Abstract: | The whole-blood oxygen equilibrium curve in sheep embryos at 17 days gestation was essentially hyperbolic, indicating non-cooperative O2 binding with Hill's coefficient, n approximately equal to 1.2. O2 affinity was higher in embryonic blood (P50 = 7.1 mmHg at pH = 7.4 and 39 degrees C) than in maternal blood (P50 = 32.6 mmHg at pH = 7.4 and 39 degrees C). The Bohr effect was apparently smaller in the embryo (delta log P50/delta pH = --0.52) than in maternal blood (--0.36). |
