Soil microfungi were studied in the Sokolov (Czech Republic) post‐mining dumps afforested with Alnus glutinosa and in the Lusatian (Germany) post‐mining dumps afforested with Pinus sylvestris or P. nigra. Microfungi were isolated using the soil dilution plate method. Soil microfungi communities of two chronosequences were compared by species composition, frequency of species occurrence, and colony forming units of fungi (CFU‐counts). Differences in species occurrence were determined. More species of entomopathogenic microfungi were found from the Sokolov post‐mining area in comparison with the Cottbus post‐mining area. Absidia glauca, A. cylindrospora, Penicillium glabrum, and P. janthinellum were the most frequently isolated species from the Cottbus post‐mining area, while A. glauca, Geomyces pannorum, and Trichoderma koningii predominated at the Sokolov post‐mining area.  相似文献

The diversity of fungal communities on three different historical monuments in the city of Vienna (Austria) was analyzed and compared to the fungal diversity of microfungi on rock in the original quarry located in a rural area (Zogelsdorf, Austria). The fungal strains isolated were characterized by morphology and the complete rock fungal community was identified based on molecular data, that is, by sequencing parts of the small ribosomal subunit (18S) and internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1). The genera Coniothyrium, Epicoccum and Phoma were found to be dominant {on} monument and rock surfaces. Additionally, black yeasts such as Exophiala species and microcolonial fungi like Sarcinomyces and Coniosporium which hitherto were regarded as typical rock inhabitants in semi-arid environments are frequently found on all rock surfaces in Vienna. The biodiversity of the fungi in the urban environment was much higher than on the same rock type in a rural environment, this difference can be attributed to the elevated organic pollution in the city.  相似文献

At the Diavik Waste Rock Project's mine-research site, the microbial colonization and oxidation of waste rock sulfide minerals are attenuated by the extreme freeze-thaw cycle of a permafrost environment. The closure design for the waste rock stockpile consists of a low-sulfide waste rock and low-permeability till, covering a relatively higher sulfide waste rock. This design was examined at the mine site through construction of experimental waste rock piles and active zone lysimeters with and without the till cover. Leachate from these experiments indicates variable pH and SO4 concentrations that correlate with sulfide content and the thermal moderating influence of the till cover. The till initially provided a moderated environment for the production of acid, growth of acidophilic Fe- and S-oxidizing bacteria, and enhanced weathering until wet up and freezing of the till and underlying waste rock as a permafrost. Greater sulfide oxidation was observed above the till cover because of greater exposure to the annual freeze-thaw cycle. An examination of the bacterial communities at the genus level indicates the prevalence of Pseudomonas, Rhodanobacter, Sideroxydans, and Thiobacillus in the waste rock. Pseudomonas spp. were dominant in the drier and more extreme temperature environment above the till cover, while Thiobacillus spp. were dominant in the more sulfide-rich, wetter/frozen environment below the till. A decreasing trend in Thiobacillus spp. from the exterior to the interior and an opposing trend in Acidithiobacillus spp. suggest greater acid generation deeper in the waste rock further from the extreme temperature variation of the tundra climate. The presence of the till cover moderated temperature variations, enhanced the initial rate of sulfide oxidation, and allowed for greater microbial diversity, but the freezing of the till cover and underlying waste rock drastically reduced sulfide oxidation and the generation of acid rock drainage. These results highlight the importance of temperature on microbially catalyzed acid production and our ability to use the extreme temperatures of the tundra climate to minimize potential environmental effects from mining through formation of waste rock permafrost.  相似文献

Aims and Background

The aim was to investigate the diversity and distribution of Glomeromycotan fungi forming arbuscular mycorrhizal associations (AMF) in undisturbed and disturbed habitats in the vicinity of Kakadu National Park in tropical Australia. This is a tropical region with a 7–9 month dry season and a monsoonal wet season. Complimentary methods of fungus detection were used to investigate the diversity and relative dominance of AMF at a regional scale.

Methods

Soils were sampled from 32 sites, representing eucalypt savanna woodlands, wetlands, sandstone escarpment, rainforest, and disturbed mine waste rock dumps (overburden or spoil). Populations of AMF were identified and quantified using spores from soil. Morphology patterns of fungi colonising bait plant roots were examined and isolates were obtained by four complimentary pot-culturing methods.

Results

Different methods of detecting fungi produced different answers about which AMF were most important in the tested soils. In particular, spore surveys apparently underestimated the importance of Glomus species and overestimated the activity of Acaulospora species with numerous small spores, while calculated spore biovolumes overestimated the importance of Scutellospora and Gigaspora species with large spores, relative to inoculum levels of these fungus categories measured in bioassays. Spore surveys revealed 15 species of fungi and 8 additional fungi were recovered from the same soil samples using pot-culture isolation methods. Pot-cultures were especially important for detecting Glomus species that had high inoculum levels, but rarely produced spores in soils. Spores of AMF increased in abundance as vegetation developed in mine habitats reaching a peak that was higher than in undisturbed plant communities. Spore numbers (but not biovolumes) were well correlated with bioassay measurements of inoculum levels.

Conclusions

Most AMF species were widespread, but several were restricted to disturbed habitats or wetland soils. Undisturbed sites had a substantially higher diversity of AMF than partially vegetated mine waste rock dumps. It is recommended that AMF population surveys should not be based entirely on spore occurrence data, to avoid overlooking important fungi that sporulate infrequently. These fungi could be detected by bioassays or pot culture isolation from soil. Major variations in the detectability of AMF correspond to different life history strategies and can mask variations in their abundance.  相似文献

Microfungi were isolated from soils, mosses, algae and lichens in the Windmill Islands region of Antarctica. From a total of 1,228 isolates, 22 genera were identified. The most frequently isolated fungi from mosses were Mycelia sterilia (47% of total isolates), Phoma spp. (18%), Penicillium spp. (11%), Chrysosporium spp. (7%) and Thelebolus microsporus (6%). Mycelia sterilia, Penicillium spp., Mortierella spp., Chrysosporium cf. pannorum and Thelebolus microsporus were also frequently isolated from algae. Fungal distribution and diversity were poor in samples of lichens, compared to samples from mosses and algae. The frequency of occurrence of microfungi was most often associated with strong biotic influence. There was a marked increase in fungal diversity in human-disturbed sites. Twelve taxa were restricted to soils from near the Australian Casey Station, suggesting significant introduction of fungi into this environment by human activities. Away from the station, fungal distribution appeared to be related to substrata and nutrient status rather than dispersal opportunities. Suggestions for future research and the need for constant monitoring to clarify the role of human disturbance on Antarctic fungi are discussed. Waste dumps generated by mining activities contain heavy metals that are dispersed into areas leading to significant environmental contamination. The objectives of this study were (i) to survey native plants and their associated AM fungal communities from waste soils in a Moroccan mine site and (ii) to follow Eucalyptus growth in soil collected from the waste-mine. AM spores from native plant species were collected from the mining site and the surrounding uncontaminated areas were multiplied and inoculated onto Eucalyptus camaldulensis. The results showed that (i) the native plant species recorded in the waste did not show an active metal uptake, (ii) the selected native plant species are associated with AM mycorrhizal fungi and (iii) the use of AM fungi adapted to these drastic conditions can improve the growth of the fast-growing tree, E. camaldulensis and its tolerance to high soil Cu content. In conclusion, it is suggested that in order to define efficient low-cost phytostabilization processes, the use of native resources (i.e., mixtures of native mycorrhizal fungi) in combination with fast-growing tree species such as Eucalyptus, could be used to optimize the establishment of a permanent cover plant in contaminated areas.  相似文献

For the Darién Province, an area larger than Jamaica in Eastern Panama, up to now only 19 species of fungi, mainly lichens and plant parasitic microfungi, have been known. Two general mycological forays including most major groups of fungi were carried out in this area for the first time. During 3 days mostly in secondary vegetation and 2 days in pristine forest, about 104 specimens of macro- and microfungi were collected, of which 85 were identified as 76 species of which all but one were new records for the Darién Province. As a result, knowledge on fungal taxa in that region has risen from 19 to 94, i.e. by a factor of five. Although common and easily-spotted species were preferred during collection, 16 (more than 20%) of the species identified were new for Panama, notably two species of Agaricales, Hygroaster nodulisporus and Leucopaxillus gracillimus, and four microfungi on plants, Cercosporella leucaenae, Coccomyces delta, Meliola bixae, and Stigmina anacardii. The records of the species are presented together with specimen data, references, and photos of selected species. As shown by this study, fungi in tropical Panama are highly diverse, mostly unknown, and further mycological field work is urgently needed because habitats are destroyed and fungi specific to them are lost forever.  相似文献

The sporadic growth of Cynodon dactylon was observed to occur directly on the surface of hard coal in dumps of the Witbank coal mining area of South Africa with the surface coal being broken down into a humic-like particulate material. Microorganism analysis of plants and rhizosphere material from the dumps revealed the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and the coal solubilising fungus, Neosartorya fischeri. Studies established to replicate the dump environment revealed increased coal degradation in the form of humic acid production and an increase in small size particles as a result of Cynodon dactylon growth in association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Neosartorya fischeri. Results suggest that interactions between Cynodon dactylon, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Neosartorya fischeri and other coal-degrading rhizosphere fungi could lead to the degradation of hard coal in situ and that the application of these organisms to discard dumps could be a novel method of coal dump rehabilitation.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper deals with vegetation establishment on waste dumps in the montane and submontane belts of the eastern Pyrenees, where submediterranean Quercus humilis forests, Pinus sylvestris forests and mesoxerophilous pastures make up most of the landscape; these are considered as target communities for reclamation. The waste consists of marl and lime regolith, very poor in nutrients and structure (Poch et al. 1989). The dumps were terraced in 1985–1986; some were left for spontaneous re‐colonization and others were reclaimed in various ways. In 1992 we took 36 vegetation samples on the dumps, based on the point quadrat procedure, to evaluate the colonization status and the differences between reclamation techniques. The samples were analysed on the basis of their species composition (ecological groups and multivariate analysis) and structural aspects (coverage, diversity, etc.). Reclamation treatment results varied widely, most of the dumps showing a low degree of naturalness. Colonizing vegetation ranged from a mixture of opportunist and stress‐resistant taxa, forming poorly covered surfaces on the dumps where colonization has been poor, to dense grasslands dominated by one (or a few) introduced competitive grass species, where reclamation procedures had been intensive. Sowing treatments, where pasture species were sown onto dumps, produced intermediate results, as resulting vegetation cover was similar to control plots and naturalness was low, but in a few cases they yielded more interesting swards, fairly dense and diverse, and including high numbers of spontaneous species. Choice of sown species and proximity to undisturbed vegetation accelerate succession.  相似文献

In all terrestrial ecosystems, testate amoebae (TA) encounter fungi. There are strong indications that both groups engage in multiple interactions, including mycophagy and decomposition of TA shells, processes which might be fundamental in nutrient cycling in certain ecosystems. Here, we present the results of an experiment focusing on interactions between TA and saprotrophic microfungi colonizing Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) litter needles. The needles were collected from a temperate pine forest and cultivated in damp chambers. Over a few weeks, melanized mycelium of Anavirga laxa Sutton started to grow out of some needles; simultaneously, the common forest-soil TA Phryganella acropodia (Hertwig and Lesser) Hopkinson reproduced and spread around the mycelium. We investigated whether a potential relationship between TA and saprotrophic microfungi exists by comparing the composition of TA communities on and around the needles and testing the spatial relationship between the A. laxa mycelium and P. acropodia shells in the experimental microcosm. Additionally, we asked whether P. acropodia utilized the A. laxa mycelium as a nutrient source and screened whether P. acropodia shells were colonized by the microfungi inhabiting the experimental microcosm. Our results indicate that saprotrophic microfungi may affect the composition of TA communities and their mycelium may affect distribution of TA individuals in pine litter. Our observations suggest that P. acropodia did not graze directly on A. laxa mycelium, but rather fed on its exudates or bacteria associated with the exudates. The fungus Pochonia bulbillosa (Gams & Malla) Zare & Gams was often found parasitising encysted shells or decomposing already dead individuals of P. acropodia. TA and pine litter microfungi engage in various direct and indirect interactions which are still poorly understood and deserve further investigation. Their elucidation will improve our knowledge on fundamental processes influencing coexistence of soil microflora and microfauna.  相似文献

Small-scale disturbances caused by animals often modify soil resource availability and may also affect plant attributes. Changes in the phenotype of plants growing on disturbed, nutrient-enriched microsites may influence the distribution and abundance of associated insects. We evaluated how the high nutrient availability generated by leaf-cutting ant nests in a Patagonian desert steppe may spread along the trophic chain, affecting the phenotype of two thistle species, the abundance of a specialist aphid and the composition of the associated assemblage of tending ants. Plants of the thistle species Carduus nutans and Onopordum acanthium growing in piles of waste material generated by leaf-cutting ant nests (i.e., refuse dumps) had more leaves, inflorescences and higher foliar nitrogen content than those in non-nest soils. Overall, plants in refuse dumps showed higher abundance of aphids than plants in non-nest soils, and aphid colonies were of greater size on O. acanthium plants than on C. nutans plants. However, only C. nutans plants showed an increase in aphid abundance when growing on refuse dumps. This resulted in a similar aphid load in both thistle species when growing on refuse dumps. Accordingly, only C. nutans showed an increase in the number of ant species attending aphids when growing on refuse dumps. The increase of soil fertility generated by leaf-cutting ant nests can affect aphid abundance and their tending ant assemblage through its effect on plant size and quality. However, the propagation of small-scale soil disturbances through the trophic chain may depend on the identity of the species involved.  相似文献

Seed treatment of Phaseolus mungo Roxb. with non-volatile metabolites of dominant seed fungi such as Chaetomium indicum Corda and Curvularia lunata (Walker) Boedijn and the antibiotic substances: chetomin, curvularin and brefeldin reduced the percent incidence of microfungi and bacteria but induced the Streptomyces sp. The antagonistic behaviour of seed microflora was assessed in vitro.  相似文献

The data needed to derive an accurate estimate of saprobic microfungi are insufficient, incomplete and contradictory. We therefore address issues that will ultimately reveal whether there are 1.5 million global fungal species, which is the generally accepted working estimate. Our data indicates that large numbers of fungi occur on host families, such as Musaceae, host genera such as Nothofagus and individual host species such as Eucalyptus globulus, and that fungi may be specific or recurrent on different plant groups. Recent studies have shown that fungal numbers on hosts may be larger than originally thought as saprobes are organ-specific/-recurrent and changes in fungal communities occur as substrata decays. Other issues, such as the impact of geography, of methodology and of taxonomy are also addressed. There is evidence that fungi on the same host at different locations also differs; site-specific factors and geographic distance may be more important than host/substrate in shaping fungal assemblages. Methodology impacts on estimates of species diversity with many more taxa observed using indirect isolation protocols as compared to direct isolations from leaves. Our understanding of fungal species numbers in speciose genera is important. In some fungal groups accepted species have been reduced to a few species, while in other groups many cryptic species are being uncovered. While we make a number of generalisations from the studies reported here, this review also highlights some of the limitations mycologists currently have to contend with. A large body of knowledge exists for certain groups of microfungi or for microfungi occurring on certain substrata/hosts. However, it is likely that we are drawing conclusions from data that are somewhat biased toward fungi and host/substrata that are of interest to human endeavours. The discrepancy between the numbers of fungi described from only one economically important genus, Eucalyptus, and all the other members of the Myrtaceae is but one example of this bias. By incorporating the large body of work that is already available and adding appropriate complementary studies, we can accelerate our understanding of microfungal diversity and this will eventually lead us to a realistic estimate of global fungal species numbers.  相似文献

Thrypticus truncatus is a candidate agent for biocontrol of waterhyacinth; the larvae of this diptera mine in the petioles and feed on the phloem in the vascular bundles. The mycobiota associated with T. truncatus and T. sagittatus mines was investigated during two surveys undertaken in the spring and autumn in the Delta of the Paraná River, Argentina. Isolations were made from the mines and larval feeding points, as well as from the larvae, following dissection of the petioles, and plated onto agar. Young and upper parts of the petioles without Thrypticus mines were used as controls. Twenty eight fungal species were isolated from the mines. Pestalotiopsis guepinii, Mucor attenuatus, Phoma tropica, Achlya americana, Fusarium avenaceum, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Clonostachys rosea, Epicoccum purpurascens, Plectosporium tabacinum, Alternaria alternata, and Acremonium sp. were the most common fungi associated with mines and feeding points. Cladosporium cladosporioides, Cytospora sp., Mucor attenuatus, and Phoma tropica were associated with the larval body. The list of fungi in mines was compared with bibliographic information to determine if the species are known pathogens on waterhyacinth or other plant species. This is the first study on mycobiota associated with T. truncatus and T. sagittatus mines in waterhyacinth petioles in Argentina.  相似文献

The nutrient‐rich organic waste generated by ants may affect plant reproductive success directly by enhancing fruit production but also indirectly, by affecting floral traits related with pollinator attraction. Understanding how these soil‐nutrient hot spots influence floral phenotype is relevant to plant–pollination interactions. We experimentally evaluated whether the addition of organic waste from refuse dumps of the leaf‐cutting ant Acromyrmex lobicornis (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Attini) alters floral traits associated with pollinator attraction in Eschscholzia californica (Ranunculales: Papaveraceae), an entomophilous herb. We analysed flower shape and size using geometric morphometric techniques in plants with and without the addition of refuse‐dumps soil, under greenhouse conditions. We also measured the duration of flowering season, days with new flowers, flower production and floral display size. Plants growing in refuse‐dumps soil showed higher flower shape diversity than those in control soil. Moreover, plants in refuse‐dumps soil showed bigger flower and floral display size, longer flowering season, higher number of flowering days and flower production. As all these variables may potentially increase pollinator visits, plants in refuse‐dumps soil might increase their fitness through enhanced attraction. Our work describes how organic waste from ant nests may enhance floral traits involved in floral attraction, illustrating a novel way of how ants may indirectly benefit plants.  相似文献

There are many publications about the microfungi, but only few papers on the higher fungi of Turkey.Pilat (1932) is the first investigator of Turkish larger fungi as far as the author is aware from the literatures. He has found 68 species of fungi from four different families. SecondZeybek's work is about one species ofMorchella that was found in the Western part of Anatolia. We have identified 100 higher fungi from the 10 different families in the present work. Most of the identified species were collected in the vicinities of Izmir and Istanbul within the years of 1968 and 1971. The list of higher fungi species which we have found is below according to the families.  相似文献

Rock varnish is a darkly pigmented coating rich in manganese oxides. Though microbes inhabit varnish deposits, it is unclear whether they are involved in varnish formation. The fungal communities of rock varnish and adjacent rock sites with no visible varnish deposits were examined. Microcolonial fungi were identified at all sampling sites, and were associated with manganese oxides in patches of incipient varnish at non-varnish sites. Fungi were closely related to manganese-oxidizing genera and seventeen isolates oxidized manganese in culture, producing six distinct manganese-oxide morphologies. Our results indicate that microcolonial fungi may play a crucial role in rock varnish formation. Supplemental materials are available for this article. Saprotrophic microfungi associated with roots of Calamagrostis epigeios growing in industrial waste contaminated with high concentrations of heavy metals (manganese, iron, zinc) were isolated on three different media. The isolates were obtained from three plots colonized by plant cenoses, representing three different succession series of plant cover: initial, intermediate, and advanced. A total of 60 species of saprotrophic microfungi were found in the roots during three samplings. In addition, unidentified dark and white sterile mycelia were frequently isolated. Trichoderma koningii was frequent in the roots formed under the advanced phytocenose. The abundance of dark sterile mycelium gradually decreased with progressing succession of the plant cover. Chrysosporium merdarium was rarely observed in the roots under the intermediate and advanced plant cenoses. Multivariate redundancy analysis showed that the effect of succession stage of phytocenoses on incidence of saprotrophic microfungi in mycocenoses present in roots was statistically significant. When the similarity of root mycocenoses of the three plots was studied using the similarity coefficients, the results proved that the similarities between the initial and intermediate or intermediate and advanced mycocenoses were higher than that between the initial and advanced mycocenoses. This corresponds to a different speed of succession of the mycocenoses. The results suggest that the dark sterile mycelia, abundant at slowly developing plots, play a dominant role during the first stages of succession where the plant cover is poor.  相似文献

Association-analyses were made of montane grasslands (patanas) of Sri Lanka using higher plant and soil microfungal data. Stand classifications derived from higher plants and microfungi were remarkably parallel and were in complete agreement with the tentative division of patanas into five major types. The ecological distinctiveness of the five patanas was further evident from the phytosociological affinities of species indicated by classifications of higher plants and microfungi. Multivariate analyses of higher plants and fungi from the same ecosystem are regarded as alternative approaches which provide more information together than alone.  相似文献
