Analyses were carried out for diatoms, spherical carbonaceous particles, and magnetic minerals on a short sediment core from a small cirque lake, Lake Nicholls, in the Mount Field National Park, south-west Tasmania.Catchment disturbance is not evident from the fairly constant sediment accumulation rates and magnetic analyses of the sediment record. However, there is evidence for a low level of atmospheric contamination during the industrial period, which reaches a maximum at the present time, but is less than in many areas of north-west Europe. Changes in the diatom assemblages recorded in the sediment core are likely to be related to factors, other than catchment change or atmospheric contamination, such as the response of within lake processes to climate change.Several diatom taxa found in the cores cannot presently be assigned to known species. Although some of these may later be identified following this preliminary study, it seems highly likely that freshwater lakes in south-west Tasmania contain a number of new and perhaps endemic taxa.  相似文献

Sediment cores were taken from near maximum depth in 15 Florida lakes representing a wide range of trophic conditions. Chemical analyses of surface sediments showed Al, Fe, and Ca to be the most abundant elements in all samples, and the ratio of Al to Ca to be smaller for eutrophic lakes. Sediment organic matter increased with trophic state, as did the degree to which it was enriched in nitrogen. Corresponding sediment C/N ratios decreased with increasing lake trophic state and showed significant negative correlation with chlorophylla, total N, and total P in the water column. Concentrations of sedimentary chlorophyll derivatives showed some relation to trophic state but differences in basin morphometry hinder its use as an inter-lake index of chlorophyll production.  相似文献

1. Until recently, the distribution of diatom species assemblages and their attributes (e.g. species richness and evenness) in relation to water depth have been identified but not quantified, especially across several lakes in a region. Here, we examined diatom assemblages in the surface sediment across a water‐depth gradient in eight small, boreal lakes in north‐western Ontario, minimally disturbed by human activities. 2. Surface‐sediment diatom assemblages were collected within each lake along a gentle slope from near‐shore to the centre deep basin of the lake, at a resolution of ~1 m water depth. Analysis of sedimentary samples provided an integrated view of assemblages that were living in the lake over several years and enabled a high‐resolution analysis of many lakes. The study lakes ranged in water chemistry, morphology and size and are located along an east–west transect approximately 250 km long in north‐western Ontario (Canada). 3. The majority of diatom species were distributed along a continuum of depth, with those taxa having similar habitat requirements forming distinct, though overlapping, assemblages. Three major zones of diatom assemblages in each lake were consistently identified: (i) a near‐shore assemblage of Achnanthes (sensu lato), Nitzschia, Cymbella (sensu lato) and other benthic species; (ii) a mid‐depth assemblage of small Fragilaria (sensu lato)/small Aulacoseira and various Navicula taxa; and (iii) a deep‐water assemblage of planktonic origin (mainly Discotella spp.). 4. The depth of the transition between assemblage zones varied between the eight lakes. The boundary between the deep‐water planktonic zone and the mid‐depth benthic zone varied according to water chemistry and was probably related to light attenuation. The boundary was deeper in lakes with the lower dissolved organic carbon and total phosphorus (TP) (i.e. less light attenuation) and vice versa. 5. Generally, species richness, species evenness and turnover rate of species as a function of depth were significantly lower in the planktonic assemblage zone in comparison with the two zones nearer the shore. Reproducibility of species and assemblage distributions across the depth gradient of the lakes illustrated that, despite potential for sediment transport, detailed ecological characterisation of diatom species can be gleaned from sedimentary data. Such data are often lacking, particularly for near‐shore benthic species.  相似文献

Nutrient uptake and benthic regeneration in Danube Delta Lakes   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
We investigated the nutrient uptake capacity of three lakes (Uzlina, Matita and Rosu) within the Danube Delta during high water level in June and low water level in September 1999. Special emphasis was placed on nutrient cycling at the sediment-water interface and on the self-purification capacity of the lakes in the Danube Delta. In order to estimate the nutrient uptake of selected lakes we present in this paper the results of water analyses, benthic flux chamber experiments and deck incubation experiments of 15N-labeled sediment cores at the inflow and the outlet of the lakes. The external input of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silica into the lakes decreases with increasing distance to the main Danube branches whereas the total dissolved phosphorus input is independent of the hydrological distance to the main branches. The nutrient loading is highest in the inflow channels, and decreases towards the outflow of the lakes. In June, the uptake of NO3 , TDP and Si(OH)4 in the lakes was higher than in September. In contrast, NH4 + uptake was more intense in September, when benthic release was more intense as well. On average, about 76% of the external plus internal nitrogen and phosphorus input into the lakes was taken up by macrophytes and phytoplankton during the growing season, whereas the uptake of external nutrient input amounted to about 43%. The benthic release of ammonia and silica increases from June to September and indicates, that part of the nutrients taken up during the growing season might be released during winter. We estimate the net impact of the Delta on the nutrient reduction of the Danube during the growing season is about 4.3%, assuming 10% of the Danube water is flowing through the Delta.  相似文献

Multi‐decadal to centennial‐scale shifts in effective moisture over the past two millennia are inferred from sedimentary records from six lakes spanning a ~250 km region in northwest Ontario. This is the first regional application of a technique developed to reconstruct drought from drainage lakes (open lakes with surface outlets). This regional network of proxy drought records is based on individual within‐lake calibration models developed using diatom assemblages collected from surface sediments across a water‐depth gradient. Analysis of diatom assemblages from sediment cores collected close to the near‐shore ecological boundary between benthic and planktonic diatom taxa indicated this boundary shifted over time in all lakes. These shifts are largely dependent on climate‐driven influences, and can provide a sensitive record of past drought. Our lake‐sediment records indicate two periods of synchronous signals, suggesting a common large‐scale climate forcing. The first is a period of prolonged aridity during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA, c. 900‐1400 CE). Documentation of aridity across this region expands the known spatial extent of the MCA megadrought into a region that historically has not experienced extreme droughts such as those in central and western north America. The second synchronous period is the recent signal of the past ~100 years, which indicates a change to higher effective moisture that may be related to anthropogenic forcing on climate. This approach has the potential to fill regional gaps, where many previous paleo‐lake depth methods (based on deeper centrally located cores) were relatively insensitive. By filling regional gaps, a better understanding of past spatial patterns in drought can be used to assess the sensitivity and realism of climate model projections of future climate change. This type of data is especially important for validating high spatial resolution, regional climate models.  相似文献

Diatom concentrations in surface sediments are positively correlated with limnetic chlorophyll a concentrations in Florida (USA) lakes. Using this relationship, I examine models that provide quantitative inferences for trophic state in historical applications.The best model predicts chlorophyll a trophic state index (TSI) values from log-transformed diatom concentrations and explains approximately half the variance in the dependent variable. Diatom accumulation rates are not better than sedimentary diatom concentrations as predictors of TSI. The entire diatom assemblage is as sensitive an indicator of TSI as are the planktonic diatoms alone. A model that considers the ecological preferences of specific taxa was found to be a better predictor than the model based on total diatom concentration.The sedimentary diatom concentration model provides a useful method for assessing historical changes in primary productivity, except in lakes where factors (e.g., silica limitation, blue-green bacterial inhibition) limited diatom production, or post-depositional changes removed sedimentary diatoms. TSI inferences are presented for sediment cores from two Florida lakes, one of which demonstrates a problematic application, and the other of which does not.  相似文献

Climate warming and major land-use changes have profoundly affected the Mongolian landscape in the past several decades. Previous studies have recognized the impacts of a warmer, more arid climate and Mongolia’s 1991 transition from a command to a market economy on terrestrial ecosystems, including impaired sustainability of subsistence herding and threats to wild animals. In this study, we examined the combined effects of changing climate and herding practices on lake eutrophication in Western Mongolia. We sampled 65 lakes for modern nutrients and found the majority of lakes were eutrophic to hyper-eutrophic. Sediment cores were taken from five of the lakes to compare current lake status to paleolimnologial measures of lake eutrophication over the past 100–2000 years, including changes in diatom assemblages, diatom-inferred total phosphorus, biogenic silica, organic matter, and sediment accumulation rates. Variance partitioning analysis showed that recent shifts in diatom assemblages were related to changes in both climate and herding practices. The results presented here demonstrate a need for further study and long-term monitoring of water quality in Mongolia to understand the complicated interactions of climate and land use on aquatic resources and to preserve water quality in this remote and ecologically important region.  相似文献

In the region northeast of Wawa, Ontario (Canada), many circumneutral lakes downwind of a nearby iron-sintering plant were strongly acidified (pH 3–4) in response to the emissions of large amounts of sulfur dioxide from 1939–1998. Following closure of the plant in 1998, lakewater pH has returned to circumneutral conditions due to the high buffering capacity of the local geological substrate. Prior paleolimnological analyses of dated sediment cores have detected some biological recovery among algal communities (diatoms and chrysophytes), although they have not returned to their pre-impact assemblages. Here we take a broader ecosystem approach, and build upon the algal analyses by examining cladoceran sedimentary assemblages, and spectrally-inferred chlorophyll a and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from the same dated sediment cores. Similar to the algal communities, recent cladoceran sedimentary assemblages from three impacted lakes remain in an altered state relative to the pre-impact period (for example, increased relative abundances of Chydorus brevilabris and reduced cladoceran density in sediments). However, trends in the spectrally-inferred chlorophyll a and DOC were mixed, with long-term decreases in the study lake closest to the plant and long-term increases within the other lakes. Collectively, the multi-proxy paleolimnological analyses of these markedly acidified lakes demonstrate the delayed biological recovery from acidification (and differences in timing) across multiple trophic levels, despite the near-elimination of acid deposition almost a decade previously, which led to a striking recovery in lakewater pH and increased food availability.  相似文献

The relationship between diatom (Bacillariophyceae) taxa preserved in surface lake sediments and measured limnological and environmental variables in 22 lakes near Yellowknife (N.W.T.) was explored using multivariate statistical methods. The study sites are distributed along a latitudinal gradient that includes a strong vegetational gradient of boreal forests in the south to arctic tundra conditions in the north. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) revealed that lakewater concentrations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) each accounted for independent and statistically significant proportions of variation in the distribution of diatom taxa. Weighted-averaging (WA) models were developed to infer DIC and DOC from the relative abundances of the 76 most common diatom taxa. These models can now be used to infer past DIC and DOC concentrations from diatom assemblages preserved in sediment cores of lakes in the Yellowknife area, which may provide quantitative estimates of changes in lakewater chemistry related to past vegetational shifts at treeline.  相似文献

Diatoms are potentially the most important biomonitors of environmental change in high arctic lakes and ponds, but to date few autecological data are available. Because of the shallow nature of many of these water bodies, a large proportion of taxa are periphytic and planktonic diatoms are absent for the most part. By determining the microhabitat and substrate preferences of these benthic diatom taxa, the potential exists to infer past changes in available habitats from fossil diatom assemblages collected from sediment cores and ultimately to reconstruct past environmental and climatic changes responsible for these shifts in habitat availability. To refine our understanding of high arctic diatom habitat preference, the common diatom taxa found on submerged moss (bryophyte), sediment, and rock substrates from lakes and ponds on Bathurst Island, Nunavut, Canadian High Arctic were examined. The relationships among key limnological variables and the common taxa from each habitat were examined. Many diatom taxa exhibited varying degrees of microhabitat preference, with moss representing the more unique habitat. In addition, the following limnological variables significantly ( P ≤ 0.05) explained the species variance for each of the three substrates: Na + and total nitrogen for moss; total phosphorus (filtered) and pH for rock; and Fe3 + , total phosphorus (unfiltered), total nitrogen, temperature, and pH for sediment. These data can be used to help interpret monitoring and paleolimnological studies in this environmentally sensitive region.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Comparisons of pre- and post-settlement diatom assemblages from the sediment of twenty-five Minnesota lakes reveals that Stephanodiscus hantzschii percentages are more consistent indicators of human disturbance than the Araphidineae/Centrales (A/C) index. In a set of eighty surface sediment samples from lakes whose water chemistry is known, S. hantzschii , a centric diatom, is abundant as a microfossil in lakes with total phosphorus > 15 μg I−1 and alkalinity > 1.5 m-equiv. I−1. High Araphidineae/Centrales indices are characteristic of lakes with only moderate total phosphorus levels and very low alkalinities.  相似文献

The spatial (i.e. microhabitat) and temporal (i.e. seasonal) characteristics of diatom assemblages in adjacent High Arctic lakes were studied intensively June–August 2004. These baseline data are used to improve understanding of modern diatom community dynamics, as well to inform paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Diatoms were collected approximately weekly through the melt season from each principal benthic substrate (moss/macrophyte, rock scrapes, littoral sediment), plankton, and sediment traps, and were compared to the uppermost 0.5 cm of a surface core obtained from the deepest part of the lake where sediment cores are routinely collected. Water samples were collected concurrently with diatom samples to investigate species–environment relationships. The lakes share approximately half of their common taxa, the most abundant overall in both lakes being small Cyclotella species. Results of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) indicate that the largest gradient in species turnover existed between benthic and planktonic communities in both lakes, and that sediment trap and the surface core top samples most closely resemble the planktonic assemblage, with an additional contribution from the lotic environment. Our results indicate clear micro-spatial controls on species assemblages and a degree of disconnection between the benthos and deep lake sediments that manifests as an under-representation of benthic taxa in deep lake surface sediments. These findings are particularly relevant in the context of interpreting the paleoenvironmental record and assessing ecosystem sensitivity to continued climate change.  相似文献

The species composition of surface sediment diatom assemblages in 33 Galloway lakes, pH range c. 4.5 to 7.4, is related in a statistically significant manner to water acidity (or to factors closely associated with pH). Predictive models of summer mean pH, using simple regression equations of Index B (Renberg & Hellberg, 1982) with both Scandinavian and Galloway data sets, and multiple regression equations using diatom pH preference groups and individual species, are described and applied to fossil diatoms in six sediment cores. Although multiple regression of individual species gives the highest correlation coefficient (r2=0.87) in the modern data set this method is least appropriate for reconstructing pH values from fossil material where predictor species are often absent. Of the four methods examined here it is suggested that multiple regression of diatom preference groups is probably the most suitable for pH reconstructions from sediment cores.  相似文献

Water quality degradation is a serious concern for the St. Lawrence River. While some environmental data are available for the St. Lawrence ecosystem, long-term monitoring data are generally lacking. To infer past environmental changes, we undertook a paleolimnological assessment of diatom assemblages preserved in four 210Pb- and 137Cs-dated sediment cores from two fluvial lakes in the river, and used diatom transfer functions to infer past shoreline habitat characteristics. At sites in Lake Saint-François, a fluvial lake downstream from Cornwall, water quality decreased this century in response to human impacts (e.g. macrophyte density and nutrient levels increased). These trends were apparent from an increase in epiphytic diatom taxa, followed by an increase in eutrophic planktonic taxa. Water quality, however, appears to have improved somewhat in response to rehabilitation measures during the last two decades. From a sediment core near Montréal (Lake Saint-Louis), we also noted a large proportion of eutrophic and epiphytic taxa, but less evidence was recorded of a recent improvement in water quality. The diatom-based inference model for habitat characteristics appeared to reconstruct environmental conditions in the St. Lawrence River during the last century. The most notable shift has been an increase in diatom taxa commonly associated with macrophyte substrates. Trends in some of the planktonic diatoms were similar to those recorded in paleolimnological investigations from Lake Ontario, but cores from the river also may be reflecting local environments. This study shows that diatom-based paleolimnological studies are possible in large river systems, if coring sites (e.g. fluvial lakes) are carefully selected.  相似文献

Submerged macrophytes are a central component of lake ecosystems; however, little is known regarding their long‐term response to environmental change. We have examined the potential of diatoms as indicators of past macrophyte biomass. We first sampled periphyton to determine whether habitat was a predictor of diatom assemblage. We then sampled 41 lakes in Quebec, Canada, to evaluate whether whole‐lake submerged macrophyte biomass (BiomEpiV) influenced surface sediment diatom assemblages. A multivariate regression tree (MRT) was used to construct a semiquantitative model to reconstruct past macrophyte biomass. We determined that periphytic diatom assemblages on macrophytes were significantly different from those on wood and rocks (ANOSIM R = 0.63, P < 0.01). A redundancy analysis (RDA) of the 41‐lake data set identified BiomEpiV as a significant (P < 0.05) variable in structuring sedimentary diatom assemblages. The MRT analysis classified the lakes into three groups. These groups were (A) high‐macrophyte, nutrient‐limited lakes (BiomEpiV ≥525 μg · L?1; total phosphorus [TP] <35 μg · L?1; 23 lakes); (B) low‐macrophyte, nutrient‐limited lakes (BiomEpiV <525 μg · L?1; TP <35 μg · L?1; 12 lakes); and (C) eutrophic lakes (TP ≥35 μg · L?1; six lakes). A semiquantitative model correctly predicted the MRT group of the lake 71% of the time (P < 0.001). These results suggest that submerged macrophytes have a significant influence on diatom community structure and that sedimentary diatom assemblages can be used to infer past macrophyte abundance.  相似文献

We assess the recovery of UK lakes from acidification using the combined data from sediment cores and sediment traps to track changes in diatom assemblages in 11 UK upland lakes from pre-acidification times (prior to ca. 1850 AD) to the present (2008 AD). We projected the data into a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of diatom assemblage data from 121 low-alkalinity lakes in the UK to show how the floristic composition of the core and trap diatom assemblages for each site has changed through time. The results show that the degree of recovery from acidification varies amongst sites but in all cases its extent is limited when compared with the pre-acidification reference. In most cases the recovery, although usually slight, is characterised by a decline in acid tolerant taxa and a return towards taxa that occurred previously at each respective site. In a few cases, however, the floristic composition of recent samples is different from those that occurred during and before the acidification phase. The reasons for this are not yet clear but it is possible that nutrient enrichment from atmospheric N deposition and/or climate change is beginning to play a role in driving water quality as acidity decreases. More generally the results show that annually recovered samples from sediment traps can be successfully combined with sediment core data to provide a continuous record of environmental change in lake systems, and that diatoms collected in sediment traps can be used to provide a very powerful lake monitoring tool.  相似文献

The surface sediment diatom analysis of 28 Algoma lakes (pH 4.40–8.13) indicates that even though each lake has a widely different aquatic environment and characteristic diatom assemblage, a definite relationship exists between the lake water pH and their diatom assemblages. In the acidic lakes acidobiontic and acidophilous diatom species predominate whereas in circumneutral and alkaline lakes circumneutral and alkaliphilous diatoms were most common. Cluster analysis of the pH indicator diatom assemblages grouped the study lakes into three distinct cluster groups. These groups also closely corresponded to lake water pH. On the basis of published ecological information as well as their presence in our study lakes, the pH indicator status of a number of diatom taxa have been discussed. A detailed listing of the diatom taxa identified and their pH indicator status is provided in order to facilitate their use in future diatom-inferred pH studies.  相似文献

Interpreting sedimentary phosphorus profiles in terms of changes in the historical P load is difficult due to variable retention and post-depositional diagenesis. An alternative approach is to use diatom assemblages in surface sediments and derive a transfer function for epilimnetic SRP and total P concentrations using weighted average regression and calibration. The obtained relationship can then be applied to down-core changes in sedimentary diatom assemblages and diatom-inferred P (DI-P) used to assess historical changes in epilimnetic P-concentrations. A diatom-phosphorus calibration data set for 43 eutrophic lakes in Northern Ireland has been constructed and applied to two small eutrophic lakes (Lough Mann, White Lough). DI-total P (i.e. predicted) is highly correlated with observed TP (r 2 = 0.75) for the surface-sediment training data-set. The resultant changes in DI-P derived from application of the transfer function to down-core changes in diatom assemblages are compared to sedimentary P concentrations. The latter are highly variable, presumably due to redox-derived effects, while DI-P profiles are more readily interpretable, and agree with other stratigraphic records of lake eutrophication. The method offers a good possibility of defining pre-disturbance (i.e. natural) phosphorus concentrations in lakes with associated implications for lake-restoration programmes.  相似文献

Diatom analyses of sediment cores extracted from three lakes in coastal southeastern South Australia reveal that, for most of the mid-late Holocene, they were shallow, brackish to saline systems with limited flow of water from continental sources. The construction of a substantial network of drains in the early years of settlement, to maximise transportation and agricultural production through wet winters, lead to abrupt freshening of the lakes. Interestingly, despite substantial nutrient loads to Lake Bonney SE (there are two Lakes Bonney and Frome in South Australia, which is why the lakes in the southeast of the state are differentiated with ‘SE’) associated with the commissioning and expansion of pulp and paper mills, a wastewater treatment plant discharge and agricultural runoff, there is only moderate evidence of nutrient enrichment in the lake, possibly because the post-impact assemblages are dominated by taxa with broad ecological preferences. Despite being preserved within a conservation park, eutrophication associated with agriculture is evident in the diatom assemblages of Lake Frome SE, which has a catchment more than twice that of Lake Bonney SE. Mullins Swamp, on the other hand, supports few indicators of eutrophic conditions. The freshening of these lakes is against the tide of salinisation from rising saline groundwaters in most wetlands across southeastern Australia.  相似文献
