Abstract:Formation of prostaglandins from 14C]arachidonic acid was investigated in aorta and platelets of spontaneously diabetic Wistar rats (BB rat) and compared to those of normoglycemic controls from the same colony. The formation of thromboxane B2 (stable product of thromboxane A2) was significantly higher in diabetic platelets. The formation of 6-keto-PGF (stable product of prostacyclin) was significantly reduced in aorta of diabetic animals. The increased formation of thromboxanes in platelets and decreased formation of prostacyclin in aorta of diabetic rats might lead to increased platelet deposition in aorta, thereby enhancing subsequent events concerned with atherogenesis.
