The occurrence and ecology of two poorly known planktonic diatoms, Melosira distans var. tenella (Nyg.) M.-B. Florin and Eunotia zasuminensis (Cabejsz.) Körner in central Finland is discussed. Both species have their maximum in late summer when water temperature is > 15°C and they prefer slightly acid water (pH < 7), low conductivity (less than 4 mS/m) and a moderate degree of dystrophy with C.O.D. 10–20 mg O2/l and water colour 60–120 mg Pt/1. Melosira distans var. tenella was found in ca. 80% of the central Finnish lakes studied, but it is not reported in previously published papers. Eunotia zasuminensis is rarer, but is, however, recorded in at least 22 lakes in central Finland.  相似文献

Ten myxosporean species belonging to three families were found in roach, Rutilus rutilus (Linnaeus), obtained in 1985 and 1986 from four lakes in central Finland which are connected to each other, but differ in water quality. One of the lakes is polluted by paper and pulp mill effluent, two are eutrophic and one is oligotrophic and still in its natural state. Eight species were found in all the lakes. The most common species were Myxidium rhodei Léger, 1905, Myxobolus muelleri Bütschli, 1882 and Myxobolus pseudodispar Gorbunova, 1936 with prevalences varying between 66–80, 16–31 and 32–59%, respectively, in the four lakes. The largest difference in myxosporean prevalence between lakes was found in the case of M. pseudodispar infection, which was highly significantly lower in the polluted lake. The locations of the myxosporean species in the tissues of the fish were found to be species-specific. M. rhodei and M. muelleri being prevalent in the kidney and M. pseudodispar in the muscles.
No clear seasonal variation was found but a tendency for a decrease in infection with increasing age was recorded in the case of M. rhodei and M. pseudodispar .  相似文献

How many fish populations in Finland are affected by acid precipitation?   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Synopsis The number of fish populations affected or lost from small lakes in southern and central Finland due to acid precipitation is estimated. Tolerance limits (pH and labile aluminum) of common fish species were obtained from a fish status survey of 80 lakes. These tolerance values were used to estimate the proportion of affected lakes from the water chemistry data of 783 statistically selected lakes. The proportion of anthropogenically acidified lakes was estimated by calculating pre-acidification pH and aluminum concentrations of the lakes, using a steady-state model based on water chemistry. The number of fish populations for which acidification has affected growth or population structure was estimated at between 2200 and 4400. Out of these, the number of fish populations that have disappeared due to acid precipitation would be about 1000–2000. Almost 60% of the affected or lost populations are roach, Rutilus rutilus, the most sensitive of the common fish species in small lakes in southern and central Finland. Less than 15% of the damaged population is European perch, Perca fluviatilis, the most common species. This is due to the substantially higher tolerance of perch to acidified water in comparison with roach.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Potential phosphatase activity and phytoplankton from several lakes of different character were compared in order to evaluate the importance of lake water pH and phytoplankton composition for the activity and pH optimum of lake water phosphatases.
2. In oligotrophic lakes, in which phytoplankton biomass was most often dominated by Ochromonadaceae spp., optimum phosphate activity was found at pH values <6. In eutrophic lakes, where species of Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae dominated the phytoplankton biomass, optimum phosphatase activity was found at pH 7.5 or 8.5.
3. The pH optimum of phosphatase activity often differed from the corresponding lake water pH.
4. Experimental variation in phosphorus availability resulted in predictable changes in phosphatase activity. However, specific phosphatase activity, calculated per biomass of phytoplankton, was dependent on plankton species composition.  相似文献

The occurrence of preimaginal stages of Diptera (excluding Chironomidae and Simuliidae) in the Tatra Mountain lakes, their inlets and outlets, and the influence of acidification on the presence of these taxa were assessed. At 21 sites, 18 Diptera taxa were recorded in 2000 and 2001. The most frequent were Dicranota sp. (73%), Pedicia (C.)rivosa (50%) and Wiedemannia sp. (14%). Diptera were ordinated by RDA; relationships between taxa and environmental variables were significantly determined by temperature and habitat characteristics (altitude, habitat, alkalinity, Ca2+, pH, temperature, conductivity). The RDA diagram confirmed the existence of four Diptera assemblage groups corresponding with four habitat types. Group 1 — alpine and subalpine oligotrophic lakes at higher altitudes threatened by acidification, with the acid tolerant taxa Tipula rufina, T. alpium, Dicranota sp. and Rhypholophus sp. Group 2 — subalpine oligotrophic lakes not threatened by acidification with the acid sensitive taxa Wiedemannia sp., Hemerodromia sp., Tipula (S.) benesignata, Orimarga sp., Chionea sp., Pedicia (C.) rivosa and Bazarella subneglecta which prefer higher temperature. Group 3 — subalpine oligotrophic lakes, with the acid sensitive species Berdeniella illiesi, which prefers cold water. Group 4 — outlets of submontane oligotrophic lakes with characteristic taxa Tricyphona sp. and Tipula goriziensis. Acidified alpine and subalpine Tatra lakes are situated mostly at higher altitudes (1705–2145 m. a.s.l.) and have specific taxonomic composition.  相似文献

Chrysophyte (mallomonadacean) scales were examined from the surface sediments of 18 lakes from eastern Finland, representing a wide range of limnological characteristics. Scales were always well preserved and 23 taxa were observed. The relative frequencies of the dominant taxa were plotted relative to the average autumn lakewater pH. The distribution of chrysophyte species in the calibration set was ordinated by means of DECORANA analysis. The occurrence of these species appeared to be closely related to pH, colour and nutrients in the ordinated lake groups. Chrysophyte scales are potentially useful environmental and paleolimnological indicators in eastern Finland.  相似文献

Twenty lakes in the Matamek and nearby watersheds were sampled in the summer of 1983 for water chemistry and surficial sediments. Thirty-two physical and chemical variables, including pH, alkalinity, cations and metal concentrations were measured on samples from the epilimnion and hypolimnion of each lake. In three lakes, two to four replicate cores were collected to estimate spatial variability of the sediment flora.All lakes were acidic (pH 4.59 to 5.80), highly colored and poorly buffered. Aluminum and magnesium concentrations reached 494 and 70 µg l-1, respectively. The pH of the lakes appears to be declining, as indicated by a comparison of our results with those from a survey done in 1970. An empirical chemical model based on the alkalinity/sulfate ratio and the regression of pH on calcium also indicated that these lakes may be undergoing acidification.Analyses of the diatom flora of the surficial sediments showed strong dominance of 6 species that cooccurred with a large number of rare species (in all, 229 taxa were found). Variability among samples within a lake was as high as among lakes. Calculation of Nygaard's alpha index for each sample and the regression of its log-transformed value on surface pH yielded a relationship that was significantly from other published models. The regression model was applied to a down-core analysis of the diatom flora of the sediments of two lakes. Although the large confidence intervals on pH values predicted by the model obscured any evidence of pH change with sediment depth, there was a significant increase of acidophilous and a decrease of circumneutral species over time, suggesting that a change in the flora, possibly correlated with pH, is taking place.In making comparisons among lakes, the surficial-sediment flora did not provide clear evidence of a relationship with the pH of surface water. Indices computed from the surficial-sediment flora are apparently insensitive to differences in pH over a narrow range, particularly when the lakes being compared are similar chemically. Nygaard's alpha index is shown to be unduly sensitive to outliers. The currently accepted assumption of a progressive linear change in communities may be inadequate for the quantification of acidification processes. Other models, derived from catastrophe theory, may prove more fruitful.  相似文献

于1998—2000在西双版纳国家级自然保护区尚勇子保护区的自然生境中,通过对亚洲象取食植物调查和粪便分析,了解亚洲象的食物组成与取食习性。结果显示,野外跟踪调查共记录有106种植物被亚洲象所取食。其中有83种出现在象的粪便中,这些种类分别属于:禾本科8种(10.0%)、桑科7种(9.9%)、蝶形花科4种(8.4%)、五加科3种(6.6%)、葡萄科3种(5.7%)、夹竹桃科3种(4.6%)、芭蕉科1种(4.2%)、姜科3种(3.7%)、紫金牛科3种(3.6%)、蔷薇科3种(3.6%)、大戟科5种(3.3%)、榆科2种(3.O%)、含羞草科4种(2.9%)13个植物科。根据食物中所占的比率,桑科的榕属(Ficus)、禾本科的竹类(Bambusoideae)、小果野芭蕉(Musa acuminate)和莠竹(Microstegium ciliatum)是亚洲象的主要食物资源。在觅食过程中,亚洲象取食包括乔木、藤本灌木和草本等各种生活型的植物,其中先锋种所占比率(59%)高于后续种;选择性啃食枝条的植物种类(77种)高于牧草式取食的种类(6种)。亚洲象取食植物种类的月变化与月平均温度和月降雨量成负相关,旱季取食植物种类高于雨季。本研究对制定保护区野生动物管理策略,以及解决保护区周边日趋恶化的人象矛盾,具有一定的参考价值。  相似文献

A total of 139 surface water samples from seven lakes and 15 rivers in southwestern Finland were analyzed during five consecutive seasons from autumn 2000 to autumn 2001 for the presence of various enteropathogens (Campylobacter spp., Giardia spp., Cryptosporidium spp., and noroviruses) and fecal indicators (thermotolerant coliforms, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and F-RNA bacteriophages) and for physicochemical parameters (turbidity and temperature); this was the first such systematic study. Altogether, 41.0% (57 of 139) of the samples were positive for at least one of the pathogens; 17.3% were positive for Campylobacter spp. (45.8% of the positive samples contained Campylobacter jejuni, 25.0% contained Campylobacter lari, 4.2% contained Campylobacter coli, and 25.0% contained Campylobacter isolates that were not identified), 13.7% were positive for Giardia spp., 10.1% were positive for Cryptosporidium spp., and 9.4% were positive for noroviruses (23.0% of the positive samples contained genogroup I and 77.0% contained genogroup II). The samples were positive for enteropathogens significantly (P < 0.05) less frequently during the winter season than during the other sampling seasons. No significant differences in the prevalence of enteropathogens were found when rivers and lakes were compared. The presence of thermotolerant coliforms, E. coli, and C. perfringens had significant bivariate nonparametric Spearman's rank order correlation coefficients (P < 0.001) with samples that were positive for one or more of the pathogens analyzed. The absence of these indicators in a logistic regression model was found to have significant predictive value (odds ratios, 1.15 x 10(8), 7.57, and 2.74, respectively; P < 0.05) for a sample that was negative for the pathogens analyzed. There were no significant correlations between counts or count levels for thermotolerant coliforms or E. coli or the presence of F-RNA phages and pathogens in the samples analyzed.  相似文献

Calcium (Ca) concentrations of many softwater lakes on the Canadian Shield have been in decline for decades as a response primarily to regional acid deposition and repeated cycles of forest harvesting. These Ca declines are of ecological interest, as many lakes have fallen to Ca levels detrimental to the fitness of ecologically important Ca-rich cladoceran taxa such as Daphnia pulex. However, distinguishing the impacts of reduced Ca from acidification (i.e., decreasing pH) on Ca-demanding fauna has proven difficult due to strong correlations between pH and Ca in softwater lakes. Here, we examine cladoceran sedimentary assemblages from low Ca lakes (mean present-day Ca < 2.0 mg l?1) in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) of Ontario, Canada, where Ca concentrations have declined since the 1980s, despite being closed to forestry and remote from (i.e., not downwind of) major sources of acid deposition. Differences between present-day and pre-industrial cladoceran assemblages were greatest among planktonic taxa, including Bosmina spp. and Holopedium glacialis. However, daphniid remains were present in only three of the ten study lakes with minimal directional trends. Overall, in these ELA lakes, daphniid abundance was low historically, and impacts possibly attributable to Ca declines have been obscured by the effects of regional climate warming.  相似文献

The composition of the diet and the foraging ecology of the Asian elephant in its natural habitat were studied from 1998 to 2000 in the Shangyong National Natural Reserve located at Xishuangbanna, China, using field observation and dung analysis. A total of 106 plant species were recorded as being eaten by Asian elephants, 83 of which were identified in the elephants' dung. The plant families that contributed to a major proportion of the elephants' diet in the study area were: Gramineae (8 spp., 10.0%), Moraceae (7 spp., 9.9%), Papilionaceae (4 spp., 8.4%), Araliaceae (3 spp., 6.6%), Vitaceae (3 spp., 5.7%), Apocynaceae (3 spp., 4.6%), Musaceae (1 spp., 4.2%), Zingiberaceae (3 spp., 3.7%), Myrsinaceae (3 spp., 3.6%), Rosaceae (3 spp., 3.6%), Euphorbiaceae (5 spp., 3.3%), Ulmaceae (2 spp., 3.0%) and Mimosaceae (4 spp., 2.9%). The most important plants in the elephants' diet were Ficus spp. (Moraceae, 9.0%), Dendrocalamus spp. (Gramineae, 4.5%), Musa acuminata (Musaceae, 4.2%), Microstegium ciliatum (Gramineae, 3.5%) and Amalocalyx yunnanensis (Apocynaceae, 3.1%). Asian elephants consumed a variety of plants in terms of life forms, including trees, vines, shrubs and herbs. Early successional plant species constitute a higher proportion of the diet than late successional plants (42 spp. taking 59% vs. 32 spp. taking 37%). Browsing species accounted for a larger proportion of the diet compared to grazing species (77 spp. taking 91% vs. 6 spp. taking 9%). The number of plant taxa (species, genus, family) in elephants' diet each month negatively correlated with monthly rainfall and mean temperature. The study may help to develop proper strategies for wildlife management especially with regard to the human-elephant conflict, which is now a serious issue in the conservation of Asian elephants in this area.  相似文献

The abundance and species composition of phytoplankton communities were studied rapidly following the spring ice-melt in 54 small Finnish lakes that form a unique mosaic of water bodies. Phytoplankton biomass and cell density varied among the study lakes with a factor 100 between the lowest and highest values. Highest biomass and densities of phytoplankton characterized small ( < 0.05 km2) lakes with moderate or high water colour (> 80 mg Pt l–1). In contrast, biomass was low in clear-water lakes and lakes where water throughflow was strong. Typically one species dominated most phytoplankton communities, and usually comprised up to about 45% of the total phytoplankton biomass. Two-thirds of the 103 taxa observed were Chrysophyceans and Chlorophyceans. The most common taxa wereChlamydomonas spp. (Chlorophyceae) andCryptomonas ovata (Cryptophyceae).  相似文献

A wide range of potentially pathogenic species of Gram-negative bacteria were far more resistant to extreme acidity (pH 2.0–3.5) when cultured at pH 5.0 (habituated to acid) than after pH 7.0 culture. The differences were particularly great for Citrobacter spp., Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. and for Vibrio parahaemolyticus ; substantial habituation was also observed for Proteus mirabilis and Aeromonas formicans but the effect was less marked for Serratia marcescens and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus . Growth at pH 5.0 was substantially poorer than at pH 7.0 for most of the above species and also for Salmonella typhimurium and Salm. enteritidis but phosphate markedly enhanced growth at pH 5.0 for many of these species without affecting growth at pH 7.0.  相似文献

The results of a study of littoral chironomid communities from 89 lakes in the Alps are presented. The lakes are located on the northern and southern sides of the Alps from the western Bernese to the eastern Julian Alps. Due to the different origins of the data set here considered, different sampling years and sampling methodologies were adopted. All of the lakes were sampled during the ice-free season, but 79/89 lakes were sampled mainly in autumn 2000, while for a few of them the sample dated back to 1996 or the early 90s. Samples were taken by kicking the different substrata or a stretch of lakeshore (10–30 m) for at least 2–5 min with a standard net and were then preserved in alcohol. Larvae and pupal exuviae were sampled by skimming the lake surface with the same net, to extend identification to species level. Notwithstanding the large altitudinal gradient, almost all of the lakes are situated above the timberline, and show a wide range of morphological (depth, watershed and lake area) and chemical characteristics. Chironomids were the most abundant insects represented in these lakes, with highest abundances at pH between 6.0 and 7.5. In particular, Orthocladiinae and Chironominae were the two subfamilies with the widest distribution. Altitude and temperature played an important role in determining their distribution, the higher altitudes were dominated by the former, whereas the latter were more numerous in lower lakes. The prevalence of Orthocladiinae and Tanytarsini at high altitudes was regarded as a general pattern of taxonomic composition in harsh climatic areas. A reverse condition occurred only in the Julian Alps, where Tanytarsini dominate, followed by Tanypodinae and rare Orthocladiinae. Although our results demonstrated that the composition of chironomid assemblages was also determined by pH, the pattern was unbalanced. Due to the fact that no cases of strong water acidification were present, taxa restricted to very low pH were poorly represented (only three taxa—Limnophyes, Endochironomus and Orthocladius (O.) spp.) compared with circumneutral (8) and alkaline (14) taxa, which occurred in slightly acid and non-acidified soft water lakes. As regard conductivity and altitude, we found that almost all the taxa present at higher pH were contemporary present at conductivity higher than 100 μeq l−1 and altitude lower than 2100 m a.s.l. At species level, Pseudodiamesa branickii, Corynoneura arctica, Heterotrissocladius marcidus and Paratanytarsus austriacus resulted to be the most ubiquitous and abundant species in the Alps. When the west to east distribution of taxa was taken into account, Chironomini (particularly the genera Chironomus and Dicrotendipes) and Tanypodinae (Larsia and Paramerina) were more typical of the eastern lakes (JA). They may be better indicators of more alkaline waters. Assembling all the existing data and presenting a comprehensive panorama of lake-littoral chironomid taxa of the Alps was one of the aims of this paper. Further monitoring, but also harmonization of the sampling methodologies and taxonomical identification including inter-calibration exercises among laboratories are recommended, to provide reliable basis and more knowledge for future studies of comparative biogeography, and to preserve these environments where global climatic changes may cause abrupt shifts in the faunal assemblages with a loss of taxa typical of these mountainous areas.  相似文献

It is important that legislation on water quality issues of freshwaters is not in conflict with nature conservation purposes. So far, it is however unknown how the assessment of ecological status according to for example the Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Community relates to the status of lakes according to the Habitat Directive (HD) or to national environmental objectives including, e.g., the protection of important wetland areas and red-listed species. We used lake macrophyte classification schemes of Norway, Sweden, and Finland and a total of 1,014 lakes to evaluate the possible conflict between these directives and national legislation. The classification schemes represent mainly trophic indices penalizing lakes with elevated phosphorous concentrations. In general, high ecological status according to the WFD did not mean high number of red-listed species or high status according to the HD or other national environmental objectives. In Sweden 78%, in Norway 47%, and in Finland 29% of lakes with red-listed species were classified as lakes of moderate or worse ecological status based on the macrophyte classification scheme. These lakes thus did not fulfill the demands of the WFD. Restoration of surface water toward fulfilling the demands requires in practice a reduction of the trophic status. This might potentially result in for example the loss of red-listed species. To avoid such potential conflicts, we primarily suggest revising the national quality assessment systems toward implicitly incorporating nature conservation aspects, e.g., the number of red-listed species in a multi-metric assessment system.  相似文献

Pike growth was generally slower in small Finnish lakes than has been reported from large lakes or brackish coastal waters. Growth was unrelated to pH, alkalinity, COD, or conductivity of the water, but length of 1–2-year-old pike correlated positively with water colour (i.e. humic content), nitrogen content, and phosphorus content. These water properties also correlated with each other. Growth of 1–2-year-old pike was negatively correlated with lake area in lakes smaller than 20 ha.
In lakes with a strong roach population or without ruffe the 0 group pike grew faster than in lakes without roach or with ruffe. The growth of pike aged 1–4 years in two very acid and practically fishless lakes did not differ clearly from the rest of the lakes, although the pike were forced to forage for abundant acid resistant invertebrates like dragonfly nymphs (Odonata) or Asellus aquatlcus .
The results of this work support earlier studies where the growth rate above all depends on water temperature and food availability. Acidity was not shown to affect the growth rate of pike.  相似文献

The general model of seasonal phytoplankton succession in temperate lakes suggests that winter phytoplankton growth is minimal under ice-cover. However, some studies have found diverse phytoplankton communities during winter. The primary objectives of this study were to determine the species composition and the changes in the winter phytoplankton community structure under the ice. For 2 consecutive winters, phytoplankton samples were collected under ice-cover at 4 sites on 3 lakes in Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), near Pingree, North Dakota. Ninety taxa were identified and enumerated. Densities of several of these taxa frequently exceeded 106 cells l–1. The winter phytoplankton communities in these lakes were dominated by flagellates, principally cryptomonads, a synurophyte (Synura uvella), small chrysophytes (Chrysococcus spp., Kephyrion spp.) and a dinoflagellate (Peridinium aciculiferum), as well as non-flagellate microchlorophytes (Monoraphidium spp., Ankistrodesmus spp., and Pseudodictyosphaerium sp.), a cyanobacterium (Gloeocapsa aeruginosa) and centric diatoms (Stephanodiscus minutulus, S. parvus and Cyclotella meneghiniana).  相似文献

Benthic aquatic insects were collected from rocky nearshore areas (< 1 m deep) of 17 lakes near Sudbury, Ontario, with a pH range of 4.7–7.3 and a size range of less than 10 ha to over 10,000 ha. These insect communities were composed of taxa common to lake soft-sediments and streams. Direct and indirect effects of lake acidity appeared to be major controls on the structure of these communities, implying that several factors may be involved in restructuring during acidification or recovery. Declines in abundances of several taxa of Ephemeroptera at pH below 5.5 were attributable to acid toxicity, while increases in the abundances of Odonata and Diptera at pH below 5.5 were associated with the absence of fish predators and other indirect effects of acidity. The communities of two experimentally neutralized lakes restructured rapidly within 5 years, approaching but not achieving community structures typical of our near-neutral survey lakes. Neutralization led to recolonization or increased abundance of the acid-sensitive mayfly, Stenacron interpunctatum , and the dragonfly, Boyeria grafiana ; however, recolonization by other taxa expected to be present in near-neutral lakes ( Stenonema femoratum, Eurylophella, and Basiaeshna janata ) was not observed. Consistent with results for the survey lakes, declines in the abundances of the dragonflies Aeshna interrupta, Aeshna eremita , and Leucorrhinia glacialis in the neutralized lakes were associated with reintroductions of Salvelinus fontinalis (aurora trout) and increased fish predation pressure, while reduced abundances of the dipterans Ceratopogonidae, Psectrocladius , and Stackelbergina may be related to indirect effects of acidity other than fish predation. Although community composition varied greatly across the acidity gradient, total species richness and abundance were not correlated with lake chemistry or number of fish species.  相似文献

Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) populations are often sympatric in the Great Plains region of the U.S.A. and portions of Canada; however, very little attention has been given to potential interactions between these species for available resources, especially during the early life stages. Relationships between age-0 bluegill and yellow perch growth and relative abundance were explored across multiple lakes and years within the Nebraska Sandhill region, USA. In addition, four habitat patch types (open water, Phragmites spp., Typha spp., Scirpus spp.) were sampled for age-0 bluegill and yellow perch, and food habits were examined for each species during August, September, and October of 2009 in one of these lakes. Age-0 yellow perch growth was negatively related to age-0 bluegill relative abundance across a spatiotemporal scale. Age-0 bluegill and yellow perch exhibited similar habitat use (moderate–high overlap), but generally consumed different important and dominant prey taxa (bluegill consumed both macroinvertebrates—56?% and zooplankton—44?%, while yellow perch consumed more zooplankton—66?%), which resulted in low overall diet overlap between species. Previous research indicates that age-0 yellow perch diet ontogeny often results in feeding predominately on macroinvertebrates and positively selecting them (and avoiding zooplankton prey) at sizes observed in our study.
