Abstract:Rat tail surface lipids were separated on thin-layer chromatography plates into seven neutral lipid fractions. Each fraction was tested as a penetration stimulus in the presence of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae on a tanned animal membrane which, untreated, did not attract or stimulate the parasites. The most polar fraction (A) was most stimulatory, the next fraction (B) was moderately stimulatory, and the remaining five fractions (CG) were only slightly or nonstimulatory. Fraction A, about 2% of the total, was believed to be a fatty acid polyol ester and fraction B, approximately 2% of the total, was free fatty acid. The remaining five fractions (CG) contained cholesterol, sterol esters and fatty acid esters less polar than those of fraction A.
