The acoustic emission rate (as a result of xylem cavitation), stem water content, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential of heather (Calluna vulgaris L. Hull) were compared over a period of 18 months at two contrasting sites in Britain. The sites were Thursely Common in south-east England, and Flanders Moss in central Scotland (average rainfall of 600 mm per year and 1500 mm per year, respectively). In the first year of study (1992) the natural difference between the sites was amplified by a severe drought affecting south-east England. The relative water content of the xylem (RWC) did not differ between the sites, and did not fluctuate seasonally, despite the drought at Thursely. Acoustic emissions were detected at both sites, but the incidence was low. The same range of foliage water potential and stomatal conductance was found at both sites. The leaf area to sapwood area ratio at the dry site was half that at the wet site, and it is suggested that this adjustment of the transpiring area relative to the water conducting area facilitates the close physiological state of the plants at the two sites. The possible occurrence of aerial refilling and freezing induced xylem cavitation is also discussed.

As soil and plant water status decline, decreases in hydraulic conductance can limit a plant's ability to maintain gas exchange. We investigated hydraulic limitations for Artemisia tridentata during summer drought. Water use was quantified by measurements of soil and plant water potential ( Ψ ), transpiration and leaf area. Hydraulic transport capacity was quantified by vulnerability to water stress-induced cavitation for root and stem xylem, and moisture release characteristics for soil. These data were used to predict the maximum possible steady-state transpiration rate ( E crit) and minimum leaf xylem pressure ( Ψ crit). Transpiration and leaf area declined by ~ 80 and 50%, respectively, as soil Ψ decreased to –2·6 MPa during drought. Leaf-specific hydraulic conductance also decreased by 70%, with most of the decline predicted in the rhizosphere and root system. Root conductance was projected to be the most limiting, decreasing to zero to cause hydraulic failure if E crit was exceeded. The basis for this prediction was that roots were more vulnerable to xylem cavitation than stems (99% cavitation at –4·0 versus –7·8 MPa, respectively). The decline in water use during drought was necessary to maintain E and Ψ within the limits defined by E crit and Ψ crit.

The relationships between the vulnerability of stem xylem to cavitation, stomatal conductance, stomatal density, and leaf and stem water potential were examined in six hybrid poplar (P38P38, Walker, Okanese, Northwest, Assiniboine and Berlin) and balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera) clones. Stem xylem cavitation resistance was examined with the Cavitron technique in well-watered plants grown in the greenhouse. To investigate stomatal responses to drought, plants were subjected to drought stress by withholding watering for 5 (mild drought) and 7 (severe drought) days and to stress recovery by rewatering severely stressed plants for 30 min and 2 days. The clones varied in stomatal sensitivity to drought and vulnerability to stem xylem cavitation. P38P38 reduced stomatal conductance in response to mild stress while the balsam poplar clone maintained high leaf stomatal conductance under more severe drought stress conditions. Differences between the severely stressed clones were also observed in leaf water potentials with no or relatively small decreases in Assiniboine, P38P38, Okanese and Walker. Vulnerability to drought-induced stem xylem embolism revealed that balsam poplar and Northwest clones reached loss of conductivity at lower stem water potentials compared with the remaining clones. There was a strong link between stem xylem resistance to cavitation and stomatal responsiveness to drought stress in balsam poplar and P38P38. However, the differences in stomatal responsiveness to mild drought suggest that other drought-resistant strategies may also play a key role in some clones of poplars exposed to drought stress.

Catastrophic hydraulic failure will likely be an important mechanism contributing to large‐scale tree dieback caused by increased frequency and intensity of droughts under global climate change. To compare the susceptibility of 22 temperate deciduous tree and shrub species to hydraulic failure during a record drought in the southeastern USA, we quantified leaf desiccation, native embolism, wood density, stomatal conductance and predawn and midday leaf water potential at four sites with varying drought intensities. At the two driest sites, there was widespread leaf wilting and desiccation, and most species exhibited predawn leaf water potentials of ≤3 MPa and >60% loss of xylem conductivity in branches. Although species with high wood density were more resistant to cavitation, they had higher levels of native embolism and greater canopy dieback than species with low wood density. This unexpected result can be explained by the failure of species with dense wood to avert a decline in water potential to dangerous levels during the drought. Leaf water potential was negatively correlated with wood density, and the relationship was strongest under conditions of severe water deficit. Species with low wood density avoided catastrophic embolism by relying on an avoidance strategy that involves partial drought deciduousness, higher sensitivity of stomata to leaf water potential and perhaps greater rooting depth. These species therefore maintained water potential at levels that ensured a greater margin of safety against embolism. These differences among species may mediate rapid shifts in species composition of temperate forests if droughts intensify due to climate change.

Hydraulic conductivity ( K ) in the soil and xylem declines as water potential ( Ψ ) declines. This results in a maximum rate of steady-state transpiration ( E crit) and corresponding minimum leaf Ψ ( Ψ crit) at which K has approached zero somewhere in the soil–leaf continuum. Exceeding these limits causes water transport to cease. A model determined whether the point of hydraulic failure (where K = 0) occurred in the rhizosphere or xylem components of the continuum. Below a threshold of root:leaf area ( A R: A L), the loss of rhizosphere K limited E crit and Ψ crit. Above the threshold, loss of xylem K from cavitation was limiting. The A R: A L threshold ranged from > 40 for coarse soils and/or cavitation-resistant xylem to < 0·20 in fine soils and/or cavitation-susceptible xylem. Comparison of model results with drought experiments in sunflower and water birch indicated that stomatal regulation of E reflected the species' hydraulic potential for extracting soil water, and that the more sensitive stomatal response of water birch to drought was necessary to avoid hydraulic failure. The results suggest that plants should be xylem-limited and near their A R: A L threshold. Corollary predictions are (1) within a soil type the A R: A L should increase with increasing cavitation resistance and drought tolerance, and (2) across soil types from fine to coarse the A R: A L should increase and maximum cavitation resistance should decrease.

Xylem network structure and function have been characterized for many woody plants, but less is known about fern xylem, particularly in species endemic to climates where water is a limiting resource for months at a time. We characterized seasonal variability in soil moisture and frond water status in a common perennial fern in the redwood understory of a costal California, and then investigated the consequences of drought‐induced embolism on vascular function. Seasonal variability in air temperature and soil water content was minimal, and frond water potential declined slowly over the observational period. Our data show that Polystichum munitum was protected from significant drought‐induced hydraulic dysfunction during this growing season because of a combination of cavitation resistant conduits (Air‐seeding threshold (ASP) = ?1.53 MPa; xylem pressure inducing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (P50) = ?3.02 MPa) and a soil with low moisture variability. High resolution micro‐computed tomography (MicroCT) imaging revealed patterns of embolism formation in vivo for the first time in ferns providing insight into the functional status of the xylem network under drought conditions. Together with stomatal conductance measurements, these data suggest that P. munitum is adapted to tolerate drier conditions than what was observed during the growing season.

The effect of drought on plant water relations and photosynthesis of Vigna glabrescens (Vg) and Vigna unguiculata (cvs. 1183, EPACE-1 and Lagoa), which differ in their drought resistance, was compared. With the increase of drought severity, Vg showed a more gradual stomatal closure and maintained significantly higher levels of stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic activity (PN) than the other genotypes even when minimum relative water content (RWC) values were observed. Furthermore, Vg was the only genotype able to accumulate significant amounts of proline already under moderate water deficit, what could explain the lower osmotic potential (ψs) values observed in these plants. The three V. unguiculata cultivars presented a similar stomatal control under increasing water deficit. A mesophyllic impairment of photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) was detected for cv. 1183 from the beginning of drought onset (85-75 % RWC) while in the Vg plants the values remained unaffected along the whole drought period, indicating that PN decrease observed in this genotype is mainly a consequence of stomatal closure. Such Pmax maintenance suggests the existence of a high mesophyllic ability to cope with increasing tissue dehydration in Vg. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

Identifying the drivers of stomatal closure and leaf damage during stress in grasses is a critical prerequisite for understanding crop resilience. Here, we investigated whether changes in stomatal conductance (gs) during dehydration were associated with changes in leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), xylem cavitation, xylem collapse, and leaf cell turgor in wheat (Triticum aestivum). During soil dehydration, the decline of gs was concomitant with declining Kleaf under mild water stress. This early decline of leaf hydraulic conductance was not driven by cavitation, as the first cavitation events in leaf and stem were detected well after Kleaf had declined. Xylem vessel deformation could only account for <5% of the observed decline in leaf hydraulic conductance during dehydration. Thus, we concluded that changes in the hydraulic conductance of tissues outside the xylem were responsible for the majority of Kleaf decline during leaf dehydration in wheat. However, the contribution of leaf resistance to whole plant resistance was less than other tissues (<35% of whole plant resistance), and this proportion remained constant as plants dehydrated, indicating that Kleaf decline during water stress was not a major driver of stomatal closure.

Lavoisiera campos-portoana Barreto (Melastomataceae) has two kinds of leaves, pubescent and glabrous, and branches may have one or both types of leaves at the same moment. The plant is endemic to high altitude rocky fields in Brazil where rainfall is very seasonal. We predicted that these two leaf types are adaptations to different regimes of water availability. In experimental conditions of drought stress, we measured relative water content (RWC), photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a fluorescence and osmotic potential, and we counted stomates and measured stomatal conductance on both sides of leaves and compared these between the two leaf types. Stomatal conductance and electron transport rate at a given photosynthetic photon flux were greater in pubescent leaves than in glabrous leaves, and both declined during drought stress. Excessive photon flux density in glabrous leaves was greater during stress and after rehydration. Photosynthetic pigment content and RWC did not change between leaves, and values reduced during the stress period. Both types of leaves showed osmotic adjustment capacity, which occurred earlier in glabrous ones. These morphophysiological differences highlight the adaptation strategies of this plant to withstand drought, since the glabrous portion of the plant presents a preventive behavior, while the pubescent portion only shows the same responses in more advanced stages of drought stress.

Embolisms decrease plant hydraulic conductance and therefore reduce the ability of the xylem to transport water to leaves provided that embolized conduits are not refilled. However, as a xylem conduit is filled with gas during cavitation, water is freed to the transpiration stream and this transiently increases xylem water potential. This capacitive effect of embolism formation on plant function has not been explicitly quantified in the past. A dynamic model is presented that models xylem water potential, xylem sap flow and cavitation, taking into account both the decreasing hydraulic conductance and the water release effect of xylem embolism. The significance of the capacitive effect increases in relation to the decreasing hydraulic conductance effect when transpiration rate is low in relation to the total amount of water in xylem conduits. This ratio is typically large in large trees and during drought.

Root pressure and plasma membrane intrinsic protein (PIP) availability in the xylem have been recognized to participate in the refilling of embolized conduits, yet integration of the two mechanisms has not been reported in the same plant. In this study, 4‐month‐old seedlings of a hybrid poplar (Populus alba × Populus glandulosa) clone 84K were subjected to two contrasting soil‐water treatments, with the drought treatment involving withholding of water for 17 days to reduce the soil‐water content to 10% of the saturated field capacity, followed by a re‐watering cycle. The percentage loss of stem hydraulic conductance (PLC) sharply increased, and stomatal conductance and photosynthesis declined in response to drought stress; these processes were gradually restored following the subsequent re‐watering. Embolism was most severe in the middle portions of the stem, followed by the basal and top portions of the stems of seedlings subjected to drought stress and subsequent re‐watering. Although drought stress eliminated root pressure, re‐watering partially restored it in a short period of time. The expression of PIP genes in the xylem was activated by drought stress, and some PIP genes were further stimulated in the top portion after re‐watering. The dynamics of root pressure and differential expression of PIP genes along the stem coincided with changes in PLC, suggesting that root pressure and PIPs work together to refill the embolized vessels. On the basis of the recovery dynamics in PLC and gsmax (maximum stomatal conductance) after re‐watering, the stomatal closure and xylem cavitation exhibited fatigue due to drought stress.

1. An air-injection method was used to study loss of water transport capacity caused by xylem cavitation in roots and branches of Pinus edulis (Colorado Pinyon) and Juniperus osteosperma (Utah Juniper). These two species characterize the Pinyon–Juniper communities of the high deserts of the western United States. Juniperus osteosperma can grow in drier sites than P. edulis and is considered the more drought tolerant.
2. Juniperus osteosperma was more resistant to xylem cavitation than P. edulis in both branches and roots. Within a species, branches were more resistant to cavitation than roots for P. edulis but no difference was seen between the two organs for J. osteosperma . There was also no difference between juveniles and adults in J. osteosperma ; this comparison was not made for P. edulis .
3. Tracheid diameter was positively correlated with xylem cavitation pressure across roots and stems of both species. This relation suggests a trade-off between xylem conductance and resistance to xylem cavitation in these species.
4. During summer drought, P. edulis maintained higher predawn xylem pressures and showed much greater stomatal restriction of transpiration, consistent with its greater vulnerability to cavitation, than J. osteosperma .
5. These results suggest that the relative drought tolerance of P. edulis and J. osteosperma results in part from difference in their vulnerability to xylem cavitation.

Species are often classified along a continuum from isohydric to anisohydric, with isohydric species exhibiting tighter regulation of leaf water potential through stomatal closure in response to drought. We investigated plasticity in stomatal regulation in an isohydric (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) and an anisohydric (Acacia aptaneura) angiosperm species subject to repeated drying cycles. We also assessed foliar abscisic acid (ABA) content dynamics, aboveground/belowground biomass allocation and nonstructural carbohydrates. The anisohydric species exhibited large plasticity in the turgor loss point (ΨTLP), with plants subject to repeated drying exhibiting lower ΨTLP and correspondingly larger stomatal conductance at low water potential, compared to plants not previously exposed to drought. The anisohydric species exhibited a switch from ABA to water potential‐driven stomatal closure during drought, a response previously only reported for anisohydric gymnosperms. The isohydric species showed little osmotic adjustment, with no evidence of switching to water potential‐driven stomatal closure, but did exhibit increased root:shoot ratios. There were no differences in carbohydrate depletion between species. We conclude that a large range in ΨTLP and biphasic ABA dynamics are indicative of anisohydric species, and these traits are associated with exposure to low minimum foliar water potential, dense sapwood and large resistance to xylem embolism.

Abstract

The annual time course of the water relations of six sclerophylls has been studied with the aim of: a) defining strategies adopted for withstanding summer water stress and b) to check whether their common sclerophyllous habitus could represent a case of convergent evolution devoted to a univocal functional role. In particular, Phillyrea latifolia L. showed to behave like a drought tolerant as indicated by deep summer drop in leaf water potential (Ψ1) to near the full turgor loss point (Ψlp) and in leaf relative water content (RWC) as caused by xylem cavitation. Prunus laurocerasus L. and Laurus nobilis L. showed to be drought avoiding water spenders in that their Ψ1 dropped in summer causing prompt recovery in RWC. This was made possible by low cavitation in their twigs. Ilex aquifolium L. was a typical drought avoiding water saver in that both Ψ1 and RWC remained at very high levels throughout the year. Quercus ilex L. behaved like a drought avoiding water spender which switched to drought tolerance in the warmest period of the year. This was explained by its high vulnerability to cavitation. The extreme heterogeneity of the six species studied suggested that sclerophylly cannot be interpreted as an anatomical feature leading to a specific and unifying functional role, at least as regards drought resistance.

Cavitation decreases the hydraulic conductance of the xylem and has, therefore, detrimental effects on plant water balance. However, cavitation is also hypothesized to relieve water stress temporarily by releasing water from embolizing conduits to the transpiration stream. Stomatal closure in response to decreasing water potentials in order to avoid excessive cavitation has been well documented in numerous previous studies. However, it has remained unclear whether the stomata sense cavitation events themselves or whether they act in response to a decrease in leaf water potential to a level at which cavitation is initiated. The effects of massive cavitation on leaf water potential, transpiration, and stomatal behaviour were studied by feeding a surfactant into the transpiration stream of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings. The stomatal response to cavitation in connection with the capacitive effect was also studied. A major transient increase in leaf water potential was found due to cavitation in the seedlings. As cavitation was induced by lowering the surface tension, the two mechanisms could be uncoupled, as the usual relation between xylem water potential and the onset of cavitation did not hold. Our results indicate that the seedlings responded more to leaf water potential and less to cavitation itself, as stomatal closure was insufficient to prevent the seedlings from being driven to 'run-away' cavitation in a manner of hours.

Abstract Water use, drought response and growth were examined under controlled conditions in four interbreeding willow species from different geographical origins (two clones of Salix viminalis L., one clone of S. viminalis × S. schwerenii E. Wolf and one clone of S. purpurea L.). The levels of soil water depletion that plants could sustain without wilting varied markedly between the clones. The level of drought resistance expressed this way was positively related to resistance to xylem cavitation, negatively related to the maximum stomatal conductance, and positively related to early stomatal closure. The rate of stomatal closure, however, was negatively related to the resistance to xylem cavitation. Prior to drought, there were no significant differences between leaf-specific hydraulic conductances of the clones when whole plants were considered. However, there were differences if the roots and shoots were considered separately. Drought resistance was negatively related to maximum growth yields. This is probably because resources were diverted away from leaf production to the production of denser wood (wood density was positively related to cavitation resistance), and, for one clone, to the growth of a larger root system. In addition, because the level of drought resistance was negatively related to the maximum stomatal conductance, growth may have been adversely affected as a result of reduced photosynthesis. Given its high water extraction ability, one of the clones started to wilt sooner than expected, although only lateral shoots were affected. This appeared to indicate a strategy of sacrificing expendable shoots.

Current understanding of physiological mechanisms governing stomatal behavior under water stress conditions is still incomplete and controversial. It has been proposed that coordination of stomatal kinetics with xylem vulnerability to cavitation [vulnerability curve (VC)] leads to different levels of isohydry/anisohydry in different plant species/cultivars. In this study, this hypothesis is tested in Vitis vinifera cultivars displaying contrasting stomatal behavior under drought stress. The cv Montepulciano (MP, near‐isohydric) and Sangiovese (SG, anisohydric) were compared in terms of stomatal response to leaf and stem water potential, as possibly correlated to different petiole hydraulic conductivity (kpetiole) and VC, as well as to leaf water relations parameters. MP leaves showed almost complete stomatal closure at higher leaf and stem water potentials than SG leaves. Moreover, MP petioles had higher maximum kpetiole and were more vulnerable to cavitation than SG. Water potential at the turgor loss point was higher in MP than in SG. In SG, the percentage reduction of stomatal conductance (PLgs) under water stress was almost linearly correlated with corresponding percentage loss of kpetiole (PLC), while in MP PLgs was less influenced by PLC. Our results suggest that V. vinifera near‐isohydric and anisohydric genotypes differ in terms of xylem vulnerability to cavitation as well as in terms of kpetiole, and that the coordination of these traits leads to their different stomatal responses under water stress conditions.
