Abstract:The crude syrups of Melampodium americanum L. and Melampodium leucanthum Torr. and Gray and their principal sesquiterpene lactones, melampodin A and melampodinin A, significantly inhibit growth and deter feeding of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith). Melampodin A and melampodinin A caused 2.3 × and 5.5 × greater S. frugiperda larval mortality, respectively, than glaucolide A, a sesquiterpene lactone with previously demonstrated insect allelochemic effects.
Keywords:Spodoptera frugiperda   fall armyworm   Lepidoptera   Melampodium   Compositae   allelochemics   sesquiterpene lactones
