Abstract: | Summary Sorghum (Sorghum bicolar (L) Moench cv EA-955 Serena) seeds, subjected or not to hydration-dehydration treatment were planted in distilled water, NaCl, and Na2SO4. When seeds were not hydrated-dehydrated the salts inhibited both seed germination and seedling vigour, and caused an increase in the per cent of abnormal seedlings. The salts neither inhibited seed germination nor increased the per cent of abnormal seedlings if the seeds were treated by hydration-dehydration. However, this treatment was not effective in overcoming the inhibitory effect of either NaCl or Na2SO4 on seedling vigour. Application of these principles in growing plants under saline environment is discussed. |
