The effects of a population of the boring gastropod Natica tectaon the bivalve Choromytilus meridionalis were investigated atBailey's Cottage, False Bay, South Africa. In July 1979 theN. tecta density on the mussel bed averaged 69 m–2 andthe population consisted mainly of reproductively mature individualsbetween 20–33 mm shell width. Laboratory experiments on N. tecta showed that prey size selectionis an increasing function of predator size. The prey size rangetaken by large N. tecta is also greater than that taken by smallindividuals. The position of the borehole on the mussel shellis a function of the way in which the shell is held by the footduring the boring process. Consumption rates measured in thelaboratory showed an increase from approximately 1 kJ per weekin 18 mm N. tecta to 4.5 kJ per week in 28 mm individuals. Populationconsumption in the field was calculated as 663 kJ m–2month–1. It was estimated that at this rate the standingcrop of mussels in the pool would be eliminated within 10 months.Field measurements showed significant depletion after 6 months. New spat settlement of mussels occur every 4–6 years.The growth curve shows that after one year the population meansize exceeds 30 mm shell length, which is beyond the prey selectionsize range of small N. tecta. It was concluded that at the timeof a new mussel settlement a niche is provided for the simultaneoussettlement and growth of juvenile N. tecta in high densities.However, within one year the increase in prey size, togetherwith depletion due to over-exploitation, limits population growthand density in N. tecta. Hydrococcus brazieri and Arthritica semen on a sandflat at Coodanup,Peel Inlet, Western Australia, accounted for 89.5% of totalmollusc numbers. The mean density of H. brazieri was 9487 m–2and A. semen averaged 8105 m–2. H. brazieri grew at 0.5mm month–1 and reached maturity in 4 months; A. semengrew at 0.3 mm month–1 and reached maturity in 6 months.Somatic production in the Peel-Harvey estuarine system was estimatedto be 0.5 g m–2yr–1for H. brazieri and 4.1 g m–2yr–1for A. semen. The positions of these two species in the estuarinefoodweb is discussed. (Received 26 June 1981;  相似文献

Retusa obtusa held individually in the laboratory carried largeoocytes in the gonad but did not spawn in December-late January.In late Jan-early Feb, however, the first few individuals producedbatches of 8–17 eggs and, by early February, most individualswere producing means of 2–4 eggs d–1 and maximain late Feb of <7.9 d–1. Spawning declined to low levelsin few individuals in late March. By early April, spawning hadvirtually ceased prior to the drastic loss of adults in thepopulation by May. Larger R. obtusa generally produced more eggs than smaller onesand the few specimens shorter than 3.8 mm produced markedlyfewer than those of 3.8–5.0 mm shell length. Twenty of the 34 R. obtusa held in the main breeding period(4 sets started 29 Jan-3 Mar) spawned in 3 or more successiveweeks whereas only 6 of them failed to spawn in 2 consecutiveweeks, so indicating that several successive batches of eggsare commonly produced. Yet in virtually all individuals (exceptat the start of breeding) more eggs were produced in the firstweek of captivity than subsequently. These first-week valuesimply total production by individuals in the spawning seasonof some 112-305 eggs comprising about 2.8-7.6 mg dry weightor, by the Forth estuary population, of 26880-73200 eggs m–2comprising 0.67-1.83 g dry weight m–2. The structure of the zooplankton biotic community and of copepodpopulation in the coastal area of Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea,Antarctica) was investigated during the 10th Italian AntarcticExpedition (1994/1995). Zooplankton biotic community consistedmainly of pteropods (Limacina helicina and Clione antarctica),Cyclopoid (Oithona similis), Poecilostomatoid (Oncaea curvata)and Calanoid (Ctenocalanus vanus, Paraeuchaeta antarctica, Metridiagerlachei and Stephos longipes) copepods, ostracods, larvalpolychaetes and larval euphausiids. Zooplankton abundance rangedfrom 48.1 ind m–3 to 5968.9 ind m–3, and copepodabundance ranged from 45.2 ind m–3 to 3965.3 ind m–3.The highest peak of zooplankton abundance was observed between25 m and the surface and was mainly due to the contributionof O. similis, O. curvata and C. vanus. Zooplankton biomassranged from 5.28 mg m–3 to 13.04 mg m–3 dry weight;the maximum value was observed between 25 m and the surface.Total lipid content varied from 216.44 to 460.73 mg g–1dry weight.  相似文献

Incorporation of polyamine-spermidine into the nutrient mediumat 10–6 and 10–5 M concentrations stimulates pollen-tubegrowth in vitro in Catharanthus roseus L. G. Don. MGBG, an inhibitorof spermidine biosynthesis, at 0.5 x 10–3 and 1 x 10–3M concentrations reduced the percentage of germination as wellas tube growth and at a concentration of 1.5 x 10–3 Mgermination was totally inhibited. Pollen grains incubated inthe medium containing 1.5 x 10–3 M MGBG, when transferredto a fresh medium with 10–5 M spermidine, resulted in80% germination recovery, along with considerable tube growth.Experiments with actinomycin-D indicate that stimulation ofpollen-tube growth by spermidine may involve de novo synthesisof protein. Effects of temperature (15°, 20° and 25°C), O2 partialpressure (PO2=0, 1, 2, 4, and 6 kPa), and individual size(12–79 mm shell length; SL) on survivorship of specimensof the non-indigenous, marine, brown mussel, Perna perna, fromTexas were investigated to assess its potential distributionin North America. Its hypoxia tolerance was temperature-dependent,survivorship being significantly extended at lower temperaturesunder all tested lethal PO2. Incipient tolerated PO2 was 4 and6 kPa at 15 and 20°C, respectively, with >50% mortalityoccurring at 25°C at all tested levels of hypoxia. PO2 hadless of an effect on survival of hypoxia than temperature. At25°C, survivorship was not different over a PO2 range of0–2 kPa and increased only at 4 and 6 kPa. Survivorshipwas size-dependent. Median survival times increased with increasingSL in anoxia and PO2=1 kPa, but at 2, 4 and 6 kPa,smaller individuals survived longer than larger individuals.With tolerance levels similar to other estuarine bivalve species,P. perna should withstand hypoxia encountered in estuarine environments.Thus, its restriction to intertidal rocky shores may be dueto other parameters, particularly its relatively low temperaturetolerance. The annual cycle of abundance, growth and sexual reproductionof the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita was examined over a 12 monthperiod in an isolated, shallow, brackish, man-made body of water:Horsea Lake, England. Strobilation started in December and ephyraewere present through June in varying numbers, suggesting a 7month period of near-continuous recruitment. Horsea Lake hasa dense A.aurita population, with the peak abundance of 24.9m–3 occurring in mid-May. Medusae (>10 mm) were presentin the water column from March through January. Maximum belldiameter of 105 mm was observed in late September. However,medusa growth was very poor (G ranged between –0.03 and0.07 day–1 over a 12 month period), and monthly mean belldiameters were typically <50 mm. For most of the year, theabundant A.aurita population was most likely severely food limitedas a result of a numerically and species-poor mesozooplanktoncommunity dominated by the calanoid copepods Acartia margalefiand Acartia tonsa. Nevertheless, the very small A.aurita medusaewere still able to attain sexual maturity and reproduce. Ripefemale medusae carrying fertilized eggs and planula larvae werefirst observed in May and June, although the main period ofplanula larva production was September-December. In November,all females were ripe, the smallest being 19–20 mm belldiameter. At both Horsea Lake and a nearby productive estuary,Southampton Water, planula larva production increased linearlywith wet weight, although compared with the larger A.auritamedusae from Southampton Water, reproductive output at HorseaLake was low. Aurelia aurita in Horsea Lake showed plasticityin its population characteristics in response to environmentalconditions, with both fecundity and size to maturity varyingon a seasonal basis. Medusae appeared to partition the availablefood resources into either somatic growth when food was abundantor reproductive effort when food was scarce.  相似文献

The abundance of the marine phototrophic planktonic ciliateMesodinium rubrum was monitored throughout an annual cycle attwo stations in the Southampton Water estuary. Seasonal changesin the concentration of nitrate, ammonia and phosphate weremonitored both at the inner estuary station (NW Netley) andouter estuary station (Calshot). Nutrient levels in the winterwere similar at both stations, and were diminished during sequentialdiatom blooms dominated initially by Sketetonema costatum andthen by Rhizosolenia dclicatula. Nitrate was reduced to a seasonalminimum in the outer estuary following these spring diatom blooms,but in the inner estuary was sustained >500 µg I–1until the onset of the M.rubrum bloom. During the developmentof a visible red tide of M.rubrum in June/July at NW Netley,nutrient concentrations were considerably reduced. Cell numbersof M.rubrum varied between 2 and 3 cells ml during winterto >400 cells ml–1 during the bloom at NW Netley, whereasat Calshot cell abundance did not increase above 25 cells ml–1at any time of the year. At NW Netley, dense accumulations ofthe ciliate occurred over restricted depth intervals duringthe bloom and possible factors influencing the observed verticaldistribution of cells are considered. 1Present address: Biology Department, Faculty of Science, AddisAbaba University, PO Box 1176, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia  相似文献

The abundance, life span, growth and production of the mud snailsHydrobia minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa in a semi-naturallagoon system were studied by taking monthly samples at threesites during 1991 and 1992. The most abundant species, H. minoricensisoccurred at mean densities of 12834 to 26264 snails m–2(10.7 to 25.8g dry weigh m–2), depending on the site.The least abundant species, H. ulvae, occurred at mean densitiesof 185 to 353 snails m–2 (3.2 to 2.2g dry weight m–2).The numerical abundance and biomass of the three Hydrobia specieswere positively related to the biomass of benthic macroalgae(P<0.01). Although H. ulvae egg capsules were recorded throughoutthe year, newly hatched snailsof this species were not observed,in contrast to the other two species. The early spring and summercohorts of H. minoricensis and H. ventrosa seemed to be themost numerous. The average life spans of these two species wereestimated to be about 18 and 13 months respectively. Annualproduction estimates for the whole lagoon system were 29.0 (6.3),5.5 (0.8) and 5.2 (1.0)g dry weight (ash-free dry weight) m–2yr–1 for H. minoricensis, H. ulvae and H. ventrosa respectively.The annual P/B ratio was about 2 for H. minoricensis and H.ventrosa. Five inbred strains (129/J, BALB/cByJ, C3HeB/FeJ, C57BI/6J andDBA/2J) were examined with two-bottle (48 h) preference ratiotesting across concentrations of sodium saccharin (3 x 10–4M, 10–3 M, 3 x 10–3 M and 10–2 M), d-phenylalanine(10–3 M, 10–2 M and 10–1 M), and l-glutamine(10–2 M, 3 x 10–2 M, 10–1 M and 3 x 10–1M). Three consistent groupings of strains were observed acrosssubstances and concentrations:
  1. C57BI/6J (preference at low andhigh concentrations);
  2. BALB/cByJ and C3HeB/FeJ (preferenceat high concentrations);
  3. 129/J and DBA/2J (preference at highconcentration for sodiumsaccharin and indifference to d-phenylalanineand l-glutamine).
If a single locus (presumably dpa or Sac) determines these phenotypes,there are likely to be three alleles. If two independent loci(presumably dpa and Sac) determine these phenotypes, an allelicassignment of Sacb/dpa+s for the C57BI/6J strain, Sacb/dpa–sfor the BALB/cByJ and C3HeB/FeJ strains, and either Sacd/dpa+sor Sacd/dpa–s for the 129/J and DBA/2J strains is suggested.Chem. Growth kinetics of Datura innoxia batch suspension cultureswen monitored by a Klett-turbidimetric technique. While cultured. wt varied linearly with Klett units, f. wt and packed cellvolume did not. Turbidimetrically determined doubling timeswere highly reproducible. The method proved to be useful inthe determination of acutely lethal conantrations of a seriesof anti-metabolites. In certain circumstances, aggregate dissociation in batch suspensioncultures of D. innoxia was found to be coupled to growth rate.Suspensions maintained with 10–5 M 2,4-D exhibited a relativelyslow growth rate with a high degree of aggregate dissociation:10–4 M 2,4-D promoted a maximum growth rate, but dramaticallysuppressed aggregate dissociation. At 10–5 M 2,4-D, themitotic index of smaller-aggregate fractions was greater thanthe mitotic index of the large-aggregate fraction. At 10–5M 2,4-D the converse was observed. Supraoptimal 2,4-D concentrationsthus enhanced both aggregate dissociation and the growth ofsmaller aggregates. When present in concentrations promoting optimal growth. malicand succinic acids caused a decrease in aggregate dissociation.Casein hydrolysate dramatically enhanced growth, but did notaffect aggregate dissociation to the same degree as 2,4-D orthe Krebs cycle organic acids. Suggestions are made concerningmedium composition to be used in future mutant selection schemesusing D. innoxia. The effects of a range of applied nitrate (NO3) concentrations(0–20 mol m3) on germination and emergence percentageof Triticum aestivum L. cv. Otane were examined at 30, 60, 90and 120 mm sowing depths. Germination percentage was not affectedby either sowing depth or applied NO3 concentration whereasemergence percentage decreased with increased sowing depth regardlessof applied NO3 concentration. Nitrate did not affectemergence percentage at 30 mm sowing depth, but at 60 to 120mm depth, emergence percentage decreased sharply with an increasedapplied NO3 concentration of 0 to 1·0 mol m–3then decreased only slightly with further increases in appliedNO3 of about 5·0 mol m–3. Root and shoot growth, NO3 accumulation and nitrate reductaseactivity (NRA) of plants supplied with 0, 1·0 and 1·0mol m–3 NO3 at a sowing depth of 60 mm were measuredprior to emergence. The coleoptile of all seedlings opened withinthe substrate. Prior to emergence from the substrate, shootextension growth was unaffected by additional NO3 butshoot fr. wt. and dry wt. were both greater at 1·0 and1·0 mol m–3 NO3 than with zero NO3.Root dry wt. was unaffected by NO3. Nitrate concentrationand NRA in root and shoot were always low without NO3.At 1·0 and 10 mol m3 NO3, NO3 accumulatedin the root and shoot to concentrations substantially greaterthan that applied and caused the induction of NRA. Regardlessof the applied NO3 concentration, seedlings which failedto emerge still had substantial seed reserves one month afterplanting. Coleoptile length was substantially less for seedlingswhich did not emerge than for seedlings which emerged, but wasnot affected by NO3. It is proposed that (a) decreasedemergence percentage with increased sowing depth was due tothe emergence of leaf I from the coleoptile within the substrateand (b) decreased emergence percentage with additional NO3was due to the increased expansion of leaf 1 within the substrateresulting in greater folding and damage of the leaf. Age composition and growth rates of the squid Loligo vulgaris(Lamark, 1797) were studied by examination of growth incrementswithin statohths of 419 specimens (mantle length, ML, rangingfrom 32 to 400 mm). The squid were obtained by monthly samplingfrom the catches of commercial trawls off southern Portugalbetween March and September, 1993 The total number of growthincrements in the mounted and ground statohths was counted usinga semi-automatic image analysis system. ML was significantlycorrelated with both the statolith length, TSL and the numberof increments, NI. The female statolith was slightly largerthan the male statolith for the same mantle size. Growth ratesof individuals showed high variability with an average estimatedat 34.6 mm month–1 for males and 33.5 mm month–1for females. Growth in length between 70 and 280 days was bestdescribed by a power function for both sexes. The growth indexof the statolith (TSL/NI) decreased with individual growth.This result may be related with the onset of sexual maturation.L. vulgaris hatched throughout the year with two distinct peaks,in spring which is the mam breeding period, and in autumn. Thelife cycle of the L. vulgaris population on the south Portugueseshelf was completed in one year *Present address for correspondence: Instituto de InvestigacionMariflas. Using well plates of Phaeocystis pouchetii colonies isolatedfrom experimental mesocosms in western Norway, increases incolony size and division were documented. Median longest lineardimensions increased 0–7 µm h–1; literaturePhaeocystis globosa values are 0.9–4.7 µm h–1.Ten to twelve percent of colonies divided at rates of 0.21–0.28divisions day–1. Daughter colonies were 100 µm smallerthan mother colonies. Colonies delayed 3.5–4.9 days tofirst division, compared with literature values of 4–5days for P. globosa. This study provides the first experimentalevidence for colony division of wild P. pouchetii.  相似文献

This paper examines the biology and ecology of Helix lucorumL. which lives in mainland Greece, as well as its growth andsecondary production. A demographic study revealed that (a)3 cohorts exist at any time during the year (when adults ofall generations belong to the same cohort) (b) egg-laying andhatching occur during the months of July and August respectively,(c) the most rapid growth takes place during spring. Study ofH. lucorum genitalia in relation to age showed that the snailsaxe sexually mature 3 years after hatching, when the largestdiameter of their shell (D) is equal to or greater than 35 mm Von Bertallanffy's method suggests that Helix lucorum may liveup to 14 years or more in order to reach its possible maximumsize (48.80 mm) The study of relative growth of D in relation to Ps (peristomesurface) of Helix lucorum shows that D grows faster than Pswhen D12.50 mm; juveniles change their growth rate when theirD arrives at 22.05 mm, and growth becomes slower when adultsarrive at 36.27 mm Annual secondary production calculated by the size frequencymethod gave a mean annual density of 3.39 individuals per m2,a mean annual crop (biomass) of 4.04 g-m–2 and an annualproduction (P) of 5.02 g · m–2. The annual turnoverratio (P//b) is equal to 1.24 (Received 23 June 1987;  相似文献

Interannual changes in the biomass of the Black Sea gelatinous zooplankton   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The 15 year changes in the total gelatinous biomass consistof a general trend to increase, from 250 gm–2 in 1980to 2500 g m–2 in 1995, and fluctuations with a periodof –4 years performed against the background of this trendin the upper 150 m layer. Different species occupying distincttrophic niches form these peaks. When represented as the percentageof the total zooplankton biomass, Aurelia aurita and Mnemiopsisleidyi exhibit the contra-phase fluctuations where a sharp increasein M.leidyi is accompanied by a decrease in the A.aurita biornass.  相似文献

  1. Heliangine at 10–4M promoted the adventitious root formationin hypocotyls of cuttings taken from light-grown (1,900 lux)seedlings of Phaseolus mungo. The promotion was almost completelyreduced by simultaneously supplied 310–4M cysteine or1.510–4M cystine, but not suppressed by 310–4Mof reduced glutathione, alanine or serine.
  2. A 4 hr pretreatmentwith 310–4M cysteine made Phaseoluscuttings less sensitiveto heliangine, but cysteine suppliedafter the treatment withheliangine brought about no effecton the action of heliangine.
  3. Cysteine also removed the inhibiting effect of heliangineonthe indoleacetic acid-induced elongation of etiolated Avenacoleoptile sections.
  4. In an aqueous solution heliangine formedan addition productwith cysteine, indicating that cysteinecan inactivate helianginewithout any biological processes.
  5. On Phaseolus adventitious rooting, no effect was observedofp-chloromercuribenzoic acid, N-ethylmaleimide, 1,4-naphthoquinone,coumarin or penicillin. Reactivity toward sulfhydryl groupsalone does not qualify a substance to be a promotor of rootformation.
  6. Maleic hydrazide at 10–4M promoted root formation,butits effect was not removed by cysteine.

The effects of abscisic acid (ABA) treatments on the surfaceelectrical properties of cells and isolated protoplasts fromCatharanthus roseus cell suspension cultures were studied byelectrophoretic mobility and 9-aminoacridine (9AA) fluorescencemeasurements. The surface charge densities of the cells andprotoplasts estimated from electrokinetic data were –0.064Cm–2and –0.048 C m–2 respectively. These values wereclose to that estimated by 9AA fluorescence technique i.e.,–0.053 Cm–2 for the cells and –0.041 Cm–2for the isolated protoplasts accordingly. The net negative surfacecharge density decreased after application of 10 µM and50 µM ABA in both cells and protoplats, the more pronouncedeffect being observed at 10 µM ABA. When 100 µMABA was supplemented to the cell suspension culture the oppositeeffect was observed. The average charge density increased to–0.074 C m–2 for the cells, and to –0.055C m–2 for protoplasts, as revealed from the 9AA measurements.The results are discussed in terms of specific concentrationdependent ABA-induced alterations of the electrostatic propertiesof cell and protoplast membranes. Statolith morphology and microstructure were studied in twocommon species of panktonic cranchiid squids, Belonella borealis[four juveniles with mantle length (ML) 375–450 mm] andGaliteuthis phyllura (13 paralarvae and juveniles, ML 9–235mm),caught near the bottom and in pelagic layers over the continentalslope of Siberia in the northwest Bering Sea. The total numberof growth increments within the statoliths ranged from 277 to294 in B.borealis and from 10 to 209 in G.phyllura. Assumingthat these increments were produced daily, both species growrapidly in length (daily growth rate = 1.13mm day–1 duringthe first 8–10 months of their juvenile phase in the mesopelagiclayers, prior to migration into deeper waters for maturation.  相似文献

Gonads were most commonly reduced in October and fullest inMar-Jun with more pronounced seasonal differences in the estuarythan in the firth. Brood-pouches accordingly were fullest inspring-early summer and emptiest in autumn-early winter. Eggsand early embryos predominated in brood-pouches of early springbut were few in Aug-Oct whereas well-developed juveniles werefew in early spring, increased in spring-summer and came topredominate in Jun-Nov. Brood-pouch loads varied with size offemale but, for a standard 10 mm female, were significantlylower in the 2 estuarine sites than in the firth. Changes inmean brood-pouch count varied only 2.5-fold during the yearin the firth but 4.10-fold in the estuary. In vitro development of eggs to shelled juveniles with the velumresorbed took some 68 d at 10°C and 32%. Eggs and late brood-pouchjuveniles were significantly heavier in the estuary than inthe firth (dry weight, ash-free dry weight (AFDW), ash weight).AFDW changed little during development while ash weight (mostlyshell) increased 3.5-4.4-fold. In a laboratory tide tank, femalesreleased 60 d means of <1.3 juveniles d–1; more inmid- and late year than in Jan-Mar, more from upshore firthfemales than from low shore or estuary females, more when heldat high tide-tank levels than at lower levels, and generallyat rates comparable to release in containers held at the siteof origin. Egg production in laboratory females did not keeppace with release of young and, at the end of trials, brood-pouchcounts were mostly lower than in contemporary free winkles.Females that had released most (e.g. at high tank levels) containedleast brood-pouch embryos and young subsequently. Release of young in the tide tank was markedly faster at timesnear new moon (often reaching or exceeding 2 female–1d–1) than near full moon (often <1 female–1 d–1).This lunar fluctuation was clearest in fast-releasing sets heldat high- or mid-tide tank levels. It was not observed in Jan-Mar(when release from most females was slow) nor in females atlow tank levels. (Received 3 September 1990; accepted 8 November 1990)  相似文献
