Protoplast formation during spore germination inStreptomyces

Germ tubes from spores ofStreptomyces were very sensitive to lysozyme attack. A good yield of stable protoplasts was obtained 30 min after addition of the enzyme, making the growth of the microorganism in a high-glycine-content medium unnecessary. Physiologically unaltered, stable protoplasts, which are formed from cells in the same stage of their developmental cycle, may be obtained in the presence of lysozyme. After protoplast release, abundant membranous structures were observed inside the empty walls.
