Zooplankton in the River Rhine was surveyed for five years at the Dutch sampling stations, Lobith (German/Dutch border) and Maassluis (at the point of discharge of the river into the North Sea). The zooplankton abundance showed an apparent seasonal pattern at both stations, characterized by low densities during the winter period, and higher densities during the summer period, with a spring peak. Zooplankton was dominated by rotifers at both stations, although during the winter periods the contribution of copepods was considerable. The rotifers were dominated byBrachionus angularis, B. calyciflorus, Keratella cochlearis andK. quadrata; the copepods by cyclopoid nauplii; the cladocerans by small-sized species mainly belonging toBosmina. At Maassluis the relative contribution of copepods was higher than at Lobith. Furthermore, the zooplankton at Maassluis included the speciesEurytemora affinis, characteristic for estuarine conditions. In spring, the rotifer density and water temperature and rotifer density and chlorophylla concentration were positively correlated. Furthermore, both rotifer density and chlorophylla were inversely correlated with discharge. The possible role of environmental factors (water temperature, chlorophyll content, discharge and biotic factors) controlling the river zooplankton dynamics is indicated.  相似文献

We evaluate trophic interactions between the rotifer Asplanchna priodonta and the plankton community of Lake Windsborn (Eifel District, Germany). The long-term population dynamics of this species and of the two most abundant zooplankton species, Keratella cochlearis and Bosmina longirostris, were analyzed in relation to hydrochemical and climatic variates. The maximum abundance of A. priodonta was limited to the summer months with temperature being the only significant predictor of abundance. Intrinsic rate of growth and abundance of the three species were independent from each other suggesting the absence of trophic interactions. In Lake Windsborn, A. priodonta was a grazer rather than a predator. Its diet included high proportions of colonial algae and cyanobacteria which cannot be ingested by the other abundant zooplankton species, whereas zooplanktonic food were rarely found. Thus, our study supports the hypothesis that A. priodonta is an opportunistic feeder whose trophic position entirely depends on the structure of the plankton community.  相似文献

The results indicate that the two rotifer species Brachionus angularis and Keratella cochlearis have different life history strategies. Brachionus angularis appeared to be an r-strategist, showing higher reproductive, mortality and population growth rates than K. cochlearis. Additional evidence is offered suggesting that K. cochlearis is a K-strategist. Although K. cochlearis had a lower growth rate than B. angularis, this was compensated by a lower mortality rate, especially in pre-reproductive individuals. In addition, K. cochlearis allocated energy to reproduction more efficiently than B. angularis.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of the rotifer Keratella cochlearis in stratified water columns of mesotrophic and eutrophic lakes during summer stagnation has been studied. Coexisting morphs K. cochlearis hispida (Lauterborn, 1898), K. c. tecta (Gosse, 1851) and K. c. cochlearis (Gosse, 1851) inhabit different layers in the water column and are vertically subdivided. The distribution of morph abundance and reproductive potential indicate that substitution of morphs within the vertical water column may be due to trophic conditions. The maximum population productivity is observed at the epi-metalimnion border. The maximum density zone lies below the zone of the highest productivity. The principle of sliced functioning is used to explain the adaptive significance of the morphological structure of populations under heterogeneous environmental conditions.  相似文献

Morphological changes in a population of Keratella cochlearis were investigated in a reservoir of changed temperature and high trophy. Four morphological forms were distinguished: Keratella cochlearis f. cochlearis, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. micracantha, K. cochlearis var. tecta f. typica and K. cochlearis f. macracantha. A correlation between the length of the lorica and the posterior spine, and the temperature of water was observed. These four forms of Keratella cochlearis occurred during the entire period of investigations.  相似文献

Rotifers were sampled at monthly intervals for a year at four monitoring stations in Rapel Reservoir (a hydroelectric impoundment) in Central Chile (34°02S; 71°35W). Fifteen species were identified, but only Keratella cochlearis was consistently found at each station, it usually was the most abundant (> 50% of total rotifers). Marked differences were found among sites; stations I and 2, those nearest to the dam, showed greatest rotifer densities in spring and autumn. Station 4, that nearest to the inflowing rivers, had its highest rotifer abundance in summer. Station 8 had the highest mean density but the least marked seasonal changes in rotifer numbers.The impoundment water dynamics and the relative locations within the lake (distance from the dam or from the rivers) are suggested as determinants for different rotifer assemblages and, probably, for most other planktonic organisms.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer biomass and abundance in two trace metal-contaminated, acidified lakes were compared with that of six non-acidic lakes in central Ontario, Canada, which had low levels of metals. Rotifers, especially Keratella taurocephala Myers, were an order of magnitude more abundant in the acidified lakes. They composed 16 to 51% of the total zooplankton biomass in these lakes, but <2% in the non-acidic lakes. Recent experimental work supports a hypothesis that the great abundance of rotifers in the acidic lakes is attributable to a reduction in densities of crustacean competitors.  相似文献

Zooplankton abundance was related to hydrological and environmental variables in a hydrologically dynamic lake fed by a pseudokarstic aquifer. The study period (2002–2006) in Lake Tovel covered different hydrological situations with water residence time (WRT) having the lowest values in 2002 and the highest values in 2003. WRT was negatively correlated with silica concentrations and algal biovolume. Furthermore, the biovolume of small algae was highest in spring and summer, while large algae did not show any pattern. In multivariate analysis, high abundance of crustacean species in autumn and winter was positively related to WRT and negatively to algal biovolume, while high abundance of rotifer species in spring and summer was negatively related to WRT and positively to algal biovolume. With the exception of Keratella cochlearis and Gastropus stylifer, rotifers showed a pattern of crustacean avoidance, and three groups were distinguished: (i) Ascomorpha ecaudis and Polyarthra dolichoptera, (ii) Asplanchna priodonta and Synchaeta spp., and (iii) Filinia terminalis and Keratella quadrata. These groups were associated with different food sources and depths. We suggest that WRT influenced the rotifer–crustacean relationship by wash-out effects and competition for food resources. The dynamics of single rotifer species were attributable to specific feeding requirements and adaptations. In summary, WRT determined the platform for abiotic and biotic interactions that influenced population dynamics of crustaceans and rotifers.  相似文献

The plankton rotifers Keratella cochlearis and Polyarthra vulgaris were sampled at 10 cm below the surface at different distances from two dissimilar shores and in the centre of a small eutrophic lake. Light and depth were measured at each sampling point. In each case the numbers of rotifers per liter increased with distance from the shore. There was a significant correlation between the numbers for the two species for the two shores, but none in the centre. In the case of one shore there was a strong correlation between rotifer numbers and supra-surface ambient light.  相似文献

Between 1991 and 1993, samples were collected upstream and downstream of the industrial basin and urban centre of Liège. Rotifers and crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were identified and counted. Their population dynamics were related to physical and chemical factors (temperature, oxygen, ammonium, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates) and to phytoplankton biomass. The zooplankton was dominated by rotifers; crustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) were less abundant. There was a succession of groups and species, some thriving in the spring and others in summer or autumn. The dominant rotifer species were Brachionus calyciflorus Pallas, Brachionus angularis Gosse, Keratella cochlearis (Gosse) and Synchaeta spp.; B. calyciflorus and B. angularis are spring species. K. cochlearis was present between May and November. Crustacean biomass was important in summer and autumn, but the faunal spectrum and biomass also varied with sampling location. Low spring and summer discharges allowed the phytoplankton to develop significantly. The zooplankton development followed a similar pattern. During low flow, when plankton populations become established, some declines in phytoplankton could only be explained by sedimentation and grazing pressure by zooplankton. Although these factors provided a good explanation of the longitudinal variation, some local conditions (e.g. oxygen deficit, high level of phosphate) also induced changes (e.g. industrial and municipal waste water discharge).  相似文献

Temporal changes in the biomass of rotifer plankton were examinedin a shallow hyper trophic lake during 1 month (April/May),when the predatory rotifer Asplanchna brightwelli develops.The abundance of herbivorous rotifers was regulated by predationfrom A.brightwelli and from the copepod Acanthocyclops robustus.The densities and fecundity rates of Keratella cochlearis andKeratella quadrata were negatively related with the biomassof predators. Stomach analyses showed that Asplanchna fed selectivelyon reproductive females of K.cochlearis, reducing the fecundityof this species. Predators induced longer caudal spines in K.quadrata,which were negatively related to the fecundity of this rotifer,suggesting a reproductive cost associated with spine production.In contrast, spine length of K.cochlearis was not related topredators, but to temperature. These results showed that predatorscan reduce rotifer densities through increasing mortality andthrough decreasing rotifer fecundity rates regardless of phytoplanktonbiomass. The vertical distribution of rotifer populations has been analyzed in a meromictic basin (III) of the karstic Lake Banyoles. This basin had, at the time of the study, an anaerobic monimolimnion from around 17 m in summer or 21 in winter to 25 m, its maximum depth. However, below this layer a warmer microaerophilic zone with suspended marls is found in a chimney to a depth of 130 m.The rotifer distributions of several years are compared. The presence of large populations of rotifers at the oxic-anoxic interface is constant through the years, but highly variable regarding the total abundance and relative proportions of the species, depending on the importance of the vertical mixing in winter and the posterior segregation of water layers as a function of production and decomposition processes. Filinia hofmanni, Filinia longiseta longiseta are species with a restricted occurrence at the oxycline and are not present in the other non meromictic basins of the lake. Filinia terminalis, more broadly distributed, also has dense populations in summer at the oxycline in basin III, but disappears from the plankton during this season in the other basins. Other species, such as Polyarthra dolichoptera, Anuraeopsis fissa, Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia longispina, also showed maxima at the oxycline in summer, as well as other maxima in the metalimnion. Populations at the oxycline are probably different ecotypes adapted to low oxygen conditions, but having the advantage of high food availability.  相似文献

The structuring role and predation impact of Cyclops vicinus on the rotifer community was studied using in situ enclosure experiments in Římov Reservoir during the spring of 2000. Seasonal changes in abundance and birth rates of the rotifer species Synchaeta lakowitziana , Polyarthra spp., Keratella cochlearis and Kellicottia longispina were related to predation pressure, i.e. selectivity and cropping rates of C. vicinus . All four rotifer species were found to be consumed by C. vicinus whose predation rates showed a marked succession through the spring period and corresponded to changes in the relative abundance of the pelagic species. The highest predation rates exhibited by C. vicinus were on Synchaeta lakowitziana and Polyarthra spp., being 11.3 and 6.4 ind Cyclops –1 day–1 respectively. The activity of the predator switched among three types of preferred food during the spring period. The most preferred, Synchaeta, was replaced by Polyarthra after Synchaeta became extinct and these species were replaced by Keratella when both soft‐bodied forms were not available in sufficient quantities. Loricated species (K. cochlearis and K. longispina) were consumed at a slower rate. We calculated the proportion of rotifer production cropped day–1 in order to estimate the predation impact of C. vicinus , which ranged from 11.6 to more than 100% over time and rotifer species. Priest Pot is a shallow hypereutrophic tarn that supports large numbers of rotifers and young roach (Rutilus rutilus (L).). In this paper we describe the planktonic rotifer community of the tarn and show that the young roach feed extensively on Keratella cochlearis. A two year study of the population dynamics of K. cochlearis, nevertheless, failed to detect any obvious demographic effects of roach predation. Some general comparisons of fish biomass and rotifer production suggest that the fish are unlikely to influence the development of their rotifer prey in such a productive system.  相似文献

The relative importance of and changes in resource limitation of herbivorous rotifers were assessed during the clear-water phase in the Rímov Reservoir, Czech Republic, using in situ manipulative experiments. Resource limitation was tested experimentally as the difference in population growth rate (Δr) among various experimental treatments on four occasions. The reservoir community of rotifers was exposed to three treatments: (i) control, (ii) diluted and (iii) diluted and fertilized. Significant responses to these experimental manipulations were shown by Synchaeta spp., Polyarthra spp. and Keratella cochlearis. Growth rate was usually highest during the spring rotifer maximum and decreased during the clear water phase. The highest intensity of food limitation (expressed as ‚Chlorophyll-a’ limitation) was found in Synchaeta spp. K. cochlearis had low food limitation during the spring peak, high food limitation during the second experiment and low food limitation, again, during the later experiment. In contrast, Polyarthra spp. had the same Chlorophyll-a limitation throughout the whole experimental period. Linear regression was used to estimate the relative proportion of Δr variability explained by Chlorophyll-a concentration and rotifer density in all of the experiments. Chlorophyll-a concentration explained 89, 97 and 92% of the resource limitation in Synchaeta spp., Polyarthra spp. and K. cochlearis, respectively. The proportion of variability explained by rotifer density-dependent factors was lower: 60% for Synchaeta spp. and 68 % for Polyarthra spp.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal fluctuations in rotifer abundance have been monitored along a trophic gradient in the northern Baltic. The most common rotifer was Synchaeta spp., which had one abundance peak in June and one in September–October. Only during the latter period was the abundance significantly higher in the eutrophic basin compared to the reference area. The annual production of Synchaeta spp. was about double in the eutrophic basin. A positive correlation between Synchaeta spp. biomass and phytoplankton biomass was obtained during the autumn, but not during the early summer peak, although the phytoplankton community was dominated by the same species. Keratella quadrata, K. cochlearis and K. cruciformis were most abundant in August–September, and all three species had increased abundance in the eutrophic basin.  相似文献

The impact of organic nutrients and massive addition of bacteria was followed in lake water mesocosms in a eutrophic lake. Increased DOM initiated a sequence of trophic responses indicated by rapid increases in bacterioplankton, protozoa, and algal biomass. The populations of Keratella cochlearis and Keratella quadrata showed a distinct response by rapid increase in birth rate followed by maxima of production and abundance. This succession clearly reflected the trophic position of these rotifer populations in the food chain. A reverse response was observed in Conochilus unicornis.  相似文献

The number of individuals and species of zooplankton were sampled concurrently with Hydrilla biomass and water quality for one year in a small, eutrophic central Florida lake. Throughout the study, rotifer species and individuals dominated the zooplankton. The abundance of the zooplankton tended to remain high when Hydrilla biomass was at its seasonal low during late winter and early spring. When hydrilla growth increased in the late spring and summer months causing a decrease in total alkalinity, specific conductivity, water color, turbidity, orthophosphate and chlorophyll a concentrations; the abundance of the zooplankton declined. During this time, there was a shift from limnetic to littoral species, principally rotifers. Hydrilla growth did not affect the mean number of cladoceran or copepod species, but may have led to an increase in rotifer species.  相似文献

The rotifers of the recently-commissioned Azibo reservoir were studied during two years. The community was similar to that of other portuguese reservoirs with Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra spp., Asplanchna priodonta and Collotheca pelagica dominant, although densities varied strongly. Maximum rotifer density was 640 ind l–1 in 1987 and 315 ind l–1 in 1988. During the first year two density peaks were observed, while in the second year fluctuations were irregular. Phytoplankton availability was considered the main reason for the fluctuation of rotifer density, although temperature, dissolved oxygen and cladoceran interference may also have played a role. A high density of Anabaena flos-aquae might have facilitated the dominance of K. cochlearis in 1988.  相似文献
