A 12 month survey was carried out of the spider population in a commercial citrus grove at Kibbutz Afeq in Northern Israel. The spiders collected from grapefruit foliage and ground cover were identified; young stages were reared to maturity and then identified.Chiracanthium mildei L. Koch represented 52% of all spiders captured during the year andTheridion sp. accounted for 34%. In the undercover,Gnaphosidae spiders represented 43% of the total spiders captured in pitfall traps andLycosidae 35%. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the effectivness of spiders in biological control of the scaleCeroplastes floridensis Mask. in the citrus ecosystem. Wherever spiders were undisturbed on tree branches, populations ofC. floridensis were not able to develop to a level sufficient to cause economic damage. The increase in the number of scales was minimal: from 47 initially to 56. There was no damage to leaves nor was honeydew or sooty mold observed. During the same time period, on the 3 branches from which spiders had been eliminated, the number of scales increased seven-fold from 44 to 309. Leaves were heavily infested with sooty mold fungi that developed on the honeydew produced by the scales. The presence ofGeotrichum candidum citrus race, the citrus sour rot pathogen, was examined in soils of citrus groves and non-citrus fields of Japan. Soil samples were collected from 223 sites (118 sites in citrus groves, and 105 sites in fields cultivated with 33 species of non-citrus plants and in evergreen broad-leaved forest) in 11 main citrus-growing prefectures, and Hokkaido, a non-citrus-growing area. Of 236 soil samples from citrus groves, 95.76% containedG. candidum citrus race and 0.42% contained the non-citrus race; while of 210 samples from non-citrus fields, 62.85% and 4.76% contained the citrus race and the non-citrus race respectively. All of the citrus race isolates obtained either from citrus groves or non-citrus fields were pathogenic on lemon (Citrus limon) and satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu), but some of these isolates failed to infect orange (Citrus sinensis). The non-citrus races were pathogenic on ripe tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum) and ripe muskmelon fruit (Cucumis melo var.reticulatus). Results indicated that citrus sour rot pathogen is widely distributed in citrus groves and non-citrus fields of diverse plant species in Japan.  相似文献

Population dynamics of the Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama was studied in two‐week intervals throughout the season on lemon in a citrus orchard in Southern Baluchistan, Iran. Population peaks were observed in March, April and September 2007 to January 2008. Population levels were positively related to the availability of new shoot flushes, which were in turn related to the weekly minimum temperature. Also, the nymph population peaks were observed in three periods (beginning of March, end of August and end of January). Results indicated that moderate climatic conditions coupled with the flushing of citrus trees are two main factors for an increase of the development and activity of nymphs resulting in pest population increase, while extremes of both high and low temperatures, low relative humidity and high rainfall were detrimental. Four coccinellids (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), one syrphid (Diptera: Syrphidae), two parasitoids (Hymenoptera) and two spiders (Araneae) were determined as natural enemies of the psyllid in the studied area.  相似文献

Of seven isolates tested for pathogenecity, all could infect ten species of citrus fruits and edible parts of five species of noncitrus crops. The citrus blackfly Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae), a native of South East Asia, was first reported in Trinidad in 1998. As part of a classical biological control programme against the pest, releases of Amitus hesperidum Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Platygasteridae) were made in Trinidad from June to August 2000. Field studies were conducted on three commercial citrus farms, two large estates ( >500 ha) and one small orchard (<50 ha) where releases were initially made. Adult blackfly and Amitus populations were monitored weekly with yellow sticky traps. Immature blackfly and parasitism rates were monitored monthly by field sampling. During the study period, citrus blackfly populations declined by more than 98% at all sites while parasitism increased to 60–90%. There were, however, differences between locations, with control at Cumuto being reached within 4 months, at Todd’s Road between 6 and 7 months and at La Gloria about 13 months. This was consistent with the parasitism rates recorded. Although Encarsia perplexa Huang and Polaszek (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) was also introduced, it would seem that A. hesperidum was capable of bringing down and maintaining citrus blackfly populations at acceptable levels by itself.  相似文献

  • Citrus plants are host to several plant parasitic nematodes (PPNs), which are microscopic organisms. Among PPNs, the citrus root nematode, T. semipenetrans (Cobb 1913) (Tylenchida: Tylenchulidae), causes significant damage to citrus plantations worldwide. Understanding citrus nematode populations, precise identification, host preference among citrus species, and damage threshold are crucial to control T. semipenetrans. The minutiae of citrus plant–nematode interactions, nematode density and molecular nematode identification are not well understood. In this study, nematode species and density in citrus orchards, host specialization, molecular and morphological characteristics of nematodes were assessed.
  • Molecular and morphological methods, host–nematode interactions, host (citrus species) preference, damage economic threshold (ET), and economic injury level (EIL) were determined using laboratory methods and field sampling. Citrus plantations in different provinces in the Mediterranean region of Turkey were investigated.
  • Nematode species were identified molecularly and morphologically. ITS sequences revealed that samples were infected by citrus root nematode T. semipenetrans. The lowest nematode density was in C. reticulata in Mersin (53 2nd stage juveniles (J2s) 100 g−1 soil), while the highest density was from Hatay in C. sinensis (12173 J2s 100 g−1 soil). Highest citrus nematode population density was on roots of C. reticulata, followed by C. sinensis, C. limon, and C. paradisi.
  • The citrus nematode is more common than was thought and population fluctuations change according to specific citrus species. Environmental conditions, host and ecological factors, such as temperature, soil pH, and soil nutrients, might influence nematode populations in citrus orchards. Investigating nematode density in diverse soil ecologies and the responses of different resistant/tolerant citrus species and cultivars to nematode populations is essential in future studies.

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) Diaphorina citri Kuwayama vectors pathogens that cause huanglongbing (HLB) or citrus greening devastating and economically im- portant disease present in most citrus growing regions. Young citrus shoots are required for psyllid reproduction and development. During winter citrus trees produce little or no new growth. Overwintering adults reproduce in spring on newly emerging shoots also attractive to other pests and beneficial insects. Botanicals and relatively selective insecti- cides could help to conserve beneficial insects and reduce pest resistance to insecticides. Sprays of Azadirachtin (Neem), Tropane (Datura), Spirotetramat, Spinetoram, and broad- spectrum Imidacloprid were evaluated to control ACP in spring and summer on 10-year-old "Kinow" Citrus reticulata Blanco trees producing new growth. Psyllid populations were high averaging 5-9 nymphs or adults per sample before treatment application. Nymphs or adults were significantly reduced to 0.5-1.5 per sample in all treatments for 3 weeks, aver- age 61%-83% reduction. No significant reduction in ladybeetles Adalia bipunctata, Ane- glei scardoni, Cheilomenes sexmaculata, and Coccinella septempunctata was observed. Syrphids, spiders and green lacewings were reduced in treated trees except with Tropane. Studies are warranted to assess impact of these predators on ACP and interaction with insecticides. Observed reduction in ACP populations may not be enough considering its reproductive potential and role in the spread of HLB. Follow-up sprays may be required to achieve additional suppression using rotations of different insecticides.  相似文献

The parasitoid complex of brown soft scale, Coccus hesperidum L., a multivoltine soft scale, was determined in southern California citrus over the period February 2004–March 2006. The survey was conducted by placing brown soft scale-infested yucca leaves in the canopy of citrus trees and subsequently rearing individually isolated parasitized scales in the laboratory. A total of 14 species parasitized brown soft scale in the field, the most abundant ones belonging to the genus Metaphycus Mercet (75%). The most abundant parasitoid species was Metaphycus angustifrons Compere (38% parasitism), and this is a new record of establishment for this species in California. Coccophagus species accounted for only 11% parasitism. There were important spatio-temporal differences across the parasitoid complex survey locations. We also found that the five most abundant encyrtid parasitoid species showed preferences for scales of different sizes. Our results have implications for biological control of citricola scale, Coccus pseudomagnoliarum (Kuwana), an important pest of citrus in the San Joaquin Valley of central California. Notably, this species is nearly absent in southern California. Brown soft scale is considered to be an alternate host for parasitoids of citricola scale, a univoltine soft scale, at times when the latter species is unavailable for parasitism.  相似文献

Four years after the release of two exotic parasitoids, Amitus hesperidum Silvestri (Hymenoptera: Platygasteridae) and Encarsia perplexa Huang and Polaszek (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) for the classical biological control of the citrus blackfly (CBF), Aleurocanthus woglumi Ashby (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) in Dominica, a survey was conducted to assess establishment as well as potential nontarget effects especially on Aleyrodidae and other related taxa. CBF populations were low to non-existent in 50 of 51 field sites examined. At the site where CBF was encountered, both E. perplexa and A. hesperidum were present and CBF populations were declining. The two parasitoids were not among the several species collected on nontarget Aleryodidae and Hemiptera. It is concluded that E. perplexa and A. hesperidum have kept CBF populations under effective biological control in Dominica and there is no evidence of any nontarget effects on other Aleyrodidae or their natural enemies. This study investigated the predominant leafhopper and treehopper (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha) species in Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC)‐affected citrus agroecosystems in Argentina, their seasonal fluctuation, and their potential role as vectors of Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al., using molecular methods for detection. More than 6 000 Auchenorrhyncha were collected from three citrus agroecosystems over a period of 3 years using yellow sticky traps and entomological nets. Cicadellidae and Membracidae were the most abundant families. Of the 43 species identified, five were predominant in citrus orchards, and three were predominant in weeds surrounding citrus plants. All predominant species and another four non‐predominant species tested positive for X. fastidiosa in PCR and real‐time PCR assays. In a transmission assay, Dechacona missionum (Berg), Tapajosa rubromarginata (Signoret), and Cyphonia clavigera (Fabricius) transmitted X. fastidiosa successfully. Scaphytopius bolivianus Oman and Frequenamia spiniventris (Linnavuori) populations increased once (during the summer), possibly due to favorable weather conditions, and Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg), Molomea lineiceps Young, and T. rubromarginata populations increased twice a year: once in summer and once in winter, coinciding with the increase in early citrus shoots (flush). Among the X. fastidiosa‐positive species, those with the higher population densities during the sprouting period, where trees are highly susceptible to infection, must be considered as most relevant vectors of CVC in the citrus‐growing areas in Argentina.  相似文献

柑砧术虱是柑桔新梢期重要害虫,刺吸为害。福建福州在柑桔上一年发生8代,在月桔、九里香上一年约发生10代左右,世代重叠,以成虫在柑桔叶背群集越冬,无完全滞育。4—5月气温22.3℃世代历期42.5天.6-7月27.2℃为24.4天.8月28.1℃为23.2天。10-12月19.6℃为52.9天。成虫寿命长,约历1个月半,越冬代长达半年。田间种群消长与柑桔芽梢抽发期相对应.一年中虫口数量出现3个高峰期,第一峰期3-4月为柑桔春梢主要抽发期,第二峰期5-6月为夏梢主要抽发期,第三峰期8~9月为秋梢主要抽发期,其中以秋梢期虫口数量最大.秋芽受害最重,次为春梢期。本还对柑桔术虱天敌进行调查,并对柑桔术虱卵、若虫和成虫进行药剂防治试验。  相似文献

A survey was conducted to determine the diversity and frequency of endemic entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) in citrus orchards in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The main aim of the survey was to obtain nematodes as biological control agents against false codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta, a key pest of citrus in South Africa. From a total of 202 samples, 35 (17%) tested positive for the presence of EPN. Of these, four isolates (11%) were found to be steinernematids, while 31 (89%) were heterorhabditids. Sequencing and characterisation of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was used to identify all nematode isolates to species level. Morphometrics, morphology and biology of the infective juvenile (IJ) and the first-generation male were used to support molecular identification and characterisation. The Steinernema spp. identified were Steinernema khoisanae, Steinernema yirgalemense and Steinernema citrae. This is the first report of S. yirgalemense in South Africa, while for S. citrae it is the second new steinernematid to be identified from South Africa. Heterorhabditis species identified include Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, Heterorhabditis zealandica and an unknown species of Heterorhabditis. Laboratory bioassays, using 24-well bioassay disks, have shown isolates of all six species found during the survey, to be highly virulent against the last instar of FCM larvae. S. yirgalemense, at a concentration of 50 IJs/FCM larva caused 100% mortality and 74% at a concentration of 200 IJs/pupa. Using a sand bioassay, S. yirgalemense gave 93% control of cocooned pupae and emerging moths at a concentration of 20 IJs/cm2. This is the first report on the potential use of EPN to control the soil-borne life stages of FCM, which includes larvae, pupae and emerging moths. It was shown that emerging moths were infected with nematodes, which may aid in control and dispersal.  相似文献

Citrus rust mite, Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead), is a major pest of citrus in Israel. Five species of predatory mites: Amblyseius herbicolus Chant, Euseius victoriensis (Womersley), Euseius elinae (Schicha), Typhlodromus rickeri Chant and Euseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot), were imported to improve the biological control of the pest. Mite rearing and sampling methods were developed and improved, and the predators were released. Recovery in some citrus orchards was recorded, but only E. victoriensis became established in the north of Israel.  相似文献

We monitored the activities of the Argentine ant,Iridomyrmex humilis (Mayr), in 3 citrus orchards during 1984 and 1985. We also monitored densities of citrus red mite,Panonychus citri (McGregor), the adult spider mite destroyer,Stethorus picipes Casey [Col.: Coccinellidae], and the predatory mite,Euseius tularensis Congdon [Acarina: Phytoseiidae] during the same period in ant-present and ant-free plots in each orchard. I. humilis was excluded for at least 9 months from trees pruned 60 cm from the ground following a basal application of 1 or 2 % chlorpyrifos 4 EC. Autumn densities ofP. citri in these ant-free plots were significantly lower than those in the plots infested withI. Humilis. S. picipes appeared to be the most important predator, maintaining lowP. citri densities on citrus in southern California in the absence ofI. humilis activity.S. picipes densities increased numerically in response to the early spring and late autumn increases in the density ofP. citri populations. However, in the presence ofI. humilis activity, effective predation was apparently inhibited. Densities ofE. tularensis were unaffected by the presence ofI. humilis, nor didE. tularensis respond to spring or autumn increases in the density ofP. citri populations in any of the orchards.   相似文献

Mining and characterizing microsatellites from citrus ESTs   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
Freely available computer programs were arranged in a pipeline to extract microsatellites from public citrus EST sequences, retrieved from the NCBI. In total, 3,278 bi- to hexa-type SSR-containing sequences were identified from 56,199 citrus ESTs. On an average, one SSR was found per 5.2 kb of EST sequence, with the tri-nucleotide motifs as the most abundant. Primer sequences flanking SSR motifs were successfully identified from 2,295 citrus ESTs. Among those, a subset (100 pairs) were synthesized and tested to determine polymorphism and heterozygosity between/within two genera, sweet orange (C. sinensis) and Poncirus (P. trifoliata), which are the parents of the citrus core mapping population selected for an international citrus genomics effort. Eighty-seven pairs of primers gave PCR amplification to the anticipated SSRs, of which 52 and 35 appear to be homozygous and heterozygous, respectively, in sweet orange, and 67 and 20, respectively, in Poncirus. By pairing the loci between the two intergeneric species, it was found that 40 are heterozygous in at least one species with two alleles (9), three alleles (28), or four alleles (3), and the remaining 47 are homozygous in both species with either one allele (31) or two alleles (16). These EST-derived SSRs can be a resource used for understanding of the citrus SSR distribution and frequency, and development of citrus EST-SSR genetic and physical maps. A fungal pathogen that killed adult Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Asian citrus psyllid) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) in Florida citrus groves during the fall of 2005 was identified and characterized. Investigation of this pathogen is important because D. citri vectors citrus greening disease (Huanglongbing), which was reported in Florida in 2005. The morphological and genetic data generated herein support identification of the fungus as Isaria fumosorosea Wize (Ifr) (=Paecilomyces fumosoroseus) (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae) from the Asian citrus psyllid (Ifr AsCP). Koch’s postulates were fulfilled after the fungus was isolated in vitro and transmitted to healthy psyllids, which then exhibited a diseased-phenotype similar to that observed in the field. Both in vitro growth characteristics and two Ifr AsCP-specific molecular markers discriminated the psyllid pathogen from another local Ifr isolate, Ifr 97 Apopka. These molecular markers will be useful to track the dynamics of this disease in D. citri populations. The potential for utilizing Ifr to complement existing psyllid pest management strategies is discussed.  相似文献

Field surveys were conducted from 2004 to 2007 to determine the species composition and relative abundance of natural enemies associated with colonies of either the citrus red mite, Panonychus citri, or the two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, in Valencian citrus orchards (eastern Spain). Fourteen species were recorded, six phytoseiid mites and eight insect predators. Two of them are reported for the first time on citrus in Spain and two more are first reports as predators associated with T. urticae. The community of predators associated with T. urticae and P. citri was almost identical, and the Morisita–Horn index of similarity between both natural enemy complexes was close to one, suggesting that predators forage on both pest species. Quantifying the presence of many known spider mites predators in Valencian citrus orchards is an important first step towards spider mite control. A challenge for future studies will be to establish conservation and/or augmentation management strategies for these predators, especially to improve T. urticae biological control.  相似文献

Earwigs are usually considered pest predators in orchards. Because of its worldwide distribution, most research on earwigs focuses on the European earwig Forficula auricularia Linnaeus (Insecta: Dermaptera: Forficulidae). However, very little is known of this species in Mediterranean citrus orchards. Earwigs and aphids were collected monthly during 5 years (2006–2010) from citrus canopies. Two species of earwigs were found: F. auricularia and Forficula pubescens Gené (=Guanchia pubescens), with the latter seldom cited in the literature. The goals of this study were (i) to document the abundance of these two earwig species in Mediterranean citrus canopies; (ii) to determine whether they are positively or negatively associated with each other, or randomly distributed; (iii) to measure the interannual variation of the abundance of both species during a 5‐year period and (iv) to evaluate the potential role of earwigs as pest predators in citrus canopies. As compared to colder regions, F. auricularia active period in citrus canopies in our study site lasted longer. Both species co‐occurred randomly in canopies. In 2006, both species showed approximately the same abundance, but in 2010, F. pubescens abundance in canopies was 28 times greater than that of F. auricularia. The potential role of earwigs as pest predators is higher in the Mediterranean than in other colder regions, because of the longer active period. F. auricularia is a sedentary generalist predator, already present in citrus canopies at the onset of most pest outbreaks, while F. pubescens arrived later to the canopies, but most likely was abundant enough to contribute in the control of citrus pests.  相似文献

The parasitoid complex of black scale Saissetia oleae (Olivier) (Hemiptera: Coccidae) was studied on citrus and olives to determine their relative abundance, seasonal trend, geographical distribution, and their incidence on black scale populations. Branches and leaves of ten citrus and four olive groves infested with black scale were periodically collected over the period March 2003–December 2005 in eastern Spain, covering an area of 10,000 km2. Adult parasitoids were also sampled with a portable engine-powered suction device. Black scale females were attacked by Scutellista caerulea (Fonscolombe) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), which was found beneath 35.4 ± 7.5% and 22.4 ± 3.5% female scale’s body in citrus and olive groves, respectively. However, S. caerulea attacked the scales when most of their eggs had already hatched. The parasitic mite Pyemotes herfsi (Oudemans) (Prostigmata: Pyemotidae) fed on all development stages of S. caerulea. The gregarious female’s endoparasitoid Metaphycus lounsburyi (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) was common in citrus and olive trees, but the parasitism rates it reached was low. Second and third instars of black scale were mainly parasitized by the solitary endoparasitoid Metaphycus flavus (Howard), and secondarily by Metaphycus helvolus (Compere) which was much less abundant and limited in distribution. Thus, M. helvolus, introduced 30 years ago, has not displaced M. flavus as in other Mediterranean areas. According to their abundance, distribution and incidence, M. flavus and S. caerulea appeared as the main parasitoids of black scale in eastern Spain, whereas M. helvolus and M. lounsburyi, considered the main parasitoids in other citrus and olive areas of the world, had a limited incidence. Recommendations for improving the level of biological control are discussed.  相似文献
