Abstract:Amino and carboxy terminal sequences of the DNA-binding protein HU from a cyanobacterium have been determined. The partial amino acid sequence of the cyanobacterial protein is compared to that of the corresponding protein from E. coli. A high degree of similarity in primary structure is detected. The results are interpreted in terms of the large evolutionary distance between E. coli and cyanobacteria to suggest that the protein HU is, like eukaryotic histones, highly conserved in primary structure.
