Abstract:Membrane vesicles prepared from E. coli B strain 29–78 require Na+ for the accumulation of glutamate. Respiratory-driven transport of glutamate but not lysine is sensitive to the ionophore monensin. An artificially-imposed sodium gradient and/or membrane potential drives glutamate uptake. These results suggest that glutamate is accumulated via a Na+/glutamate symport.
