each salivary nerve, which originates at the buccal ganglion, contains over 3000 axon profiles. The axons innervate the musculature of the duct and branch within the gland. The salivary duct is composed of several muscular layers surrounding an epithelial layer which lines the duct lumen. The morphology of the duct epithelium indicates that it may function in ion or water balance. The salivary gland contains four major types of secretory cells. The secretory products are released from vacuoles in the gland cells, and are presumably transported by cilia in the collecting ducts of the gland into the larger muscular ducts.  相似文献

Caecilians are exceptional among the vertebrates in that males retain the Mullerian duct as a functional glandular structure. The Mullerian gland on each side is formed from a large number of tubular glands connecting to a central duct, which either connects to the urogenital duct or opens directly into the cloaca. The Mullerian gland is believed to secrete a substance to be added to the sperm during ejaculation. Thus, the Mullerian gland could function as a male accessory reproductive gland. Recently, we described the male Mullerian gland of Uraeotyphlus narayani using light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and histochemistry. The present TEM study reports that the secretory cells of both the tubular and basal portions of the tubular glands of the male Mullerian gland of this caecilian produce secretion granules in the same manner as do other glandular epithelial cells. The secretion granules are released in the form of structured granules into the lumen of the tubular glands, and such granules are traceable to the lumen of the central duct of the Mullerian gland. This is comparable to the situation prevailing in the epididymal epithelium of several reptiles. In the secretory cells of the basal portion of the tubular glands, mitochondria are intimately associated with fabrication of the secretion granules. The structural and functional organization of the epithelium of the basal portion of the tubular glands is complicated by the presence of basal cells. This study suggests the origin of the basal cells from peritubular tissue leukocytes. The study also indicates a role for the basal cells in acquiring secretion granules from the neighboring secretory cells and processing them into lipofuscin material in the context of regression of the Mullerian gland during the period of reproductive quiescence. In these respects the basal cells match those in the epithelial lining of the epididymis of amniotes.  相似文献

The albumen gland is a compound tubular exocrine gland found in the female reproductive tract of freshwater pulmonate snails such as Helisoma duryi. It secretes a perivitelline fluid, composed of protein and polysaccharide complexes, and coats each fertilized egg. A 288-kDa native glycoprotein, composed of several 66-kDa subunits, was identified in soluble extracts of albumen gland. Forskolin stimulates the release of secretory granules, containing both proteins and polysaccharides, from the cytoplasm of the glandular cells. An acid extract of the central nervous system or the adenosine-3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) analogue 8-bromo cAMP, stimulates protein secretion from the gland. Pretreatment of the albumen gland with cAMP antagonist (Rp isomer of cAMP) inhibits the stimulatory effect of a brain extract. Digestion of brain extract with proteolytic enzymes abolishes its activity, suggesting the factor from the brain is peptidergic. The neuroactive agents serotonin, Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-amide, Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-amide, small cardioactive peptide B, and caudodorsal cell hormone were also tested for potential secretion-promoting ability. Brain extracts were partially purified with a Sep-Pak C18 reverse-phase cartridge and indicate the peptide is relatively hydrophobic. These results suggest that a brain peptide promotes the secretion of perivitelline fluid, and this is mediated by the adenylate cyclase/cAMP signal transduction pathway. Runcina is a small hermaphroditic opisthobranch which possesses a monaulic reproductive system. In previous studies the male copulatory apparatus, the structure of the spermatophore and also the process of oogenesis have been described. The present paper gives an account of the ultrastructure of the female genital glands of the oviduct. In Runcina the oviduct comprises three primary regions, the albumen gland, the egg capsule gland and the mucous gland. Eggs enter the fertilization chamber and as they pass the opening of the albumen gland they become surrounded by albumen or perivitelline fluid. The eggs appear to become encapsulated as they traverse the egg-capsule gland and are eventually stuck together by mucus to form an egg mass. The epithelial lining of the three glands consists of alternating ciliated and secretory cells. The characteristics in secretory products of the glandular cells are described, and are discussed with reference to the way they contribute to egg vestment.  相似文献

The fine structure of the intersegmental glands of the sixth abdominal sternum in 1-week old females of Nomia melanderi is presented. The plasma membrane of the secretory cell is unfolded in many places and is covered by a basement membrane. The microvillous surface is invaginated to form a rather long sinuous cavity. The endoplasm is almost entirely filled by secretory granules. Many secretory granules are located close to the inner surface of the invaginated plasma membrane. The invagination contains a porous ductule, apparently of cuticulin origin, that is connected directly with the inner layer of the transport duct of the duct-forming cell. This type of arrangement allows the direct flow of the secretory substance to the outside in a continuous way. The cylindrical duct-forming cell, besides having typical cell organelles, contains a cuticular transport duct. This duct is composed of a thin cuticulin layer surrounded by a rather thick epicuticular one. The results suggest that the secretory cell has two secretory cycles. The first occurs while the gland is differentiating (at the pupal stage) and is involved in secretion of the cuticulin that forms the porous ductule. The second cycle, which starts by the beginning of nesting, is involved in the secretion of a substance that is carried to the outside via the transport duct of the duct-forming cell.  相似文献

This study reports the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of the male Mullerian gland of the caecilian Uraeotyphlus narayani, based on dissections, light microscopic histological and histochemical preparations, and transmission electron microscopic observations. The posterior end of the Mullerian duct and the urinogenital duct of this caecilian join to form a common duct before opening into the cloaca. The boundary of the entire gland has a pleuroperitoneum, followed by smooth muscle fibers and connective tissue. The Mullerian gland is composed of numerous individual tubular glands separated from each other by connective tissue. Each gland has a duct, which joins the central Mullerian duct. The ducts of the tubular glands are also surrounded by abundant connective tissue. The tubular glands differ between the column and the base in regard to the outer boundary and the epithelial organization. The basement membrane of the column is so thick that amoeboid cells may not penetrate it, whereas that around the base of the gland is thin and appears to allow migration of amoeboid cells into and out of the basal aspect of the gland. The epithelium of the column has nonciliated secretory cells with basal nuclei and ciliated nonsecretory cells with apical nuclei. In the epithelium of the base there are secretory cells, ciliated cells, and amoeboid cells. The epithelium of ducts of the tubular glands is formed of ciliated dark cells and microvillated light cells. The epithelium of the central duct is formed of ciliated dark cells also possessing microvilli, ciliated light cells also possessing microvilli, and microvillated light cells that lack cilia. It is regressed during March to June when the testis lobes are in a state of quiescence. The Mullerian gland is active in secretion during July to February when the testis is active in spermatogenesis.  相似文献
