Striga hermonthica is a root hemiparasite that attacks onlyGramineae, includingSorghum and millet for which it is a principal cause of lowered yield. Enzyme electrophoresis was used to investigate genetic diversity inStriga hermonthica and to determine the level of differentiation between host-specialized populations. Nine genetic loci coding eight enzymes were interpreted and data obtained from three populations: oneSorghum-adapted population from Sudan and two populations from Burkina Faso, oneSorghum-adapted and the other millet-adapted. Levels of polymorphism were similarly high in all three populations (P=0.625, A=2.6–2.8, H=0.293–0.401). Genotypic frequencies at most loci conformed to Hardy-Weinberg expectations in each population, consistent with outcrossing as predicted from previous studies of floral biology. Occasional heterozygote deficiencies were probably the result of Wahlund effect. The mean value of FST over the three populations was 0.068, indicating a slight to moderate level of genetic differentiation among the populations. The two Burkina Faso populations were more closely related (S=0.940, D=0.006) than either was to the Sudan population, suggesting that geographic separation is more important than host specialization in contributing to population differentiation. TheSorghum-adapted population was slightly closer to the Burkina FasoSorghum-adapted population (S=0.873, D=0.047) than to Burkina Faso millet-adapted population (S=0.851, D=0.074). The absence of substantial genetic divergence between host-specific populations ofStriga could result either from recent evolution of host-specialized strains or from strong selection for physiological specialization in the face of substantial gene flow between the populations.  相似文献

Fusarium equiseti (Corda) Saccardo (IMI Number 311922b) was isolated from diseasedStriga hermonthica (Del.) Bentham parasitic on sorghum in the Nuba Mountains Rural Development Project, Kordofan, Sudan in November 1986. Symptoms of the disease consisted of progressive blackening and drying of the leaves and flowers. The disease caused 50% mortality ofS. hermonthica populations in two areas.  相似文献

Glasshouse trials were performed to investigate the control of the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica by Fusarium nygamai and the performance of the host plant sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) using different inoculum substrates and inoculum amounts of the fungus. Optimal constant and alternating temperatures for the growth of the fungus were 25°C and 30/20°C, respectively. Striga incidence was decreased up to 100% when the fungus was incorporated into the soil preplanting. Emerged Striga plants at different stages of growth up to the flowering stage were killed by the fungus when the fungus was applied postemergent. In root-chamber trials none of the Striga seeds germinated when 10 ml inoculum suspension of 8 × 106 spores/ml of F. nygamai was applied on seeds of the parasitic weed sprinkled on the surface of filter paper. F. nygamai has potential as a bioherbicide for Striga control. Further studies regarding its performance under field conditions and its safety to the environment and humans should be assessed.  相似文献

Allozymes and morphological characters were used to test whether host race evolution—the genetic divergence of parasitic populations caused by adaptation to different host species—has occurred in desert mistletoe,Phoradendron californicum. Populations ofPhoradendron californicum from two hosts,Acacia greggii andProsopis glandulosa, were surveyed from the Mojave and Colorado deserts. Electrophoretic data indicated genetic differentiation of mistletoes occurring on these hosts. Three of four morphological characters (internode length, main shoot lateral shoot diameter ratio and berry color) also showed significant host-specific differentiation. These data support the hypothesis that host race formation has occurred or is occurring in this parasitic angiosperm.  相似文献

Genetic variation has been assessed in 30 populations (931 families) ofFaidherbia albida (Leguminosae, Mimosoideae) from across its entire African range, using six isozyme loci identified by five enzyme systems. Among the populations studied a null allele was proposed to explain the absence ofLap-1 activity in populations from southern and eastern Africa. The mean percentage of polymorphic loci per population, the mean number of alleles per locus and the mean genetic diversity within populations were 31.7%, 1.6 and 0.127 respectively. Genetic diversity was greatest in populations from West Africa and lowest in populations from eastern/southern Africa, with Ethiopian/Sudanese populations intermediate. The overall degree of genetic differentiation between populations (GST) indicated that approximately 56% of the enzyme variation resided within populations. Clustering of Nei's unbaised genetic distances calculated between all populations produced a dendrogram that generally followed the geographic distribution of the populations. Two major groups were identified that may be considered the eastern/southern African and the Ethiopian/West African clusters. Within the Ethiopian/West African cluster two subclusters could be recognised, one broadly corresponding to those populations from Ethiopia/Sudan and the other to those populations from West Africa. The implications of these results for theories regarding the origin ofF. albida in Africa are discussed.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation was examined betweenAdiantum capillus-veneris L. andA. ogasawarense Tagawa. A total of 136 individuals from two populations ofA. ogasawarense and three populations ofA. capillus-veneris were sampled. Allozymes encoded by 19 putative loci for nine enzyme systems were observed. The populations ofA. ogasawarense are genetically differentiated from those ofA. capillus-veneris; conspecific populations cluster together. However, genetic identity between two species was estimated to be 0.815, and indicates that the degree of allozyme differentiation is lower than those between endemic flowering plants and their progenitors. It is possible that the low genetic differentiation observed betweenA. ogasawarense andA. capillus-veneris results from a recent origin of the endemic species,A. ogasawarense.  相似文献

The genetic diversity and population structure of eighteenPotentilla fragariodes var.major (Rosaceae) populations in Korea were determined using genetic variations at 22 allozyme loci. The percent of polymorphic loci within the enzymes was 66.7%. Genetic diversity at the species level and at the population level was high (Hes = 0.203; Hep = 0.185, respectively), whereas the extent of the population divergence was relatively low (GST = 0.069). FIS, a measure of the deviation from random mating within the 18 populations, was 0.075. An indirect estimate of the number of migrants per generation (Nm = 3.36) indicated that gene flow was high among Korean populations of the species. In addition, analysis of fixation indices revealed a slight heterozygote deficiency in some populations and at some loci. Wide geographic ranges, perennial herbaceous nature and the persistence of multiple generations are associated with the high level of genetic variation. AlthoughP. fragariodes var.major usually propagated by asexually-produced ramets, we could not rule out the possibility that sexual reproduction occurred at a low rate because each ramet may produce terminal flowers. Mean genetic identity between populations was 0.983. It is highly probable that directional movement toward genetic uniformity in a relatively homogeneous habitat operates among Korean populations ofP. fragariodes var.major.  相似文献

Allozyme variation was studied in threeNilaparvata lugens biotypes infesting specific rice varieties and a biotype infesting a weed grass,Leersia hexandra. Of the 20 enzymes inN. lugens for which activity was noted, 9 were polymorphic. Eleven enzyme loci were monomorphic for the same allele in all biotype populations; the rest were polymorphic for two or more alleles. The mean number of alleles per polymorphic locus was 2.3, while the mean number of alleles per locus was 1.5; heterozygosity ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 (biotype 1 > biotype 3 >Leersia-infesting biotype > biotype 2). Allelic frequency differences were observed in five loci among the four biotypes. However, the coefficient of genetic identity (I) of 0.99+ showed that the four biotype populations were genetically close relatives or merely populations ofN. lugens undergoing genetic differentiation. The genusCrepidiastrum is distributed in East Asia and includes 7 species. In the Bonin Islands, three species ofCrepidiastrum occur, and all of them are endemic to the islands. For detecting the origin and speciation of these endemic species, electrophoretic studies have been done in three endemic species of the Bonin Islands as well as in the remaining four species ofCrepidiastrum, andYoungia denticulata which is considered to be closely related toCrepidiastrum. A total of 386 individuals were sampled from 14 populations. As a result, 17 loci of 10 enzyme systems were resolved and gene frequencies for each population were calculated. The genetic variability was low in island species, as reported in some oceanic island plants. Four groups were recognized in the dendrogram generated by the UPGMA method. The Bonin endemics were clustered together, suggesting a monophyletic origin.C. ameristophyllum andC. linguaefolium were found to be genetically very similar, and this may suggest recent and rapid speciation within the islands.  相似文献

The genetic variability of natural populations ofCapsella bursapastoris in North- and Middle-Europe has been estimated by means of enzyme assays. Zymograms of 81 populations have been developed. 17 loci could be identified, and 8 of them can be heterozygous. Genetic variability is greater between populations than within. No correlation between actual population sizes and genetic heterogeneity could be detected. Some electromorphs shift their frequencies proportionally to increasing adversity of climatic conditions, some appear to be constant over the whole area, and others are characterized by an apparently irregular variation pattern. Marginal populations comprise a significantly higher proportion of heterozygous plants than central ones. Apart from this clinal variation pattern, a mosaic pattern, strongly related to habitat conditions, was observed: genetic heterogeneity is greater in more intensively disturbed sites. The pattern of genetic variation in natural populations ofCapsella bursa-pastoris is rather highly influenced by the breeding system.  相似文献

Introduction of the Andean grain chenopod (Chenopodium quinoa) into North America placed this crop within the distributional range of a related wild species,C. berlandieri. This wild species, native to the North American flora, is cross-compatible withC. Quinoa. Isozyme analysis of progeny fromC. berlandieri plants growing within and at the periphery of theC. Quinoa fields, combined with fertility assessment and phenetic comparison among putative hybrids and parental types, indicates that over 30% of progeny from wild plants growing as weeds withC. quinoa in 1987 were crop/weed hybrids. This high incidence of interspecific gene flow from crop to weed appears to be the result of asymmetric pollen flow to free-living plants from high-density cultivated populations. The observed level of crop/weed hybridization, combined with heterosis and partial fertility of F1 crop/weed hybrids, suggests that repeated annual cycles ofC. quinoa cultivation within the North American range ofC. berlandieri could produce introgressive change among sympatric wild populations. In terms of risk assessment for biotechnology, these results suggest that the breeding system may not provide an accurate indication of the potential for genetic interaction among predominately self-pollinating grain crops and their free-living relatives.  相似文献

Data are presented on genetic variation at 27 enzyme loci of the Green-Winged orchid,Orchis morio, in 18 population samples from Italy. The existence in Italy of two subspecies, i.e. subspp.morio andpicta, is not supported by allozyme data. No genetic heterogeneity was found betweenmorio-like andpicta-like samples and specimens. Moreover, morphological transition between the two forms was observed in different Italian populations. The parameters of genetic variability estimated forO. morio populations are consistent with those found among monocotyledon plants, and among those outcrossing, animal-pollinated and with wind-dispersed seeds. Genetic diversity of ItalianO. morio is mostly within populations. Correspondingly, low values of interpopulational genetic distance were found. This appears to be due to high levels of gene flow, which were estimated with different methods. The lack ofO. longicornu from Italian samples, as well as of any hybrid withO. morio (F1, backcrossed or recombinant individuals) is demonstrated on the basis of genetic data. It is concluded that recurrent reports ofO. longicornu from Italy are due to confusion withO. morio or with otherOrchis species.  相似文献

In order to determine genetic diversity ofOryza meyeriana (Zoll. et Mor. ex Steud.) Baill., 12 enzyme systems encoded by 17 loci were electrophoretically analyzed in 164 individuals of seven populations from Simao Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. In comparison with those seed plants with the same life history and breeding systems, as well as the other species in the genusOryza, the species shows rather low levels of genetic diversity (A = 1.1,P = 8.0 %, Ho = 0.004 and He = 0.015) within populations and high genetic differentiation among populations. Fst was up to 0. 649, suggesting that 64. 9% of total genetic variability exists among populations. Considering high genetic differentiation among populations from a limited geographic region, most of the populations of the species are worth being protected, and therefore, great natural protection regions should theoretically be established in which a great deal of populations should be involved for developingin situ conservation management. Meanwhile, some priory localities forin situ conservation ofO. meyerzana in Yunnan Province, were proposed. Levels and distribution of genetic variation were investigated in ten populations of the perennialArabis serrata distributed along a latitudinal gradient throughout Japan. Populations of this endemic species occupy predominantly three types of habitats: limestone and derived soils, volcanic and disturbed sites. Previous studies showed that plants ofA. serrata are differentiated in morphological and ecological traits under both natural conditions and common garden experiments suggesting genetic differentiation among populations. To assess the degree of genetic differentiation under different habitats ofA. serrata populations, we analyzed the isozyme genetic structure. Ten populations, located in mountains of central and northern Honshu and Hokkaido, were analyzed by starch gel enzyme electrophoresis. Fourteen loci of eight enzymes were resolved and six loci were monomorphic for all the populations. Populations sampled maintain low levels of genetic variation (P=0.16;H=0.05;A=1.16) compared to that maintained by other outcrossing seed plants. In some cases, few or no heterozygous individuals were detected, and consequently, mean observed heterozygosity was zero or near zero. Six (29%) of the fixation indices,F, estimated deviated significantly from Hardy Weinberg genotypic expectations indicating a deficiency of heterozygotes in most of the cases. The mean genetic identity (Nei'sI) between population pairs was 0.852 and indicates a moderate level of genetic differentiation among populations.Arabis serrata has most of its genetic variation distributed among rather than within populations. The among-population component of the total genetic diversity (G ST mean value) was 0.416, indicating genetic differentiation between populations. There groups of populations were recognized in an unrooted tree generated by the Neighbor-Joining method. These results suggest groups of populations differentiated regionally. Estimates of interpopulational gene flow (Nm) were very variable (range 0.049–3.718) with a meanNm=1.203 for all populations.

The genetic frequencies of 9 isozyme loci have been estimated in 23 samples of 4 species ofSecale by means of starch gel electrophoresis. The populations ofS. silvestre andS. vavilovii were monomorphic and uniform within each species, those ofS. montanum andS. cereale were polymorphic for most of the isozyme loci. On the basis of isozyme patterns as well as allelic and genotypic frequencies of isozyme loci,S. silvestre can be distinguished fromS. vavilovii, and both fromS. cereale andS. montanum; but there is no clear differentiation between the two latter species. Clusters constructed from genetic distances separateS. silvestre andS. vavilovii, whereasS. cereale andS. montanum were grouped together. The isozymatic data presented here, along with cytogenetic and life habit data, agree with the generally admitted existence of 4 species inSecale, and support the relationships suggested byKhush & Stebbins (1961).  相似文献

This study investigates the influence of host plants on the expression of floral variability in the hemiparasiteOrthocarpus densiflorus (Scrophulariaceae), to determine if interaction with host plants can facilitate the expression of normally hidden genes. Style extension inO. densiflorus is highly uniform in natural populations, with less than 1% of the individuals exhibiting an aberrant extended-style condition. Both seed treatment with giberellic acid and parasitic development with host plants significantly facilitates the expression of extended-style in progenies that show only minimal expression when grown autotrophically. Artificial selection experiments demonstrate the range of potential phenotypic variation to be under genetic control, and differentially influenced by the host environment. Although the biochemical basis of the host influence is unknown, some host plants produce stimuli that apparently disrupt buffering inO. densiflorus and expose normally unexpressed genetic variability to selection. If variation in other traits is similarly affected, the influence of host chemistry may provide parasitic plants with a greater than normal opportunity for rapid selectional change.  相似文献

Thirteen populations ofLarix decidua subsp.decidua and subsp.polonica, and three populations ofL. sibirica were investigated by starch-gel electrophoresis. In the populations assayed 61 alleles at 17 loci were revealed. The allozyme data support the earlier observations about close relationships between these two larch species. Nei's genetic distances betweenL. decidua andL. sibirica were relatively small (D = 0.057), however, almost five times larger, on average, than those between populations of the same species. Results obtained in this study disagree withBobrov's hypothesis about the hybrid origin of the Polish larch and suggest a direct origin from the European larch.  相似文献

Morphometric analyses of populations ofCrepis tectorum raised under uniform conditions support the earlier finding based on herbarium studies that extensive divergence has taken place in western Europe with a centre of diversity in the Baltic lowland area. A crossing experiment showed that subsp.pumila on the island of Öland has acquired a wide range of derived characters without the establishment of strong reproductive barriers, the only exception being a weak tendency for crosses with other populations on Öland to yield more fertile F1 offspring than crosses with weedy and non-weedy populations in adjacent regions. Canadian weed populations showed a more uniform response in crosses with subsp.pumila than did morphologically similar weed populations scattered throughout Central Europe. While F2 data suggest a monogenic basis of differences in the extent of leaf dissection, other distinctive traits appear to be governed by multiple genetic factors with individually slight effects.  相似文献

Trapa natansis an aquatic plant native to the Old World. In the late 1880s this plant was found to be naturalized in the eastern United States where it has become an important weed. To evaluate the potential of biological control to reduce this weed, surveys for natural enemies ofTrapaspp. were made in Northeast Asia and Europe. In addition, populations ofTrapa japonicain South Korea were monitored for one season to evaluate the occurrence and impact of insect natural enemies. Among the insects found, the leaf beetleGalerucella birmanicawas the most common and damaging species in Asia. It can cause complete defoliation of whole populations of plants. Nymphuline pyralid moths were also common and at times damaging. Both the beetle and the moths feed and develop on unrelated plants and so have no potential as biological control agents ofT. natansin North America. TwoNanophyesweevils were found in Asia which feed in petiole floats of the leaves. They are thought to be specific toTrapabut were not observed to be damaging. Low level populations of polyphagous Homoptera were common. Chironomid midges were also frequently associated with the plants, but for the most part were filter feeders, not herbivores. The greatest impact on the monitored plants in South Korea was by the leaf beetleG. birmanicawhich defoliated most of the plants, causing the mats of plants to sink. In Europe, a similar and related insect fauna was found, but none of the insects was very damaging to the plants. One Italian weevil,Bagous rufimanus, feeds within the fruit stems and might be more damaging at higher than observed population levels. Some diseases were seen on some plants in both regions. European populations ofT. natanshave declined significantly, stimulating conservation efforts. Literature records ofTrapainsects from warm areas are presented. These could be of interest ifT. natansspreads into warmer areas of North America.  相似文献
