| Abstract: | A careful comparative analysis suggests a simple explanation for a category of exceptions to the general correlation between separate sexes in plants -- dioecy -- and self-incompatibility. In some genera, polyploidy causes failure of self-incompatibility, and dioecy may then evolve. |
