Behavioral responses of male lobsters to Ecdysones

Four ecdysones with molting hormone activity, β‐ecdysone, inokosterone, ponasterone A, and cyasterone were tested for their capacity to elicit behavioral responses, especially sexual responses in the male lobster (Homarus americanus). Of these ecdysones, only β‐ecdysone elicited a low key alerting response. However, no particular type of behavior, such as feeding, aggressive or sexual behavior could be observed. A role of β‐ecdysone as a crustacean sex pheromone is not supported by these experiments and the general validity of this notion is discussed.
