Abstract:Apical dominance appears to have minimal direct involvementin daughter bulb formation in the bulbous Iris cultivar Ideal.Daughter bulb number and growth relate to the size and reproductivestate of the mother bulb and are not markedly influenced bymeristem destruction. In contrast, destruction or removal ofthe apical meristem promotes lateral bud sprouting in intactbulbs, and lateral bud elongation in Iris meristem explants. These results show that, in contrast to certain other bulbousplants, apical dominance does not direcdy limit daughter bulbnumber in bulbous Iris, but does prevent lateral bud sprouting.
