Summary Species of the cosmopolitan ant genus Monomorium are small, slow-moving and non-aggressive ants that are extremely successful members of diverse Australian ant communities. Unlike other abundant taxa, they have no obvious specializations enabling them to co-exist with the highly aggressive species of Iridomyrmex that dominate these communities. Here we report results which suggest that Monomorium species owe their success to the topical application of venom alkaloids which repel other ants. The venom alkaloids (trans-2-ethyl-5-undecylpyrrolidine and trans-2-ethyl-5-tridecylpyrrolidine) of Monomorium rothsteini were identified and synthesized, and the repellency to other ants of the synthetic alkaloids were tested using bioassays involving the attraction to honey baits of three native species of Iridomyrmex, three tropical tramp species, and M. rothsteini itself. Repellency to all other ant species was total or nearly so, but only partial to M. rothsteini. Defensive alkaloids produced from a variety of glands are found in other ant genera, and may be a potent yet poorly appreciated force in interference competition between ant species and thereby the structure of ant communities.  相似文献

Euphorbia characias is a Mediterranean spurge with a diplochorous dispersal system: after a ballistic dispersal that scatters the seeds, some ant species find and retrieve the seeds to their nest (myrmecochorous dispersal). The seed dispersal curve generated by ants in an abandoned field was described and partitioned according to ant size and to the distance to nest entrance from where seeds fell after ballistic dispersal. Both variables (ant size, distance to nest) affected dispersal distance. The seed dispersal curve showed a peak at short distance (median=1m) and a tail extending to 9.4m. The peak and the tail are explained differently. Short distances are usually generated by small ants (Pheidole pallidula and Tapinoma nigerrimum; 0.56±0.41m [n=48]) both from the nearest or farther nest entrances. The tail of the curve is generated disproportionately by big ants (Aphaenogaster senilis and Messor barbarus; 2.09±1.71m [n=61]) from farther nests. Seeds have a much greater probability (P=0.734) of being transported to nests which are not the nearest. This effect is largely due to transportation by big ants.  相似文献

Somatic embryo formation was induced from cotyledon explants of Styrian pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L. subsp. pepo var. styriaca Greb.) by using a solid MS medium supplemented with 16.11M NAA and 4.44M BA or 26.85M NAA and 13.32M BA. The callus proliferation was more efficient on medium supplemented with 26.85M NAA and 13.32M BA. In contrast, the embryogenic response was higher on medium with lower concentrations of growth regulators (16.11M NAA and 4.44M BA). The time needed for embryo induction did not depend on medium composition. Embryos in globular stage were transferred to three different maturation media, containing 2.89M GA3 in combination with 0.54M NAA, 11.42M IAA and growth regulator-free medium. The germination rate was the highest when embryos were cultured on medium with 11.42M IAA. Plantlets grown on this medium achieved maturity suitable for transplantation into soil within 9 to 10weeks. The regenerated plants were successfully transferred into field and developed fertile flowers and set fruits. Biochemical analysis showed significant lower total glutathione levels among in vitro grown plantlets compared to seedlings grown in soil. When the plantlets were transferred into soil, they reached a normal size within a month and the glutathione concentration was comparable to seed-derived plants at the same developmental stage. Transmission electron microscopy was used to investigate possible differences in the ultrastructure of cells from callus cultures, and leaf cells of regenerated and seed-derived plants. Differences in the ultrastructure were found within chloroplasts which contained only single thylakoids, large starch grains and small plastoglobuli in callus cells in comparison to leaf cells, which possessed a well developed thylakoid system, small starch grains and large plastoglobuli.  相似文献

A -amylase (EC 3.2.1.2) was identified in the outer pericarp (P) of developing seeds of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and compared with the well known -amylase which is synthesized during seed development in the starchy endosperm (E). The enzyme P already exists in the tissues before anthesis and vanishes at the time when E starts to accumulate. The isoelectric-focusing patterns of P and E are very similar. The relative molecular weight (Mr) of P is slightly higher than that of E (66 and 64.5 kDa, respectively). Both P and E exhibit common epitopes in addition to epitopes specific for each of them. The two enzymes were identified in small amounts in the green tissues of the developing seeds (inner pericarp and testa). Natural abundance of 15N in tropical plants with emphasis on tree legumes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Natural abundance of 15N ( 15N) of leaves harvested from tropical plants in Brazil and Thailand was analyzed. The 15N values of non-N2-fixing trees in Brazil were +4.5±1.9, which is lower than those of soil nitrogen (+8.0±2.2). In contrast, mimosa and kudzu had very low 15N values (–1.4+0.5). The 15N values of Panicum maximum and leguminous trees, except Leucaena leucocephala, were similar to those of non-N2-fixing trees, suggesting that the contribution of fixed N in these plants is negligible. The 15N values of non-N2-fixing trees in Thailand were +4.9±2.0. Leucaena leucocephala, Sesbania grandiflora, Casuarina spp. and Cycas spp. had low 15N values, close to the value of atmospheric N2 (0), pointing to a major contribution of N2 fixation in these plants. Cassia spp. and Tamarindus indica had high 15N values, which confirms that these species are non-nodulating legumes. The 15N values of Acacia spp. and Gliricidia sepium and other potentially nodulating tree legumes were, on average, slightly lower than those of non-N2-fixing trees, indicating a small contribution of N2 fixation in these legumes.  相似文献

We have used restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and DNA sequencing to characterize two distinct DRB1 alleles expressed on DRw52 and DQw7-associated haplotypes but not readily defined by conventional DR serology. These two haplotypes, designated HLA-D HAG and PEV, react variably with DRw13(w6), DRw14(w6), and the more broad DR 3+6 antisera. Analysis of RFLP revealed that HLA-D HAG and PEV are associated with different DRw52 variants, and that HAG is indistinguishable from DRw18(3) haplotypes. Sequencing of the HAG and PEV DRB1 genes showed each to represent novel alleles. Nevertheless, these sequences show similarities with the other alleles of the DR5, w6, and w8 family. HAG (DRB1*1303) appears to have arisen either from two recombinational events involving at least three DRB1 sequences (DRB1*1101, DRB1*0803, DRB1*0401) or from a single recombinational event together with multiple point mutational events. PEV appears to represent a DRB1*1301-1302/DRB1*1101 recombinant allele, with recombination having occured in the region of bases 175 – 198. The results of this study suggest that the DRw52 family haplotypes is derived from a relatively restricted number of ancestral sequences, with diversity among DRB1 alleles within this family arising through gene conversion or recombination events.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of the combined use of sizofiran, a-1,3-glucan and a recombinant interferon- (rIFN-) upon biological activities of peritoneal macrophages (M). The number of peritoneal M and the production of cytokines (interleukin-1, interferon- and tumor necrosis factor) was increased by the combined treatment. Fully activated peritoneal M based on the increased number of elongated pseudopods were observed by electromicroscope. Sizofiran seems to assure a sufficient supply of M to kill tumor cells in the peritoneal cavity and co-administered rIFN- seems to directly stimulate the accumulated M in addition to its direct cytotoxicity against tumor cells. An adaptation model having two stages is introduced and its mathematical properties are examined. The two stages are the adaptive process (parameter K b), which has bleaching-type kinetics, and the response function (parameters K r and n), which incorporates response saturation. In order to study the increment threshold functions generated by the adaptation model the concept of a detector is required. It is demonstrated that without an adaptive process the compression hypothesis, in the form of the difference equation, produces increment threshold functions which saturate and do not obey Weber's law. It is then shown that an adaptive process with bleaching-type kinetics can prevent saturation and produce Weber's law behavior provided that the adaptive strength of the system exceeds the detector sensitivity.  相似文献

Controlled digestion of 150 kD single chain botulinum type E neurotoxin with pepsin atpH 6.0 produced 112, 48, 46, and 16 kD fragments. These were chromatographically purified; their locations in the 1300 amino acid residue long neurotoxin were determined by identifying the amino terminal 10 residues of 112 and 48 kD fragments, 50 residues of 46 kD fragment, and 59 residues of 16 kD fragment. The 48 and 112 kD fragments contain the N-terminal segment of the neurotoxin (i.e., residue no. 1 to 425 and 1 to 990, respectively), the 46 kD fragment corresponds to 407 residues of the C-terminal region, and the 16 kD fragment contains the 140 residues from a segment nearer to the C-terminus. The 48 kD fragment is similar to the 50 kD N-terminal light chain of the 150 kD dichain neurotoxin, which is generated by tryptic cleavage of the 150 kD single chain neurotoxin, and is separated from the 100 kD C-terminal heavy chain by dithiothreitol (DTT) reduction of an intrachain disulfide bond in the presence of 2 M urea (Sathyamoorthy and DasGupta,J. Biol. Chem. 260, 10461, 1985). The pepsin-generated 48 kD fragment, unlike the light chain, was isolated without exposure to DTT and urea. The single chain 112 kD fragment following trypsin digestion yielded 48 and 60 kD fragments that were separable after DTT reduction of the intrachain disulfide which links them. The N-terminal residues of the smaller fragment were identical to that of the single chain 150 kD neurotoxin; the single chain 112 kD fragment is therefore the neurotoxin minus the 50 kD C-terminal half of the heavy chain. The biological activities of the 48 and 112 kD fragments can be demonstrated in permeabilized PC12 cells (Lomnethet al., J. Neurochem. 57, 1413, 1991); they inhibit norepinephrine release.  相似文献

Summary The -glucuronidase staining characteristics of isolated T cell populations and the T and T enriched fractions derived of them were studied. T lymphocytes were obtained from purified T lymphocytes by ox-IgG rosette sedimentation. The rosette-forming cells in the pellet were referred to as T lymphocytes, whereas the lymphocytes in the interface were referred to as T depleted or T lymphocytes. B cells were studied on rosetted mononuclear cells with either mouse erythrocytes or with Staphylococcus Aureus (Cowan I) bacteria, after a preceeding polyvalent anti-human Ig treatment of the cells. While B cells showed mostly no reactivity, T and T cells were respectively characterised by a dot-like and granular pattern of reactivity. These findings are in agreement with those observed by others after -naphthyl-acetate esterase or acid phosphatase staining. Within the T lymphocyte fraction, the T non-, non lymphocytes seemed to have a granular pattern of reactivity. The same staining pattern was found in non-B, non-T lymphocytes.  相似文献

Summary The ontogenesis of cells containing polypeptide hormones (ACTH, MSH, LPH, GH and Prolactin) was investigated in the fetal rat hypophysis by immunohistochemistry using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex.Corticotrophs, melanotrophs and lipotropic cells were revealed earlier in the pars distalis than in the pars intermedia. In the pars distalis, cells producing LPH were found in the morning of day 15 of gestation using anti-- or anti--LPH sera, and in the afternoon using anti-- or -endorphin sera. Cells containing -MSH were observed from the afternoon of day 15. The cells stainable with the anti--MSH, anti--(17-39)ACTH and anti--(l-24)ACTH sera appeared on day 16. In the pars intermedia, the cells producing -MSH, MSH, - and -endorphin, and -LPH were observed in the morning of day 17, while cells containing ACTH were only revealed in the afternoon of the same day of gestation. Based on the treatment of serial paraffin sections with various antisera, it was clearly shown that MSH, ACTH, and LPH occur in the same cells located in the pars distalis as in the pars intermedia.The development of the corticotrophs, melanotrophs and lipotropic cells does not require the presence of the fetal hypothalamus or other central nervous structures. The pituitary glands of 21 day-old fetuses encephalectomized on day 16 showed as many reactive cells as those of the littermate controls.The somatotrophs were first revealed in the pars distalis in the afternoon of day 19. The cells producing prolactin were not observed before day 21 of gestation. On some cases GH and prolactin were found together in one cell. The cytodifferentiation of GH and prolactin cells is apparently not under hypothalamic control.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the stochastic modelling of a spatially structured biological population subject to social interaction. The biological motivation comes from the analysis of field experiments on a species of ants which exhibits a clear tendency to aggregate, still avoiding overcrowding. The model we propose here provides an explanation of this experimental behavior in terms of long-ranged aggregation and short-ranged repulsion mechanisms among individuals, in addition to an individual random dispersal described by a Brownian motion. Further, based on a law of large numbers, we discuss the convergence, for large N, of a system of stochastic differential equations describing the evolution of N individuals (Lagrangian approach) to a deterministic integro-differential equation describing the evolution of the mean-field spatial density of the population (Eulerian approach).  相似文献

Of 49 microbial strains screened for their capabilities to transform ginsenoside Rb1, Rhizopus stolonifer and Curvularia lunata produced four key metabolites: 3-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl-(1,2)--d-glucopyranosyl]- 20-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl]-3,12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (1), 3-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl-(1,2)--d- glucopyranosyl]-20-O-[-d-glucopyranosyl]-3,12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ol (2), 3-O-[-d-gluco- pyranosyl-(1,2)--d-glucopyranosyl]-3, 12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (3), and 3-O--d-glucopyranosyl-3, 12, 20(S)-trihydroxydammar-24-ene (4), identified by TOF-MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectral data. Fowl plague virus, strain Dutch, was metabolically labeled withd-[2-3H]mannose, or withd-[6-3H]glucosamine, and the small subunit (HA2; 0.8 mg in total) of the viral hemagglutinin was isolated by preparative sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. After proteolytic digestion, the radioactive oligosaccharides were sequentially liberated from the glycopeptides by treatment with different endo--N-acetylglucosaminidases and with peptide:N-glycosidase or, finally, by hydrazinolysis. In this manner, four groups of glycans could be obtained by consecutive gel filtrations and were subfractionated by HPLC. The structures of the individual oligosaccharides were analyzed by micromethylation, by acetolysis or by digestion with exoglycosidases. Two sets of backcross matings were performed to test for linkage between genes coding for the Ia-like antigens (Ia) and the B erythrocyte antigens (Ea-B) of the chicken. Evidence is presented which indicates that the la antigens are determined by a single codominant locus and that theEa-B and Ia loci are on the same chromosome. Failure to detect a single recombinant between theEa-B and Ia loci out of 208 progeny suggests close linkage of the two genes with a map distance of up to about 2 centimorgans. The Ia genes are thus included in theB major histocompatibility complex of the chicken.  相似文献

Summary Eimeria cyclopei n.sp. is described from the silky anteater, Cyclopes didactylus, from Pará State, north Brazil. Undifferentiated oocysts, passed in the faeces, complete sporulation in seven days at 26 to 28°C. Oocysts are ellipsoidal to sub-spherical, with a mean size of 28.1 × 23.6 m: the wall is 1.5 to 2.0 m thick, apparently with an outer thin, colourless membrane and two inner, thicker, striated and yellowish layers. There is no micropyle, oocyst residuum or polar body. The mean measurements of sporocysts are 19.0 × 9.0 m, and they are slightly asymmetrical, elongate pear-shape, with a plug-shaped Steida body projecting beyond the end of the sporocyst. Sporozoites are as long as or longer than the sporocysts: The sporocyst residuum is scattered between sporozoites in younger specimens and becomes condensed into rounded mass in older ones. The endogenous stages occur in the epithelial cells of the ileum, on the lumenal side of the host-cell nucleus. Uninucleate meront, microgamont and macrogamont precursors are recognizable morphologically. Mature meronts are 20.0 × 15.7 m some produce 12 to 20 merozoites which are 8.7 × 2.0 m, and others 10 to 26 merozoites which are 11.4 × 2.0 to 15.0 × 3.0 m. Mature microgamonts which are 27.5 × 24.1 m, produce from 150 to 170 microgametes of 7.1 × 1.0 m: microgametes have two flagella of unequal length. Mature macrogamonts are 28.4 × 24.5 m Eimeria choloepi n.sp. is recorded from the two-toed sloth, Choloepus didactylus, from the same area of Brazil. Undifferentiated oocysts, passed in the faeces, complete sporulation in 23 days at 26 to 28°C. Oocysts with a mean size of 23.0 × 20.3 m, have a wall 2.0 to 2.5 m thick which is composed of two thick, yellowish and striated outer layers and a delicate, colourless inner one. There is no micropyle, oocyst residuum or polar granule. Mature sporocysts with a mean size of 11.3 × 7.1 m, are ellipsoidal to egg-shaped and have a poorly developed Steida body. The sporocyst residuum is composed of a small number of large globules: The sporozoites are longer than the sporocyst and strongly recurved. The endogenous stages occur in epithelial cells of the ileum, on the lumenal side of the host-cell nucleus. Dimorphic meronts produce 8 to 18 merozoites which are either 13.0 × 2.0 m or 13.0 × 3.0 m. Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is particularly sensitive to decline in clayey soils presenting a high-perched temporary water table. These soils induce two successive constraints in one-year cycle: water excess (and hypoxy) in winter and early spring, and water shortage in summer (water stress being more restrictive to oak). We determined the porosity and water properties of temporarily waterlogged clayey soils supporting forest stands of decliningQuercus robur trees in a 101yr-old oak stand in Belgium (50°06N, 4°16E). Roots unevenly colonized the soil down to 1.6m: fine roots (diameter<5mm) were mostly distributed on the surface horizons (0–0.3 m) and around 1.3m deep, despite dense clayey horizons appearing at 0.35m depth. Clay content below this depth reached 46–51. Illite and vermiculite were the dominant clay minerals. The clayey horizons exhibited marked shrink–swell properties: bulk density at 30kPa increased from 1.41 to 1.88gcm–3 from the surface to 2m depth. There was also evidence of hypoxic conditions caused by water saturation of pore space in the rooting zone from October to mid-April. Extractable water (EW), calculated between moisture tensions of 5 and 1600kPa was 152.8mm. The level of perched temporary water table strongly depended on the seasonal rhythm of water uptake by trees and on the shrink–swell behaviour of soil.  相似文献

Summary Mountain birch trees are said to survive as green islands around nests of red ants in Finnish Lapland because the ants kill larvae which would defoliate trees during outbreaks of the moth O. autumnata. An alternative hypothesis says that because the ants will concentrate soil nutrients (and possibly ameliorate soil moisture and temperature) in and around their nests, they provide a more favourable site for trees growing nearby. These trees are therefore less stressed and a poorer source of food for defoliators at times of outbreaks. Few if any young O. autumnata larvae survive on the trees which then survive in green islands around ant nests.  相似文献

American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius L., is one of the most heavily traded medicinal plants in North America. The effect of harvest on genetic diversity in ginseng was measured with a single generation culling simulation program. Culling scenarios included random harvest at varying levels, legal limit random harvest and legal limit mature plant harvest. The legal limit was determined by the proportion of legally harvestable plants per population (% mature plants per population). Random harvest at varying levels resulted in significant loss of genetic diversity, especially allelic richness. Relative to initial levels, average within-population genetic diversity (H e) was significantly lower when plants were culled randomly at the legal limit (Mann–Whitney U=430, p<0.001) or when only mature plants were culled (Mann–Whitney U=394, p<0.01). Within-population genetic diversity was significantly higher with legal limit mature plant harvest (H e=0.068) than when plants were culled randomly at the legal limit (H e=0.064; U=202, p<0.01). Based on these simulations of harvest over one generation, we recommend that harvesting fewer than the proportion of mature plants could reduce the negative genetic effects of harvest on ginseng populations.  相似文献
