Abstract The outer membrane (OM) structure of Nitrosospira sp. X101 was studied by different electron microscopic techniques and SDS-PAGE. A crystalline outer membrane protein was visible in freeze-etched cells, occasionally seen also in the thin sectioned cells, but was difficult to see in a negatively-stained preparation. The lattice probably consists of large globular protein subunits with a hexagonal arrangement. The molecular weights of the major proteins in the cell envelope are 35 kDa, 40 kDa and 42 kDa.  相似文献

The effects of 4-weeks ethanol application (20% ethanol, w/w, 2 g X kg-1 on the alcohol oxidizing systems and gluconeogenic enzyme activities of the liver in guinea pigs kept in the cold (+4 degrees C) and at room temperature (+20 degrees C) were studied. The controls were guinea pigs reared at room temperature or in a cold environment without ethanol. The study showed a significant increase (1.5-fold) in liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 after chronic ethanol treatment at room temperature, but not in a cold environment. Microsomal NADPH oxidase activity did not significantly change in any group. Ethanol treatment in a cold environment resulted in a significant increase in liver mitochondrial cytochromes, aa3 and c+c1, and at room temperature in cyt aa3. The activities of total liver homogenate alcohol dehydrogenase or catalase did not change after chronic ethanol treatment. The activity of liver fructose-1.6-diphosphatase showed a significant ethanol induced decrease at room temperature, an effect not observed in the cold environment. Ethanol increased glucose-6-phosphatase activity in the cold, but not at room temperature. In conclusion, the stimulation of liver mitochondrial cytochromes and microsomal cyt P-450 as a consequence of chronic ethanol treatment indicated an increased oxidation capacity for ethanol. The stimulation of glucose-6-phosphatase in a cold environment might be responsible for increasing glucose for heat production after chronic ethanol treatment in cold adapted animals.  相似文献

Interest in climate change effects on groundwater has increased dramatically during the last decade. The mechanisms of climate‐related groundwater depletion have been thoroughly reviewed, but the influence of global warming on groundwater‐dependent ecosystems (GDEs) remains poorly known. Here we report long‐term water temperature trends in 66 northern European cold‐water springs. A vast majority of the springs (82%) exhibited a significant increase in water temperature during 1968–2012. Mean spring water temperatures were closely related to regional air temperature and global radiative forcing of the corresponding year. Based on three alternative climate scenarios representing low (RCP2.6), intermediate (RCP6) and high‐emission scenarios (RCP8.5), we estimate that increase in mean spring water temperature in the region is likely to range from 0.67 °C (RCP2.6) to 5.94 °C (RCP8.5) by 2086. According to the worst‐case scenario, water temperature of these originally cold‐water ecosystems (regional mean in the late 1970s: 4.7 °C) may exceed 12 °C by the end of this century. We used bryophyte and macroinvertebrate species data from Finnish springs and spring‐fed streams to assess ecological impacts of the predicted warming. An increase in spring water temperature by several degrees will likely have substantial biodiversity impacts, causing regional extinction of native, cold‐stenothermal spring specialists, whereas species diversity of headwater generalists is likely to increase. Even a slight (by 1 °C) increase in water temperature may eliminate endemic spring species, thus altering bryophyte and macroinvertebrate assemblages of spring‐fed streams. Climate change‐induced warming of northern regions may thus alter species composition of the spring biota and cause regional homogenization of biodiversity in headwater ecosystems.  相似文献

Some insectivorous birds orient towards insect‐defoliated trees even when they do not see the foliar damage or the herbivores. There are, however, only a few studies that have examined the mechanisms behind this foraging behaviour. Previous studies suggest that birds can use olfactory foraging cues (e.g. volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by defoliated plants), indirect visual cues or a combination of the two sensory cues. VOCs from insect‐defoliated plants are known to attract natural enemies of herbivores, and researchers have hypothesized that VOCs could also act as olfactory foraging cues for birds. We conducted three experiments across a range of spatial scales to test this hypothesis. In each experiment, birds were presented with olfactory cues and their behavioural responses or foraging outcomes were observed. In the first experiment, two different VOC blends, designed to simulate the volatile emissions of mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. czerepanovii) after defoliation by autumnal moth (Epirrita autumnata) larvae, were used in behavioural experiments in aviaries with pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca). The second experiment was a field‐based trial of bird foraging efficiency; the same VOC blends were applied to mountain birches, silver birches (B. pendula) and European white birches (B. pubescens) with plasticine larvae attached to the trees to serve as artificial prey for birds and provide a means to monitor predation rate. In the third experiment, the attractiveness of silver birch saplings defoliated by autumnal moth larvae versus intact controls was tested with great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) in an aviary. Birds did not orient towards either artificial or real trees with VOC supplements or towards herbivore‐damaged saplings when these saplings and undamaged alternatives were hidden from view. These findings do not support the hypothesis that olfactory foraging cues are necessary in the attraction of birds to herbivore‐damaged trees.  相似文献

Material consisting of 157 accessions of 69 Finnish Taraxacum agamospecies, representing 7 sections, was grown in an experimental field for comparison of certain botanical and nutritional characteristics. This paper gives the collecting data as well as cytological and reproductive characteristics of the material. The largest section Taraxacum (Vulgariu ) was represented by 60 agamospecies, 59 of them triploid (2n = 24) and one tetraploid (T. penicilliforme , 2n = 32). The tetraploid and 37 triploids were chromosome counted for the first time. The diploid sexual species T. obtusilobum from Sweden was included for comparison. Other sections consisted of 3 triploids and 6 tetraploids, 3 tetraploid species of the section Erythrosperma being chromosome counted for the first time. Seedlings with deviating numbers were occasionally found. A banding technique of the chromosomes was developed but it did not allow the exact identification of other than the satellite chromosomes. Species-specific features were found in the flowering phenology and in several pollen characteristics (stainability, mean and variability of the size). There were indications of genetic variation within certain agamospecies in pollen characteristics. Isolated and emasculated (mostly only isolated) flower heads gave mostly a full seed set, which indicates obligate, autonomous agamospermy. Lower seed sets of T. adami, T. dahlstedtii and T. hamatiforme in isolation may be a sign of facultative apomixis in these species, requiring further study.  相似文献

Several deciduous woody plant species produce anthocyanins during leaf development in spring and again during leaf senescence in autumn. The leaves of Betula pendula Roth (silver birch) commonly exhibit transient reddening in juvenile leaves under northern growing conditions, with the intensity of the red colour varying among individual trees. The objective of our study was to test the hypothesis that the accumulation of foliar anthocyanins during spring in leaves of B. pendula is an ecotypic response. Chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (Fv/Fm), leaf reflectance and anthocyanin concentrations were measured, in relation to phenology in spring, summer and autumn from birches used for landscaping with either red or green-emergent leaves. The results suggest that (1) the trees with green- or red-emergent juvenile leaves represent different populations, and (2) that the red-emergent leaves senesced earlier, indicating that (3) trees with red-emerging leaves belong to a more northern ecotype than the trees with green-emerging leaves. The role of anthocyanin synthesis in a northern radiation environment is discussed.  相似文献

Evolution of costly secondary defences for a cryptic prey is puzzling, if the prey is already well protected by camouflage. However, if the chemical defence is not sufficient to deter all predators, selection can favour low signal intensity in defended prey. Alternatively, if the costs of chemical defence are low or cost-free, chemical defences can be expected to evolve also for non-signalling prey, particularly if conspicuous signalling is costly. We tested these assumptions with pine sawfly larvae (Neodiprion sertifer and Diprion pini) that are cryptically coloured and chemically defended with resin acids sequestered from their host plant (Pinus sp.). Larvae feed in large aggregations, which we hypothesise could function as a signal of unprofitability. Our results show that even though the birds found N. sertifer larvae unprofitable in the controlled laboratory assays, they continued attacking and consuming them in the wild. When we tested the signal value of aggregation we found that a large group size did not offer protection for a defended larva: the survival was higher in groups of 10 individuals compared to groups of 50, suggesting increased detectability costs for individuals in larger groups. Finally, we tested how costly the production and maintenance of a chemical defence is for D. pini larvae by manipulating the resin acid content of the diet. We did not find any life history or immunological costs of the chemical defence for the larvae. In contrast, pupal weights were higher on the high resin diet than on the low resin diet. Also, larvae were able to produce higher amounts of defence fluids on the high diet than on the low diet. Thus, our result suggests high detectability costs and low production costs of defences could explain why some unprofitable species have not evolved conspicuous signals.  相似文献
