Advances in our taxonomic, ecological and geographical knowledge of the lichen flora of the British Isles over the past three centuries are assessed. The growth of literature and the development of field recording are critically surveyed, complemented by numerical and cartographical analyses. The evolution of a comprehensive programme of network recording is described and evaluated. The present and future use of technological advances, particularly in respect of computer databases, is examined.
