Abstract: | Intestinal trefoil factor (ITF) is a member of trefoil peptide family and is expressed almost exclusively in the goblet cells of small intestine and colon. Its expression is up-regulated by inflammatory and ulcerative conditions in the intestinal mucosa, and ITF has a role to maintain the mucosal integrity and repair the damaged mucosa. On the other hand, human colorectal carcinoma cells also express ITF peptide. In this review, we discussed the current views on the biological functions of ITF in the intestinal mucosa, and its suppressive effect on the growth of colorectal carcinoma cells. |
