There is no evidence for degenerative or constructive tendencies in the highly developed systems of neuromasts, in the nasal organs and in the labyrinths of the cavernicolous forms compared to the epigean ancestor Astyanax. There is an increase, however, in number and extension of taste buds. These differences are based on polygenic systems and are obviously caused by the loss of vision.
