Platanthera leucophaea, the Eastern Prairie Fringed-orchid, is a globally imperilled species native to the USA and Canada, with its Canadian distribution limited to the Province of Ontario. In Canada, where P. leucophaea is listed as endangered, approximately 40 % of populations have been extirpated in recent years, and many remaining populations have experienced substantial declines. In this study, we investigated whether reduced population sizes have led to low genetic diversity and inbreeding. We also investigated the extent to which hybridization with Platanthera psycodes may be threatening the genetic integrity of P. leucophaea populations. We found that overall, genetic diversity is low, and inbreeding is high. This is despite evidence of regular gene flow between proximate populations, although more distant populations show high levels of genetic differentiation. At sites where P. leucophaea is sympatric with P. psycodes, interspecific hybridization occurs in a bidirectional manner, i.e. with both parental species acting as either pollen donor or pollen recipient. Inbreeding and low genetic diversity in all populations, and hybridization in some populations, may pose future threats to P. leucophaea, and should be considered in the future by biodiversity managers.  相似文献

Field observations showed that three South African orchid species,Satyrium carneum, S. coriifolium andS. princeps, are pollinated by sunbirds. Foraging sunbirds insert their bills into the labellum chamber of the flowers and suck nectar from the labellum spurs with their tongues. The column overarches the entrance to the labellum and pollinaria become affixed to the upper mandible of the bill. Birds often attempt to remove pollinaria by rubbing their bills against a branch, but are mostly unsuccessful due to the large plate-like viscidia which attach the pollinaria very firmly to the bill. Other modifications for bird pollination in theseSatyrium species may include the red, carmine or orange colour of the flowers, sturdy inflorescence stems used for perching and large amounts of dilute nectar in the spurs. EachSatyrium species was pollinated by several species of sunbird, and despite some differences in flowering time, occasional hybrids occur at a site whereS. carneum andS. coriifolium share the same sunbird pollinators.  相似文献

Nigerian species ofPortulaca: P. grandiflora Hooker,P. oleracea L. andP. quadrifida L. combine inbreeding, outbreeding and vegetative propagation in the wild and in the oultivation. Observations have shown that the anthers ofPortulaca species dehisces before the flower bud opens, and are usually ripe at the time the stigmas are receptive. This enhances self-fertilization.  相似文献

The paper deals with some of the contributions made from India by various research workers towards our knowledge of the fungus genusPhytophthora de Bary, in the fields of morphology, disease production, occurrence and distribution of species, host range, physiology, taxonomy and control measures. Out of the total of fifteen species and five varieties ofPhytophthora reported from India, five species (viz.,P. arecae, P. palmivora, P. colocasiae, P. parasitica andP. infestans, and four varieties ofP. parasitica, viz.,P. parasitica var.macrospora, var.sesami, var.piperina and var.nicotianae) assume considerable parasitic roles inciting serious diseases like seedling-blights, wilts, cottoney-leaks, foot-rots, blights, budrot and rots of fruits, nuts, tubers and corms etc. They are widely distributed in various parts of this country, and are mostly prevalent in rainy seasons.Phytophthora palmivora, andP. parasitica were found to have a wide host range.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The extreme complexity of asclepiad flowers (Asclepiadoideae–Apocynaceae) has generated particular interest in the pollination biology of this group of plants especially in the mechanisms involved in the pollination processes. This study compares two South American species, Morrenia odorata and Morrenia brachystephana, with respect to morphology and anatomy of flower structures, dynamic aspects of the pollination mechanism, diversity of visitors and effectiveness of pollinators.

Methods

Floral structure was studied with fresh and fixed flowers following classical techniques. The pollination mechanism was studied by visiting fresh flowers in the laboratory with artificial pollinator body parts created with an eyelash. Morphometric and nectar measurements were also taken. Pollen transfer efficiency in the flowers was calculated by recording the frequency of removed and inserted pollinia. Visitor activity was recorded in the field, and floral visitors were captured for subsequent analysis of pollen loads. Finally, pollinator effectiveness was calculated with an index.

Key Results

The detailed structure of the flowers revealed a complex system of guide rails and chambers precisely arranged in order to achieve effective pollinaria transport. Morrenia odorata is functionally specialized for wasp pollination, and M. brachystephana for wasp and bee pollination. Pollinators transport chains of pollinaria adhered to their mouthparts.

Conclusions

Morrenia odorata and M. brachystephana present differences in the morphology and size of their corona, gynostegium and pollinaria, which explain the differences in details of the functioning of the general pollination mechanism. Pollination is performed by different groups of highly effective pollinators. Morrenia species are specialized for pollination mainly by several species of wasps, a specialized pollination which has been poorly studied. In particular, pompilid wasps are reported as important pollinators in other regions outside South Africa. A putative new function of nectar in asclepiads is presented, as it would be contributing to the pollination mechanism.  相似文献

Interactions between flowers and their visitors span the spectrum from mutualism to antagonism. The literature is rich in studies focusing on mutualism, but nectar robbery has mostly been investigated using phytocentric approaches focused on only a few plant species. To fill this gap, we studied the interactions between a nectar-robbing hermit hummingbird, Phaethornis ruber, and the array of flowers it visits. First, based on a literature review of the interactions involving  P. ruber, we characterized the association of floral larceny to floral phenotype. We then experimentally examined the effects of nectar robbing on nectar standing crop and number of visits of the pollinators to the flowers of Canna paniculata. Finally, we asked whether the incorporation of illegitimate interactions into the analysis affects plant–hummingbird network structure. We identified 97 plant species visited by P. ruber and found that P. ruber engaged in floral larceny in almost 30 % of these species. Nectar robbery was especially common in flowers with longer corolla. In terms of the effect on C. paniculata, the depletion of nectar due to robbery by P. ruber was associated with decreased visitation rates of legitimate pollinators. At the community level, the inclusion of the illegitimate visits of P. ruber resulted in modifications of how modules within the network were organized, notably giving rise to a new module consisting of P. ruber and mostly robbed flowers. However, although illegitimate visits constituted approximately 9 % of all interactions in the network, changes in nestedness, modularity, and network-level specialization were minor. Our results indicate that although a flower robber may have a strong effect on the pollination of a particular plant species, the inclusion of its illegitimate interactions has limited capacity to change overall network structure.  相似文献

Prasophyllum odoratum is a vernal, nectariferous, terrestrial orchid that flowers profusely six to eight months following cyclical fires that disrupt sclerophyll woodlands. The morphology of the column and pollinarium is indicative of taxa placed within the subfam.Spiranthoideae. The orientation of the pollinaria to the stigma appears to prevent mechanical self-pollination. Both cross- and self-pollination appear to be effected by insects that forage within the brightly-colored, scented, non-resupinate flowers. Ants and drosophilid flies remove nectar, but do not appear to transport pollinaria between flowers. The primary pollinators are polytrophic flies in the fam.Syrphidae and opportunistic male bees in the genusLeioproctus (Colletidae). Approximately 52% of the flowers on a raceme set seed. The comparatively short floral tube ofP. odoratum reflects the dependence of this species on short-tongued insects to effect successful dispersal of pollinaria.  相似文献

Three species of lepidopterous larvae were collected fromAmaranthus hybridus L. growing in field corn during 1975 and 1976 at Hastings, Florida.Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) was the predominant species in May.Spodoptera eridania (Cramer) was predominant in June andHerpetogramma bipunctalis (F.) in July and August. Nine native species of parasites, representing theBraconidae, Eulophidae, Ichneumonidae andTachinidae, emerged from these larvae.Meteorus autographae Muesebeck emerged from bothS. exigua andS. eridania. TheTachinidae, Winthemia rufopicta (Bigot),Eucelatori rubentis (Coquillett) andLespensia sp., emerged from mixtures ofS. exigua andS. eridania. Apanteles marginiventris (Cresson),Temelucha sp., andChelonus texanus Cresson emerged from bothS. exigua andH. bipunctalis larvae, andEuplectrus platyhypenae Howard andOphion sp. emerged fromS. eridania. All the species of parasites from the lepidopterous larvae that feed onAmaranthus hybridus are also reported as parasites ofS. frugiperda, a serious pest of corn. Therefore these larvae onA. hybridus may be a source of the parasites found attackingS. frugiperda.  相似文献

Glycoproteins of 11Sporothrix species were purified from their respective culture filtrates by use of DEAE-Sephadex A-50 and QAE-Sephadex A-25 column chromatography and investigated for their chemical and immunological properties. On the basis of sugar composition, the glycoproteins of the 11Sporothrix species could be divided into two groups, i.e., rhamnose containing (i.e., Rha+), and non rhamnose containing (i.e., Rha?) groups. The species in the former group wereS. curviconia, S. inflata, S. schenckii andS. schenckii var. luriei, and those in the latter group wereS. cyanescens, S. foliorum, S. fungorum, S. ghanensis, S. imectorum, S. luteoalba andS. ramosissima. The glycoproteins of four of the (Rha+) species were relatively similar in elution patterns of DEAE-Sephadex A-50 chromatograms, sugar and amino acid compositions, serological reactivity with rabbit andS. schenckii serum and rabbit antiKlebsiella pneumoniae K47 serum, and cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity. In the case of the (Rha?) species, the glycoproteins of five species cross-reacted with rabbit antiS. schenckii serum and all, but theS. cyanescens, glycoprotein were reactive to some degree in skin tests in sporotrichotic patients. These results strongly suggest that the chemical and immunological properties of these glycoproteins correspond with the morphological observations amongSporothrix species.  相似文献

Chaptalia dentata (L.) Cass. andC. albicans (Sw.) Vent. ex Steudel incorrectly have been recognized as conspecific in recent treatments. Although they are vegetatively similar, they differ in features of the flowers and fruits—especially the mature achenes. Both species occur in the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles of the West Indies:Chaptalia dentata is endemic to that area, absent only from Jamaica;C. albicans is more widespread, as it occurs in Jamaica as well as in scattered localities on the American mainland—southern Florida, various localities in Belize, Honduras, and Guatemala, and the Mexican states of Veracruz, San Luis Potosí, Chiapas, and Yucatán.  相似文献

InCallithrix, Saguinus, Aotus, andCallicebus other group members than the mother participate in infant care. Differences among these species are obvious in respect to the time of being off any caregiver, and in respect to the carrying position (Aotus andCallicebus). Alloparental care, a basic behaviour pattern in these species, has evolved from the parking behaviour of the prosimians. The infants are «parked» at other group members.  相似文献

Management of semi-natural grasslands should be based on the requirements of plants as well as their pollinators since conditions beneficial for plants are not necessarily beneficial for their pollinators and vice versa. The factors affecting the reproductive success (fruit set) of Platanthera bifolia and Platanthera chlorantha and their pollinators in agricultural landscape and woodlands were studied. In the years 2014–2016, we observed and caught moths during the flowering period of Platanthera species (late June–mid July) in four pure P. bifolia, five pure P. chlorantha and nine mixed populations under management or no management in Estonia. We determined pollinator species richness, pollinator abundance, fruit set and visibility of Platanthera plants in each population. We found that pollinator assemblages of P. bifolia and P. chlorantha did not differ between managed and unmanaged sites. Pollinator abundance had an effect on the fruit set of P. bifolia but not on that of P. chlorantha. Presence or absence of management, visibility of plants and rarefied pollinator species richness did not affect the fruit set of either plant species. Pollinator abundance was significantly higher in unmanaged populations of both plant species but rarefied pollinator species richness was higher only in unmanaged populations of P. chlorantha. Based on our findings the recommendations for management of semi-natural grasslands are to promote larger landscape diversity for the benefit of moth abundance by leaving unmanaged patches in different parts of a grassland in different years and rotational and post-fruiting management for higher reproductive success of orchids.  相似文献

Limnanthes floccosa Howell is a variable autogamous species of recent origin. The phenetic relationships of a large number of populations ofL. floccosa were studied using taximetric techniques. Five subspecies are recognized inL. floccosa on the basis of the taximetric results.Limnanthes floccosa ssp.californica andL. floccosa ssp.grandiflora are described as new, andL. floccosa ssp.pumila andL. floccosa ssp.bellingeriana are proposed as new combinations. Aspects of autogamy responsible for the highly discrete pattern of variation inL. floccosa are discussed.  相似文献

Hummingbird pollination is documented for a natural population ofStenorrhynchos lanceolatus Aublet. L. C. Rich. occurring in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. At the study site the plants are pollinated byPhaethornis eurynome (Phaethorninae),Thalurania glaucopis (females only) andLeucochloris albicollis (Trochilinae). The plants offer nectar as a reward and the pollinaria become stuck to the surface of the hummingbird's bill while it is probing the flowers. The orchid population received a few (0–4) hummingbird visits per day, with about 83% of the flowers being pollinated. In spite of the low frequency of visits, the granular structure of the pollinarium plus the behaviour of the most frequent pollinators, which tend to visit all the fresh-looking flowers of each inflorescence, a very high fruiting success was promoted. Experimental evidence suggests that the pollinaria may remain up to 6.30 hours on the hummingbird's bill, enhancing the chances of cross-pollination and long-distance pollen flow.  相似文献
