A unique group of immunoglobulin-binding proteins (IGBPs), produced by ixodid male ticks during the latter half of their prolonged feeding period, improves the feeding performance of co-feeding females. As a follow-up to this observation, we investigated whether male tick feeding also affects the feeding of other developmental stages. Immature stages of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreeille) and Amblyomma americanum (L.) were fed on rabbits in the presence or absence of conspecific males. The mean weight of larvae and nymphs of both species that fed around males and detached from the host on the first day of dropping was significantly higher than when the immature ticks fed on rabbits in the absence of males. However, larvae of both species and nymphs of R. sanguineus that fed slower and detached on the second day of dropping did not show significant differences in weight. A similar pattern was observed for A. americanum nymphs although, unlike R. sanguineus, the presence of males also influenced the feeding performance of the nymphs that fed slowly and detached on the second day of drop-off. The improved feeding performance demonstrated by immature ticks in the presence of males may be due to immunomodulatory saliva proteins, such as immunoglobulin-binding proteins (IGBPs) that are introduced into the co-feeding site. The results are considered in relation to the distribution of ixodid tick species on their natural hosts.  相似文献

Predation was measured in the laboratory by Dicyphus hesperus females on patches of greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) pupae. The patches contained different proportions of unparasitized pupae and those parastisized as nymphs by Encarsia formosa. Dicyphus hesperus fed readily on parasitized pupae and the number of parasitized pupae consumed increased with the proportion available indicating a capacity for intraguild predation. However, D. hesperus females did not display a preference for feeding on parasitized pupae versus unparasitized pupae. Dicyphus hesperus adults were released at three densities into greenhouse enclosures containing tomato plants harbouring greenhouse whitefly and immature E. formosa. Numbers of killed and parasitized whitefly nymphs and pupae and the total number of healthy whitefly were compared among Dicyphus density treatments. On upper leaves, the amount of predation on whitefly nymphs was higher at the highest predator density than at the lower density or in enclosures where D. hesperus was not released. On lower leaves, the number of parasitized pupae was lowest with the highest predator density indicating a negative effect of intraguild predation by D. hesperus on E. formosa. Despite this, Dicyphus density did not affect the density of whitefly in the presence of E. formosa. The results are discussed as they relate to concurrent use of D. hesperus and E. formosa for regulation of greenhouse whitefly populations.  相似文献

We examined the influence of sex steroids on cardiac effects of sympathetic agents in mice. The mice were divided into four groups: males, neutered males (N-males), females, and neutered females (N-females). Dobutamine (DOB; 2.5, 5.0, 10 microg/kg/min) or isoproterenol (ISO; 0.01, 0.02, 0.04 microg/kg/min) were given intravenously to compare the fractional shortening (FS). These mice received isoproterenol twice daily at a dose of 7.5 microg/g/day for 3 weeks. The rate of cardiac fibrosis was evaluated pathologically with Azan stain after 3 weeks of ISO. DOB and ISO significantly increased the FS in the male group, compared with other groups. There was no significant difference in FS between the female and N-female groups. Cardiac fibrosis significantly increased in the male group, compared with the N-male group. The female and N-female groups had increased cardiac fibrosis, compared with the male and N-male groups. These findings suggest that testosterone is one of the factors of modulation of the response to the sympathetic nervous system. Further study is needed to clarify the relationships between female sex steroids and cardiac fibrosis.  相似文献

Performance of nymphs and adults of the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feeding on immature fruits of radish,Raphanus raphanistrum L. (Brassicaceae) was poor compared with feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods, but a change from radish to soybean from nymph to adult alleviated some of the detrimental effects of this food on adult performance. Over 50% of nymphs died on radish, while only 15% died on soybean. To complete nymph development (stadia 2 through 5), male and female nymphs required 9.5 and 13.3 days longer on radish compared to soybean. Fresh body weight of 1-d-old adult females and males was ≅65% greater for those reared as nymphs on soybean than on radish, with females being significantly heavier than males on both foods. Survivorship and longevity of females, however, was greater for those fed on radish as nymphs and as adults, as compared to those that fed on soybean or radish followed by soybean. Males lived longer when fed exclusively on soybean. In general, reproductive performance and percentage gain in adult body weight was greatest for insects fed on soybean only, and were better for those whose food was switched from nymph to adult, as compared to those insects fed on radish solely.  相似文献

Although Amblyomma brasiliense Aragão 1908 has been reported as one of the most aggressive ticks to humans in Brazil, information about the biology of this tick species is virtually inexistent. This work reports data on the life cycle of A. brasiliense fed on rabbits and pigs and maintained in an incubator at 20°C, 90% RH and 12 h of light for off-host development. Tick yield of adult females fed on pigs and rabbits was 81.2% and 58.3%, respectively. Females fed on pigs had mean engorgement weight of 862.3 mg and egg mass of 208 mg, while females fed on rabbits had mean engorgement weight of 606.1 mg and egg mass of 160 mg; these values did not differ statistically between host species. Feeding period of female ticks fed on pigs (10 days) was significantly shorter than that on rabbits (17 days). Mean preoviposition period was slightly longer (35.9 days) for ticks fed on pigs than on rabbits (30 days). The minimum incubation period of eggs of ticks from both host species was similar and over 100 days. Egg production efficiency was low for females fed on both hosts (less than 30% and 20% for ticks from pigs and rabbits, respectively). More than 55% of larvae and 79% of nymphs fed on rabbits, set free inside the feeding chambers, engorged successfully. These ticks attained an engorgement weight of 1.3 and 18.2 mg, respectively, and fed for approximately 5 days. The minimum pre-molt period was 30 days for engorged larvae and over 44 days for nymphs. Molting success was low, less than 50% in the case of larvae and less than 20% for nymphs. Further studies are required to better determine the off-host requirements of this tick species.  相似文献

When parasitoid females encounter a host, they can either lay an egg and thus invest in current reproduction or feed on the host and thus invest in future reproduction. However, hosts could have different values according to their parasitized status. Whereas already parasitized hosts represent poor quality for egg-laying, they could have a high nutritive value for feeding. Moreover, the optimal strategy adopted generally depends on the females’ physiological state. In this study, the impact of the females’ physiological state on their reproductive strategies was investigated in the solitary parasitoid Anisopteromalus calandrae. We analysed how their age and diet influenced (i) the use of hosts (feeding vs. oviposition) and (ii) host selection (previously parasitized vs. unparasitized). Our results show that both age and diet influence the reproductive strategy of A. calandrae females: old females fed with the poorer diet laid fewer eggs and made more host-feeding than others. Females also showed a preference for already parasitized hosts for feeding. This strategy cannot be explained by the nutritive value of haemolymph, as parasitized hosts carry fewer lipids. However, as parasitized hosts are also paralyzed, it could be less costly to feed on them than on unparasitized hosts.  相似文献

The population density of host-searching nymphal and adult lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae), was determined at the Robinson tract of the Kansas Ecological Reserves and a private farm 5 km north-west of the Robinson tract using standard drag cloth methods. Nymphs, males and females were counted and collected weekly from shaded habitats and adjacent sunlit habitats from mid-May through late July, 2003. Of the 1598 nymphs and 549 males collected by drag sampling, 74.0% and 72.1%, respectively, were collected from shaded sections of the habitats, whereas 77.3% of 472 females were found in sunlit sections. A. americanum collected during each sampling period were maintained unfed at >95% relative humidity and a 14 : 10 h photoperiod, and survival was recorded weekly until all ticks had died. Survival of nymphs, males and females did not differ between ticks collected in the shade vs. those collected in the sun. Nymphs survived significantly longer than adults, whereas male and female survival did not differ from each other. These results suggest that host-searching A. americanum populations may partition their environment to increase the chances of coming into contact with a potential vertebrate host.  相似文献

The parasitic wasp Eretmocerus mundus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), a natural enemy of the silverleaf whitefly Bemisia argentifolii (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), deposits eggs beneath nymphs and not within them. Experiments were designed to establish whether ovipositing E. mundus females leave marking chemicals on nymphs to enable searching females to discriminate parasitized from unparasitized hosts. Cuticular lipids from three experimental treatment groups were characterized: parasitoid-exposed nymphs that had a parasitoid egg between the nymph and leaf; control nymphs not exposed to E. mundus; and a third treatment condition of parasitized nymphs, held for 10 days after wasp exposure. Lipids were solvent-extracted from the nymphal cuticles of the various treatment groups and the lipid components were characterized and quantified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Results indicated the presence of quantities of C31 and C33 dimethylalkanes only from parasitoid-exposed groups of nymphs and not in the extracts from control nymphs or the parasitized nymphs after 10-day exposure. Furthermore, the C31 and C33 dimethylalkanes were shown to be major lipid components of the hexane extracts from E. mundus females. Since the lipids were removed from parasitoid-exposed nymphs before interaction with hatched parasitoid larvae, the findings indicated that the dimethylalkanes were transferred onto nymphal cuticles by ovipositing E. mundus females.  相似文献

Rabbits infested with different stages ofAmblyomma variegatum Fabricius, 1794 became resistant to subsequent infestations by the same tick. Resistance was manifested by a reduction of 73.6% in the mean engorged weight of female ticks by the 3rd infestation. By the 5th infestation, only 70% of the nymphs engorged and their mean engorged weight was 57.7% of that of nymphs fed on tick-naive control rabbits. In the case of larvae, there was a 22.8% reduction in their mean engorged weight by the 6th infestation. Based on increases in body length while feeding on tick-naive rabbits, the nymphs could be divided into four feeding categories, i.e. Nl (unfed), N2, N3 and N4 (increasing states of engorgement). While 92–96% of ticks which dropped from susceptible rabbits fitted into feeding category N4, only 28% of those that dropped from tick-resistant rabbits fitted into that category. The remainder of the ticks fitted into categories N3 (60%) and N2 (12%). The majority of those ticks with reduced weight developed into adults which had an atypical scutal ornamentation pattern, in that an additional pair of lateral spots was regularly observed on the males. The females of such ticks deposited small numbers of eggs from which no larvae hatched.  相似文献

A colony ofAmblyomma parvum was started with engorged females collected from cattle in the Province of Salta (25°01 S, 63°56 W), Argentina. The progeny of those ticks were fed on rabbits and the non-parasitic stages maintained at 27±1°C, 83–86% RH in darkness. The life cycle (prefeeding period not evaluated) had a mean duration of 99.6 days. The mean time (days) for the different phases of the cycle were as follows: feeding period of females, 8.0; pre-oviposition period, 5.7; oviposition period, 17.5; minimum incubation period of the eggs, 31.8; feeding period of larvae, 3.2; premoult period to nymphs, 10.9; feeding period of nymphs, 4.7; premoult period to adults, 17.8. The oviposition pattern was typical of an ixodid tick, including a linear relationship between weights of engorged females and the number of eggs laid (r=0.8659). The males increased 18% in weight after feeding on hosts (P<0.01). The mean recovery rates of larvae, nymphs and females were 28.2%, 95.3% and 90.7%, respectively. The nymphs moulting to females were heavier (6.8±0.69 mg) than those moulting to males (3.2±0.29 mg) (P<0.01). Data from a 3-year study of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaiusphoeniceus) were used to test the hypothesis that parasites(in this case, haematozoa) reduce male fitness and cause diminishedexpression of secondary sexual traits, which, in turn, are usedby females to select parasite-free males as mates. There wasno evidence indicating a fitness cost to being parasitized becauseparasitized males were as likely as unparasitized males to acquirea territory and to survive from one year to the next. Similarly,parasitized and unparasitized females did not differ with regardto how early they started nesting, how many eggs they laid,or their year-to-year survival. Secondary sexual traits, particularlyintrasexual aggression, did reliably (>80%) reveal the parasitestatus of males. Plumage and morphological traits also alloweddiscrimination of parasitized and unparasitized females. However,apparent mating patterns were unrelated to either the males'or the females' parasite status. Only if genetic analyses revealthat unparasitized males actually realize higher productivesuccess will these results potentially provide support for theparasite hypothesis of sexual selection.  相似文献

Infestations by larval and nymphal stages were performed on guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus), chickens (Gallus gallus), rats (Rattus norvegicus), rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), wild mice (Calomys callosus), dogs (Canis familiaris) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Infestations by adult ticks were performed on dogs, capybaras and rabbits. Tick developmental periods were observed in an incubator at 27 degrees C and RH 90%. Guinea pigs were the most suitable hosts for larvae and nymphs, followed by chickens. The remaining host species were less suitable for immature ticks as fewer engorged ticks were recovered from them. Mean larval feeding periods varied from 3.8 to 4.7 d between different host species. Mean larval premolt periods ranged from 8.9 to 10.4 d. Nymphal mean feeding periods varied from 4.2 to 6.2 d for ticks fed on different host species. Premolt period of male nymphs (mean: 15.4 d) was significantly longer than that of female nymphs (14.7 d). Female nymphs were significantly heavier than male nymphs. The overall sex ratio of the adult ticks emerged from nymphs was 0.9:1 (M:F). Capybaras were the most suitable host for the tick adult stage as significantly more engorged females were recovered from them and these females were significantly heavier than those recovered from dogs or rabbits. The life cycle of A. triste in laboratory could be completed in an average period of 155 d. The potential role of guinea pigs, birds and capybaras, as hosts for A. triste in nature, is discussed.  相似文献

Parasite‐mediated models of sexual selection predict that females should avoid parasitized mates, thereby generating selection on male traits revealing health. The strength of this selection, however, may depend on the prevalence of parasitism among females if their infection status alters their mate preferences. We evaluated the effects of a socially transmitted parasite on male traits and female behaviour in spadefoot toads. Parasitized males were larger and in better condition than unparasitized males. Moreover, better condition males produced longer calls. Unparasitized females preferred longer calls indicative of good‐condition males that are more likely parasitized. By contrast, parasitized females as a group possessed no preference for call duration. Presumably because of reduced selection by these parasitized females, male mating success was not associated with any measured traits. Thus, when females are parasitized, sexual selection on condition‐dependent traits is potentially reduced.  相似文献

Host-seeking Ixodes ricinus (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) were monitored for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.) using dark-field microscopy in South Moravia (Czech Republic) each May from 1991 to 2001 (150 nymphs, 100 females and 100 males each year). This survey revealed a mean annual percentage of infected ticks of 16.8% (range, 11.7-24.2) in nymphs, 24.9% (range, 16.5-33.6) in females and 26.1% (range, 17.1-37.3) in males. Annual incidence of Lyme borreliosis in humans of the area in the same period (range, 8.7-41.7 per 100,000) correlated significantly with the frequency (number of ticks per flag per hour) of nymphs infected with >50 borreliae or all nymphal ticks, but not with the frequency of females, infected females or the infection rate (% of ticks infected) of either nymphal or female ticks. A prediction of the annual incidence of Lyme borreliosis, based on the frequency of heavily infected or all nymphal I. ricinus ticks, is feasible. The infection rate in I. ricinus correlated significantly with the North Atlantic Oscillation winter index of the last year (in nymphs) or of the year before last (in adults).  相似文献

We investigated the hypothesis that the common cuckoo Cuculus canorus selects host pairs of good phenotypic quality. As there is some evidence that cuckoos may select hosts within a population non-randomly based on external cues reflecting their foster abilities, we predicted that great reed warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus pairs parasitized by the cuckoo would exhibit higher quality than unparasitized ones. To test this assumption, we evaluated two different parameters indicating host quality: body condition and characteristics of host eggs. We found that parasitized females showed significantly better body condition than unparasitized ones, and the model showed that the probability of being parasitized by the cuckoos increased with increasing body condition. Moreover, the likelihood of being parasitized by a cuckoo within the great reed warbler population increased with decreasing colour variability within clutches: parasitized females allocated costly blue pigments to eggshells more equally compared with unparasitized ones. Our study revealed that cuckoos parasitize great reed warbler females of higher quality, as reflected in host body condition and egg colour characteristics. In highly mimetic systems, cuckoos may choose to parasitize hosts with eggs displaying low intraclutch variation, both because this leads to reduced rejection and because these hosts are of high quality.  相似文献

Exochomus flaviventris Mader is considered to be the most active predator of the cassava mealybug Phenacoccus manihoti Matile–Ferrero in Central Africa. The response of experienced gravid female coccinellids to the odor of cassava plant (var. Zanaga), unparasitized mealybugs, plant–mealybug complex with or without feeding prey (parasitized or not), and plant–mealybug complex with or without conspecific coccinellids was investigated in a Y-tube olfactometer. The odor of uninfested cassava plants was not more attractive than clean air. Dual-choice tests revealed that mealybug-infested plants were preferred to mealybugs alone and mealybug-damaged plants and were the major sources of volatiles that attract females coccinellids to the microhabitat of its prey. The emission of volatile chemicals did not appear to be limited to the infested parts of the plant but did occur systemically throughout the plant. The presence of conspecific coccinellid larvae or adult males did not modify the attractiveness of the mealybug-infested plants. However, when an infested plant with conspecific predator females (alone or with conspecific males) was compared to an infested plant or infested plant with conspecific males, E. flaviventris females showed a preference for the last two sources of odor. The uninfested plant with conspecific males was also preferred to the uninfested plant with conspecific females. In addition, the odor of conspecific males was preferred over that of conspecific females. Female predators preferred the plant infested with unparasitized mealybugs over the plant infested with mealybugs previously parasitized. These results showed that E. flaviventris females use herbivore-induced plant volatiles during foraging and can detect via olfaction the presence of conspecific gravid females and parasitized prey, thus assessing patch suitability from a distance.  相似文献

A rapid method is described for preparing and staining salivary glands of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus ticks infected with Theileria parva. The technique, involving the use of a modified methyl green pyronin stained minimizes the risk of losing material and allows examination of stained glands within minutes of preparation. The technique was applied in a series of studies in which ticks were either infected with T. parva under different conditions, or maturation of parasites in adult ticks was stimulated by different means. When nymphal ticks were fed on the ears of cattle the subsequent infection rate of the adult ticks showed no correlation with the parasitaemia of the cattle at the time of nymphal engorgement. There was no difference in infection rates between adult ticks in which parasite maturation had been stimulated either by incubation at 37 degree C or by feeding on rabbits. However, parasite maturation took about 1 day longer in incubated ticks than in rabbit-fed ticks. Female ticks were consistently more highly infected than males, both in terms of the percentage of ticks infected and the mean number of infected acini/tick. Ticks were infected with T. parva by injection of nymphs with parasitaemic bovine blood, but the resultant adult infection was lower than that in ticks which had been infected naturally by feeding on cattle.  相似文献

We examined the effect of Bt-cotton (Event 531) plants expressing the Bacillus thuringiensis δ-endotoxin CryIA(c) on two hymenopteran endoparasitoids, Cotesia marginiventris and Copidosoma floridanum. In the laboratory, parasitized and unparasitized Pseudoplusia includens larvae were reared on foliage from a conventional soybean cultivar (Pioneer 97B61), a conventional cotton cultivar (DPL 5415), or a Bt-cotton cultivar (NuCotn 33B). C. marginiventris developed significantly faster within P. includens larvae feeding on Pioneer 97B61 and DPL 5415 compared to those feeding on NuCotn 33B. C. marginiventris that developed inside P. includens larvae feeding on NuCotn 33B suffered reduced longevity, and females had fewer ova. NuCotn 33B also affected the growth and development of P. includens parasitized with C. floridanum and life history parameters of adult C. floridanum. Parasitized and unparasitized P. includens developed more slowly when they were fed NuCotn 33B and the prepupae weighed less. Survival of parasitized and unparasitized P. includens was lower when larvae were fed NuCotn 33B and some evidence points to higher susceptibility of parasitized caterpillars to intoxication by NuCotn 33B. Fewer C. floridanum adults emerged from hosts fed NuCotn 33B, but pupal weight and adult longevity were unaffected. Analysis comparing the two experiments conducted with C. floridanum suggests that older NuCotn 33B plants (90–120 days after planting) may affect parasitoid development and adult survival less than younger NuCotn 33B plants (60–90 days after planting). Feeding on NuCotn 33B by P. includens affected the survival and development of the two hymenopteran endoparasitoids studied here, and the degree of the effect was similar to that observed with natural resistance found in soybean plants. It remains to be determined if the effects demonstrated here are less than, equal to, or greater than the impact of conventional insecticide applications used in conventional, non-transgenic, cotton.  相似文献

The life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi was evaluated under laboratory conditions testing different host species. Larval infestations were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Nymphal infestations were performed on G. gallus, H. hydrochaeris, guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and wild mice (Calomys callosus). Infestations by adult ticks were performed only on capybaras. All free-living stages were observed in darkness at 27 degrees C and RH 85%. Capybaras were significantly (p < 0.05) the most suitable hosts for immature ticks, with the highest larval (63.6%) and nymphal (48%) recovery. Larval and nymphal feeding and premolt periods were significantly different (p < 0.05) between ticks fed on different host species. Male nymphs showed premolt period significantly shorter (p < 0.05) than female nymphs. The overall sex ratio of adult ticks was 0.92:1 (M:F). Infestations by adult ticks on capybaras yielded more than 76% of engorged female recovery. Only three out of 33 engorged females fed on capybaras did not lay fertile eggs. The life cycle of A. cooperi in laboratory, reported for the first time, was completed in an average period of 189.4 days. During the premolt period, all A. cooperi engorged nymphs secreted distinct blackish drops, which seem to be inherent to this species. Our results, associated data in the literature, confirm the high suitability of capybaras for the adult stage of A. cooperi and also indicate this animal species as a primary host for immature stages of A. cooperi in nature. On the other hand, the results of larval and nymphal infestation on chickens and guinea pigs suggest that birds and wild guinea pigs, which are also present in the distribution area of A. cooperi in South America, could be potentially infested by A. cooperi immature stages in nature.  相似文献
