Olfactory coding: random scents make sense

Abstract:Stimulating arbitrary collections of as few as 300 neurons in the primary olfactory cortex of mice suffices for associative learning independent of any odor stimulation. Thus, programmed spatial relationships may not exist in piriform cortex, making flexible random associations the rule.
