Abstract:Electron microscopic observations of duck embryo fibroblast ( DEF ) infected with the liver material from dead Japanese cranes ( Grus japonen-sis ) revealed a virus with many empty capsids and nucleocapsids forming crystal line structures in the nucleus. The nucleocapsids were releasing from the nucleus by budding to form intracellular or extracellular enveloped vi-rions. The empty capsids and nucleocapsids were in the shape of hexagon, 95-105nm in diameter, while the enveloped virions, sphere or ellipse, were 120-180nm in diameter. The virus could induce cytopathic effects in DEF.It is inferred from the above that the virus is a member of herpesvirus.
