A CONSPECTUS OF THE LICHENIZED ASCOMYCETES UMBILICARIACEAE IN CHINA

Henssen (1974) distinguished five apothecial types:biatorine, lecideine, lecanorine, zeorine, and superlecideoid. Both the biatorine and lecideine types belong to the lecideine type in a broad sense, and the superlecideoid, the lecanorine and zeorine to the lecanorine type in a broad sense. The apothecium structure of some species of Umbilicariaceae has been investigated by light microscopy (LM). According to the apothecium structure and the origin of the amphithecium, it is clear that the apothecium of Umbilicaria virginis and U. rigida with a thalline rim around the disc lacking algae in it belong to the lecanorine but not to the lecideine type in a broad sense. Inconsequence the term "superlecideoid" or "superlecideine" might better be replaced by "sublecanorine" for the apothecium type of the Umbilicariaceae. Fourty six taxa belonging to 37 species occur in China, including 1 species new to science (Umbilicaria pseudocinerascens). and 11 taxa, including 3 varieties, belonging to 11 species new to China are reported. A taxonomic revision of some taxa has also been made, and keys to species are provide.
