The spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most important insect pests attacking maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Recent studies have indicated that the pest is spreading to new locations where it was not reported before. In the current study, laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the combined effect of different levels of relative humidity and temperature regimes on the development and fecundity of C. partellus, as these physical factors are known to play an important role in the life cycle of insects and adaptability to local climate. Developmental time, longevity, potential fecundity and realized fecundity of C. partellus were measured under controlled conditions. Three temperature regimes (22°C, 26°C and 30°C) and three relative humidity levels (40%, 60% and 80%) were tested. It was found that temperature, relative humidity (RH) and their interaction significantly affected the developmental time, adult longevity, potential fecundity and realized fecundity of the pest. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. Mean duration of C. partellus life cycle was 70.2 days at 22°C and 80% RH, whereas it took only 26.5 days to complete its life cycle at 30°C and 40% RH. Male and female longevity were similar in most cases. The adult life span ranged between 6.9-11.1 days at 22°C and 3.1-7.2 days at 30°C for different levels of relative humidity. The most suitable conditions for C. partellus development and fecundity were 26-30°C temperatures regimes and 60-80% RH levels.  相似文献

The effect of environmental storage relative humidity (RH) on the moisture content, viability, and moist heat and gaseous ethylene oxide (EO) resistance of biological indicators (BIs) was evaluated. No statistically significant difference was observed between the initial Bacillus stearothermophilus spore population and the spore population of BIs stored at 20 degrees C and 0, 20, 44, of 55% RH or under ambient, 4 degrees C, or -20 degrees C conditions after 12 months. A statistically significant decrease in moist heat resistance from initial starting levels was found for BIs stored at 20 degrees C and either 0 or 20% RH. There was a statistically significant decrease in the B. subtilis BI spore population, compared with initial levels, when the BIs were stored at 20 degrees C and 0% RH concomitant with a significant increase in their EO resistance. BI storage at 20 degrees C and 20 or 44% RH, or under ambient, 4 degrees C, or -20 degrees C conditions, had no significant effect on EO resistance. BIs stored at 20 degrees C and 66% RH demonstrated a significantly lower EO resistance compared with starting levels.  相似文献

The development, survival, and fecundity of Scymnus subvillosus (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were studied at 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C, 60 +/- 5% RH, and a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h (5,000 lux) under laboratory conditions. The total developmental time from egg hatch to adult eclosion ranged from 22.6 d at 20 degrees C to 10.6 d at 35 degrees C. The developmental rates of the egg stage, the larval stage, and total preadult stage at different temperatures increased linearly with increasing temperature. The thermal summation of the egg stage, the larval stage, and the total preadult stage was 77.5, 145.8 and 300 degree-days (DD), respectively. The developmental threshold of the egg stage, the larval stage, and the total preadult stage was 7.4, 4.1, and 7.1 degrees C, respectively. The life history raw data were analyzed using the age-stage, two-sex life table. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.0845, 0.1138, 0.1395, and 0.0668 d(-1) at 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C, respectively. The net reproductive rate was highest at 25 degrees C (R0 = 78.7), and lowest at 35 degrees C (R0 = 4.7). The mean generation time was shortest at 35 degrees C (T = 23.9 d). The life table data can be used for the projection of population growth and designing mass rearing programs.  相似文献

Abstract This paper deals with the biological characteristics of the psocid Liposcelis entomophila (Enderlein) on a diet composed of whole wheat flour and yeast (10: 1) under different temperatures (17.5–35C) and relative humidities (50%-90% RH). The results showed that at 75% RH development time from egg to adult varied from 71. 9 d at 20% to 21.7 d at 35C. At 28C it varied from 23.0 d at 90% RH to 34.4 d at 60% RH. The development threshold and the effective accumulated temperature for entire immature stages were estimated at 15. 7C and 460. 7 day-degree, respectively. The survival rate from egg to adult was 64. 5% at 27. 5C while at 20C and 35C it was only 32.1% and 37. 0%, respectively. At 28C the survival rate ranged from 31. 2% at 60% RH to 67.8% at 80% RH. L. entomophila could not survive at any humidity at 17. 5C and below 50% RH. The average longevity of adult ranged from 32.4 d at 35C and 64.4 d at 20C. At 75% RH the mean egg production varied from 27.1 at 27. 5 C and 13. 9 at 20C and the greatest fecundity occurred at 90% RH with 28C. The optimal ranges of temperature and humidity for L. entomophila population growth were 27. 5–30C and 80%—90% RH. The distribution and the reason for its serious infestation in China are discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory clip-cage studies were conducted to quantify the temperature-dependent development, survivorship, and reproduction and to generate life history characteristics and population growth parameters of the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, on phenologically standardized greenhouse-grown cottons at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C. The developmental thresholds were estimated to be 6.3, 6.7, 5.9, 5.9, and 6.3 degrees C for first to fourth instars and for total nymphal development, respectively. The maximum rate of development were estimated to occur at 32.2, 30.8, 30.4, 30.0, and 30.2 degrees C for first to fourth instars and for total nymphal development, respectively. Increased temperature resulted in more rapid decline in survivorship, which was particularly sharp at 35 degrees C, dropping from 94 to 17% in 5 d. Number of days elapsed until first deposition of progeny increased progressively and sharply at temperatures 10 (26 d) to 15 (15 d) to 20 degrees C (8 d) and stabilized at 5 d for 25, 30, and 35 degrees C. Average lifetime fecundity of females rose from a low of 9.76 progeny at 10 degrees C to a peak of 58.9 progeny at 30 degrees C and declined sharply to 17.3 at 35 degrees C. Finite rate of population growth was highest at 25 degrees C and lowest at 10 degrees C. Although stage-specific developmental maxima occurred between 30 and 32 degrees C, a nonlinear regression model estimated 28.6 degrees C to be the optimum temperature for overall cotton aphid development, reproduction, and population increase.  相似文献

Demography of soybean aphid (Homoptera: Aphididae) at summer temperatures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, is now widely established in soybean, Glycine max L., production areas of the northern United States and southern Canada and is becoming an important economic pest. Temperature effect on soybean aphid fecundity and survivorship is not well understood. We determined the optimal temperature for soybean aphid growth and reproduction on soybean under controlled conditions. We constructed life tables for soybean aphid at 20, 25, 30, and 35 degrees C with a photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D) h. Population growth rates were greatest at 25 degrees C. As temperature increased, net fecundity, gross fecundity, generation time, and life expectancy decreased. The prereproductive period did not differ between 20 and 30 degrees C; however, at 30 degrees C aphids required more degree-days (base 8.6 degrees C) to develop. Nymphs exposed to 35 degrees C did not complete development, and all individuals died within 11 d. Reproductive periods were significantly different at all temperatures, with aphids reproducing longer and producing more progeny at 20 and 25 degrees C than at 30 or 35 degrees C. Using a modification of the nonlinear Logan model, we estimated upper and optimal developmental thresholds to be 34.9 and 27.8 degrees C, respectively. At 25 degrees C, aphid populations doubled in 1.5 d; at 20 and 30 degrees C, populations doubled in 1.9 d.  相似文献

Laboratory-prepared spore disks were stored for 96 weeks at 22 degrees C with 50% relative humidity (RH) and at 4 degrees C with less than 1% RH. At the same time commercial spore strips were stored for 64 weeks at 22 degrees C with 50% RH. The spore count per unit and the heat resistance were measured at the beginning of the experiment and after 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, and 96 weeks of storage. The laboratory-prepared spore disks stored at 4 degrees C with less than 1% RH showed less change in numbers of spores per disks and decrease in the survival time than did the disks stored at 22 degrees C with 50% RH. Both the laboratory-prepared spore disks and the commercial spore strips stored at 22 degrees C with 50% RH decreased in survival times with increased storage time. The relative change in the survival times with storage was less for the commercial spore strips than for the laboratory-prepared spore disks.

Laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluated three diatomaceous earth (DE) formulations--Protect-It, PyriSec (at dose rates 500, 1000, and 1500 ppm), and DEA-P (at dose rates 75, 150, and 500 ppm)--against the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) (Coleoptera: Bostrychidae), adults in stored maize, Zea mays L., at three temperatures (20, 25, and 30 degrees C) and two relative humidity (RH) levels (55 and 75%). At these conditions, the capability of progeny production in the treated substrate also was assessed. Adult survival was high, at all doses of Protect-It and PyriSec. Progeny production was also high. In contrast with the other two DEs, DEA-P was highly effective and caused complete mortality to the exposed P. truncatus adults, even at the lowest dose rate (75 ppm). In addition, progeny production was completely suppressed. Generally, Protect-it and PyriSec were more effective at 20 degrees C than at 30 degrees C. In contrast, the efficacy of DEA-P was continuously high in all temperatures and relative humidities examined.  相似文献

Anthocoris minki Dohrn is a promising indigenous Anthocoris species for the biological control of Agonoscena pistaciae Burck. and Laut. (Homoptera: Psyllidae) in pistachio orchards in Turkey. The adult longevity, fecundity, life table parameters and prey consumption of A. minki fed on Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) eggs were studied at combinations of three constant temperatures (20, 25 and 30 ± 1°C) with two relative humidity (RH) levels (40 and 65 ± 5%). Studies indicated that temperature and RH significantly affected adult longevity, fecundity and prey consumption of A. minki. The greatest adult female longevity was 116.0 days at 20°C and 65% RH; the shortest adult female longevity was 27.5 days at 30°C and 40% RH. At all tested temperatures, the oviposition period and prey consumption of both females and males significantly decreased at low RH compared to high RH. The highest and lowest total fecundities were 276.0 eggs (at 20°C and 65% RH) and 42.4 eggs (at 25°C and 40% RH), respectively. The intrinsic rates of natural increase (r m) at 40 and 65% RH were 0.049 and 0.076 at 20°C, 0.072 and 0.096 at 25°C and 0.076 and 0.112 at 30°C, respectively. The highest mean numbers of E. kuehniella eggs consumed by females and males were 859.6 (at 20°C) and 515.3 (at 25°C) at 65% RH, respectively; the lowest were 183.3 (at 20°C) and 95.5 (at 25°C) at 40% RH, respectively.  相似文献

The life table statistics of six native Kenyan species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea were established using a factitious host Corcyra cephalonica, Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), at eight different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35 degrees C) and two humidity levels (40-50 and 70-80%). The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature up to 30 degrees C. Both net reproduction rate and intrinsic rate of increase were higher at the lower humidity. Temperature inversely affected generation time of parasitoid strains regardless of the relative humidity. Two strains of Trichogramma sp. nr. mwanzai collected from both low and medium altitudes and Trichogrammatoidea sp. nr. lutea from the mid-altitudes, were better adapted to both low and high temperatures than the other strains, as indicated by the high intrinsic and net reproductive rates, at both humidity levels. These three strains appear to be promising candidates for augmentation biocontrol against the African bollworm Helicoverpa armigera in Kenya.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to determine the influence of temperature and relative humidity (RH) on germinability and viability of Mucor piriformis spores. Spores did not survive when stored at 35 °C and their survival rate decreased rapidly at 30 °C; however, spores remained viable for more than 1 year at 0 °C. RH also significantly affected spore viability. Spores held at 26 °C and 100% RH no longer germinated after 35 days, while those held at 75 or 90% RH germinated for 65 days. At 20 °C, RH had little effect on spore germinability. The effect of temperature and RH on percentage spore germination also varied. At all temperatures studied, spore viability decreased more rapidly with time at 100% RH than at 75 or 90% RH. The least favorable, temperature-humidity combination, 30 °C and 100% RH, decreased spore germination from 100% to less than 1% in 14 days.  相似文献

To counteract water loss due to excretion, cuticular transpiration and respiration, various groups of arthropods have developed mechanisms for active uptake of water vapor from unsaturated air. In this study, active uptake capabilities and water loss rates were examined in the various developmental stages of the cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis. To determine critical equilibrium humidity, the lowest relative humidity at which active water uptake can occur, pre-desiccated immature and adult fleas were placed in a series of humidity regimes ranging from 44 to 93% RH. Active uptake occurred in larval stages at relative humidities above 53% and in pre-pupae at 75-93% RH. Pupae and adults did not demonstrate active uptake at any humidity. Optimal uptake for larvae occurred between 20 and 30 degrees C. When placed over Drierite (<10% RH), larval and adult stages demonstrated a higher rate of water loss than pre-pupal and pupal stages. Active water uptake is necessary to ensure proper development of the larvae of C. felis. Active uptake ceases after the larval-pupal ecdysis and it appears that adults have lost the ability to actively uptake water.  相似文献

Ceratothripoides claratris (Shumsher) is a serious pest attacking tomatoes in Thailand. Temperature-dependent development of C. claratris was studied at seven constant temperatures, i.e. 22, 25, 27, 30, 34, 35 and 40 degrees C. Pre-adult survivorship was greatest (95%) at 25 and 30 degrees C and shortest at 22 degrees C. Egg-to-adult time decreased within the range of 20 to 30 degrees C and at 34 degrees C it started to increase. The lower thermal threshold for egg-to-adult development was estimated at 16 and 18 degrees C by linear regression and the modified Logan model, respectively. The optimum temperature for egg-to-adult development was estimated at 32-33 degrees C by the modified Logan model. The influence of temperature on reproduction and longevity of C. claratris was determined at 25, 30 and 35 and 40 degrees C. Both inseminated and virgin females failed to reproduce at 40 degrees C. Virgin females produced only male offspring, confirming arrhenotoky. The sex ratio of the offspring of fertilized females was strongly female-biased, except at 25 degrees C. Mean total fecundity per female and mean daily total fecundity per female were highest for both virgin and inseminated females at 30 degrees C. Female longevity was longest at 25 degrees C and shortest at 40 degrees C. Male longevity was longest at 30 degrees C and shortest at 40 degrees C. The net reproductive rate (R0) and intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was greatest at 30 degrees C while, mean generation time (G) and the doubling time (t) were highest at 25 degrees C. The finite rate of increase (lambda) was fairly constant (1.1-1.5 days) over the three temperatures tested. The pest potential of C. claratris for tropical Asia is discussed.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted on laboratory populations of Eriworm, Philosamia ricini Boisduval to study the effect of temperature and humidity on development, growth, survival and oviposition. Experiments were performed at four different temperatures (22 +/- 2 degrees C, 26 +/- 2 degrees C, 28 +/- 2 degrees C and 34 +/- 1 degrees C) each with three different humidities (50%, 70% and 90% relative humidity). Shortest developmental period (42 days) was observed in 28 +/- 2 degrees C and 70% RH. Longest developmental period was (63.6 days) observed in 22 +/- 2 degrees C at 50% RH. Highest larval weight (9.1 g) was found in 28 +/- 2 degrees C at 70% RH. Best pupal weight was observed in 26 +/- 2 degrees C at 70% RH. Weight of silk material was found to be maximum in 26 +/- 2 degrees C at 70% RH. Survival was best in 28 +/- 2 degrees C and 26 +/- 2 degrees C at 70% RH. Oviposition was found to be highest in 28 +/- 2 degrees C at 70% RH.  相似文献

The developmental and reproductive biology of a new avocado pest, Scirtothrips perseae Nakahara, was determined in the laboratory at five constant temperatures, 15, 20, 25, 27.5 and 30 degrees C. At 20 degrees C, S. perseae exhibited greatest larval to adult survivorship (41%), and mated females produced a greater proportion of female offspring at this temperature when compared to 15, 25, 27.5 and 30 degrees C. Average lifetime fecundity and preoviposition period was greatest at 15 degrees C at 39.6 eggs per female and 17.6 days, respectively. Jackknifed estimates of net reproduction (Ro), capacity for increase (rc), intrinsic rate of increase (rm), and finite rate of increase (lambda) were all significantly greater at 20 degrees C than corresponding values at 15, 25 and 27.5 degrees C. Population doubling time (Td) was significantly lower at 20 degrees C, indicating S. perseae populations can double 33-71% faster at this temperature in comparison to 15, 25 and 27.5 degrees C. Mean adult longevity decreased with increasing temperature, from a maximum of 52.4 days at 15 degrees C to a minimum of 2.4 days at 30 degrees C. Developmental rates increased linearly with increasing temperatures for eggs and rates were non-linear for development of first and second instar larvae, propupae, pupae, and for egg to adult development. Linear regression and fitting of the modified Logan model to developmental rate data for egg to adult development estimated that 344.8 day degrees were required above a minimum threshold of 6.9 degrees C to complete development. An upper developmental threshold was estimated at 37.6 degrees C with an optimal temperature of 30.5 degrees C for egg to adult development. Unmated females produced only male offspring confirming arrhenotoky in S. perseae.  相似文献

Humidification can suppress water loss from an organism and has great potential for improving the cold storage of short‐lived arthropods, such as predatory mites. The effectiveness of humidity‐controlled cold storage was recently verified for Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) females but was not examined for males. Combining both males and females in one storage protocol might increase the predator population because it would enhance the opportunity for multiple mating, which is necessary for females to maximize their egg production. Newly emerged adult males were stored at an air temperature of 5°C and relative humidity (RH) of 100% or 80%. The median survival time (LT50) was 32 days at 100% RH and 14 days at 80% RH; the survival curves differed significantly. Males stored at 100% RH for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days were introduced to virgin females for mating at 25°C to evaluate their reproductive ability. The pre‐oviposition period was significantly prolonged in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. No negative effects of storage were observed on the oviposition period, total number of eggs or net reproduction rate (R0) in the females mated with males stored for ≤20 days or on the mean generation time (T) for those stored for 30 days. A slight decrease in the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed in the females mated with males stored for ≥20 days. Our storage method can preserve N. californicus males for 20 days with only a minor reduction in their survival and reproductive ability.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of different temperatures and humidities on the infectivity of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices. Eighteen dogs (6 groups, n = 3 each) were fed with offal mince harbouring approximately 20,000 protoscolices of E. granulosus of different viabilities. Dogs were infected with E. granulosus protoscolices of: (1) 5% viability at -10 degrees C and 50% relative humidity (RH); (2) 30% viability at 0 degrees C and 60% RH; (3) 20% viability at +10 degrees C and 65% RH; (4) 15% viability at +30 degrees C and 75% RH; (5) 11% viability at +40 degrees C and 80% RH; (6) 68% viability (control group). Dogs in each group were necropsied at 29-49 days post-infection. Mean intensities of E. granulosus recovered from dogs were 256.7 +/- 60.3 in the second group; 32.7 +/- 7.1 in the third group; 40.3 +/- 15.5 in the fourth group and 1533 +/- 513 in the control group. However, no parasites were recovered from the first and fifth groups. Results obtained in the present study show that larval stages could be infective for 1 to 4 weeks during spring, autumn or winter months when maximal temperatures are approximately 0-10 degrees C. In conclusion, cold-storage depots in slaughterhouses and abattoirs where sheep carcasses might be discarded should be kept at -20 degrees C for 2-3 days, dogs should be properly controlled and adequate control programmes must be established in areas where the disease is endemic.  相似文献
