Zoea I larvae of the brown shrimp Crangon crangon (Decapoda)were exposed to varying levels of UV radiation in a sunshinesimulator. Short-term exposures (08 h)were used to determine the highest UV dose with no significanteffect (NOEC; defined by limit of detection) and the lethaldose of 10 and 50% mortality (LD10 and LD50). Crangon crangonshowed a relatively high sensitivity to UVB radiation (NOEC= 10 kJ m2, LD10 = 15 kJ m2, LD50 = 24 kJ m2)compared to other crust-acean species. LD values (19971998)showed no adaptation to seasonal light regimes. Long-termexposures (010 days) were carried out to assessthe range where the law of reciprocity is valid.The larvae were exposed to UV levels of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.7 J m2for appropriate time intervals, always cumulating in a sublethaldose of 5 kJ m2 day1. Results reflect a possiblethreshold (0.20.4 J m2 UVB) in the effect of thedifferent UVB doses used; thus, a proportional relationshipof intensity and exposure time can only be shown at UVB levelsabove this threshold intensity. 相似文献

The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m3 to 5968.9 ind m3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m3 to 3965.3 ind m3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m3 to 13.04 mg m3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g1dry weight. 相似文献

Growth and ingestion rates of larval fish populations in the coastal waters of Israel 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Clupeoid larvae were collected on eight cruises between February1984 and February 1985 in the coastal waters of Israel. Fromanalysis of daily growth increments of otoliths, growth ratesof the abundant clupeoids, Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardusand Sardinella aurita were found to be 0.55 mm day1,0.67 mm day1 and 0.60 mm day1, respectively, duringthe first month after hatching. Ingestion rates were estimatedusing an equation from the literature relating ingestion andgrowth of larval fish. Ingestion calculated for populationsof fish larvae in pelagic waters ranged from 0 to >23 mgC m2 day1 with maximum rates observed in April.Annual ingestion by larval fish at a pelagic station near Haifawas calculated to be 2.2 g C m2 year1, 1020%of annual primary production estimated from 14C uptake. 相似文献

Sediment traps were deployed at a station in the Dona PaulaBay to collect sedimenting particles at weekly intervals fromNovember to May during 19951997. Sedimented particleswere analysed for total diatom flux, chlorophyll a (Chl a) andparticulate organic carbon (POC). The highest diatom flux wasrecorded in AprilMay for both the years. Fluxes of diatomsvaried from0.6 x 104 cells m2 day1 (November 1995)to 121.47 x 104 cells m2 day1 (December 1996).In all, 19 diatom genera were identified in the sedimented material.Navicula, Nitzschia, Pleurosigma, Licmophora, Coscinodiscus,Rhizosolenia and Surirella were the most abundant genera inthe sedimented material throughout the sampling period. Meanflux of POC and diatom carbon was 251 and 0.39 mg C m2day1, respectively. The diatom carbon accounted for 0.15%of the POC flux. Mass flux of diatoms showed significant negativecorrelation with the concentration of nitrate and phosphate.This suggests that the nutrient concentration played an importantrole in influencing the sedimentation of diatoms at this coastalstation. 相似文献

The population dynamics of the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita inSouthampton Water is characterized. Strobilation, indicatedby the presence of 1 mm ephyrae, occurred from the end of Januaryto the middle of March. Maximum abundances of up to 8.71 m3occurred soon after ephyrae release, after which numbers declinedsteadily until the end of June, when the population was absentfrom Southampton Water. The residence time of 34 monthsis somewhat less than that reported in many other areas, includingKiel Bight and Gullmarfjord. The carbon biomass of A.auritaaccounted for 9297% of the predominant gelatinous biomass(A.aurita, Pleurobrachia pileus and Phialidium hemisphericum)in the upper estuary, and this reached a maximum of 30.2 mgC m3 in May 1990 and 27.6 mg C m3 in June 1991.Coincident with increased water temperature and mesozooplanktonabundance during May, growth rates increased from 0.020.30mm day1 to a peak of 4.8 mm day1, with a maximumbell diameter of 120140 mm reached in late May/earlyJune. Size to maturity was variable, although the smallest medusaobserved to be ripe, i.e. containing dividingeggs and planula larvae in the brood sacs on the oral arms,were 6471 mm. Aurelia aurita is believed to be endemicto Southampton Water, but because of the double high water inthe area, short flushing rates of between 4.5 and 20 days maybe responsible for such short residence times of Aurelia medusae.The effects of strong NE winds were considered as factors governingthe distribution of medusae in years of atypical temporal abundance. 相似文献

The relationships between photosynthesis and photosyntheticphoton flux densities (PPFD, P-l) were studied during a red-tideof Dinophysis norvegica (July-August 1990) in Bedford Basin.Dinophysis norvegica, together with other dinoflagellates suchas Gonyaulax digitate, Ceratium tripos, contributed {small tilde}50%of the phytoplankton biomass that attained a maximum of 16.7µg Chla 1 and 11.93 106 total cells I1.The atomic ratios of carbon to nitrogen for D.norvegica rangedfrom 8.7 to 10.0. The photosynthetic characteristics of fractionatedphytoplankton (>30 µm) dominated by D.norvegica weresimilar to natural bloom assemblages: o (the initial slope ofthe P-l curves) ranged between 0.013 and 0.047 µg C [µgChla]1 h1 [µmol m s1]1the maximum photosynthetic rate, pBm, between 0.66 and 1.85µg C [µghla]1 h1; lk (the photoadaptationindex) from 14 to 69 µ,mol m2 s1. Carbonuptake rates of the isolated cells of D.norvegica (at 780 µmolm2 s1) ranged from 16 to 25 pg C cell1h and were lower than those for C.tripos, G.digitaleand some other dinoflagellates. The variation in carbon uptakerates of isolated cells of D.norvegica corresponded with PBmof the red-tide phytoplankton assemblages in the P-l experiments.Our study showed that D.norvegica, a toxigenic dinoflagellate,was the main contributor to the primary production in the bloom. 相似文献

Yield stress threshold (Y) and volumetric extensibility () arethe rheological properties that appear to control root growth.In this study they were measured in wheat roots by means ofparallel measurement of the growth rate (r) of intact wheatroots and of the turgor pressures (P) of individual cells withinthe expansion zone. Growth and turgor pressure were manipulatedby immersion in graded osmoticum (mannitol) solutions. Turgorwas measured with a pressure probe and growth rate by visualobservation. The influence of various growth conditions on Yand was investigated; (a) At 27 °C.In 0.5 mol m3 CaCl2 r, P, Y and were20.7±4.6 µm min1, 0.77±0.05 MPa,0.07±0.03 MPa and 26±1.9 µm min1MPa1 (expressed as increase in length), respectively.Following 24 h growth in 10 mol m3 KC1 these parametersbecame 12.3±3.5 µm min1, 0.72±0.04MPa, 0.13±0.01 MPa and 21±0.7 µm min1MPa1. After 24 h osmotic adjustment in 150 mol m3mannitol/0.5 mol m3 CaCl2 r= 19.6±4.2 µmmin1, P = 0.68±0.05 MPa and Y and were 0.07±0.04MPa and 30±0.2 µm min1 MPa01, respectively.After 24 h growth in 350 mol m3 mannitol/0.5 mol m3CaCl2 r= 13.3±4.1 µm min1, P= 0.58±0.07MPa, Y=0.12±0.01 MPa and ø 32±0.2 tim min1MPa1. During osmotic adjustment in 200 mol m3mannitol/0.5 mol m3 CaCl2, with or without KCl, the recoveryof growth rate corresponded to turgor pressure recovery (t1/2approximately 3 h). (b) At 15 °C. Lowered temperature dramatically influencedthe growth parameters which became r= 8.3±2.8 um min1,P=0.78 MPa, r=<0.2 MPa and =15±0.1 µm min1MPa1. Therefore, Y and are influenced by 10 mol m3 K+ ionsand low temperature. The seasonal variability of phytoplankton in the EquatorialAtlantic was analysed using Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor(SeaWiFS)-derived chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration data from1998 to 2001, together with in situ Chl a and primary productiondata obtained during seven cruises carried out between 1995and 2000. Monthly averaged SeaWiFS Chl a distributions werein agreement with previous observations in the Equatorial Atlantic,showing marked differences between 10° W in the EasternTropical Atlantic (ETRA) and 25° W in the Western TropicalAtlantic (WTRA) provinces (Longhurst et al. 1995. J. PlanktonRes., 17, 12451271). The seasonal cycle of SeaWiFS-derivedChl a concentration calculated for 010° S, 020°W (ETRA) is consistent with in situ Chl a measurements, withvalues ranging from 0.16 mg m3, from February to April,to 0.52 mg m3 in August. Lower variability was observedin 10° N10° S, 2030° W (WTRA) whereminimum and maximum concentrations occurred in April (0.15 mgm3) and in August (0.24 mg m3), respectively.A significant empirical relationship between depth-integratedprimary production and in situ measured sea surface Chl a wasfound for ETRA, allowing us to estimate the seasonal cycle ofdepth-integrated primary production from SeaWiFS-derived Chla. As for Chl a, this model was verified in a small area ofthe Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (010° S, 020°W), although in this instance it was not completely able todescribe the magnitude and temporal variability of in situ primaryproduction measurements. The annual euphotic depth-integratedprimary production rate estimated for ETRA by our empiricalmodel was 1.4 Gt C year1, which represents 16% of theopen ocean primary production estimated for the whole AtlanticOcean. 相似文献

Loliun perenne L. (cv.S. 23) was grown on vermiculite in winterin a heated greenhouse for 8 weeks under factorial combinationsof two potassium regimes (nominally 6 parts/106 and 156 parts/106in Hewitt's solution) and three densities of artificially supplementedvisible radiation flux (36.1, 7.3, and 2.2 W m2). Growthand potassium uptake were studied through the calculation ofvarious growth functions from fitted curves. There was little effect of potassium treatment but the experimentalmaterial responded markedly to light. Leaf-area ratio in thethree treatments showed extreme plasticity in increasing from23 x 102 through 6 x 102 to 89 x102 m2 g1 as light intensity decreased. Correspondingdecreases in unit leaf rate, however, caused over-all reductionsin relative growth rate. Specific absorption rates for potassium (AK, dry-weight basis)were strongly reduced at the lower light intensities but alsodisplayed complex ontogenetic drifts. Values of the allometricconstant, k (the ratio of root and shoot relative growth rates),decreased from c. 0.7 at 36.1 W m2 through c. 0.3 at7.3 W m2 to a value not significantly different fromzero (P < 0.05) at 2.2 W m2. In material grown under the two higher light intensities a constantinverse relationship was found between the mass ratio of rootand shoot and the corresponding activity ratio. The resultsconform to this model: Mass ratio = 0.001+45.0 (1/activityratio) where activity ratio is expressed as specific absorptionrate for potassium (in µg g root1 h1)/unitshoot rate (rate of increase of whole-plant dry weight per unitshoot dry weight, in mg g shoot1 h1). L-Leucine Transport in Isolated Protoplasts of Vinca Suspension Culture: Characterization of Uptake 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The uptake of L-leucine into Vinca protoplasts was studied undervarious conditions. The uptake was highly pH-dependent, withthe optimal pH between 3.0 and 4.0. The uptake was also energydependent, since azide, 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), carbonyl cyanidem-chlorophenyl hydrazone (CCCP), and iodoacetate inhibited theuptake. Oligomycin, N,N'-dicycIohexyI carbodiimide (DCCD) andvanadate, but not ouabain, inhibited the uptake, suggestingthat ATPase for H+ electrogenic extrusion was necessary to theuptake of L-leucine. The uptake showed stereospecificity, butwas partially inhibited by other L-amino acids. A kinetic studyof the uptake showed that the uptake was multiphasic with threesaturable phases and one unsaturable phase which occurred atconcentrations of L-leucine over 1 mM. The Km values of thethree affinity sites were 1.4 x 103 M, 1.3 x 104M, 4.3 x 105 M; the maximum velocity values were 3.3x 108, 4.5 x 109, 1.8 x 109 mol/10 min/4x 106 cells. In three experiments measurements of photosynthesis were madeon single leaves of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) on threecultivars grown in a controlled environment. Plants which had grown under an irradiance of 30 J m2s1, or in shade within a simulated mixed sward, producedleaves with photosynthetic capacities some 30 per cent lowerthan did plants grown at 120 J m2 s1 without shade.There were no differences between treatments either in photosynthesismeasured at 30 J m2 s1, or in respiration ratesper unit leaf dry weight. Respiration per unit leaf area washigher in the plants grown at 120 J m2 s1, reflectingthe lower specific leaf area of these leaves. There were nodifferences between the three cultivars examined. Leaves which were removed from the shade of a simulated swardshortly after becoming half expanded achieved photosyntheticcapacities as high as those which were in full light throughouttheir development. It is suggested that it is this characteristicwhich enables clover plants growing in an increasingly densemixed sward to produce a succession of leaves of high photosyntheticcapacity, even though each lamina only reaches the top of thesward at a relatively late stage in its development. Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L. botrytis) and broccoli (Brassicaoleracea L. italica) plants were grown in large pots in growthchambers for a range of temperatures (mean air temperaturesfrom 7.0-25.3 C) and irradi-ances (from 9.3-50.8 mol m2d1 or 4.7-25.4 MJ m2 d1). The extinctioncoefficient for PAR decreased with plant size reaching a valueof 0.55 in cauliflower and 0.45 in broccoli at plant leaf areasof 0.235 m2 and 0.227 m2, respectively. The leaf area expansionrate was unaffected by irradiance when compared at identicalleaf surface temperatures. The response of expansion rate tosurface temperature was fitted to a broken stick model witha base temperature of 0.7C and an optimum temperatureof 21.0C. The radiation conversion coefficient increased withair temperature below 13.8C and remained constant above this.The estimated radiation conversion coefficient above 13.8Cand for a PPFD of 20 mol m2 d1 was 0.77 g mol1in cauliflower and 0.87 g mol1 in broccoli. The radiationconversion coefficient declined with increasing irradiance levelfrom a maximum of 1.89 g mol1 at near nil irradiancein cauliflower. Protoplasts were successfully isolated from internodal callustissues of both Oxalis glaucifolia and O. rhombeo-ovata whenthey were digested in a solution containing 0.1% (w/v) MacerozymeR-10, 0.5% (w/v) cellulase Onozuka R-10 and 0.3 mmol m3sucrose. Protoplasts proliferated to give cell colonies on Gamborget al.'s B5 medium supplemented with 0.3 mmol m3 mannitol,0.5 mg dm32, 4-D, and 2.0 mg dm3 kinetin. Calluswas produced upon transfer of cell colonies to Murashige andSkoog medium containing 2.0 mg dm3 l-naphthaleneaceticacid (NAA) and 0.1 mg dm3 kinetin for O. glaucifolia,or with 5.0 mg dm3 NAA and 0.5 mg dm3 6-benzylaminopurine,for O. rhombeo-ovata. Plants were regenerated from O. glaucifoliaprotoplasts on a medium containing 0.1 mg dm3 NAA, 1.0mg dm3 kinetin and 1.0 mg dm3 gibberellic acid,but only vascular nodules were differentiated by O. rhombeo-ovataprotoplast-derived calli. Various nitrate concentrations (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 20, 50 mol m3)were applied at weekly intervals for 10 weeks to the caesalpinioidlegume Chamaecrista fasciculata. Microscopic techniques andgeneral growth studies showed that nitrate affected both theplant and its rhizobial symbiosis. Two approaches to quantifying relationships between nutrientsupply and plant growth were compared with respect to growth,partitioning, uptake and assimilation of NO3 by non-nodulatedpea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Marma). Plants grown in flowing solutionculture were supplied with NO3 at relative addition rates(RAR) of 0·03, 0·06, 0·12, and 0·18d1, or constant external concentrations ([NO3)of 3, 10, 20, and 100 mmol m3 over 19 d. Following acclimation,relative growth rates (RGR)approached the corresponding RARbetween 0·030.12 d-1, although growth was notlimited by N supply at RAR =0.18 d-1. Growth rates showed littlechange with [NO3] between 10100 mmol m3(RGR=0·15 0·16 d-1). The absence of growthlimitation over this range was suggested by high unit absorptionrates of NO3, accumulation of NO3 in tissues andprogressive increases in shoot: root ratio. Rates of net uptakeof NO3 from 1 mol m3 solutions were assessed relativeto the growth-related requirement for NO3, showing thatthe relative uptake capacity increased with RGR between 0·030·06d1 , but decreased thereafter to a theoretical minimumvalue at RGR 相似文献

Epidermal strips from either well-watered or water-stressedplants of Commelina communis L. were subjected to a range ofABA concentrations (106103 mol m3)in the presence (330 parts 106 in air) or virtual absence(3 parts 106 in air) of CO2. The stomatal response toCO2 was greater in epidermis from water-stressed plants, althoughthere was a distinct CO2 response in epidermis from well-wateredplants. Additions of ABA via the incubation medium had littleeffect on the relative CO2 response. Stomata responded to ABAboth in the presence and virtual absence of CO2, but the relativeresponse to ABA was greatest in the high CO2 treatment. Whenwell-watered plants were sprayed with a 101 mol m3ABA solution 1 d prior to use, the stomatal response of detachedepidermis to both CO2 and ABA was very similar to that of epidermisdetached from water-stressed leaves. Ephyra larvae and small medusae (1.795 mm diameter, 0.01350mg ash-free dry wt, AFDW) of the scyphozoan jellyfish Aureliaaurita were used in predation experiments with phytoplankton(the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, 4 µm diameter, {smalltilde}6 x 106 µg AFDW cell1), ciliates (theoligotrich Strombidium sulcatum, 28 µm diameter, {smalltilde}2 x 103 µg AFDW), rotifers (Synchaeta sp.,0.5 µg AFDW individual1) and mixed zooplankton(mainly copepods and cladocerans, 2.13.1 µg AFDWindividual1). Phytoplankton in natural concentrations(50200 µg C I1) were not utilized by largemedusae (4495 mm diameter). Ciliates in concentrationsfrom 0.5 to 50 individuals ml"1 were consumed by ephyra larvaeand small medusae (314 mm diameter) at a maximum predationrate of 171 prey day1, corresponding to a daily rationof 0.42%. The rotifer Synchaeta sp., offered in concentrationsof 100600 prey I1, resulted in daily rations ofephyra larvae (25 mm diameter) between 1 and 13%. Mixedzooplankton allowed the highest daily rations, usually in therange 540%. Large medusae (>45 mm diameter) consumedbetween 2000 and 3500 prey organisms day"1 in prey concentrationsexceeding 100 I1. Predation rate and daily ration werepositively correlated with prey abundance. Seen over a broadsize spectrum, the daily ration decreased with increased medusasize. The daily rations observed in high abundance of mixedzooplankton suggest a potential scope for growththat exceeds the growth rate observed in field populations,and this, in turn, suggests that the natural populations areusually food limited. The predicted predation rate at averageprey concentrations that are characteristic of neritic environmentscannot explain the maximum growth rates observed in field populations.It is therefore suggested that exploitation of patches of preyin high abundance is an important component in the trophodynamicsof this species.

Phosphate uptake rates in Synechococcus R-2 in BG-11 media (anitrate-based medium, not phosphate limited) were measured usingcells grown semi-continuously and in continuous culture. Netuptake of phosphate is proportional to external concentration.Growing cells at pHo 10 have a net uptake rate of about 600pmol m2 s1 phosphate, but the isotopic flux for32P phosphate was about 4 nmol m2 s1. There appearsto be a constitutive over-capacity for phosphate uptake. TheKm and Vmax, of the saturable component were not significantlydifferent at pHo 7.5 and 10, hence the transport system probablyrecognizes both H2PO4and HPO24. The intracellularinorganic phosphate concentration is about 3 to 10 mol m3,but there is an intracellular polyphosphate store of about 400mol m3. Intracellular inorganic phosphate is 25 to 50kJ mol1 from electrochemical equilibrium in both thelight and dark and at pHo 7.5 and 10. Phosphate uptake is veryslow in the dark ( 100 pmol m2 s1) and is light-activated(pHo 7.51.3 nmol m2 s1, pHo 10600 pmol m2s1). Uptake has an irreversible requirement for Mg2+in the medium. Uptake in the light is strongly Na+-dependent.Phosphate uptake was negatively electrogenic (net negative chargetaken up when transporting phosphate) at pHo 7.5, but positivelyelectrogenic at pHo 10. This seems to exclude a sodium motiveforce driven mechanism. An ATP-driven phosphate uptake mechanismneeds to have a stoichiometry of one phosphate taken up perATP (1 PO4 in/ATP) to be thermodynamically possible under allthe conditions tested in the present study. The epidermal salt-secreting glands of Limonium (Plumbaginaceae)are enclosed in a cuticular envelope. Ions and metabolites enterthe glands from the mesophyll through gaps in the cuticularenvelope, the transfusion zones. Net influxes of ions acrossthe transfusion zone were calculated from measurements of secretionrates and transfusion zone areas. When leaves of L. pereziiF. T. Hubb. were treated with 300 mol m3 NaCl, transfusionzone influxes of Na+ K+, Ca++ and Cl as high as 7?0?105,1.7?105, 5?8?107 and 8.5?105 mol m2s1 respectively, were calculated. Zooplankton in the Vasikkalampi pond, a warm water effluent recipient in Central Finland 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Seasonal and vertical fluctuations of zooplankton species composition,biomass, and production were monitored by weekly sampling duringa two year period in one eutrophic pond in Central Finland.The study was one part of a more comprehensive study programto investigate the effects of warm water effluents from onesmall thermal power plant (35 MW) on the pond ecosystem. Becauseof the circulation of the pond water through the pumps in thepower plant the crustacean populations were very sparse in planktonduring the seasons the power plant was in operation (late Augustto May). During that time rotifers were dominant and some speciesreached very high densities (e.g., Keratella cochlearis s.l.ca. 15 000 ind. l1 in sping). In summer months Asplanchnapriodonta, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Bosmina longirostris, Mesocyclopsleuckarti and Thermocyclops oithonoides were dominant. A totalof 96 planktonic and meroplanktonic taxa were identified (26ciliates, 46 rotifers, 21 cladocerans and 3 copepods). The dryweight biomass of total zooplankton was 10 mg m3 in wintermonths, 10100 mg m3 in spring and 3001000mg m3 in summer. The total yearly production of zooplanktonwas 8552 mg dry wt m3 a1 in 1979 and 8440 mg drywt m3 a1 in 1980, from which the proportion ofrotifers was 3339%, cladocerans 5258% and copepods8.6 9.4%. The winter production was 0.20.5% ofthe total yearly production, that of spring and autumn togetherwas 8.110.4% and the remainder (8991%) was summerproduction. 相似文献
