Abstract: | Methylglyoxal (MG) is a reactive aldehyde derived by glycolysis. In Arabidopsis, MG inhibited light-induced stomatal opening in a dose-dependent manner. It significantly inhibited both inward-rectifying potassium (K(in)) channels in guard-cell protoplasts and an Arabidopsis K(in) channel, KAT1, heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Thus it appears that MG inhibition of stomatal opening involves MG inhibition of K(+) influx into guard cells. |
