Monensin blocks the first meiotic cell division of the Xenopus oocyte: Effect at the nuclear membrane level

Abstract:The carboxylic ionophore monensin inhibits the meiotic maturation of the Xenopus oocyte. When oocytes are exposed to high concentrations of monensin (10 μM), both progesterone and MPF-induced (maturation-promoting factor-induced) maturations are blocked. Lower doses of monensin (1–10 μM) do not inhibit the formation or amplification of MPF activity in the oocyte cytoplasm; however, breakdown of the nuclear envelope does not occur. These observations show that monensin, which is known to abolish intracellular proton gradients, interferes with the mechanism of the breakdown of the nuclear envelope induced by MPF.
