Abstract: | Aqueous extraction of the red alga Iridaea membranacea gave a high-sulfated polysaccharide. The structure of the polysaccharide has been investigated by hydrolysis, methanolysis, and fractionation. It resembles carrageenan in composition, but fractionation with KCl, and methylation analysis of two homogeneous fractions, showed that it is a complex mixture of sulfated d-galactans. |
