Abstract: | Soil amylase, cellulase, invertase and phosphatase activities were determined following wildfire in a savanna type grassland in southern India. Activities of these enzymes increased substanially in burned soils compared to those in adjacent unburned soils. Surface soil (0–10 cm) exhibited a greater increase in enzyme activities than subsurface soil (10–20 cm). Amylase activity was more pronounced following fire than the other enzyme activities. |
