Electrochemical gradients and energy coupling in photosynthetic bacteria

Abstract:The electrochemical proton gradient formed during light-induced electron transport in bacterial chromatophores is composed of both a proton concentration gradient and a membrane potential that can interchange under appropriate conditions. Both components, whether light-induced or imposed artificially in the dark, can drive ATP synthesis.
