Abstract: | Six and a half years of data collected on the reproductive parameters of a population of free-rangingAteles geoffroyi show the following characteristics: seasonality of births; interbirth interval of ca. 32 months; nursing by infants for more
than 2 years; and reproductive life span of females continuing beyond 20 years of age. These characteristics appear to reflect
adaptations to a primary resource base, ripe fruit, that is very low in protein and patchily distributed in space and time
in tropical forests. |
