Serum prostaglandin F2α concentration in the carcinoid syndrome

Using specific radioimmunoassay procedures we measured prostaglandin F₂α (PGF₂α) and 13, 14-dihydro-15-keto prostaglandin F₂α (PGF₂α metabolite) in 12 patients with carcinoid tumors. Although PGF₂α and PGF₂α metabolite were each modestly elevated in 17% of the patients the magnitude of the elevation did not correlate with the symptoms of the carcinoid syndrome. The 24 hour urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid excretion showed a good correlation with carcinoid symptoms while the serum serotonin concentration showed a fair correlation with carcinoid symptoms. We conclude that serum elevation of PGF₂α is not a frequent occurrence in patients with the carcinoid syndrome.
