We examined the adaptive significance of a temporal decrease in the calyx tube length of Clematis stans, a dioecious species pollinated by Bombus diversus (long proboscis) and B. honshuensis (short proboscis). We compared visitation frequency, pollen removal, pollen deposition, and fruit set after a single visit among three flower stages, differentiated by calyx tube length. Bombus diversus frequently visited and removed significantly more pollen from long flowers. Bombus honshuensis visited and tended to remove more pollen from short flowers. Both pollinators deposited more pollen in short flowers, resulting in higher fruit set. These results indicate that size correspondence between the proboscis and the calyx tube enhances visitation frequency and pollen removal, but not pollen deposition. Because a single visit does not fertilize all ovules of a flower, multiple visits by two bumble bee species may increase seed production and genetic diversity of offspring. By temporally changing calyx tube length, C. stans can use two bumble bee pollinators and maintain specialized relationships with each. This strategy may be adaptive when the pollinator fauna fluctuates, and is economical because it eliminates costs required to produce different types of flowers. This constitutes a novel pattern of temporal specialization in flower-pollinator relationships.

Nectaries and reproductive biology of Croton sarcopetalus (Euphorbiaceae)
Flower morphology, nectary structure, nectar chemical composition, breeding system, floral visitors and pollination were analysed in Croton sarcopetalus , a diclinous-monoecious shrub from Argentina. Male flowers have five receptacular nectaries, with no special vascular bundles, that consist of a uniserial epidermis with stomata subtended by a secretory parenchyma. Female flowers bear two different types of nectaries: inner (IN) and outer (ON) floral nectaries. IN, five in all, are structurally similar to the nectaries of male flowers. The five ON are vascularized, stalked, and composed of secretory, column-shaped epidermal cells without stomata subtended by secretory and ground parenchyma. In addition, ON act as post-floral nectaries secreting nectar during fruit ripening. Extrafloral nectaries (EFN) are located on petioles, stipules and leaf margins. Petiolar EFN are patelliform, stalked and anatomically similar to the ON of the female flower. Nectar sampled from all nectary types is hexose dominant, except for the ON of the female flower at the post-floral stage that is sucrose dominant. The species is self-compatible, but geitonogamous fertilization is rarely possible because male and female flowers are not usually open at the same time in the same individual, i.e. there is temporal dioecism. Flowers are visited by 22 insect species, wasps being the most important group of pollinators. No significant differences were found in fruit and seed set between natural and hand pollinated flowers. This pattern indicates that fruit production in this species is not pollen/pollinator limited and is mediated by a wide array of pollinators.

Pollinator attraction, pollen limitation, resource limitation, pollen donation and selective fruit abortion have all been proposed as processes explaining why hermaphroditic plants commonly produce many more flowers than mature fruit. We conducted a series of experiments in Arizona to investigate low fruit-to-flower ratios in senita cacti, which rely exclusively on pollinating seed-consumers. Selective abortion of fruit based on seed predators is of particular interest in this case because plants relying on pollinating seed-consumers are predicted to have such a mechanism to minimize seed loss. Pollinator attraction and pollen dispersal increased with flower number, but fruit set did not, refuting the hypothesis that excess flowers increase fruit set by attracting more pollinators. Fruit set of natural- and hand-pollinated flowers were not different, supporting the resource, rather than pollen, limitation hypothesis. Senita did abort fruit, but not selectively based on pollen quantity, pollen donors, or seed predators. Collectively, these results are consistent with sex allocation theory in that resource allocation to excess flower production can increase pollen dispersal and the male fitness function of flowers, but consequently results in reduced resources available for fruit set. Inconsistent with sex allocation theory, however, fruit production and the female fitness function of flowers may actually increase with flower production. This is because excess flower production lowers pollinator-to-flower ratios and results in fruit abortion, both of which limit the abundance and hence oviposition rates, of pre-dispersal seed predators.

Teak flowers are weakly protandrous and pollen is shed withina few hours of flower opening. Pollen is tricolpate and 29 µmin diameter. The papillate stigma is of the wet type and isreceptive from 1100–1300h. The style is hollow throughoutits length. Nectar and pollen are the major floral rewards forpollinators. The major pollinators areCeratina sp. which carryteak pollen on most parts of their bodies, especially the specializedhair structures (scopal brushes) on the tibia. The most effectivepollination period in terms of flowers pollinated and pollenper flower is between 0900 and 1300h. At 1300h the number ofpollen per flower is the highest, ranging from 1–36 (average7). Pollen tubes grow very fast. Within 2 h after pollination8% of the pollen tubes have reached the micropylar end of theovule and pollen tubes first enter the embryo sac at 8 h. Onlyone to two pollen tubes enter the micropyles of a flower. Although78% of flowers were pollinated in open-pollination, the lowfruit set (3.5%) suggests that there are factors other thanpollination limiting fruit set. The main factor appears to bea high amount of selfing, and self-incompatibility occurs whenpollen tubes are arrested at the lower portion of the ovary. The pollen donor and pollinator attractor hypotheses are explanations for the functions of the male flowers of andromonoecious plants. We tested these two hypotheses in the andromonoecious shrub Capparis spinosa L. (Capparaceae) and confirmed that pollen production and cumulative volume and sugar concentration of nectar do not differ between male and perfect flowers. However, male flowers produced larger anthers, larger pollen grains and smaller ovaries than perfect flowers. Observations on pollinators indicated that two major pollinators (Xylocopa valga Gerst and Proxylocopa sinensis Wu) did not discriminate between flower morphs and that they transferred pollen grains a similar distance. However, there were more seeds per fruit following hand pollination with pollen from male flowers than from perfect flowers. Individuals of C. spinosa with a larger floral display (i.e. bearing more flowers) received more pollen grains on the stigma of perfect flowers. Female reproductive success probably is not limited by pollen. These results indicate that male flowers of C. spinosa save resources for female function and that they primarily serve to attract pollinators as pollen donors.

Abstract The pollination biology of Heloniopsis orientalis was investigated in the lowlands of south central Japan. The receptive stigma emerges from the perianth before the opening of the perianth, and anther dehiscence is late about two days for perianth opening. The flower therefore is protogynous even though no insects visit the unopen flowers. Receptivity of the stigma is maintained for about 8 days, and even the 10 day-old flower can produce seeds. Self-pollination may be rather common in H. orientalis , which is self-compatible, in particular in the flowers which open on days unfavorable for insect activity. Many species of Diptera and Hymenoptera forage on the flowers, and almost any insect can be their pollinator. Long life, self-compatibility of the flowers, and many kinds of pollinators seem to be factors favoring H. orientalis , which blooms in very early spring when the pollinator supply is unstable but which nevertheless bears many seeds.

The rate of pollen exchange within and among flowers may depend on pollinator attraction traits such as floral display size and flowering plant density. Variations in these traits may influence pollinator movements, pollen receipt, and seed number. To assess how floral display size and flowering plant density affect parameters of pollinator visitation rate, pollen receipt per flower, seed number per fruit and the between-plant pollinator movements, we studied the self-incompatible plant, Nierembergia linariifolia. Per-flower pollinator visitation rate and bout length increased linearly with increasing floral display size. Pollen receipt per flower increased linearly with increasing flowering plant density. For seed number per fruit, a polynomial model describing an increased seed number per fruit at low density and a decreased seed number per fruit at high density provided a significant fit. Per-flower pollinator visitation rate was not associated with pollen receipt per flower and seed number per fruit. Bees visited plants located near to the center of the population more frequently than plants located at the periphery. Increases in both floral display size and flowering plant density led to an increased chance of a plant being chosen as the center of the pollinator foraging area. These results suggest that even though large floral displays and high flowering plant density are traits that attract more pollinators, they may also reduce potential mate diversity by restricting pollen movement to conspecific mates that are closely located.

Turnera hermannioides is a ruderal distylic subshrub, native to NE-Brazil. In the Catimbau National Park, situated within the semi-arid Caatinga region, we studied the pollination ecology of this species, emphasizing (1) effective pollinators; (2) characteristics of short- and long-styled flowers; (3) intra- and intermorph pollen flow; and (4) fruit and seed set. Short and long-styled morphs differ in pollen size and ornamentation, stigmatic surface, style and stamen length and nectar production. The flowers are obligate intermorphic outcrossers and depend on animals for pollination. The flowers of T. hermannioides attracted insect visitors of 25 species, among them butterflies, beetles, but mainly bees. Polylectic bees, such as Apis mellifera, stingless bees, and solitary Callonychium brasiliense were the most frequent visitors and the principal pollinators. The frequency of visits, however, was very low (on average 1.9 visits/flower/day), resulting in a low and unbalanced legitimate pollen flow, i.e. a much lower number of pollen grains from short-styled flowers reaching stigmas of long-styles than vice versa, which in turn compromised fruit and seed set. Surprisingly, Protomeliturga catimbaui and P. turnerae, both oligolectic on flowers of the Turneraceae-clade of the Passifloraceae s.l., were very rare flower visitors and did not contribute significantly to the pollination of Turnera hermannioides. We discuss how the low visitation rate and the inefficiency of pollinators (i.e. inefficiency in promoting legitimate pollination) compromise pollen flow and, consequently, fruit and seed set in this species.

We studied floral biology and the role of flower visitors in fruit set of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.). Muskmelon produced Staminate (hereafter ‘S’) and Hermaphrodite (hereafter ‘H’) flowers with a ratio of 18:1. Flowers opened around 40 days after planting and flowering continued for another 40 days. Longevity of both types of flowers was one day. Anthesis in S flowers was earlier (0545–0700 h) than that of H flowers (0700–0830 h). Anther dehiscence occurred 10–15 min after anthesis in both the flowers. The number of pollen grains in H flowers was significantly lower (2715 ± 143) than S flowers (4968 ± 398). Pollen viability and stigma receptivity was maximum between 1600 and 1800 h. The pollen tube of pollen grains from H flowers grew very slowly and never reached the ovary. There were two peaks in nectar production in a day (1000–1200 h and 1400–1800 h). Sixteen species of insects belonging to Hymenoptera (81.25%), Diptera (12.50%) and Lepidoptera (6.5%) visited muskmelon flowers. Major visitors were honeybees, Apis cerana F. and A. florea F. and both were efficient pollinators. Diversity and abundance of flower visitors positively correlated with floral abundance. In pollination exclusion experiments, no fruit set was observed in bagged, self-pollinated and the flowers artificially crossed only with other H pollen. But, those flowers hand pollinated with pollen from S flowers and ones that were allowed for open pollination set maximum fruits. The crop needs a minimum of 8–10 bee visits per flower to achieve the same level of pollination efficiency provided with natural/unrestrained visits.

Trumpet creeper is self-incompatible and bears long, tubular, orange flowers from June to September. Flowering peaks rapidly, then declines and continues at low levels for several weeks. The initial burst of flowering may attract pollinators that return even during subsequent reduced flowering. Most flowers open before noon and nectar production totals 110 μl of 26% sucrose equivalents per flower, an exceptionally high production for a temperate zone plant. Production ceases within 20–30 hr of flower opening, but corollas persist for several days and may serve to attract pollinators. Effective pollination reduces the period of stigma receptivity and speeds closing of stigma lobes. Only 1–9% of flowers produced mature fruits at four sites in Illinois and Missouri. Roughly 400 pollen grains had to be deposited on a receptive stigma to cause fruit development beyond an initial period of high abortion. At two sites, 17% and 89% of stigmas received over 400 pollen grains. Assuming 50% of deposited grains were from the same plant, fruit production at one site was clearly pollinator limited, that at the second site may have been. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) deposited ten times as much pollen per stigma per visit as honeybees (Apis mellifera) and bumblebees (Bombus spp.). Fruit set was highest where rubythroat visitation was most frequent. Trumpet creeper appears primarily adapted for hummingbird pollination, but can also be adequately pollinated by honeybees and bumblebees. This is one of the first attempts to relate pollen-depositing capabilities of pollinators of any plant to pollen requirements for fruit production. Several characteristics suggest that trumpet creeper may be adapted to pollination at low densities (often called traplining) in its presumed original, woodland, habitat.

Polygala vayredae is a narrow endemic species from the oriental pre-Pyrenees. Despite its conservation status and rarity, no information is available on its reproductive biology. As the flower is the structure directly involved in pollinator attraction, its morphological and functional traits have major effects on the reproductive success of the plant. In this work, the flower biology and breeding system of P. vayredae were studied to evaluate how they affect the reproductive outcome in natural populations. Flower morphology, flower rewards, and male and female functioning throughout the lifespan of the flower were assessed. Pollination experiments, involving pollinator exclusion and pollen from different sources, were conducted, and the pollen ovule index was determined. Female fitness and the occurrence of pollen limitation were assessed in three natural populations over 2 years by observing the presence of pollen on the stigma, pollen tube development, and fruit production. Polygala vayredae flowers are elaborate and long-lived with nectar rewards. The floral traits are well adapted to xenogamy and entomophily, which are in accordance with the observed breeding system and auto-incompatibility system. No mechanism of reproductive assurance was observed and P. vayredae strictly depends on pollinators to set fruit. Low fruit production was observed in the studied populations, which was largely the result of scarce, unreliable, and/or inefficient pollinators and poor pollen quality. In addition, available resources may be a limiting factor. The reproductive strategy of P. vayredae prevents inbreeding depression by a self-incompatibility system, which in years of scarce pollinators is overcome by the plant habit.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 157 , 67–81.

Butterfly pollination in the tropics is considered somewhat effective or solely effective in a few plant species. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that Mandevilla tenuifolia (Apocynaceae), which has floral attributes associated with psychophily, has strategies adapted to pollination by butterflies, restricting other floral visitors and making these insects act as efficient pollinators. We analysed the floral and reproductive biology of M. tenuifolia, as well as the frequency and efficiency of its flower visitors. M. tenuifolia is an herb whose flowers have strong herkogamy and secondary pollen presentation on the style head, which corresponds to 60.4% of pollen on the anthers. Flower longevity and the long period of receptivity of the stigmatic region associated with the large amount of pollen removed in the first visits suggest that flowers remain functionally female during part of anthesis. Butterflies, mainly of the families Nymphalidae and Pieridae, are the only pollinators of M. tenuifolia. Despite being self‐compatible, M. tenuifolia depends on biotic vectors for fruit production. A non‐significant difference in fruit set between controlled treatments and natural conditions suggests that the pollinators are efficient. The inclination resulting from the landing of butterflies on flowers, together with flower morphology, guiding the insect proboscis inside the floral tube, as well as the frequency and efficiency of butterfly visits, are evidence of the close relationship between butterflies and M. tenuifolia, and also of the efficiency of these insects as pollinators.

The critically endangered Synaphea stenoloba (Proteaceae) has numerous scentless flowers clustered in dense inflorescences and deploys a ballistic pollen ejection mechanism to release pollen. We examined the hypothesis that active pollen ejection and flowering patterns within an inflorescence influence the reproductive success (i.e. fruit formation) of individual flowers within or among inflorescences of S. stenoloba in a pollinator‐excluded environment. Our results showed that: (1) no pollen grains were observed deposited on the stigma of their own flower after the pollen ejection system was manually activated, indicating self‐pollination within an individual flower is improbable in S. stenoloba; (2) fruit set in the indoor open pollination treatment and the inflorescence‐closed pollination treatment indicated that S. stenoloba is self‐compatible and pollen ejection can potentially result in inter‐floral pollination success; (3) fruit set in the inflorescence‐closed pollination treatment was significantly lower than that of indoor open pollination, indicating within‐ and between‐flower pollination events in an inflorescence are most likely limited, with pollination between inflorescences providing the highest reproductive opportunity; and (4) analysis of the spatial distribution of cumulative fruit set on inflorescences showed that pollen could reach any flower within an inflorescence and there was no functional limitation on seed set among flowers located at various positions within the inflorescence. These data suggest that the pollen ejection mechanism in S. stenoloba can enhance inter‐plant pollination in pollinator‐excluded environments and may suggest adaptation to pollinator scarcity attributable to habitat disturbance or competition for pollinators in a diverse flora. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 170 , 59–68.

The floral biology of Nelumbo pentapetala (Walter) Fernald, the American lotus, native to Texas, was investigated. Anthesis occurs over three consecutive days with flowers opening each morning and closing around noon. First-day flowers are protogynous with the perianth parts partially expanded so that pollen-covered insects which are attracted by floral color and the intense “fruity” odor (diffused with the aid of increased floral temperature) are directed on to the flattened receptacle (= carpellary receptacle) from which the receptive stigmas protrude, thus accomplishing pollination. During the second morning anther dehiscence begins and insects which visit and forage within the flower become covered with pollen and typically crawl over the still receptive stigmas achieving “facilitated” self-pollination (indirect autogamy). By mid-morning of the second day the stigmas dry and become non-receptive to pollen. During the third day of anthesis perianth and staminal parts quickly abscise and over the period of a few weeks the receptacle and enclosed fruits mature. In most populations studied, Hymenoptera (e.g., Lusioglossum spp., and Apis mellifera) were the most abundant and effective pollinators. In some populations, however, Coleoptera (e.g., Chauliognathus) were also numerous and effective pollinators. It is suggested that the overall floral structure (e.g., large numbers of stamens, masses of pollen, staminal appendages) are adaptations which facilitate the pollination of Nelumbo by beetles.

Abstract Floral color changes are common in Weigela and the retention of post‐change flowers has been interpreted as a mechanism to increase attractiveness from a long distance and shorten pollinators’ lingering time on the inflorescence(s) of individual plants. In the present study, we investigated the temporal pattern of floral color change and time required for pollen tube growth in the shrub Weigela japonica var. sinica. Over the 4‐day anthesis, the color of the corolla in this species changes from white to red and the color cue changes from yellow to purple. The duration of both the white phase and the intermediate phase is approximately 1 day and the duration of the red phase is approximately 2 days. Our studies showed that color change in Weigela japonica var. sinica is age‐dependent but independent of pollinator visits and flower pollination. Post‐change flowers lost most of both the male and female residual reproductive ability and retained no rewards for pollinators. It took at least 3 days for a pollen tube to grow to the ovules and achieve fertilization. Thus, retention of post‐change flowers is necessary for the completion of pollen tube growth. Our results indicate that the temporal pattern of color change and time requirement for pollen tube growth are most likely related events.

Various aspects of the reproductive biology of the perennial hermaphroditeFrangula alnus Mill. were studied in two populations located in the province of Cádiz, southern Spain. Flowering extends from the second week of May to early July. The small, whitegreenish, entomophilous flowers are incompletely protandrous and last 8–10 days, but pollen transfer takes place only on days 1–3. A very weak, pleasant odour along with nectar and pollen attract over 45 insect species, of which 21 are probable pollinators. These are mainlyDiptera but also includeHymenoptera and the unusual (as flower visitors)Mecoptera. Reproduction is exclusively sexual and strictly xenogamous, with pollen transfer depending solely on insect vectors. Although flower morphology and individual flower phenology do not fully prevent self-pollination, and geitonogamy can easily take place, the level of autogamy was negligible. Therefore, some self-incompatibility mechanism is operative in this species. Only 2.8% of open-pollinated flowers set fruit. At the flower level, fruit initiation was apparently limited by availability of cross-pollen, which in turn seemed influenced by the structure of the population. The seed/ovule ratio in ripe fruits was ca. 50%. Predispersal (maternal) reproductive success (percent ovules becoming filled seeds) was 1.42%. For mature individuals this corresponded to ca. 430 to 1560 potential offspring per year.

Floral herbivores and pollinators are major determinants of plant reproduction. Because interaction of floral herbivores and pollinators occurs when herbivores attack the flowers in the bud and flower stages and because the compensatory ability of plants is known to differ according to the timing of herbivory, the effects of herbivory may differ according to its timing. In this study, we investigated the effects of floral herbivory at different stages on fruit production and seed/ovule ratio at two sites of large populations of the perennial herb, Iris gracilipes for 2 years. Herbivory at the bud and fruit stages both tended to have negative effects on fruit production, but the former caused more severe damage. On the other hand, herbivory at the flower stage tended not to have negative effects on fruit production because the degree of flower loss was smaller in the flower stage. Although herbivory decreased fruit production, flowers did not compensate for the damage by increasing the seed/ovule ratio because reproduction of I. gracilipes was limited by pollen availability rather than resources. These results indicate that floral herbivory at different stages has different effects on plant reproduction.

Floral traits that increase attractiveness to pollinators are predicted to evolve through selection on male function rather than on female function. To determine the importance of male-biased selection in dioecious Wurmbea dioica, we examined sexual dimorphism in flower size and number and the effects of these traits on pollinator visitation and reproductive success of male and female plants. Males produced more and larger flowers than did females. Bees and butterflies responded to this dimorphism and visited males more frequently than females, although flies did not differentiate between the sexes. Within sexes, insect pollinators made more visits to and visited more flowers on plants with many flowers. However, visits per flower did not vary with flower number, indicating that visitation was proportional to the number of flowers per plant. When flower number was experimentally held constant, visitation increased with flower size under sunny but not overcast conditions. Flower size but not number affected pollen removal per flower in males and deposition in females. In males, pollen removal increased with flower size 3 days after flowers opened, but not after 6 days when 98% of pollen was removed. Males with larger flowers therefore, may have higher fitness not because pollen removal is more complete, but because pollen is removed more rapidly providing opportunities to pre-empt ovules. In females, pollen deposition increased with flower size 3 days but not 6 days after flowers opened. At both times, deposition exceeded ovule production by four-fold or more, and for 2 years seed production was not limited by pollen. Flower size had no effect on seed production per plant and was negatively related to percent seed set, implying a tradeoff between allocation to attraction and reproductive success. This indicates that larger flower size in females is unlikely to increase fitness. In both sexes, gamete production was positively correlated with flower size. In males, greater pollen production would increase the advantage of large flowers, but in females more ovules may represent a resource cost. Selection to increase flower size and number in W. dioica has probably occurred through male rather than female function.
