Abstract. The objective of this study was to determine how mycorrhizal infection of one generation of plants influences the nutrient dynamics of seeds and seedlings comprising the subsequent generation. We showed that, for Avena fatua L., seeds produced by mycorrhizal (M) plants consistently contained significantly more phosphorus (particularly the phytate P and residual P fractions) than seeds produced by non-mycorrhizal (NM) plants. We also followed the development of spikelets produced by M and NM plants. The rates of increase in spikelet dry weight and nitrogen content were largely unaffected by mycorrhizal infection. However, the rate of P accumulation into spikelets was significantly increased by mycorrhizal infection. Greater endosperm P reserves in seeds produced by M plants were associated with greater rates of P accumulation in resultant seedlings. Moreover, offspring plants (all NM) produced by M mother plants had significantly higher root and rhizosphere phosphatase, ATPase and phytase activities than offspring plants produced by NM mother plants. This persistent maternal effect has never before been described. Our results suggest that mycorrhizal infection of one generation of plants may have substantial positive effects on the offspring generation, and thus, may influence plant population dynamics.  相似文献

We examined in the field the effect of the vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorhizal symbiosis on the reproductive success of Abutilon theophrasti Medic., an early successional annual member of the Malvaceae. Mycorrhizal infection greatly enhanced vegetative growth, and flower, fruit and seed production, resulting in significantly greater recruitment the following year. In addition, the seeds produced by mycorrhizal plants were significantly larger and contained significantly more phosphorus than seeds from non-mycorrhizal plants, an effect which may improve offspring vigor. Infection by mycorrhizal fungi may thus contribute to the overall fitness of a host plant and strongly influence long-term plant population dynamics.  相似文献

Summary We examined how mycorrhizal infection byGlomus etunicatum Becker and Gerd. affected flowering phenology and components of reproduction in eight wild accessions and two cultivars ofLycopersicon esculentum Mill. We did this by performing a detailed demographic study of flower, fruit and seed production. Mycorrhizal infection had variable effects on the ten accessions. Infection significantly decreased the time taken to initiate flowering in some accessions. In addition, infection increased flowering duration in some accessions. In many accessions, infection significantly increased seed production, primarily by increasing the number of inflorescences and infructescences. In some accessions, mycorrhizal infection also increased the proportion of flowers that produced mature fruits or the number of seeds per fruit. Among accessions, shoot phosphorus content was correlated with seed productivity for both mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. However, non-mycorrhizal plants produced more seed biomass per mg of shoot phosphorus than mycorrhizal plants.  相似文献

Plant growth and phosphorus (P) uptake of two selections of rye (Secale cereale L.) differing in length of root hairs, in response to mycorrhizal infection were investigated. Rye plants with short root hairs (SRH) had a greater length of root infected by Glomus intraradices (up to 32 m pot–1) than those with long root hairs (LRH) (up to 10 m pot–1). Application of P decreased the percentage of root length infected in both selections. In low-P soil, mycorrhizal infection increased shoot and root P concentration, especially in LRH plants. Generally, LRH had higher shoot dry weight than SRH plants. P uptake was increased both by LRH and by mycorrhizal infection. Differences in specific P uptake and P utilization efficiency between SRH and LRH plants were observed in non-mycorrhizal plants. With low P supply, P utilization efficiency (dry matter yield per unit of P taken up) of LRH plants increased with time. However, mycorrhizal infection reduced P utilization efficiency, particularly of SRH plants. SRH plants, which were agronomically less efficient (i.e. low dry matter yield at low P supply) were more responsive to either mycorrhizal infection or P addition than the LRH plants. No interaction was observed between mycorrhizal infection and root hair length.  相似文献

The role of mycorrhizal infection in the resistance of Vaccinium macrocarpon to manganese was investigated in perlite culture containing nutrient solution amended with Mn at 0, 250, 500 or 1000 g/ml. Shoot and root dry weights of the mycorrhizal plants were higher than nonmycorrhizal plants. The mycorrhizal plants produced significantly longer main roots than the nonmycorrhizal plants. Differences between shoot and root Mn concentrations of mycorrhizal and nonmycorrhizal plants arose by reduction of Mn in the leaves of mycorrhizal plants and a corresponding increase in root tissues.  相似文献

Seeds of Tagetes erecta and Zinnia elegans were planted in soil inoculated with the vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus etunicatum. This procedure produced positive effects on both Tagetes and Zinnia compared with the control: faster flowering and an increased number of flowers. Shoot height, shoot and root dry weights and percentage infected root length were also measured. The reactions of these plants to mycorrhizal infection were shown to be independent of changes in the phosphorus, potassium and sodium contents of the plants. Accepted: 1 August 1995  相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that mycorrhizal infection benefits wild plants to a lesser extent than cultivated plants. This hypothesis stems from two observations: (1) mycorrhizal infection improves plant growth primarily by increasing nutrient uptake, and (2) wild plants often possess special adaptations to soil infertility which are less pronounced in modern cultivated plants. In the first experiment, wild (Avena fatua L.) and cultivated (A. sativa L.) oats were grown hydroponically at four different phosphorus levels. Wild oat was less responsive (in shoot dry weight) to increasing phosphorus availability than cultivated oat. In addition, the root: shoot ratio was much more plastic in wild oat (varying from 0.90 in the low phosphorus solution to 0.25 in the high phosphorus solution) than in cultivated oat (varying from 0.44 to 0.17). In the second experiment, mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal wild and cultivated oats were grown in a phosphorus-deficient soil. Mycorrhizal infection generally improved the vegetative growth of both wild and cultivated oats. However, infection significantly increased plant lifespan, number of panicles per plant, shoot phosphorus concentration, shoot phosphorus content, duration of flowering, and the mean weight of individual seeds in cultivated oat, while it had a significantly reduced effect, no effect, or a negative effect on these characters for wild oat. Poor positive responsiveness of wild oat in these characters was thus associated with what might be considered to be inherent adaptations to nutrient deficiency: high root: shoot ratio and inherently low growth rate. Infection also increased seed phosphorus content and reproductive allocation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to analyze morphological and physiological aspects of Arbutus unedo L. plants treated with paclobutrazol (PAC), compounds characterized by their double activity as plant growth regulators and fungicides, and the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus tinctorius (Pers.) Coker and Couch, which forms a special type of mycorrhizal colonization called arbutoid mycorrhiza. Native A. unedo L. seedlings were grown in a greenhouse and subjected to four treatments for 4 months: 0 or 60 mg of PAC and inoculated or not with P. tinctorius (Pers.). The arbutoid mycorrhizal inoculation increased in plants treated with PAC. Paclobutrazol reduced shoot and root biomass, plant height, internode length, stem diameter, leaf area, total root length and number of tips. P. tinctorius increased plant height and had a beneficial effect on the root system (increasing root diameter and the number of tips). PAC treatment led to an increase in ion levels in the leaf tissue, while mycorrhizal inoculation induced lower K and higher P contents in the roots. Leaf water potentials (at predawn and at midday) increased with the combined treatment. The absence of water deficit conditions meant there was no osmotic adjustment. Higher photosynthesis (Pn) values were associated with higher stomatal conductance (gs) values in the mycorrhizal plants, which influenced water uptake from the roots. However, gs decreased in the PAC-treated plants, reducing photosynthesis and, as a consequence, growth. The higher hydraulic conductivity (Lp) in the plants treated with PAC may have induced a better water energy status and good water transport. The combined treatment produced beneficial effects in the plants, improving their water and nutritional status.  相似文献

Grapevine N fertilization may affect and be affected by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal colonization and change berry composition. We studied the effects of different N fertilizers on AM fungal grapevine root colonization and sporulation, and on grapevine growth, nutrition, and berry composition, by conducting a 3.5-year pot study supplying grapevine plants with either urea, calcium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, or ammonium nitrate. We measured the percentage of AM fungal root colonization, AM fungal sporulation, grapevine shoot dry weight and number of leaves, nutrient composition (macro- and micronutrients), and grapevine berry soluble solids (total sugars or °Brix) and total acidity. Urea suppressed AM fungal root colonization and sporulation. Mycorrhizal grapevine plants had higher shoot dry weight and number of leaves than non-mycorrhizal and with a higher growth response with calcium nitrate as the N source. For the macronutrients P and K, and for the micronutrient B, leaf concentration was higher in mycorrhizal plants. Non-mycorrhizal plants had higher concentration of microelements Zn, Mn, Fe, and Cu than mycorrhizal. There were no differences in soluble solids (°Brix) in grapevine berries among mycorrhizal and non-mycorrhizal plants. However, non-mycorrhizal grapevine berries had higher acid content with ammonium nitrate, although they did not have better N nutrition and vegetative growth.  相似文献

Arsenic (As) contamination of irrigation water represents a major constraint to Bangladesh agriculture. While arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have their most significant effect on P uptake, they have also been shown to alleviate metal toxicity to the host plant. This study examined the effects of As and inoculation with an AM fungus, Glomus mosseae, on lentil (Lens culinaris L. cv. Titore). Plants were grown with and without AM inoculum for 9 weeks in a sand and terra green mixture 50:50 v/v and watered with five levels of As (0, 1, 2, 5, 10 mg As L−1 arsenate). Inoculum of Rhizobium leguminosarum b.v. Viceae strain 3841 was applied to all plants. Plants were fed with modified Hoagland solution (1/10 N of a full-strength solution and without P). Plant height, leaf number, pod number, plant biomass and shoot and root P concentration/offtake increased significantly due to mycorrhizal infection. Plant height, leaf/ pod number, plant biomass, root length, shoot P concentration/offtake, root P offtake and mycorrhizal infection decreased significantly with increasing As concentration. However, mycorrhizal inoculation reduced As concentration in roots and shoots. This study shows that growing lentil with compatible AM inoculum can minimise As toxicity and increase growth and P uptake.  相似文献

The growth response of Hevea brasiliensis to vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi inoculation was assessed in two field nursery sites containing indigenous mycorrhizal fungi (IMF). Seedling rootstocks were inoculated with mixed VAM-fungal species in a factorial combination with phosphorus (P) fertilizer application, and planted in randomised blocks on sandy (site 1) and clayey (site 2) soils. Plants were harvested after 26 weeks for measurements of shoot dry weight (DW), stem diameter, height, mycorrhizal root colonization and leaf nutrient contents. At site 1, VAM increased shoot DW, stem diameter and plant height only in treatments without P applied. Increases in shoot DW due to VAM were 70% greater than the uninoculated controls although this was reduced to 5% when P was applied. At site 2, VAM inoculation also increased shoot DW and stem diameter but the magnitude of the increases was smaller. Shoot DW response due to VAM was only 29%. At this second site, applying phosphate to uninoculated plants did not increase shoot yields further. Leaf concentrations of all nutrients were unaffected by VAM at both sites, except for copper (Cu) which was increased by VAM in treatments where P was not applied. However, leaf contents of P, potassium (K), magnesium (Mg) and Cu were increased by VAM at site 1, and of leaf nitrogen (N) and K at site 2. These experiments demonstrate that VAM-fungi could be introduced into field nursery sites to improve growth and P uptake by H. brasiliensis. The relevance of VAM-fungi to H. brasiliensis seedling rootstock development and the influence of IMF in determining field responses is discussed.  相似文献

1. Our goal was to determine whether mycorrhizal infection of one generation of plants could influence the competitiveness of the subsequent generation.
2. We grew the offspring of mycorrhizal (M) and non-mycorrhizal (NM) Abutilon theophrasti plants together in dense populations in large boxes in a greenhouse.
3. Offspring of M plants were larger than offspring of NM plants. As the experiment progressed, the difference in size was magnified and self-thinning occurred.
4. Compared with offspring of NM plants, offspring of M plants had a twofold greater survival and collectively produced a total of nearly four times as many seeds.
5. We conclude that mycorrhizal infection of the parent generation can increase the competitive ability of the offspring.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal plants often have greater tolerance to drought than nonmycorrhizal plants. This study was conducted to determine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi inoculation on growth, grain yield and mineral acquisition of two winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars grown in the field under well-watered and water-stressed conditions. Wheat seeds were planted in furrows after treatment with or without the AM fungi Glomus mosseae or G. etunicatum. Roots were sampled at four growth stages (leaf, tillering, heading and grain-filling) to quantify AM fungi. There was negligible AM fungi colonization during winter months following seeding (leaf sampling in February), when soil temperature was low. During the spring, AM fungi colonization increased gradually. Mycorrhizal colonization was higher in well-watered plants colonized with AM fungi isolates than water-stressed plants. Plants inoculated with G. etunicatum generally had higher colonization than plants colonized with G. mosseae under both soil moisture conditions. Biomass and grain yields were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plots irrespective of soil moisture, and G. etunicatum inoculated plants generally had higher biomass and grain yields than those colonized by G. mosseae under either soil moisture condition. The mycorrhizal plants had higher shoot P and Fe concentrations than nonmycorrhizal plants at all samplings regardless of soil moisture conditions. The improved growth, yield and nutrient uptake in wheat plants reported here demonstrate the potential of mycorrhizal inoculation to reduce the effects of drought stress on wheat grown under field conditions in semiarid areas of the world.  相似文献

The influence of rhizosphere microorganisms and vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhiza on manganese (Mn) uptake in maize (Zea mays L. cv. Tau) plants was studied in pot experiments under controlled environmental conditions. The plants were grown for 7 weeks in sterilized calcareous soil in pots having separate compartments for growth of roots and of VA mycorrhizal fungal hyphae. The soil was left either uninoculated (control) or prior to planting was inoculated with rhizosphere microorganisms only (MO-VA) or with rhizosphere microorganisms together with a VA mycorrhizal fungus [Glomus mosseae (Nicol and Gerd.) Gerdemann and Trappe] (MO+VA). Mycorrhiza treatment did not affect shoot dry weight, but root dry weight was slightly inhibited in the MO+VA and MO-VA treatments compared with the uninoculated control. Concentrations of Mn in shoots decreased in the order MO-VA > MO+VA > control. In the rhizosphere soil, the total microbial population was higher in mycorrhizal (MO+VA) than nonmycorrhizal (MO-VA) treatments, but the proportion of Mn-reducing microbial populations was fivefold higher in the nonmycorrhizal treatment, suggesting substantial qualitative changes in rhizosphere microbial populations upon root infection with the mycorrhizal fungi. The most important microbial group taking part in the reduction of Mn was fluorescent Pseudomonas. Mycorrhizal treatment decreased not only the number of Mn reducers but also the release of Mn-solubilizing root exudates, which were collected by percolation from maize plants cultivated in plastic tubes filled with gravel quartz sand. Compared with mycorrhizal plants, the root exudates of nonmycorrhizal plants had two fold higher capacity for reduction of Mn. Therefore, changes in both rhizosphere microbial population and root exudation are probably responsible for the lower acquisition of Mn in mycorrhizal plants.  相似文献

Mycorrhizal fungus colonization of roots may modify plant metal acquisition and tolerance. In the present study, the contribution of the extraradical mycelium of an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus, Glomus mosseae (BEG 107), to the uptake of metal cations (Cu, Zn, Cd and Ni) by cucumber (Cucumis sativus) plants was determined. The influence of the amount of P supplied to the hyphae on the acquisition and partitioning of metal cations in the mycorrhizal plants was also investigated. Pots with three compartments were used to separate root and root-free hyphal growing zones. The shoot concentration of Cd and Ni was decreased in mycorrhizal plants compared to non-mycorrhizal plants. In contrast, shoot Zn and Cu concentrations were increased in mycorrhizal plants. High P supply to hyphae resulted in decreased root Cu concentrations and shoot Cd and Ni concentrations in mycorrhizal plants. These results confirm that some elements required for plant growth (P, Zn, Cu) are taken up by mycorrhizal hyphae and are then transported to the plants. Conversely, Cd and Ni were transported in much smaller amounts by hyphae to the plant, so that arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus colonization could partly protect plants from toxic effects of these elements. Selective uptake and transport of plant essential elements over non-essential elements by AM hyphae, increased growth of mycorrhizal plants, and metal accumulation in the root may all contribute to the successful growth of mycorrhizal plants on metal-rich substrates. These effects are stimulated when hyphae can access sufficient P in soil.  相似文献

The effects of the interaction between Pratylenchus vulnus and the endomycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices on growth and nutrition of Santa Lucia 64 cherry rootstock was studied under microplot conditions during one growing season. Fresh top weight, and stem diameter of mycorrhizal plants and high P treatments with and without P. vulnus were significantly higher than those of non-mycorrhizal plants. The lowest shoot length and fresh root weights were recorded in nematode inoculated plants in low P soil. Mycorrhizal infection did not affect the number of nematodes per gram of root in plants infected with P. vulnus. In the presence of the nematode, internal spore production by G. intraradices was significantly reduced. No nutrient deficiencies were detected through foliar analysis, although low levels of Ca, Mn and Fe were detected in nematode treatments. Mycorrhizal plants achieved the highest values for N, P, S, Fe, and Zn, whereas high P treatments increased absorption of Ca and Mn. Early mycorrhizal infection of Santa Lucia 64 cherry rootstock by G. intraradices confers increased growth capacity in the presence of P. vulnus.  相似文献

High variation in seed size, as is common among angiosperms, may be maintained in a plant species when several factors select for seed size. Variation may also result from differences among adult plants, such as nutrient and water availability or the amount of photosynthetic tissue. In a study of Sabal palmetto seed ecology I found high seed size variation both within- and among-palms, and investigated possible factors maintaining this variation. Seed size was positively correlated with the number of leaves on parent palms. Larger seeds produced more vigorous seedlings that had greater leaf length, area, and mass, and greater root mass. Caryobruchus gleditsiae (Bruchidae: Coleoptera), whose larvae develop within palm seeds, preferentially oviposited on larger seeds, which in turn produced larger beetle offspring. By choosing the largest seeds available, ovipositing beetles thus affect both the quantity and the quality of seeds available for recruitment. I conclude that because beetle predation selects against large seeds, while larger seeds promote seedling vigor, the maintenance of seed size variation may be an adaptation of S. palmetto promoting both seed escape from predators and seedling vigor.  相似文献

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis on health ofLinum usitatissimum infected by fungal pathogens were investigated exemplarily. Physiological and biochemical analyses were done to explain the mechanisms underlying the AM effects. AM plants showed increased resistance against the wilt pathogen (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.lini), the level of this effects depended on the plant cultivars which all showed the same level of root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). In contrary to that, AM plants were highly susceptible against the shoot pathogenOidium lini, but they suffered less than non-AM plants in terms of shoot fresh weight, CO2 assimilation and content of sucrose in shoot apex. This indicates that AM not only activates resistance mechanisms but also can induce tolerance against pathogens. The concentration of phytohormones such as auxin- and gibberellin-like substances were increased in shoots of AM plants. In roots the ethylene production was increased, too. Furthermore the content and composition of free sterols were highly altered in leaves of AM plants. Root infection by AMF caused an increased respiratory activity and a reduced degree of DNA methylation, but both modifications only occurred in infected root parts indicating an increasing gene activity. The presented results suggest that nearly all parts of a plant are influenced by AM but not in the same manner. In the case of mildewed linseed the effect of AM on plant health was impressing, it indicates that AM has an ability to induce tolerance.  相似文献

The influence of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae on the growth of seedlings of Caesalpinia eriostachys, Cordia alliodora, Ipomoea wolcottiana and Pithecellobium mangense was investigated in a greenhouse experiment conducted at the Biological Station of Chamela on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Dry biomass production, relative growth rate, root/shoot ratio and mycorrhizal dependency were quantified for 75-day-old seedlings. With the exception of the pioneer species I. wolcottiana, mycorrhizal infection resulted in increases in biomass production, relative growth rate and leaf area. The root/shoot ratios attained for the species, however, did not show a consistent trend with infection. Nevertheless, all species had root/shoot ratios below 1 with infection and only one, Cordia alliodora, had a ratio greater than 1 without infection. The two late successional species from the mature part of the forest, Caesalpinia eriostachys and P. mangense, showed a larger mycorrhizal dependency than the two associated with disturbed environments.
