Abstract: | The conditions and requirements of an in vitro protein-synthesizingsystem in the embryos of Pinus thunbergii seeds were studied.Even in the dry seed embryos, the ribosomes retained their syntheticcapacity. Even after imbibition in the dark, the ribosomes didnot show an increase in the activity of protein synthesis. Anincrease in the activity during dark imbibition was found inthe 100,000?g supernatant fraction. The activities of the cell-freesystems prepared from both embryos of dark-imbibed and dry seedswere dependent on the addition of poly U. This suggests thelack or inactivity of messenger RNA in these seed embryos.
